The aim of this article is to present the results of an action research project, which has been put into practice in Primary Education. This project was intended to develop students’ textual competence, considering both comprehension and textual production. Our starting hypothesis was that teaching the schematisation of text types, focusing on linguistic devices that underlie text production, would promote the development of textual competence, leading to the production of more coherent and cohesive texts. In order to test this hypothesis we implemented the project in three phases. First, before the intervention, we collected texts produced by the students. Secondly, we implemented a didactic program designed to develop students’ textual competence. Lastly, after the intervention, we collected students’ texts once again. Data was analyzed according to categories that confer cohesion and coherence to different types of texts. Narrative, descriptive, and explanatory texts were assessed in terms of 1) building an autonomous text; 2) hierarchisation of information, and 3) textual organisation. Overall, results indicate that students developed their text conceptualisations, their understanding of the different structures of texts, and produced better writing. Indeed, their written work shows a marked progression from the beginning of the intervention program to the end of the program.

This investigation focused on how people cope with the demands of their environment in a competent manner. It sought to assess the effects of learning competent coping behaviors on self-reported well-being. The study chose a community-evolved, organized effort on the part of a group of neighborhoods to build competence in the Mexican-American community of East Los Angeles. This network was a citizen-action organization called the United Neighborhoods Organization. UNO was selected because it concentrated on developing community leaders by using spiritual beliefs and family values as shared community resources. Neighborhood leaders were encouraged to engage in risk-taking and confrontation maneuvers. They were also taught problem-solving skills and provided with social support.^ A survey instrument was developed to assess sociodemographic characteristics, acculturation history and status, willingness to engage in risk-taking and confrontation and self-perceived general well-being. The study relied on eight months of daily participant-observation of the organization, the East Los Angeles environment and the interaction between the two. At the end of the observation period, a sample of 150 UNO participants were given the survey questionnaire as was a matched group of 150 non-UNO participants who were ELA residents.^ The study sample was mostly women, in their middle age years who had lived in the area from 5 to more than 30 years. Significantly more single persons were found in the UNO group. The sample was almost equally divided into English and Spanish speaking respondents. Acculturatively almost all the sample fell in the Very Mexican and Mostly Mexican types. The survey found a trend of association between participating in UNO and reporting feeling well. A statistically significant association was found among UNO participants between taking risks and reporting feeling well, regardless of a tendency for all the sample to minimize risk. A trend was seen for married UNO participants to report feeling well. Slightly more UNO participants were willing to engage in confrontation and a substantial proportion of the participants who were confronters reported feeling well in comparison to their counterparts. Ethnic pride was positively associated with participation in UNO and showed a trend in the expected direction with reported self-perceived well-being. ^

The results obtained after incorporating the competence “creativity” to the subject Technical Drawing of the first course of the Degree in Forestry, Technical University of Madrid, are presented in this study. At first, learning activities which could serve two functions at the same time -developing students’ creativity and developing other specific competences of the subject- were considered. Besides, changes in the assessment procedure were made and a method which analyzes two aspects of the assessment of the competence creativity was established. On the one hand, the products are evaluated by analyzing the outcomes obtained by students in the essays suggested and by establishing a parameter to assess the creativity expressed in those essays. On the other, an assessment of the student is directly carried out through a psychometric test which has been previously chosen by the team. Moreover, these results can be applied to similar or could be of general application

BACKGROUND: The detection of psychosocial distress is a significant communication problem in Southern Europe and other countries. Work in this area is hampered by a lack of data. Because not much is known about training aimed at improving the recognition of psychosocial disorders in cancer patients, we developed a basic course model for medical oncology professionals. METHODS: A specific educational and experiential model (12 hours divided into 2 modules) involving formal teaching (ie, journal articles, large-group presentations), practice in small groups (ie, small-group exercises and role playing), and discussion in large groups was developed with the aim of improving the ability of oncologists to detect emotional disturbances in cancer patients (ie, depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders). RESULTS: A total of 30 oncologists from 3 Southern European countries (Italy, Portugal, and Spain) participated in the workshop. The training course was well accepted by most participants who expressed general satisfaction and a positive subjective perception of the utility of the course for clinical practice. Of the total participants, 28 physicians (93.3%) thought that had they been exposed to this material sooner, they would have incorporated the techniques received in the workshop into their practices; 2 participants stated they would likely have done so. Half of the doctors (n = 15) believed that their clinical communication techniques were improved by participating in the workshop, and the remaining half thought that their abilities to communicate with cancer patients had improved. CONCLUSIONS: This model is a feasible approach for oncologists and is easily applicable to various oncology settings. Further studies will demonstrate the effectiveness of this method for improving oncologists skills in recognizing emotional disorders in their patients with cancer.

This dissertation aimed to investigate the development of motor competence in childhood and adolescence. As a starting point, a systematic review was conducted to investigate the instruments used for the evaluation of motor competence. This review identified a gap in the literature regarding the existence of an instrument to assess motor competence based on the three theoretical constructs (stability, locomotor, manipulative). In an attempt to fill this gap, a valid quantitative instrument was proposed. To meet this purpose, 584 children, between 6 and 14 years of age, were evaluated in nine motor tasks, three for each construct. The final instrument comprised two motor tasks for each construct (stability, locomotor, manipulative) and presented very good fit indexes. This instrument was used to analyse the motor competence behaviour by gender in different age groups, indicating that generally boys outperformed girls and both genders increased their performance across age groups. However, different motor competence growth rates appear in both genders across age groups. In addition, children with high and low motor competence were compared regarding some of their health related fitness variables. We found that, regardless of age and gender, the group with better motor proficiency always showed better results in health related fitness. We found positive moderate to high correlations between motor competence and the variables of cardiovascular fitness and muscular fitness, and an inverse correlation with body composition across the four age groups. We also found that motor competence explained 75% of the variance of the health related fitness for the total sample, with locomotion as the primary predictor. However, when analysing the four age groups, stability skills seem to play an important role in health related fitness in the transition from childhood to adolescence. In conclusion, educational and health policies should consider the development of motor competence as an essential strategy to promote healthy development throughout life.

Sea biscuits and sand dollars diverged from other irregular echinoids approximately 55 million years ago and rapidly dispersed to oceans worldwide. A series of morphological changes were associated with the occupation of sand beds such as flattening of the body, shortening of primary spines, multiplication of podia, and retention of the lantern of Aristotle into adulthood. To investigate the developmental basis of such morphological changes we documented the ontogeny of Clypeaster subdepressus. We obtained gametes from adult specimens by KCl injection and raised the embryos at 26 degrees C. Ciliated blastulae hatched 7.5 h after sperm entry. During gastrulation the archenteron elongated continuously while ectodermal red-pigmented cells migrated synchronously to the apical plate. Pluteus larvae began to feed in 3 d and were similar to 20 d old at metamorphosis; starved larvae died 17 d after fertilization. Postlarval juveniles had neither mouth nor anus nor plates on the aboral side, except for the remnants of larval spicules, but their bilateral symmetry became evident after the resorption of larval tissues. Ossicles of the lantern were present and organized in 5 groups. Each group had 1 tooth, 2 demipyramids, and 2 epiphyses with a rotula in between. Early appendages consisted of 15 spines, 15 podia (2 types), and 5 sphaeridia. Podial types were distributed in accordance to Loven's rule and the first podium of each ambulacrum was not encircled by the skeleton. Seven days after metamorphosis juveniles began to feed by rasping sand grains with the lantern. Juveniles survived in laboratory cultures for similar to 9 months and died with <500 mu m wide, a single open sphaeridium per ambulacrum, aboral anus, and no differentiated food grooves or petaloids. Tracking the morphogenesis of early juveniles is a necessary step to elucidate the developmental mechanisms of echinoid growth and important groundwork to clarify homologies between irregular urchins.

Interpretation of the anatomical structure of the ovary and fruit of the Orchidaceae family is still controversial, which makes it difficult to understand the development and dehiscence of the fruit. The genus Oncidium is polyphyletic and is currently the subject of taxonomic studies. In this study, we have investigated the anatomical development of the pericarp and seed of Oncidium flexuosum Sims to determine important diagnostic characters that, along with molecular data, can assist in defining this group. We have found a new anatomical characteristic of the family: the presence of precursor cells for fruit dehiscence, which were visible from the beginning of development and located on the outer walls of the sterile valves. In contrast with what has been observed by different authors with other species, in the mature fruit of O. flexuosum, only the endocarp of the fertile valves and a few cells near the exocarp and the vascular bundle in the sterile valves show parietal thickening, while the rest remains parenchymatous. During the development of the ovule and embryo, we have shown that the embryonic sac of this species has eight nuclei and that the embryo has a long and elaborate suspensor. (C) 2011 Elsevier GmbH. Proteinase inhibitors (PI) are present in plant tissues, especially in seeds, and act as a defense mechanism against herbivores and pathogens. Serine PI from soybean such as Bowman-Birk (BBPI) and Kunitz have been used to enhance resistance of sugarcane varieties to the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), the major pest of this crop. The use of these genetically-modified plants (GM) expressing PI requires knowledge of its sustainability and environmental safety, determining the stability of the introduced characteristic and its effects on non-target organisms. The objective of this study was to evaluate direct effects of ingestion of semi-purified and purified soybean PI and GM sugarcane plants on the soil-dwelling mite Scheloribates praeincisus (Berlese) (Acari: Oribatida). This mite is abundant in agricultural soils and participates in the process of organic matter decomposition; for this reason it will be exposed to PI by feeding on GM plant debris. Eggs of S. praeincisus were isolated and after larvae emerged, immatures were fed milled sugarcane leaves added to semi-purified or purified PI (Kunitz and BBPI) or immatures were fed GM sugarcane varieties expressing Kunitz and BBPI type PI or the untransformed near isogenic parental line variety as a control. Developmental time (larva-adult) and survival of S. praeincisus was evaluated. Neither Kunitz nor BBPI affected S. praeincisus survival. On the other hand, ingestion of semi-purified and purified Kunitz inhibitor diminished duration of S. praeincisus immature stages. Ingestion of GM senescent leaves did not have an effect on S. praeincisus immature developmental time and survival, compared to ingestion of leaves from the isogenic parental plants. These results indicate that cultivation of these transgenic sugarcane plants is safe for the non-target species S. praeincisus.

Evaluation of students undertaking fieldwork education placements is a critical process in the health professions. As training programs and practice evolve, systems for assessing students need to be reviewed and updated constantly. In 1995, staff of the occupational therapy training program at the University of Queensland, Australia decided to develop a new tool for assessing student fieldwork performance. Using an action research methodology, a team developed the Student Placement Evaluation Form, a flexible and comprehensive criterion-referenced evaluation tool. The present paper examines action research as an appropriate methodology for considering real-life organisational problems in a systematic and participatory manner. The action research cycles undertaken, including preliminary information gathering, tool development, trial stages and current use of the tool, are detailed in the report. Current and future development of the tool is also described.

Purpose, An integrated ionic mobility-pore model for epidermal iontophoresis is developed from theoretical considerations using both the free volume and pore restriction forms of the model for a range of solute radii (r(j)) approaching the pore radii (r(p)) as well as approximation of the pore restriction form for r(j)/r(p) < 0.4. In this model, we defined the determinants for iontophoresis as solute size (defined by MV, MW or radius), solute mobility, solute shape, solute charge, the Debye layer thickness, total current applied, solute concentration, fraction ionized, presence of extraneous ions (defined by solvent conductivity), epidermal permselectivity, partitioning rates to account for interaction of unionized and ionized lipophilic solutes with the wall of the pore and electroosmosis. Methods, The ionic mobility-pore model was developed from theoretical considerations to include each of the determinants of iontophoretic transport. The model was then used to reexamine iontophoretic flux conductivity and iontophoretic flux-fraction ionized literature data on the determinants of iontophoretic flux. Results. The ionic mobility-pore model was found to be consistent with existing experimental data and determinants defining iontophoretic transport. However, the predicted effects of solute size on iontophoresis are more consistent with the pore-restriction than free volume form of the model. A reanalysis of iontophoretic flux-conductivity data confirmed the model's prediction that, in the absence of significant electroosmosis, the reciprocal of flux is linearly related to either donor or receptor solution conductivity. Significant interaction with the pore walls, as described by the model, accounted for the reported pH dependence of the iontophoretic transport for a range of ionizable solutes. Conclusions. The ionic mobility-pore iontophoretic model developed enables a range of determinants of iontophoresis to be described in a single unifying equation which recognises a range of determinants of iontophoretic flux.

There are, at least, two major questions concerning the molecular development of the olfactory nerve pathway. First, what are the molecular cues responsible for guiding axons from the nasal cavity to the olfactory bulb? Second, what is the molecular basis of axon targeting to specific glomeruli once axons reach the olfactory bulb? Studies in the primary olfactory pathway have focused on the role of the extracellular matrix and ensheathing cells in establishing an initial substrate for growth of pioneer axons between the periphery and brain. The primary axons also express a multitude of cell adhesion molecules that regulate fasciculation of axons and hence may play a role in fascicle formation in the olfactory nerve. Although the olfactory neuroepithelium principally consists of a morphologically homogeneous class of primary olfactory neurons, there are numerous subpopulations of olfactory neurons expressing chemically distinct phenotypes. In particular, numerous subpopulations have been characterized by expression of unique carbohydrate residues and olfactory receptor proteins. Some of these molecules have recently been implicated in axon guidance and targeting to specific glomeruli.

The olfactory neuroepithelium is a highly plastic region of the nervous system that undergoes continual turnover of primary olfactory neurons throughout life. The mechanisms responsible for persistent growth and guidance of primary olfactory axons along the olfactory nerve are unknown. In the present study, we used antibodies against the Eph-related receptor, EphA5, to localise EphA5, and recombinant EDhA5-IgG fusion protein to localise its ligands. We found that although both EphA5 and its ligands were both expressed by primary olfactory neurons within the embryonic olfactory nerve pathway, there was no graded or complementary expression pattern. In contrast, the expression patterns altered postnatally such that primary olfactory neurons expressed the ligands, whereas the second-order olfactory neurons, the mitral cells, expressed EphA5. The role of EphA5 was analysed by blocking EphA5-ligand interactions in explant cultures of olfactory neuroepithelium using anti-EphA5 antibodies and recombinant EphA5. These perturbations reduced neurite outgrowth from explant cultures and suggest that intrafascicular axon repulsion may serve to limit adhesion and optimise conditions for axon growth. Background: The Perceived Need for Care Questionnaire (PNCQ) was designed for the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing. The PNCQ complemented collection of data on diagnosis and disability with the survey participants' perceptions of their needs for mental health care and the meeting of those needs. The four-stage design of the PNCQ mimics a conversational exploration of the topic of perceived needs. Five categories of perceived need are each assigned to one of four levels of perceived need (no need, unmet need, partially met need and met need). For unmet need and partially met need, information on barriers to care is collected, Methods: Inter-rater reliabilities of perceived needs assessed by the PNCQ were examined in a study of 145 anxiety clinic attenders. Construct validity of these items was tested, using a multi-trait multi-method approach and hypotheses regarding extreme groups, in a study with a sample of 51 general practice and community psychiatric service patients. Results: The instrument is brief to administer and has proved feasible for use in various settings. Inter-rater reliabilities for major categories, measured by the kappa statistic, exceeded 0.60 in most cases; for the summary category of all perceived needs, inter-rater reliability was 0.62. The multi-trait multi-method approach lent support to the construct validity of the instrument, as did findings in extreme groups. Conclusions: The PNCQ shows acceptable feasibility, reliability and validity, adding to the range of assessment tools available for epidemiological and health services research.

The longest open reading frame of PKHD1 (polycystic kidney and hepatic disease 1), the autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) gene, encodes a single-pass, integral membrane protein named polyductin or fibrocystin. A fusion protein comprising its intracellular C-terminus, FP2, was previously used to raise a polyclonal antiserum shown to detect polyductin in several human tissues, including liver. In the current study, we aimed to investigate by immunohistochemistry the detailed polyductin localization pattern in normal (ductal plate [DP], remodelling ductal plate [RDP], remodelled bile ducts) and abnormal development of the primitive intrahepatic biliary system, known as ductal plate malformation (DPM). This work also included the characterization of polyductin expression profile in various histological forms of neonatal and infantile cholestasis, and in cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We detected polyductin expression in the intrahepatic biliary system during the DP and the RDP stages as well as in DPM. No specific staining was found at the stage of remodelled bile ducts. Polyductin was also detected in liver biopsies with neonatal cholestasis, including mainly biliary atresia and neonatal hepatitis with ductular reaction as well as congenital hepatic fibrosis. In addition, polyductin was present in CCC, whereas it was absent in HCC. Polyductin was also co-localized in some DP cells together with oval stem cell markers. These results represent the first systematic study of polyductin expression in human pathologies associated with abnormal development of intrahepatic biliary tree, and support the following conclusions: (i) polyductin expression mirrors developmental properties of the primitive intrahepatic biliary system; (ii) polyductin is re-expressed in pathological conditions associated with DPM and (iii) polyductin might be a potential marker to distinguish CCC from HCC.
