A new `generalized model predictive static programming (G-MPSP)' technique is presented in this paper in the continuous time framework for rapidly solving a class of finite-horizon nonlinear optimal control problems with hard terminal constraints. A key feature of the technique is backward propagation of a small-dimensional weight matrix dynamics, using which the control history gets updated. This feature, as well as the fact that it leads to a static optimization problem, are the reasons for its high computational efficiency. It has been shown that under Euler integration, it is equivalent to the existing model predictive static programming technique, which operates on a discrete-time approximation of the problem. Performance of the proposed technique is demonstrated by solving a challenging three-dimensional impact angle constrained missile guidance problem. The problem demands that the missile must meet constraints on both azimuth and elevation angles in addition to achieving near zero miss distance, while minimizing the lateral acceleration demand throughout its flight path. Both stationary and maneuvering ground targets are considered in the simulation studies. Effectiveness of the proposed guidance has been verified by considering first order autopilot lag as well as various target maneuvers.

In this article, we study risk-sensitive control problem with controlled continuous time Markov chain state dynamics. Using multiplicative dynamic programming principle along with the atomic structure of the state dynamics, we prove the existence and a characterization of optimal risk-sensitive control under geometric ergodicity of the state dynamics along with a smallness condition on the running cost.

The aim of this technical report is to present some detailed explanations in order to help to understand and use the Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallel programming for solving several mixed integer optimization problems. We have developed a C++ experimental code that uses the IBM ILOG CPLEX optimizer within the COmputational INfrastructure for Operations Research (COIN-OR) and MPI parallel computing for solving the optimization models under UNIX-like systems. The computational experience illustrates how can we solve 44 optimization problems which are asymmetric with respect to the number of integer and continuous variables and the number of constraints. We also report a comparative with the speedup and efficiency of several strategies implemented for some available number of threads.

A dynamic programming algorithm for joint data detection and carrier phase estimation of continuous-phase-modulated signal is presented. The intent is to combine the robustness of noncoherent detectors with the superior performance of coherent ones. The algorithm differs from the Viterbi algorithm only in the metric that it maximizes over the possible transmitted data sequences. This metric is influenced both by the correlation with the received signal and the current estimate of the carrier phase. Carrier-phase estimation is based on decision guiding, but there is no external phase-locked loop. Instead, the phase of the best complex correlation with the received signal over the last few signaling intervals is used. The algorithm is slightly more complex than the coherent Viterbi algorithm but does not require narrowband filtering of the recovered carrier, as earlier appproaches did, to achieve the same level of performance.

We study the problem of finding a local minimum of a multilinear function E over the discrete set {0,1}n. The search is achieved by a gradient-like system in [0,1]n with cost function E. Under mild restrictions on the metric, the stable attractors of the gradient-like system are shown to produce solutions of the problem, even when they are not in the vicinity of the discrete set {0,1}n. Moreover, the gradient-like system connects with interior point methods for linear programming and with the analog neural network studied by Vidyasagar (IEEE Trans. Automat. Control 40 (8) (1995) 1359), in the same context. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fuzzy answer set programming (FASP) is a generalization of answer set programming to continuous domains. As it can not readily take uncertainty into account, however, FASP is not suitable as a basis for approximate reasoning and cannot easily be used to derive conclusions from imprecise information. To cope with this, we propose an extension of FASP based on possibility theory. The resulting framework allows us to reason about uncertain information in continuous domains, and thus also about information that is imprecise or vague. We propose a syntactic procedure, based on an immediate consequence operator, and provide a characterization in terms of minimal models, which allows us to straightforwardly implement our framework using existing FASP solvers.

This work describes how genetic programming is applied to evolving controllers for the minimum time swing up and inverted balance tasks of the continuous state and action: limited torque acrobot. The best swing-up controller is able to swing the acrobot up to a position very close to the inverted ‘handstand’ position in a very short time, shorter than that of Coulom (2004), who applied the same constraints on the applied torque values, and to take only slightly longer than the approach by Lai et al. (2009) where far larger torque values were allowed. The best balance controller is able to balance the acrobot in the inverted position when starting from the balance position for the length of time used in the fitness function in all runs; furthermore, 47 out of 50 of the runs evolve controllers able to maintain the balance position for an extended period, an improvement on the balance controllers generated by Dracopoulos and Nichols (2012), which this paper is extended from. The most successful balance controller is also able to balance the acrobot when starting from a small offset from the balance position for this extended period.

In This work we present a Web-based tool developed with the aim of reinforcing teaching and learning of introductory programming courses. This tool provides support for teaching and learning. From the teacher's perspective the system introduces important gains with respect to the classical teaching methodology. It reinforces lecture and laboratory sessions, makes it possible to give personalized attention to the student, assesses the degree of participation of the students and most importantly, performs a continuous assessment of the student's progress. From the student's perspective it provides a learning framework, consisting in a help environment and a correction environment, which facilitates their personal work. With this tool students are more motivated to do programming

Model trees are a particular case of decision trees employed to solve regression problems. They have the advantage of presenting an interpretable output, helping the end-user to get more confidence in the prediction and providing the basis for the end-user to have new insight about the data, confirming or rejecting hypotheses previously formed. Moreover, model trees present an acceptable level of predictive performance in comparison to most techniques used for solving regression problems. Since generating the optimal model tree is an NP-Complete problem, traditional model tree induction algorithms make use of a greedy top-down divide-and-conquer strategy, which may not converge to the global optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm based on the use of the evolutionary algorithms paradigm as an alternate heuristic to generate model trees in order to improve the convergence to globally near-optimal solutions. We call our new approach evolutionary model tree induction (E-Motion). We test its predictive performance using public UCI data sets, and we compare the results to traditional greedy regression/model trees induction algorithms, as well as to other evolutionary approaches. Results show that our method presents a good trade-off between predictive performance and model comprehensibility, which may be crucial in many machine learning applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The paper presents a constructive heuristic algorithm (CHA) for solving directly the long-term transmission-network-expansion-planning (LTTNEP) problem using the DC model. The LTTNEP is a very complex mixed-integer nonlinear-programming problem and presents a combinatorial growth in the search space. The CHA is used to find a solution for the LTTNEP problem of good quality. A sensitivity index is used in each step of the CHA to add circuits to the system. This sensitivity index is obtained by solving the relaxed problem of LTTNEP, i.e. considering the number of circuits to be added as a continuous variable. The relaxed problem is a large and complex nonlinear-programming problem and was solved through the interior-point method (IPM). Tests were performed using Garver's system, the modified IEEE 24-Bus system and the Southern Brazilian reduced system. The results presented show the good performance of IPM inside the CHA.
