The one-step preparation of highly anisotropic polymer semiconductor thin films directly from solution is demonstrated. The conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as well as P3HT:fullerene bulk-heterojunction blends can be spin-coated from a mixture of the crystallizable solvent 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (TCB) and a second carrier solvent such as chlorobenzene. Solidification is initiated by growth of macroscopic TCB spherulites followed by epitaxial crystallization of P3HT on TCB crystals. Subsequent sublimation of TCB leaves behind a replica of the original TCB spherulites. Thus, highly ordered thin films are obtained, which feature square-centimeter-sized domains that are composed of one spherulite-like structure each. A combination of optical microscopy and polarized photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals radial alignment of the polymer backbone in case of P3HT, whereas P3HT:fullerene blends display a tangential orientation with respect to the center of spherulite-like structures. Moreover, grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering reveals an increased relative degree of crystallinity and predominantly flat-on conformation of P3HT crystallites in the blend. The use of other processing methods such as dip-coating is also feasible and offers uniaxial orientation of the macromolecule. Finally, the applicability of this method to a variety of other semi-crystalline conjugated polymer systems is established. Those include other poly(3-alkylthiophene)s, two polyfluorenes, the low band-gap polymer PCPDTBT, a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) small molecule as well as a number of polymer:fullerene and polymer:polymer blends. Macroscopic spherulite-like structures of the conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) grow directly during spin-coating. This is achieved by processing P3HT or P3HT:fullerene bulk heterojunction blends from a mixture of the crystallizable solvent 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene and a second carrier solvent such as chlorobenzene. Epitaxial growth of the polymer on solidified solvent crystals gives rise to circular-symmetric, spherulite-like structures that feature a high degree of anisotropy.

Epitaxial crystallization of syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) on 2-quinoxalinol (2-Quin) yields, in the lower part of the crystallization range, the less common and metastable form II based on the packing of isochiral helices, rather than the stable antichiral form I. The contact plane is (110)(II). Form II exits only as a thin layer (< 50 nm) near the substrate surface. During further growth away from the surface, a transition takes place to the disordered form I, observed in "conventional" thin film growth. The epitaxial relationship rests only partly on dimensional matching with the chain axis repeat distance (which would be valid for both forms I and II) and on interchain distances. Whereas a better dimensional match would be achieved with form I, selection of the isochiral form II results from better correspondence of the surface topographies of the deposit (110)(II) sPP and substrate 2-Quin (001) contact faces.

Crystallization behavior of syndiotactic polypropylene(sPP) on the (100) lattice plane of high-density polyethylene(HDPE) crystals was studied by means of transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results indicate that sPP crystals can grow epitaxially on the (100) PE lattice plane with their chain directions +/-37 degrees apart from the chain direction of the HDPE substrate. The contact planes are (100) lattice planes for both polymers. This kind of epitaxy is explained in terms of parallel alignment of HDPE chains along the rows formed by the {CH3, CH2,CH3} groups in the (100) lattice plane of the sPP crystals. This implies that in the epitaxial crystallization of sPP with fiber oriented HDPE substrate, not only the (110) but also the (100) HDPE lattice planes can act as the oriented nucleation sites. Furthermore, according to the poor matching between HDPE chains in the (100) lattice plane and the {CH3, CH2, CH3} group rows in the (100) lattice plane of the sPP crystals, it is concluded that the geometric matching is not the only controlling factor for the occurrence of polymer epitaxy.

The effects of lamellar thickness on the epitaxial crystallization of polyethylene on the oriented isotatic polypropylene have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained from the bright field electron microscopy and electron diffraction show that the epitaxial orientation of the PE crystals on the iPP substrate depends not only on the thickness of the oriented iPP lamellae, but also on the lamellar thickness of PE crystals. No epitaxial orientation relationship between PE crystal and iPP substrate can be found, when the PE crystals are thicker than the lamellar thickness of iPP along the matching direction. This suggests, that the epitaxial nucleation of PE in the PE/iPP epitaxial system is controlled not only by the chain-row matching, but also by a secondary nucleation process.

The epitaxial crystallization behaviour of syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) on highly oriented nylon-12 substrates has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained from bright field electron microscopy and electron diffraction indicate that sPP crystals grow epitaxially on the oriented nylon-12 substrate with their c-axes +/- 37 degrees apart from the chain axis of the nylon-12 substrate. The contact planes of the sPP crystals are the (100) lattice planes. Moreover, the epitaxial crystallization of nylon-12 on highly oriented sPP substrates from a dilute solution in cyclohexanone has also been studied using optical microscopy. The results show that the nylon-12 crystals grow epitaxially on the oriented sPP substrate with the oriented nylon-12 lamellae forming large, anisotropic domains. Epitaxial crystallization of trans-1,4-polybutadiene (PBD) on highly oriented isotactic poly(propylene) (iPP) has been investigated at different crystallization temperatures and rates. From electron microscopy and electron diffraction, it is confirmed that epitactic growth of the low-temperature modification (monoclinic) with microcrystals of PBD on the iPP films takes place with their chain directions about +/- 50-degrees apart. No epitaxial relationship occurs between the high-temperature modification (hexagonal) of PBD and the iPP substrate. Thermal analyses of PBD-PP layered films indicate that the epitaxy has an important effect on the formation of the high-temperature modification of PBD.

The epitaxial crystallization of syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) on uniaxially oriented polyethylene (PE) has been investigated by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. It is found that the sPP lamellae grow epitaxially on the PE substrate film with the preference in sPP for the b axis as the fast growth direction. Instead of 50-degrees as in the system of isotactic polypropylene with PE, the molecular chains of the sPP crystals are approximately +/- 37-degrees inclined to the chain direction of PE.

Unique crystalline morphologies of solution-cast films of HDPE/iPP blends were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction, metal shadowing and specimen-tilt techniques. The unique morphologies come from an epitaxial crystallization of HDPE on iPP. The contact planes of the two kinds of crystals are (100) of HDPE and (010) of iPP, while the intercrossing angle between their chain axes is about 50-degrees. The HDPE existed with different crystalline morphologies in the two kinds of crystalline regions of iPP spherulites, i.e. cross-hatched and single-crystal-type structures. Based on structural analysis, two models of epitaxial growth of HDPE on iPP are proposed.

Epitaxial crystallization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in solution-cast films has been investigated by electron microscopy. The specimen-tilt technique of electron microscopy has been used to study the structural relationship between HDPE and iPP crystals. HDPE exhibits different crystalline morphologies in the two basic types of iPP spherulite textures, cross-hatched and lathlike regions. In the former, the crystallographic c axis of HDPE lamellae is in the film plane, while in the latter, the c axis of HDPE crystallites is at an angle of about 50-degrees with the normal of the film. In both structural regions of iPP, however, the contact planes of epitaxial growth are (0 1 0) for iPP and (1 0 0) for HDPE.

The homoepitaxial crystallization in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline chloro-ply(aryl ether ketone) is studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The homoepitaxy takes place in the temperature range 330-320 degreesC, in which a highly-ordered smectic crystalline phase of the copolymer with a single-crystal-like banded structure is formed during the cooling process from the isotropic melt. The homoepitaxial crystallizations with angles of 32 degrees and 122 degrees between the two b axes are the major populations observed, and possess epitaxial contact planes of (100)(I)-(210)(II) and (010)(I)-(210)(II); respectively.

The crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) at elevated temperatures (e.g., from 125 to 128 degrees C), was studied using transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results show that epitaxial crystallization of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs only in a thin layer which is in direct contact with the iPP substrate, when the HDPE is crystallized from the melt on the oriented iPP substrates at 125 degrees C. The critical layer thickness of the epitaxially crystallized HDPE is not more than 30 nm when the HDPE is isothermally crystallized on the oriented iPP substrates at 125 degrees C. When the crystallization temperature is above 125 degrees C, the HDPE crystallizes in the form of crystalline aggregates and a few individual crystalline lamellae. But both the crystalline aggregates and the individual crystalline lamellae have no epitaxial orientation relationship with the iPP substrate. This means that there exists a critical crystallization temperature for the occurrence of epitaxial crystallization of HDPE on the melt-drawn oriented iPP substrates (i.e., 125 degrees C). The epitaxial crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene on the boundary of highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates has been investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from AFM and TEM indicate that the epitaxial nucleation of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs earlier than that in the pure HDPE phase, i.e., homogeneous nucleation. Therefore the epitaxially grown HDPE lamellae can grow across the boundary of the iPP substrate into the HDPE spherulitic phase with the epitaxial orientation relationship remaining.

In order to study the oriented (epitaxial) crystallization of thermoplastic polymers on oriented polymer substrates, generally the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used. With this instrument, the crystallized material can easily be resolved and orientation relationships can be monitored by electron diffraction. Disadvantages are the time consuming sample preparations and difficulties in the in-situ observations of the crystallization events, because of the radiation sensitivity of the polymer crystals. It is demonstrated that these disadvantages of the TEM can be eleminated by the use of different methods of light optical contrasts under specific preparation conditions of the samples and that the optical microscopy being a supplementary method to the TEM for investigations of epitaxial crystallization.

The controlling factors for the epitaxial crystallization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates have been studied in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results obtained in this work indicate that the crystallization process must be considered in the investigation of epitaxial growth of polymers on polymeric substrates, because of the unique morphological and crystallization characteristics of polymers. Crystallization rate has an important effect on the epitaxial crystallization of polymers. Higher rates result in the formation of thicker epitaxial layers. Isothermal crystallization temperature is another factor affecting epitaxial growth of polymers. Lower temperatures are favorable to epitaxial crystallization of polymers. There exists a critical epitaxial temperature at given experimental conditions, above which no epitaxial growth occurs at all. The influence of crystal dimensions of both the substrates and the deposited polymers on epitaxial growth confirms that secondary nucleation is an important controlling factor for the occurrence of epitaxial crystallization in polymers. The requirement satisfying the secondary nucleation criterion is that the substrate crystal dimension in the matching direction must be greater than the crystal thickness of the deposited polymer. Once the requirement of the secondary nucleation is satisfied, subsequent epitaxial growth is based on the lamellar growth habit of the deposited polymer itself. Epitaxial crystallization behavior of HDPE/iPP double layers under quenching and annealing conditions has been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from bright field TEM observations indicate that in the as-quenched state the HDPE that is in direct contact with the surface of the oriented iPP substrate recrystallizes in the form of oriented crystallites dispersed on the iPP substrate. The electron diffraction results show that besides the two normally observed epitaxial orientations between HDPE and iPP, there is also a special orientation with [001](HDPE)parallel to[001](iPP). The HDPE which is in contact with the clean surface of a glass slide crystallizes in small lamellae with random orientation. In the boundary region, the epitaxially crystallized HDPE small lamellae stop right on the boundary of the oriented iPP film. If the quenched samples are annealed at 128 degrees C (below T-m of HDPE) for 2 h, the small HDPE crystals grow to thick lamellae in both areas. But only the epitaxial orientation of HDPE with [001](HDPE)parallel to[101](iPP) has been observed.
