Ryanodane diterpenes from two Erythroxylum species

Ryanodane diterpenes, named 14-O-methyl-ryanodanol and ryanodanol, were isolated from ripe fruit of Erythroxylum passerinum. Compound 2 was also found in the leaves of this species, while 1 was obtained from the leaves of E. nummularia. Compound 1 showed insecticidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae. ACE inhibition by astilbin isolated from Erythroxylum gonocladum (Mart.) OE Schulz

Erythroxylum species have several traditional uses in different countries, including the treatment of hypertension. The ethanol extract from E. gonocladum aerial parts, a species endemic to the Brazilian cerrado, elicited a concentration-dependent inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) (pIC(50)=4.53 +/- 0.05). Extract fractionation led to the isolation of two compounds, whose structures were assigned by spectrometric data as astilbin and beta-sitosterol, along with a mixture of palmitic, stearic and linolenic acids. This is the first report on the occurrence of these compounds on E. gonocladum. Astilbin promoted significant ACE inhibition in vitro (pIC(50)=5.86 +/- 0.33) and its activity did not differ from captopril, when both compounds were assayed at 10 mu M concentration. Germinação e armazenamento de sementes de COCA (Erythroxylum ligustrinum DC. - Erythroxylaceae)

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da temperatura sobre a germinação e o armazenamento de sementes de Erythroxylum ligustrinum DC. As sementes foram colocadas germinar caixas de plásticas sobre duas folhas de papel, umedecidas com Nistatina 0, 2%, mantidas em germinadores nas temperaturas constantes de 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 e 45ºC e com fotoperíodo de 12 horas. Para o armazenamento, as sementes foram colocadas em sacos de papel, mantidos à temperatura ambiente e em geladeira. em seguida, mensalmente, foi avaliada a germinação das sementes. A temperatura mínima, a faixa de temperatura ideal e a temperatura máxima para germinação de sementes de coca estão entre 10 e 15ºC, 25 e 30ºC e 40 e 45ºC, respectivamente. O armazenamento de sementes coca por longo período é inviável em embalagens de papel na geladeira (10ºC ± 2) e em temperatura ambiente (27ºC ± 5).

Stem protective tissue in Erythroxylum tortuosum (Erythroxylaceae), a fire tolerant species from cerrado

The origin and structure are described of the secondary protective tissue in the stem of Erythorxylum tortuosum Mart., a fire tolerant shrubby species common in Brazilian cerrado. The highly tortuous stems are covered with thick bark which is more developed at the base of the stem. After fire in the cerrado, rhytidome fragments of the burned stem flake off, revealing newly formed cork. The first periderm appears near of the terminal buds and is iniated by periclinal divisions in subepidermal cells giving rise to radial rows of cells. The first phellogen is discernible only after the differentiation of the several radial rows of cork cells. Other phellogens have their origin in successively deeper layers of the cortex. The sucessive periderms are discontinuous around the circumference. The collapsed cells with phenolic substances and the accumulated dead cells cause the formation of discontinuous blackish lines, which delimit the sucessive periderms in the rhytidome. The rhytidome contains large quantities of sclereids developed from cell wall thickening of cortex cells. The occurrence of periderm, in the young parts of the stem and of rhytidome in the older parts represents pyrophytic characteristics and may explain, in part, the fire tolerance of this species.

Erythroxylaceae, erythroxylum subsessile (Mart.) O.E. schulz in Espírito Santo: Distribution extension

Erythroxylaceae have tropical and subtropical distribution with four genera and about 250 species. Erythroxylum is the biggest genus of the family with approximately 100 species cited for Brazil. Erythroxylum subsessile (Mart.) O.E. Schulz is a species cited just for Rio de Janeiro state and now first recorded for the state of Espírito Santo, increasing its area of distribution. © 2012 Check List and Authors.

A new tropane alkaloid and other constituents of Erythroxylum rimosum (Erythroxylaceae)

A new tropane alkaloid, named the 7β-acetoxy-3β,6β- dibenzoyloxytropane (1), was isolated from a methanol extract of Erythroxylum rimosum O.E. Schulz leaves. Other known compounds were detected, including quercetin, kaempferol-3-O-α-l-arabinofuranoside, (+)-catechin, epicatechin, quercetin-3-O-α-arabinofuranoside, quercetin-3-O-α- arabinopyranoside, quercetin-3-O-β-arabinopyranoside, quercetin-3-β- glucopyranoside, kaempferol, quercetin-3-O-β-galactopyranoside, β-sitosterol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, and the ester derivatives of these two amyrins. Compound 1 exhibited weak inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. Structural identification was performed using IR, ESIHRMS and one- and two-dimensional NMR data analyses and confirmed by comparison with literature data. © 2013 Phytochemical Society of Europe.
