In this work, we investigated the temperature dependence of short and long-range ferroelectric ordering in Pb(0.55)La(0.30)TiO(3) relaxor composition. High-resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements revealed a clear spontaneous macroscopic cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition in the PLT relaxor sample at similar to 60 K below the maximum of the dielectric constant peak (T(m)). Indeed, the x-ray diffraction (XRD) data showed that at 300 K (above T(m) but below the Burns temperature, T(B)) the long-range order structure corresponds to a macroscopic cubic symmetry, space group number 221 (Pm-3m), whereas the data collected at 20 K revealed a macroscopic tetragonal symmetry, space group number 99 (P4mm) with c/a=1.0078, that is comparable to that of a normal ferroelectric. These results show that for samples with tetragonal composition, the long-range ferroelectric order may be recovered spontaneously at cryogenics temperatures, in contrast to ferroelectric samples with rhombohedral symmetry. On the other hand, x-ray absorption spectroscopy investigations intriguingly revealed the existence of local tetragonal disorder around Ti atoms for temperatures far below T(m) and above T(B), for which the sample presents macroscopic tetragonal and cubic symmetries, respectively. Welded equipment for cryogenic applications is utilized in chemical, petrochemical, and metallurgical industries. One material suitable for cryogenic application is austenitic stainless steel, which usually doesn`t present ductile/brittle transition temperature, except in the weld metal, where the presence of ferrite and micro inclusions can promote a brittle failure, either by ferrite cleavage or dimple nucleation and growth, respectively. A 25-mm- (1-in.-) thick AISI 304 stainless steel base metal was welded with the SAW process using a 308L solid wire and two kinds of fluxes and constant voltage power sources with two types of electrical outputs: direct current electrode positive and balanced square wave alternating current. The welded joints were analyzed by chemical composition, microstructure characterization, room temperature mechanical properties, and CVN impact test at -100 degrees C (-73 degrees F). Results showed that an increase of chromium and nickel content was observed in all weld beads compared to base metal. The chromium and nickel equivalents ratio for the weld beads were always higher for welding with square wave AC for the two types of fluxes than for direct current. The modification in the Cr(eq)/Ni(eq) ratio changes the delta ferrite morphology and, consequently, modifies the weld bead toughness at lower temperatures. The oxygen content can also affect the toughness in the weld bead. The highest absorbed energy in a CVN impact test was obtained for the welding condition with square wave AC electrical output and neutral flux, followed by DC(+) electrical output and neutral flux, and square wave AC electrical output and alloyed flux.

FinFETs are recognized as promising candidates for the CMOS nanometer era. In this paper the most recent results for cryogenic operation of FinFETs will be demonstrated with special emphasis on analog applications. Threshold voltage, subthreshold slope and carrier mobility will be studied. Also some important figures of merit for analog circuit operation as for readout electronics, such as transconductance, output conductance and intrinsic voltage gain will be covered. It is demonstrated that the threshold voltage of undoped narrow FinFETs is less temperature-dependent than for a planar single-gate device with similar doping concentration. The temperature reduction improves the transconductance over drain current ratio in any operational region. On the other hand, the output conductance is degraded when the temperature is reduced. The combination of these effects shows that the intrinsic gain of a L = 90 nm FinFET is degraded by 2 dB when the temperature reduces from 300 K to 100 K. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work studies the operation of source-follower buffers implemented with standard and graded-channel (GC) fully depleted (FD) SCI nMOSFETs at low temperatures. The analysis is performed by comparing the voltage gain of buffers implemented with GC and standard SOI nMOS transistors considering devices with the same mask channel length and same effective channel length. It is shown that the use of GC devices allows for achieving improved gain in all inversion levels in a wide range of temperatures. In addition, this improvement increases as temperature is reduced. It is shown that GC transistors can provide virtually constant gain, while for standard devices, the gain departs from the maximum value depending on the temperature and inversion level imposed by the bias current and input voltage. Two-dimensional numerical simulations were performed in order to study the reasons for the enhanced gain of GC MOSFETs at low temperatures. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cryogen-free superconducting magnet systems have become popular during the last two decades for the simple reason that with the use of liquid helium is rather cumbersome and is a scarce resource. Some available CFMS uses a mechanical cryocooler as cold source of the superconductor magnet. However, the cooling of the sample holder is still made through an open circuit of helium. A thermal management of a completely cryogen-free system is possible to be implemented by using a controlled gas gap heat switch (GGHS) between the cryocooler and the variable temperature insert (VTI). This way it would eliminate the helium open circuit. Heat switches are devices that allow to toggle between two distinct thermal states (ON and OFF state). Several cryogenic applications need good thermal contact and a good thermal insulation at different stages of operation. A versatile GGHS was designed and built with a 100 mm gap and tested with helium as exchange gas. An analytic thermal model was developed and a good agreement with the experimental data was obtained. The device was tested on a crycooler at 4 to 80 K ranges. A 285 mW/K thermal conductance was measured at ON state and 0.09 mW/K at OFF. 3000 ON/OFF thermal conductance ratio was obtained at 4 K with helium.

Background: The objective of this study was to improve the feasibility of applying topic 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) in photodiagnosis (PD) and treatment of condyloma caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) using two homemade handheld devices and to discuss the photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a suitable alternative for each of the cases studied. Both, protoporphyrin IX production and photodegradation were analyzed, and the pain experienced during the illumination was correlated with the light intensities. Methods: A total of 40 women with different grades of lesions caused by HPV were chosen from patients of the School of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto (University of Sao Paulo) and of the Unit of Public Health of Araraquara, Sao Paulo. Results: We did not encounter any unexpected difficulties using our devices during the treatment. The existence of an easily observable reddish fluorescence with large intensity concentrated on the Lesions is the clinical indication of the penetration and the selective concentration of protoporphyrin IX in the clinical and subclinical lesions rather than in the healthy tissue. The aesthetic results were much better than those obtained by conventional techniques as surgery or cryogenics, with no recurrence reported after two years of treatment. Conclusions: Our results are proof for the various advantages using ALA cream for the PD and PDT in many different cases of condyloma by HPV. This study will be continued to investigate the PpIX photobleaching and the irradiance and fluence rate to optimize conducting the clinical trials, to improve the devices and therefore increase the treatment response. [EN]Two cryopreservation methods, controlled cooling and encapsulation/vitrification, were studied in order to find an appropriate protocol to maintain microalgae cultures by exposing them to ultra-low temperatures (cryogenics). This study has shown that the most efficient cryopreserving method is the use of cryoprotectants, being Glycerol and DMSO the best options for this procedure, and dismissing the encapsulation/vitrification method due to the low effectiveness, which results in a low post-thaw viability rate and a higher demanding of labour and consumables.
