Recent findings that spinal manual therapy (SMT) produces concurrent hypoalgesic and sympathoexcitatory effects have led to the proposal that SMT may exert its initial effects by activating descending inhibitory pathways from the dorsal periaqueductal gray area of the midbrain (dPAG). In addition to hypoalgesic and sympathoexcitatory effects, stimulation of the dPAG in animals has been shown to hal e a facilitatory effect on motor activity. This study sought to further investigate the proposal regarding SMT and the FAG by including a test of motor function in addition to the variables previously investigated, Using a condition randomised, placebo-controlled, double blind, repeated measures design, 30 subjects with mid to lon er cervical spine pain of insidious onset participated in the study. The results indicated that the cervical mobilisation technique produced a hypoalgesic effect as revealed by increased pressure pain thresholds on the side of treatment (P = 0.0001) and decreased resting visual analogue scale scores (P = 0.049). The treatment technique also produced a sympathoexcitatory effect with an increase in skin conductance (P < 0.002) and a decrease in skin temperature (P = < 0.02). There was a decrease in superficial neck flexor muscle activity (P < 0.0002) at the lower levels of a staged cranio-cervical flexion test. This could imply facilitation of the deep neck flexor muscles with a decreased need for co-activation of the superficial neck flexors, The combination of all findings,would support the proposal that SMT may, at least initially, exert part of its influence via activation of the PAG, (C) 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.

El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar la política óptima (considerando producción, transporte y regulación) para la integración de la industria de gas natural en el Mercosur. Se analizarán factores que promueven o limitan la integración en la región. Utilizando un modelo matemático de flujo de redes, se minimizará el costo total (producción y transporte) para la región en su conjunto, satisfaciendo las restricciones de producción, capacidad de transporte y equilibrio (oferta igual a demanda) en cada nodo. El costo total (CT) de la producción y transporte de gas natural (considerando nodos para cada país en la región) es la función objetivo. El proceso de optimización consiste en identificar el nivel de gas natural producido y transportado que minimiza el costo total del sistema para la región. El modelo es estático, no considerando una optimización dinámica con relación a las reservas remanentes. Restricciones Consideramos cuatro restricciones en operación, a saber: 1. Equilibrio en los nodos: esta ecuación establece el equilibrio entre la oferta y la demanda de gas natural en cada nodo. La oferta incluye la producción local y las importaciones. Por su parte, la demanda incluye el consumo doméstico más las exportaciones. 2. Capacidad de producción en cada cuenca: esta restricción establece que las cantidades producidas en cada cuenca debería ser menor o igual a su capacidad de producción. Ello también permite la existencia de una utilización no plena de la capacidad. La capacidad máxima de producción en cada cuenca está determinada sobre la base de una medida de política para cada país a través de la cual el horizonte de consumo de las reservas probadas está establecido. Dada esta relación, el límite sobre la producción de cada año está fijado. En otras palabras, el nivel de producción no está basado ni en la capacidad instalada de producción ni en los precios, sino en la política de agotamiento decidida sobre las reservas probadas en el año de calibración del modelo. Esto permite diferentes escenarios para el análisis. Para las simulaciones se tomó el ratio de reservas a producción en el año de calibración del modelo. 3. Capacidad de transporte: el gas transportado a través de un gasoducto (los operativos y aquellos que están en plan de construcción), en general, y el gas transportado desde cada cuenca a cada mercado, en particular, debería ser menor o igual a la capacidad del gasoducto. 4. Nivel no negativo de gas natural producido: esto evita la existencia de soluciones inconsistentes no sólo desde un punto de vista económico sino también técnico. Cross-reactivity of plant foods is an important phenomenon in allergy, with geographical variations with respect to the number and prevalence of the allergens involved in this process, whose complexity requires detailed studies. We have addressed the role of thaumatin-like proteins (TLPs) in cross-reactivity between fruit and pollen allergies. A representative panel of 16 purified TLPs was printed onto an allergen microarray. The proteins selected belonged to the sources most frequently associated with peach allergy in representative regions of Spain. Sera from two groups of well characterized patients, one with allergy to Rosaceae fruit (FAG) and another against pollens but tolerant to food-plant allergens (PAG), were obtained from seven geographical areas with different environmental pollen profiles. Cross-reactivity between members of this family was demonstrated by inhibition assays. Only 6 out of 16 purified TLPs showed noticeable allergenic activity in the studied populations. Pru p 2.0201, the peach TLP (41%), chestnut TLP (24%) and plane pollen TLP (22%) proved to be allergens of probable relevance to fruit allergy, being mainly associated with pollen sensitization, and strongly linked to specific geographical areas such as Barcelona, Bilbao, the Canary Islands and Madrid. The patients exhibited >50% positive response to Pru p 2.0201 and to chestnut TLP in these specific areas. Therefore, their recognition patterns were associated with the geographical area, suggesting a role for pollen in the sensitization of these allergens. Finally, the co-sensitizations of patients considering pairs of TLP allergens were analyzed by using the co-sensitization graph associated with an allergen microarray immunoassay. Our data indicate that TLPs are significant allergens in plant food allergy and should be considered when diagnosing and treating pollen-food allergy.

We have reported in a variety of mammalian cells the reversible formation of a filamentous actin (F-actin)-enriched aggresome generated by the actin toxin jasplakinolide (Lázaro-Diéguez et al., J Cell Sci 2008; 121:1415-25). Notably, this F-actin aggresome (FAG) resembles in many aspects the pathological Hirano body, which frequently appears in some diseases such as Alzheimer's and alcoholism. Using selective inhibitors, we examined the molecular and subcellular mechanisms that participate in the clearance of the FAG. Chaperones, microtubules, proteasomes and autophagosomes all actively participate to eliminate the FAG. Here we compile and compare these results and discuss the involvement of each process. Because of its simplicity and high reproducibility, our cellular model could help to test pharmacological agents designed to interfere with the mechanisms involved in the clearance of intracellular bodies and, in particular, of those enriched in F-actin.

La poblaci??n infantil espa??ola con problemas de sobrepeso se ha triplicado en los ??ltimos 15 a??os, debido a causas como los cambios nutricionales o el sedentarismo. Una alimentaci??n saludable es uno de los pilares del buen estado general y del rendimiento escolar. Ser?? la que proporcione los nutrientes necesarios para un adecuado crecimiento y desarrollo y posibilite la necesaria actividad f??sica. La escuela, durante la etapa obligatoria, tiene la responsabilidad de conseguir que el alumnado adquiera la informaci??n, la formaci??n y los valores necesarios para vivir una vida saludable, pero este trabajo no puede ser exclusivo de ella, sino que es preciso que reciba un apoyo por parte de las familias. Es primordial que padres y madres alimenten a los menores de forma equilibrada, variada y suficiente. Esta gu??a, adaptaci??n de la publicada por los Ministerios de Educaci??n, Pol??tica Social y Deporte y de Sanidad y Consumo, como herramienta para el desarrollo del Programa Perseo, intenta ofrecer ayuda a las familias en torno a la alimentaci??n saludable de sus hijos para que exista una correlaci??n entre lo aprendido en el centro educativo y la vida cotidiana.

A criação de poder compensatório decorrente da ação concertada daqueles prejudicados em uma relação de poder assimétrica pode gerar aumento de bem-estar social. O desenvolvimento analítico a partir da estrutura proposta por Dobson et al. (1998) permite constatar que as condições para que sejam verificados os efeitos positivos são restritivas e estão diretamente relacionadas ao reconhecimento da interdependência e à cooperação entre os agentes envolvidos. Foi possível observar também que, diferentemente do que previu a análise de Dobson et al. (1998), a criação de poder compensatório pode ter efeitos positivos em termos de bem-estar, ainda que as partes não reconheçam sua interdependência e não cooperem entre si – o que depende da relação das elasticidades-preço da demanda e da oferta. A despeito da possibilidade de efeitos benéficos, as doutrinas de defesa da concorrência brasileira e nas demais jurisdições, como EUA e Comunidade Européia, aplicam de maneira equivocada o conceito de poder compensatório ou ignoram por completo sua existência. Há que se considerar, contudo, que o objetivo da política antitruste e o da criação de poder compensatório estão alinhados: equilíbrio de assimetrias de poder nas relações entre os agentes, coibindo o exercício abusivo do poder de uma das partes na transação. Verifica-se, portanto, uma incongruência entre a jurisprudência e a teoria econômica. O conflito na aplicação do conceito de poder compensatório pela doutrina antitruste pode ser nitidamente observado no mercado de saúde suplementar brasileiro. Um fenômeno verificado nesse setor é a coordenação de médicos em cooperativas para fazer frente ao exercício de poder de compra por parte das operadoras de planos de saúde. Essa ação concertada tem sido condenada pelas autoridades de defesa da concorrência com base na interpretação de que a coordenação entre médicos constitui formação de cartel, passível de condenação pelas autoridades antitruste. A análise empírica corrobora as proposições teóricas: no setor de saúde suplementar, pelo menos na dimensão preço, existe a possibilidade de efeitos positivos associados ao poder compensatório. Destaca-se, contudo, que esse resultado estaria associado às cooperativas condenadas pelo CADE, que devem representar o grupo de associações que efetivamente deteriam poder econômico para equilibrar a assimetria de poder na negociação com as operadoras de planos de saúde. Diante dessa constatação, é importante reavaliar as decisões do CADE acerca das cooperativas médicas enquanto política pública que visa aumentar o bem-estar social.

Innumerable studies have focused been reported on the sleep spindles (SS), Sharp Vertex Waves (SVW) and REM, NREM Sleep as indicators interpreting EEG patterns in children. However, Frequency and Amplitud Gradient (FAG) is rarely cited sleep parameter in children,that occurs during NREM Sleep. It was first described by Slater and Torres, in 1979, but has not been routinely evaluated in EEG reports. The aim of this study was to assess the absence of SS, SVW and FAG, as an indication of neurological compromise in children. The sample consisted of 1014 EEGs of children referred to the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory, Hospital Universitário de Brasília (HUB), from January 1997 to March 2003, with ages ranging from 3 months to 12 years old, obtained in spontaneous sleep or induced by choral hydrate. The study was transversal and analytical, in which, visual analysis of EEG traces was perfumed individually and independently by two electroencephalographers without prior knowledge of the EEG study or neurological findings. After EEG selection, the investigators analyzed the medical reports in order to define and correlate neurological pattern was classified according to the presence or absence of neurological compromise, as Normal Neurological Pattern (NNP), and Altered Neurological Pattern (ANP) respectively. From the visual analysis of the EEG(s), it was possible to characterize 6 parameters: 1- FAG present (64,1%); 2- FAG absent (35,9%); 3 - normal SS (87,9%); 4 - altered SS s (12,1%); 5 - normal SVW s (95,7%); 6 - altered SVW s (4,3%). The prevalence of well-formed FAG is found in the 3 months to 5 years age group in the children with NNF. FAG was totally absent from the age of 10 years. When comparing the three sleep graphielements, it was observed that SVW and SS were predominant in children with NNF. However, FAG absent was more prevalent in the ANF than in altered SS an SVW. The statistical analysis showed that there is a strong association of FAG absent, with isolated alteration, in ANF patients, in that the prevalence ratio was 6,60. The association becomes stronger when FAG absent + altered SS(s) is considered (RP= 6,68). Chi-square test, corrected by Yates technique, showed a highly significant relation for FAG ρ= 0,00000001, for error X of 5%, or else the 95% confidence interval (ρ<0,05). Thus, the FAG absent were more expressive in ANF patient than altered SS(s) and SVW(s). The association becomes stronger in order to establish a prognostic relation, when the FAG is combined with the SS. The results os this study allow us to affirm that the FAG, when absent at ages ranging from 3 months to 5 years , is an indication of neurological compromise. FAG is an age-dependent EEG parameter and incorporated systematically, in the interpretation criteria of the EEG of children s sleep, not only in the maturational point of view, but also neurological disturbances with encephalic compromise

The influence of a population of the understorey woody bamboo Merostachys riedeliana and different flooding regimes on tree community dynamics in a section of tropical semideciduous forest in South-Eastern Brazil was examined. A forest section with an area of 1.6 ha composed of 71 adjacent plots was located on a slope ending at the river margin. The section was divided into five topographical sectors according to the mean duration of river floods. In 1991 and 1998 all trees with a diameter at the base of the trunk greater than or equal to 5 cm were measured, identified and tagged, and all live bamboo culms were counted. Annualised estimates of the rates of tree mortality and recruitment, gain and loss of tree basal area, and change in bamboo density were calculated for each of the 71 plots and five topographical sectors as well as for diameter classes and tree species. To segregate patterns arising from spatially autocorrelated events, geostatistical analyses were used prior to statistical comparisons and correlations. In general, mortality rates were not compensated by recruitment rates but there was a net increase in basal area in all sectors, suggesting that the tree community as a whole was in a building phase. Tree community dynamics of the point bar forest (Depression and Levee sectors) differed from that of the upland forest (Ridgetop, Middle Slope and Lower Slope sectors) in the extremely high rates of gain in basal area. The predominant and specialised species, Inga vera and Salix humboldtiana, are probably favoured by relaxed competition in an environment stressed by long-lasting floods. In the upland forest, mortality rates were highest at the Middle Slope, particularly for smaller trees, while recruitment rates were lowest. As bamboo clumps were concentrated in this sector, the locally higher instability in the tree community probably resulted from the direct interference of bamboos. The density of bamboo culms in the upland forest was negatively correlated with the rates of tree recruitment and gain in basal area, and positively correlated with tree mortality rates. Bamboos therefore seemed to restrict the recruitment, growth and survival of trees.
