Between October 6, 1997 and April 30, 1999, 5011 births (mean: 8.76 per day) were registered in the city of Passo Fundo, South Brazil. The sequence of 572 daily birth numbers was not random (iteration test). Neyman distribution (m = ¥) showed the best fit. Clusters of days with higher birth numbers alternated with days with low numbers of births. Periodogram analysis revealed a significant periodicity of 6.98 days. The cosinor regression, testing 10 a priori supposed period lengths, found significant seasonality peaking in August-September and significantly highest birth numbers on Thursdays. Among the lunar and solar rotation cycles, the tropic lunar cycle and its 4th harmonic were most pronounced, in agreement with results concerning natality in Germany obtained by Svante Arrhenius in the 19th century. These findings confirm Derer-Halberg's concept of multiseptans. In addition to cycling, a significantly increasing linear trend with a daily increase of 0.0045 births was encountered. This documents a growth of the population in agreement with national statistical data.

Evaluation of gastrointestinal motility in awake rats: a learning exercise for undergraduate biomedical students. Adv Physiol Educ 33: 343-348, 2009; doi: 10.1152/advan.90176.2008.-Current medical curricula devote scarce time for practical activities on digestive physiology, despite frequent misconceptions about dyspepsia and dysmotility phenomena. Thus, we designed a hands-on activity followed by a small-group discussion on gut motility. Male awake rats were randomly submitted to insulin, control, or hypertonic protocols. Insulin and control rats were gavage fed with 5% glucose solution, whereas hypertonic-fed rats were gavage fed with 50% glucose solution. Insulin treatment was performed 30 min before a meal. All meals (1.5 ml) contained an equal mass of phenol red dye. After 10, 15, or 20 min of meal gavage, rats were euthanized. Each subset consisted of six to eight rats. Dye recovery in the stomach and proximal, middle, and distal small intestine was measured by spectrophotometry, a safe and reliable method that can be performed by minimally trained students. In a separate group of rats, we used the same protocols except that the test meal contained (99m)Tc as a marker. Compared with control, the hypertonic meal delayed gastric emptying and gastrointestinal transit, whereas insulinic hypoglycemia accelerated them. The session helped engage our undergraduate students in observing and analyzing gut motor behavior. In conclusion, the fractional dye retention test can be used as a teaching tool to strengthen the understanding of basic physiopathological features of gastrointestinal motility.

In recent years, magnetic nanoparticles have been studied due to their potential applications as magnetic carriers in biomedical area. These materials have been increasingly exploited as efficient delivery vectors, leading to opportunities of use as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents, mediators of hyperthermia cancer treatment and in targeted therapies. Much attention has been also focused on ""smart"" polymers, which are able to respond to environmental changes, such as changes in the temperature and pH. In this context, this article reviews the state-of-the art in stimuli-responsive magnetic systems for biomedical applications. The paper describes different types of stimuli-sensitive systems, mainly temperature- and pH sensitive polymers, the combination of this characteristic with magnetic properties and, finally, it gives an account of their preparation methods. The article also discusses the main in vivo biomedical applications of such materials. A survey of the recent literature on various stimuli-responsive magnetic gels in biomedical applications is also included. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The goal of this paper is to study and propose a new technique for noise reduction used during the reconstruction of speech signals, particularly for biomedical applications. The proposed method is based on Kalman filtering in the time domain combined with spectral subtraction. Comparison with discrete Kalman filter in the frequency domain shows better performance of the proposed technique. The performance is evaluated by using the segmental signal-to-noise ratio and the Itakura-Saito`s distance. Results have shown that Kalman`s filter in time combined with spectral subtraction is more robust and efficient, improving the Itakura-Saito`s distance by up to four times. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: In premolar extraction cases, root parallelism is recommended to preserve the stability of space closures. The influence of the degree of root parallelism on relapse of tooth extraction spaces has been a controversial topic in the literature. The aim of this study was to compare the angle between the long axes of the canine and the second premolarin patients with and without stability of extraction-space closures. Methods: A sample of 56 patients, treated with 4 premolar extractions, was divided into 2 groups: group 1, consisting of 25 patients with reopening of extraction spaces; and group 2, consisting of 31 patients without reopening of extraction spaces. Panoramic radiographs of each patient were analyzed at the posttreatment and 1-year posttreatment stages. The data were statistically analyzed by using chi-square tests, t tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The results showed that the groups did not differ regarding the angle between the canine and the second premolar, and there was no correlation between angular changes and reopening of extraction spaces, showing that dental angular changes are not determining factors for relapse, and other factors should be investigated. Conclusions: The final angle and the posttreatment changes observed in the angle between the long axes of the canine and the second premolar showed no influence on the relapse of extraction spaces. This article describes a new test method for the assessment of the severity of environmental stress cracking of biomedical polyurethanes in a manner that minimizes the degree of subjectivity involved. The effect of applied strain and acetone pre-treatment on degradation of Pellethane 2363 80A and Pellethane 2363 55D polyurethanes under in vitro and in vivo conditions is studied. The results are presented using a magnification-weighted image rating system that allows the semi-quantitative rating of degradation based on distribution and severity of surface damage. Devices for applying controlled strain to both flat sheet and tubing samples are described. The new rating system consistently discriminated between. the effects of acetone pre-treatments, strain and exposure times in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. As expected, P80A underwent considerable stress cracking compared with P55D. P80A produced similar stress crack ratings in both in vivo and in vitro experiments, however P55D performed worse under in vitro conditions compared with in vivo. This result indicated that care must be taken when interpreting in vitro results in the absence of in vivo data. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoethylene) electrospun membranes were obtained from a blend of dimethylformamide (DMF) and methylethylketone (MEK) solvents. The inclusion of the MEK to the solvent system promotes a faster solvent evaporation allowing complete polymer crystallization during the jet travelling between the tip and the grounded collector. Several processing parameters were systematically changed to study their influence on fiber dimensions. Applied voltage and inner needle diameter do not have large influence on the electrospun fiber average diameter but in the fiber diameter distribution. On the other hand, the increase of the distance between the needle tip to collector results in fibers with larger average diameter. Independently on the processing conditions, all mats are produced in the electroactive phase of the polymer. Further, MC-3T3-E1cell adhesion was not inhibited by the fiber mats preparation, indicating their potential use for biomedical applications.

Development of suitable membranes is a fundamental requisite for tissue and biomedical engineering applications. This work presents fish gelatin random and aligned electrospun membranes cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (GA). It was observed that the fiber average diameter and the morphology is not influenced by the GA exposure time and presents fibers with an average diameter around 250 nm. Moreover, when the gelatin mats are immersed in a phosphate buffered saline solution (PBS), they can retain as much as 12 times its initial weight of solution almost instantaneously, but the material microstructure of the fiber mats changes from the characteristic fibrous to an almost spherical porous structure. Cross-linked gelatin electrospun fiber mats and films showed a water vapor permeability of 1.37 ± 0.02 and 0.13 ± 0.10 (g.mm)/(m2.h.kPa), respectively. Finally, the processing technique and cross-linking process does not inhibit MC-3T3-E1 cell adhesion. Preliminary cell culture results showed good cell adhesion and proliferation in the cross-linked random and aligned gelatin fiber mats.

Os sistemas de tempo real modernos geram, cada vez mais, cargas computacionais pesadas e dinâmicas, começando-se a tornar pouco expectável que sejam implementados em sistemas uniprocessador. Na verdade, a mudança de sistemas com um único processador para sistemas multi- processador pode ser vista, tanto no domínio geral, como no de sistemas embebidos, como uma forma eficiente, em termos energéticos, de melhorar a performance das aplicações. Simultaneamente, a proliferação das plataformas multi-processador transformaram a programação paralela num tópico de elevado interesse, levando o paralelismo dinâmico a ganhar rapidamente popularidade como um modelo de programação. A ideia, por detrás deste modelo, é encorajar os programadores a exporem todas as oportunidades de paralelismo através da simples indicação de potenciais regiões paralelas dentro das aplicações. Todas estas anotações são encaradas pelo sistema unicamente como sugestões, podendo estas serem ignoradas e substituídas, por construtores sequenciais equivalentes, pela própria linguagem. Assim, o modo como a computação é na realidade subdividida, e mapeada nos vários processadores, é da responsabilidade do compilador e do sistema computacional subjacente. Ao retirar este fardo do programador, a complexidade da programação é consideravelmente reduzida, o que normalmente se traduz num aumento de produtividade. Todavia, se o mecanismo de escalonamento subjacente não for simples e rápido, de modo a manter o overhead geral em níveis reduzidos, os benefícios da geração de um paralelismo com uma granularidade tão fina serão meramente hipotéticos. Nesta perspetiva de escalonamento, os algoritmos que empregam uma política de workstealing são cada vez mais populares, com uma eficiência comprovada em termos de tempo, espaço e necessidades de comunicação. Contudo, estes algoritmos não contemplam restrições temporais, nem outra qualquer forma de atribuição de prioridades às tarefas, o que impossibilita que sejam diretamente aplicados a sistemas de tempo real. Além disso, são tradicionalmente implementados no runtime da linguagem, criando assim um sistema de escalonamento com dois níveis, onde a previsibilidade, essencial a um sistema de tempo real, não pode ser assegurada. Nesta tese, é descrita a forma como a abordagem de work-stealing pode ser resenhada para cumprir os requisitos de tempo real, mantendo, ao mesmo tempo, os seus princípios fundamentais que tão bons resultados têm demonstrado. Muito resumidamente, a única fila de gestão de processos convencional (deque) é substituída por uma fila de deques, ordenada de forma crescente por prioridade das tarefas. De seguida, aplicamos por cima o conhecido algoritmo de escalonamento dinâmico G-EDF, misturamos as regras de ambos, e assim nasce a nossa proposta: o algoritmo de escalonamento RTWS. Tirando partido da modularidade oferecida pelo escalonador do Linux, o RTWS é adicionado como uma nova classe de escalonamento, de forma a avaliar na prática se o algoritmo proposto é viável, ou seja, se garante a eficiência e escalonabilidade desejadas. Modificar o núcleo do Linux é uma tarefa complicada, devido à complexidade das suas funções internas e às fortes interdependências entre os vários subsistemas. Não obstante, um dos objetivos desta tese era ter a certeza que o RTWS é mais do que um conceito interessante. Assim, uma parte significativa deste documento é dedicada à discussão sobre a implementação do RTWS e à exposição de situações problemáticas, muitas delas não consideradas em teoria, como é o caso do desfasamento entre vários mecanismo de sincronização. Os resultados experimentais mostram que o RTWS, em comparação com outro trabalho prático de escalonamento dinâmico de tarefas com restrições temporais, reduz significativamente o overhead de escalonamento através de um controlo de migrações, e mudanças de contexto, eficiente e escalável (pelo menos até 8 CPUs), ao mesmo tempo que alcança um bom balanceamento dinâmico da carga do sistema, até mesmo de uma forma não custosa. Contudo, durante a avaliação realizada foi detetada uma falha na implementação do RTWS, pela forma como facilmente desiste de roubar trabalho, o que origina períodos de inatividade, no CPU em questão, quando a utilização geral do sistema é baixa. Embora o trabalho realizado se tenha focado em manter o custo de escalonamento baixo e em alcançar boa localidade dos dados, a escalonabilidade do sistema nunca foi negligenciada. Na verdade, o algoritmo de escalonamento proposto provou ser bastante robusto, não falhando qualquer meta temporal nas experiências realizadas. Portanto, podemos afirmar que alguma inversão de prioridades, causada pela sub-política de roubo BAS, não compromete os objetivos de escalonabilidade, e até ajuda a reduzir a contenção nas estruturas de dados. Mesmo assim, o RTWS também suporta uma sub-política de roubo determinística: PAS. A avaliação experimental, porém, não ajudou a ter uma noção clara do impacto de uma e de outra. No entanto, de uma maneira geral, podemos concluir que o RTWS é uma solução promissora para um escalonamento eficiente de tarefas paralelas com restrições temporais.

Developing an efficient server-based real-time scheduling solution that supports dynamic task-level parallelism is now relevant to even the desktop and embedded domains and no longer only to the high performance computing market niche. This paper proposes a novel approach that combines the constantbandwidth server abstraction with a work-stealing load balancing scheme which, while ensuring isolation among tasks, enables a task to be executed on more than one processor at a given time instant.

We all hope that biotechnology will answer some social and economical unavoidable requirements of the modern life. It is necessary to improve agriculture production, food abundance and health quality in a sustainable development. It is indeed a hard task to keep the progress on taking into account the rational use of genetic resources and the conservation of biodiversity. In this context, a historical perspective and prospects of the biomedical research on parasitic diseases is described in a view of three generations of investigators. This work begins with a picture of the scientific progress on biomedical research and human health over the last centuries. This black-and-white picture is painted by dissecting current advancements of molecular biology and modern genetics, which are outlined at the meaning of prospecting achievements in health science for this new millenium.
