The Neolithic was marked by a transition from small and relatively egalitarian groups to much larger groups with increased stratification. But, the dynamics of this remain poorly understood. It is hard to see how despotism can arise without coercion, yet coercion could not easily have occurred in an egalitarian setting. Using a quantitative model of evolution in a patch-structured population, we demonstrate that the interaction between demographic and ecological factors can overcome this conundrum. We model the coevolution of individual preferences for hierarchy alongside the degree of despotism of leaders, and the dispersal preferences of followers. We show that voluntary leadership without coercion can evolve in small groups, when leaders help to solve coordination problems related to resource production. An example is coordinating construction of an irrigation system. Our model predicts that the transition to larger despotic groups will then occur when: (i) surplus resources lead to demographic expansion of groups, removing the viability of an acephalous niche in the same area and so locking individuals into hierarchy; (ii) high dispersal costs limit followers' ability to escape a despot. Empirical evidence suggests that these conditions were probably met, for the first time, during the subsistence intensification of the Neolithic.

Model trees are a particular case of decision trees employed to solve regression problems. They have the advantage of presenting an interpretable output, helping the end-user to get more confidence in the prediction and providing the basis for the end-user to have new insight about the data, confirming or rejecting hypotheses previously formed. Moreover, model trees present an acceptable level of predictive performance in comparison to most techniques used for solving regression problems. Since generating the optimal model tree is an NP-Complete problem, traditional model tree induction algorithms make use of a greedy top-down divide-and-conquer strategy, which may not converge to the global optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm based on the use of the evolutionary algorithms paradigm as an alternate heuristic to generate model trees in order to improve the convergence to globally near-optimal solutions. We call our new approach evolutionary model tree induction (E-Motion). We test its predictive performance using public UCI data sets, and we compare the results to traditional greedy regression/model trees induction algorithms, as well as to other evolutionary approaches. Results show that our method presents a good trade-off between predictive performance and model comprehensibility, which may be crucial in many machine learning applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. An evolutionary model of human behavior should privilege emotions: essential, phylogenetically ancient behaviors that learning and decision making only subserve. Infants and non-mammals lack advanced cognitive powers but still survive. Decision making is only a means to emotional ends, which organize and prioritize behavior. The emotion of pride/shame, or dominance striving, bridges the social and biological sciences via internalization of cultural norms.

Many species are able to learn to associate behaviours with rewards as this gives fitness advantages in changing environments. Social interactions between population members may, however, require more cognitive abilities than simple trial-and-error learning, in particular the capacity to make accurate hypotheses about the material payoff consequences of alternative action combinations. It is unclear in this context whether natural selection necessarily favours individuals to use information about payoffs associated with nontried actions (hypothetical payoffs), as opposed to simple reinforcement of realized payoff. Here, we develop an evolutionary model in which individuals are genetically determined to use either trial-and-error learning or learning based on hypothetical reinforcements, and ask what is the evolutionarily stable learning rule under pairwise symmetric two-action stochastic repeated games played over the individual's lifetime. We analyse through stochastic approximation theory and simulations the learning dynamics on the behavioural timescale, and derive conditions where trial-and-error learning outcompetes hypothetical reinforcement learning on the evolutionary timescale. This occurs in particular under repeated cooperative interactions with the same partner. By contrast, we find that hypothetical reinforcement learners tend to be favoured under random interactions, but stable polymorphisms can also obtain where trial-and-error learners are maintained at a low frequency. We conclude that specific game structures can select for trial-and-error learning even in the absence of costs of cognition, which illustrates that cost-free increased cognition can be counterselected under social interactions.

Les séquences protéiques naturelles sont le résultat net de l’interaction entre les mécanismes de mutation, de sélection naturelle et de dérive stochastique au cours des temps évolutifs. Les modèles probabilistes d’évolution moléculaire qui tiennent compte de ces différents facteurs ont été substantiellement améliorés au cours des dernières années. En particulier, ont été proposés des modèles incorporant explicitement la structure des protéines et les interdépendances entre sites, ainsi que les outils statistiques pour évaluer la performance de ces modèles. Toutefois, en dépit des avancées significatives dans cette direction, seules des représentations très simplifiées de la structure protéique ont été utilisées jusqu’à présent. Dans ce contexte, le sujet général de cette thèse est la modélisation de la structure tridimensionnelle des protéines, en tenant compte des limitations pratiques imposées par l’utilisation de méthodes phylogénétiques très gourmandes en temps de calcul. Dans un premier temps, une méthode statistique générale est présentée, visant à optimiser les paramètres d’un potentiel statistique (qui est une pseudo-énergie mesurant la compatibilité séquence-structure). La forme fonctionnelle du potentiel est par la suite raffinée, en augmentant le niveau de détails dans la description structurale sans alourdir les coûts computationnels. Plusieurs éléments structuraux sont explorés : interactions entre pairs de résidus, accessibilité au solvant, conformation de la chaîne principale et flexibilité. Les potentiels sont ensuite inclus dans un modèle d’évolution et leur performance est évaluée en termes d’ajustement statistique à des données réelles, et contrastée avec des modèles d’évolution standards. Finalement, le nouveau modèle structurellement contraint ainsi obtenu est utilisé pour mieux comprendre les relations entre niveau d’expression des gènes et sélection et conservation de leur séquence protéique.

O objetivo deste trabalho é o desenvolvimento de frameworks de testes automáticos de software. Este tipo de testes normalmente está associado ao modelo evolucionário e às metodologias ágeis de desenvolvimento de software, enquanto que os testes manuais estão relacionados com o modelo em cascata e as metodologias tradicionais. Como tal foi efetuado um estudo comparativo sobre os tipos de metodologias e de testes existentes, para decidir quais os que melhor se adequavam ao projeto e dar resposta à questão "Será que realmente compensa realizar testes (automáticos)?". Finalizado o estudo foram desenvolvidas duas frameworks, a primeira para a implementação de testes funcionais e unitários sem dependências a ser utilizada pelos estagiários curriculares da LabOrders, e a segunda para a implementação de testes unitários com dependências externas de base de dados e serviços, a ser utilizada pelos funcionários da empresa. Nas últimas duas décadas as metodologias ágeis de desenvolvimento de software não pararam de evoluir, no entanto as ferramentas de automação não conseguiram acompanhar este progresso. Muitas áreas não são abrangidas pelos testes e por isso alguns têm de ser feitos manualmente. Posto isto foram criadas várias funcionalidades inovadoras para aumentar a cobertura dos testes e tornar as frameworks o mais intuitivas possível, nomeadamente: 1. Download automático de ficheiros através do Internet Explorer 9 (e versões mais recentes). 2. Análise do conteúdo de ficheiros .pdf (através dos testes). 3. Obtenção de elementos web e respetivos atributos através de código jQuery utilizando a API WebDriver com PHP bindings. 4. Exibição de mensagens de erro personalizadas quando não é possível encontrar um determinado elemento. As frameworks implementadas estão também preparadas para a criação de outros testes (de carga, integração, regressão) que possam vir a ser necessários no futuro. Foram testadas em contexto de trabalho pelos colaboradores e clientes da empresa onde foi realizado o projeto de mestrado e os resultados permitiram concluir que a adoção de uma metodologia de desenvolvimento de software com testes automáticos pode aumentar a produtividade, reduzir as falhas e potenciar o cumprimento de orçamentos e prazos dos projetos das organizações.
