A procedure for designing the optimal bounded control of strongly non-linear oscillators under combined harmonic and white-noise excitations for minimizing their first-passage failure is proposed. First, a stochastic averaging method for strongly non-linear oscillators under combined harmonic and white-noise excitations using generalized harmonic functions is introduced. Then, the dynamical programming equations and their boundary and final time conditions for the control problems of maximizing reliability and of maximizing mean first-passage time are formulated from the averaged Ito equations by using the dynamical programming principle. The optimal control law is derived from the dynamical programming equations and control constraint. Finally, the conditional reliability function, the conditional probability density and mean of the first-passage time of the optimally controlled system are obtained from solving the backward Kolmogorov equation and Pontryagin equation. An example is given to illustrate the proposed procedure and the results obtained are verified by using those from digital simulation. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We consider free time optimal control problems with pointwise set control constraints u(t) ∈ U(t). Here we derive necessary conditions of optimality for those problem where the set U(t) is defined by equality and inequality control constraints. The main ingredients of our analysis are a well known time transformation and recent results on necessary conditions for mixed state-control constraints. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper studies the average control problem of discrete-time Markov Decision Processes (MDPs for short) with general state space, Feller transition probabilities, and possibly non-compact control constraint sets A(x). Two hypotheses are considered: either the cost function c is strictly unbounded or the multifunctions A(r)(x) = {a is an element of A(x) : c(x, a) <= r} are upper-semicontinuous and compact-valued for each real r. For these two cases we provide new results for the existence of a solution to the average-cost optimality equality and inequality using the vanishing discount approach. We also study the convergence of the policy iteration approach under these conditions. It should be pointed out that we do not make any assumptions regarding the convergence and the continuity of the limit function generated by the sequence of relative difference of the alpha-discounted value functions and the Poisson equations as often encountered in the literature. This paper presents a robust hybrid force/position control scheme of two cooperative manipulators handling an unknown object interacting with an unknown environment. The uncertainty of the object is considered in the weight, length, and the position of centre of mass (COM). The environment is assumed to have an unknown but high stiffness. A hybrid force/position control algorithm is designed for the known system and environment case. The exponential convergence of the position and the interaction force with the environment is proved using the Lyapunov direct method. Similarly, in the unknown object and environment case, and in the presence of bounded disturbances on the robots and the object, an adaptive sliding mode hybrid force/position control scheme is designed. The asymptotic convergence of the object's position and the constraint force is guaranteed using the proposed control methodology. The internal forces and moments between the object and robots are controlled independently of the object's motion and environmental interaction forces. Simulation results confirm the performance and effectiveness of the suggested control methodologies.

We consider an optimal power and rate scheduling problem for a multiaccess fading wireless channel with the objective of minimising a weighted sum of mean packet transmission delay subject to a peak power constraint. The base station acts as a controller which, depending upon the buffer lengths and the channel state of each user, allocates transmission rate and power to individual users. We assume perfect channel state information at the transmitter and the receiver. We also assume a Markov model for the fading and packet arrival processes. The policy obtained represents a form of Indexability.

This paper develops a technique for improving the region of attraction of a robust variable horizon model predictive controller. It considers a constrained discrete-time linear system acted upon by a bounded, but unknown time-varying state disturbance. Using constraint tightening for robustness, it is shown how the tightening policy, parameterised as direct feedback on the disturbance, can be optimised to increase the volume of an inner approximation to the controller's true region of attraction. Numerical examples demonstrate the benefits of the policy in increasing region of attraction volume and decreasing the maximum prediction horizon length. © 2012 IEEE.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Internet of Things (IoT) integration has thrown many critical challenges. Specifically, in heterogeneous SDN-IoT ecosystem, optimized resources utilization and effective management at the control layer is very difficult. This mainly affects the application specific Quality of Service (QoS) and energy consumption of the IoT network. Motivated from this, we propose a new Resource Management (RM) method at the control layer, in distributed SDN-IoT networks. This paper starts with reasons that why at control layer RM is more complex in the SDN-IoT ecosystem. After-that, we highlight motivated examples that necessitate to investigate new RM methods in SDN-IoT context. Further, we propose a novel method to compute controller performance. Theoretical analysis is conducted to prove that the proposed method is better than the existing methods.

The paper addresses the issue of providing access control via delegation and constraint management across multiple security domains. Specifically, this paper proposes a novel Delegation Constraint Management model to manage and enforce delegation constraints across security domains. An algorithm to trace the authority of delegation constraints is introduced as well as an algorithm to form a delegation constraint set and detect/prevent potential conflicts. The algorithms and the management model are built upon a set of formal definitions of delegation constraints. In addition, a constraint profile based on XACML is proposed as a means to express the delegation constraint. The paper also includes a protocol to exchange delegation constraints (in the form of user commitments) between the involved entities in the delegation process.

There have been notable advances in learning to control complex robotic systems using methods such as Locally Weighted Regression (LWR). In this paper we explore some potential limits of LWR for robotic applications, particularly investigating its application to systems with a long horizon of temporal dependence. We define the horizon of temporal dependence as the delay from a control input to a desired change in output. LWR alone cannot be used in a temporally dependent system to find meaningful control values from only the current state variables and output, as the relationship between the input and the current state is under-constrained. By introducing a receding horizon of the future output states of the system, we show that sufficient constraint is applied to learn good solutions through LWR. The new method, Receding Horizon Locally Weighted Regression (RH-LWR), is demonstrated through one-shot learning on a real Series Elastic Actuator controlling a pendulum.
