The potential for nonlinear optical processes in nematic-liquid-crystal cells is great due to the large phase changes resulting from reorientation of the nematic-liquid-crystal director. Here the combination of diffraction and self-diffraction effects are studied simultaneously by the use of a pair of focused laser beams which are coincident on a homeotropically aligned liquid-crystal cell. The result is a complicated diffraction pattern in the far field. This is analyzed in terms of the continuum theory for liquid crystals, using a one-elastic-constant approximation to solve the reorientation profile. Very good comparison between theory and experiment is obtained. An interesting transient grating, existing due to the viscosity of the liquid-crystal material, is observed in theory and practice for large cell-tilt angles.

We report observations of the diffraction pattern resulting when a nematic liquid crystal is illuminated with two equal power, high intensity beams of light from an Ar+ laser. The time evolution of the pattern is followed from the initial production of higher diffraction orders to a final striking display arising as a result of the self-diffraction of the two incident beams. The experimental results are described with good approximation by a model assuming a phase distribution at the output plane of the liquid crystal in the form of the sum of a gaussian and a sinusoid.

We report the remarkable diffraction effects produced from circular patterned arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Highly ordered circular arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (with inter-nanotube spacings of 633 nm) display optical dispersion effects similar to compact discs. These arrays display remarkable diffraction patterns in the far field which are spatially continuous. High quality diffraction patterns were obtained experimentally which are in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculations. The achieved continuous diffraction patterns pave the way towards the utilization of engineered carbon nanotube arrays in applications like three dimensional holograms.

A fundamental study of visible diffraction effects from patterned graphene layers is presented. By patterning graphene into optical gratings, visible diffraction from graphene is experimentally measured as a function of the number of layers and visible wavelengths. A practical application of these effects is also presented, by demonstrating an optical hologram based on graphene. A high resolution (pixel size 400 nm) intensity hologram is fabricated which, in response to incident laser light, generates a visible image. These findings suggest that visible diffraction in graphene can find practical application in holograms and should also be considered during the design and characterisation of graphene-based optical applications. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The effects of pre-TMIn flow prior to QW growth and TMIn flow rates during QW growth on the interface and optical properties of InGaN/GaN MQWs were investigated. Pre-depositing indium prior to QW growth and an appropriate TMIn flow rate can improve the interface abruptness and increase the EL intensity. InGaN/GaN MQWs with improved interface abruptness have increasing emission intensity and wavelength. We attribute the interface improvement and the increase of EL intensity to the improvement of the indium compositional profiles. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report an experimental technique for the comparison of ionization processes in ultrafast laser pulses irrespective of pulse ellipticity. Multiple ionization of xenon by 50 fs 790 nm, linearly and circularly polarized laser pulses is observed over the intensity range 10 TW/cm(2) to 10 PW/cm(2) using effective intensity matching (EIM), which is coupled with intensity selective scanning (ISS) to recover the geometry-independent probability of ionization. Such measurements, made possible by quantifying diffraction effects in the laser focus, are compared directly to theoretical predictions of multiphoton, tunnel and field ionization, and a remarkable agreement demonstrated. EIM-ISS allows the straightforward quantification of the probability of recollision ionization in a linearly polarized laser pulse. Furthermore, the probability of ionization is discussed in terms of the Keldysh adiabaticity parameter gamma, and the influence of the precursor ionic states present in recollision ionization is observed.

Lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) thin films with stoichiometry (9/65/35) were prepared by a dip-coating process using a polymeric organic solution. The solution viscosity was adjusted in the range of 15-56 cP. Silicon (100) substrates were previously cleaned and then immersed in the solution. The withdrawal speed of substrate from the solution was adjusted within a range of 5 to 20 mm/min. The coated substrates were thermally treated in the 450-700 degreesC temperature range. Surface roughness and crystallization of these films are strongly dependent on the annealing conditions. Infrared and X-ray diffraction data for PLZT powders heat-treated at 650 degreesC for 3 h show that the material is free of carbonate phases and crystalline. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Ti-6Al-4V samples have been treated by PHI processing at different temperatures (400-800°C), treatment time (30-150 min) and plasma potential (100 and 420 V). Hardness measurements results showed an enhancement of the hardness for all implanted samples. XRD results detected the Ti 2N phase and the best corrosion resistance was found for the samples processed at higher temperature and lower PIII time.

This work describes the use of a large aperture PVDF receiver in the measurement of density of liquids and elastic constants of composite materials. The density measurement of several liquids is obtained with the accuracy of less than 0.2% using a conventional NDT emitter transducer and a 70-mm diameter, 52-μm P(VDF-TrFE) membrane with gold electrodes. The determination of the elastic constants of composite materials is based in the measurement of phase velocity. It is shown that the diffraction can lead to errors around 1% in the velocity measurement when using a pair of ultrasonic transducers (1MHz and 19mm diameter) operating in transmission-reception mode separated by a distance of 100 mm. This effect is negligible when using a pair of 10-MHz transducers. On the other hand, the dispersion at 10 MHz can result in errors of about 0.5%, measuring the velocity in composite materials. The use of an 80-mm diameter, 52-μm thick PVDF membrane receiver allows measuring the phase velocity without the diffraction effects.

Although titanium and its alloys own good mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance, these materials present poor tribological properties for specific applications that require wear resistance. In order to produce wear-resistant surfaces, this work is aimed at achieving improvement of wear characteristics in Ti-Si-B alloys by means of high temperature nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). These alloys were produced by powder metallurgy using high energy ball milling and hot pressing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction identified the presence of α-titanium, Ti6Si2B, Ti5Si3, TiB and Ti3Si phases. Wear tests were carried out with a ball-on-disk tribometer to evaluate the friction coefficient and wear rate in treated and untreated samples. The worn profiles were measured by visible light microscopy and examined by SEM in order to determine the wear rates and wear mechanisms. Ti-7.5Si-22.5B alloy presented the highest wear resistance amongst the untreated alloys produced in this work. High temperature PIII was effective to reduce the wear rate and friction coefficient of all the Ti-Si-B sintered alloys. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

We describe a technique for interactive rendering of diffraction effects produced by biological nanostructures such as snake skin surface gratings. Our approach uses imagery from atomic force microscopy that accurately captures the nanostructures responsible for structural coloration, that is, coloration due to wave interference, in a variety of animals. We develop a rendering technique that constructs bidirectional reflection distribution functions (BRDFs) directly from the measured data and leverages precomputation to achieve interactive performance. We demonstrate results of our approach using various shapes of the surface grating nanostructures. Finally, we evaluate the accuracy of our precomputation-based technique and compare to a reference BRDF construction technique.
