We have investigated the impact of the functionalization and the chemical nature of counterions on the p-dimer dications formation in two end-capped heptathienoacenes. Radical cations of an a-substituted heptathienoacene with triisopropylsilyl groups do not p-dimerize, while those of an a,b-substituted heptathienoacene with four n-decyl side chains show a high propensity toward p-dimerization, increased by PF6 ÿ counterions.

The synthesis of [R2Sn(H2O)2(OPPh3)2](O3SCF3)2 (R = Me (1), Bu (2)) by the consecutive reaction of R2SnO (R = Me, Bu) with triflic acid and Ph3PO is described. Compounds 1 and 2 feature dialkyltin(IV) dications [R2Sn(H2O)2(OPPh3)2]2+ apparently stabilized by the neutral ligands in the solid state. Compounds 1 and 2 readily dehydrate upon heating at 105 and 86 °C, respectively. The preparative dehydration of 1 afforded [Me2Sn(OPPh3)2(O3SCF3)](O3SCF3) (1a), which features both bidentate and non-coordinating triflate anions. In compounds 1 and 2 the ligands Ph3PO and H2O are kinetically labile in solution and undergo reversible ligand exchange reactions. Compounds 1, 1a and 2 were characterized by multinuclear solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectrometry, conductivity measurements, thermogravimetry and X-ray crystallography.

In the structure of the title compound, C2H10N22+·C8H2Cl2O42-, the dications and dianions form hydrogen-bonded ribbon substructures which enclose conjoint cyclic R21(7), R12(7) and R42(8) associations and extend down the c-axis direction. These ribbons inter-associate down b, giving a two-dimensional sheet structure. In the dianions, one of the carboxylate groups is essentially coplanar with the benzene ring, while the other is normal to it [C-C-C-O torsion angles = 177.67 (12) and 81.94 (17)°, respectively].

We report the quadratic nonlinearity of one- and two-electron oxidation products of the first series of transition metal complexes of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP). Among many MTPP complexes, only CuTPP and ZnTPP show reversible oxidation/reduction cycles as seen from cyclic voltammetry experiments. While centrosymmetric neutral metalloporphyrins have zero first hyperpolarizability, β, as expected, the cation radicals and dications of CuTPP and ZnTPP have very high β values. The one- and two-electron oxidation of the MTPPs leads to symmetry-breaking of the metal−porphyrin core, resulting in a large β value that is perhaps aided in part by contributions from the two-photon resonance enhancement. The calculated static first hyperpolarizabilities, β0, which are evaluated in the framework of density functional theory by a coupled perturbed Hartree−Fock method, support the experimental trend. The switching of optical nonlinearity has been achieved between the neutral and the one-electron oxidation products but not between the one- and the two-electron oxidation products since dications that are electrochemically reversible are unstable due to the formation of stable isoporphyrins in the presence of nucleophiles such as halides.

We have studied the excitation and dissociation processes of the molecule W(CO)(6) in collisions with low kinetic energy (3 keV) protons, monocharged fluorine, and chlorine ions using double charge transfer spectroscopy. By analyzing the kinetic energy loss of the projectile anions, we measured the excitation energy distribution of the produced transient dications W(CO)(6)(2+). By coincidence measurements between the anions and the stable or fragments of W(CO)(6)(2+), we determined the energy distribution for each dissociation channel. Based on the experimental data, the emission of the first CO was tentatively attributed to a nonstatistical direct dissociation process and the emission of the second or more CO ligands was attributed to the statistical dissociation processes. The dissociation energies for the successive breaking of the W-CO bond were estimated using a cascade model. The ratio between charge separation and evaporation (by the loss of CO+ and CO, respectively) channels was estimated to be 6% in the case of Cl+ impact. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Layered organic-inorganic composite materials (C5H10N3)PbX4 (X = Br 1, Cl 2) containing histaminium dications were grown via a solution-cooling process, and their structure and optical properties were determined. The organic ligand-histaminium introduced into the corner-sharing octahedra of the 'PbX4- layer' contains both primary ammonium and imidazolium different from the traditionally primary amine found in this system. As comparison, another analogous amine of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazol was used as ligand to coordinate with PbBr2 in acid solution. A novel complex (C2H2N4)PbBr3 (3) was obtained with zigzag PbBr2 chains different from the PbX4 layer in compound as 1 and 2. The hybrid (C5H10N3)PbX4 show exciton absorption at 339 nm for X = Cl and 419 nm for X = Br with the corresponding emission at 360 and 436 nm, respectively. The different PbBr2 chain structure of compound 3 does not show photo luminescence.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the plasma generated from methyl acrylate under self-chemical ionization conditions were studied by use of a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C3H3O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major product ions. The former adduct ion is formed by electrophilic reaction of C-60 with the ion [CH2=CHCO](+), a main fragment ion resulting from the methyl acrylate molecular ion [CH2=CHCOOCH3](+) through alpha cleavage. The latter ion is generated by proton transfer from protonated methyl acrylate to C-60. Semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations have been performed for the eight possible isomers of [C60C3H3O](+) at the Hartree-Fock level by use of the AMI method. The results show three types of cycloadducts as the most stable structures among the possible isomers.

The characterization of free base porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(hexyl-thio) tetraazaporphyrin (H(2)OHTTAP) and its zinc(II) complexes [Zn(II)OHTTAP] containing eight thioether groups at the beta -pyrrole positions of the macrocycle was reported. Results obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry indicated a five-electron reduction in five steps for each complex. They were oxidized in two single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -cation radicals and dications and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -anion radicals, dianions and trianions, respectively. The redox property of H(2)OHTTAP was unusual as compared to porphyrins (PPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). Each process was monitored by in situ thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, which indicated that only the Ligand was electroactive. The existence of the eight hexylthio groups was responsible for the intrastack interactions and enhanced intracolumnar and intercolumnar electron motions, resulting in improved conductivity. The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O=CH2](+) and the 1-hydroxyethyl ion [CH3CH=OH](+) generated under the self-chemical-ionization (self-CI) conditions of alkyl methyl ethers and primary alcohols were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct ions [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecules [C60H](+) were observed as the major products of C-60 with the plasma of alkyl methyl ethers. On the contrary, the reactions of C-60 With the plasmas of primary alcohols produced few corresponding adduct ions. The AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations were carried out on 14 possible structures. The calculated results showed that the most stable structure among the possible isomers of [C60C2H5O](+) is the [3+2] cycloadduct. According to experimental and theoretical results, the pathway for the formation of the adduct was presented.

By electrocrystallization of 2,6-[4,5-bis(n-butylsulfanyl)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene]-4,8-bis(6-iodo-n-hexyloxy)-1,3,5,7-tetrathia-s-indacene (BHBDTI) and [NBu4](4)[SiMo12O40] in the mixed solvent CHCl2CH2Cl and CH3CN, the new radical-ion salt [C42H60Cl2O2S12](2)[SiMo12O40] was prepared. It was characterized by means of IR and ESR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. In the crystal structure, organic radical dications and silicomolybdate anions are alternatively arranged along the a axis to form a 1-D conducting layer. The organic layer consists of two isolated groups of BHBDTI divided by the (011) plane without short interatomic contacts. However, in each group, BHBDTI molecules associate with each other in a head to tail manner running along the [011] direction and face-to-face overlapping with a relative shift by approximately one TTF subunit along the long axis of the molecule and a slight shift along the short axis of the molecule with significantly short S ... S contacts. The room-temperature d.c. conductivity determined by the two-probe method is 10(-4) S cm(-1), suggesting that the compound is a semiconductor.

This paper is concerned with the chemical evolution of large molecules in interstellar clouds. We consider the chemistry and ionisation balance of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) type molecules in diffuse clouds and show that certain PAH molecules can be doubly ionised by the interstellar ultraviolet radiation field. If recombination of the dications so produced with electrons is dissociative rather than radiative, then PAHs are rapidly destroyed. PAHs which can only be singly ionised have much smaller recombination energies and can be long lasting in these regions. This type of property may be very important in selecting the PAH species which can populate the general interstellar medium and account for certain of the diffuse bands observed in optical spectra. Destruction of PAH molecules via formation of dications may be responsible for the weakening of the diffuse bands observed in regions of high UV flux.

The complex [Ru(C&3bond; CC&3bond; N)(dppe)Cp*] (1) is readily obtained (ca. 70%) from the sequential reaction of [Ru(C=CH2)(dppe)Cp*]PF6 with (BuLi)-Bu-n and phenyl cyanate. The complex behaves as a typical transition metal acetylide upon reaction with tetracyanoethene, affording a metallated pentacyanobutadiene. Complex I is a useful metalloligand, and its reactions with [W(thf)(CO)5], [RuCl(PPh3)(2)Cp], [RuCl(dppe)Cp*] or cis-[RuCl2(dppe)(2)] all afforded products featuring the M-C&3bond; CC&3bond; N-M' motif, for which ground state structures indicate a degree of polarisation. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies reveal moderate interactions between the metal centres in the 35-electron dications [{Cp*(dppe)Ru}(mu-C&3bond; CC&3bond; N){RuL2Cp'}](2+) Ru(PPh3)(2)CP, Ru(dppe)Cp*).

Radical cations of a soluble rigid tetrathienoacene are capable of forming stable p-dimer dications at ambient temperature when the short backbone becomes extended with conjugated thiophene-2-yl substituents in the a-positions. On the other hand, simple attachment of methyl groups on the a-carbon of the external thiophen-2-yl rings proved sufficient to inhibit the dimerization. Stable radical cationswere also exclusively formed for tetrathienoacene derivatives end-capped with bulky TIPS and phenyl substituents.

The dissymmetrical naphthalene-bridged complexes [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*] (3; Cp* = η5-C5Me5, Cp′ = η5-C5H2-1,2,4-tBu3) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (4) were synthesized via a one-pot procedure from FeCl2(thf)1.5, Cp′K, KC10H8, and [Cp* FeCl(tmeda)] (tmeda = N,N,N′,N′- tetramethylethylenediamine) or [Cp*RuCl]4, respectively. The symmetrically substituted iron ruthenium complex [Cp*Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (5) bearing two Cp* ligands was prepared as a reference compound. Compounds 3−5 are diamagnetic and display similar molecular structures, where the metal atoms are coordinated to opposite sides of the bridging naphthalene molecule. Cyclic voltammetry and UV/vis spectroelectrochemistry studies revealed that neutral 3−5 can be oxidized to monocations 3+−5+ and dications 32+−52+. The chemical oxidation of 3 and 4 with [Cp2Fe]PF6 afforded the paramagnetic hexafluorophosphate salts [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*]PF6 ([3]PF6) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*]PF6 ([4]PF6), which were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including EPR and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The molecular structure of [4]PF6 was determined by X-ray crystallography. DFT calculations support the structural and spectroscopic data and determine the compositions of frontier molecular orbitals in the investigated complexes. The effects of substituting Cp* with Cp′ and Fe with Ru on the electronic structures and the structural and spectroscopic properties are analyzed.

Radical cations of a heptathienoacene a,b-substituted with four n-decyl side groups (D4T7C+) form exceptionally stable p-dimer dications already at ambient temperature (Chem. Comm. 2011, 47, 12622). This extraordinary p-dimerization process is investigated here with a focus on the ultimate[D4T7C+]2 p-dimer dication and yet-unreported transitoryspecies formed during and after the oxidation. To this end, we use a joint experimental and theoretical approach that combines cyclic voltammetry, in situ spectrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The impact of temperature, thienoacene concentration, and the nature and concentration of counteranions on the p-dimerization process is also investigated in detail. Two different transitory species were detected in the course of the one-electron oxidation: 1) a different transient conformation of the ultimate [D4T7C+]2 p-dimer dications, the stability of which is strongly affected by the applied experimental conditions, and 2) intermediate [D4T7]2C+ p-dimer radical cations formed prior to the fully oxidized [D4T7]2C+ p-dimer dications. Thus, this comprehensive work demonstrates the formation of peculiar supramolecular species of heptathienoacene radical cations, the stability, nature, and structure of which have been successfully analyzed. We therefore believe that this study leads to a deeper fundamental understanding of the mechanism of dimer formation between conjugated aromatic systems.
