Objectives The aim of this study was to histomorphometrically evaluate the influence of interimplant distances (ID) and implant placement depth on bone remodeling around contiguous Morse cone connection implants with `platform-shifting` in a dog model. Material and methods Bilateral mandibular premolars of six dogs were extracted, and after 12 weeks, each dog received 8 implants, four placed 1.5 mm subcrestally (SCL) on one side of the mandible and four placed equicrestally (ECL) on the other side, alternating the ID of 2 and 3 mm. The experimental groups were SCL with IDs of 2 mm (2 SCL) and 3 mm (3 SCL) and ECL with IDs of 2 mm (2 ECL) and 3 mm (3 ECL). Metallic crowns were immediately installed. After 8 weeks, the animals were euthanized and histomorphometric analyses were performed to compare bone remodeling in the groups. Results The SCL groups` indices of crestal bone resorption were significantly lower than those of ECL groups. In addition, the vertical bone resorption around the implants was also numerically inferior in the SCL groups, but without statistical significance. No differences were obtained between the different IDs. All the groups presented similar good levels of bone-to-implant contact and histological bone density. Conclusion The subcrestal placement of contiguous Morse cone connection implants with `platform shifting` was more efficient in preserving the interimplant crestal bone. Contact aureoles provide an excellent geologic environment to study the mechanisms of metamorphic reactions in a natural system. The Torres del Paine (TP) intrusion is one of the most spectacular natural laboratories because of its excellent outcrop conditions. It formed in a period from 12.59 to 12.43 Ma and consists of three large granite and four smaller mafic batches. The oldest granite is on top, the youngest at the bottom of the granitic complex, and the granites overly the mafic laccolith. The TP intruded at a depth of 2-3 km into regional metamorphic anchizone to greenschist facies pelites, sandstones, and conglomerates of the Cerro Toro and Punta Barrosa formations. It formed a thin contact aureole of 150-400 m width. This thesis focuses on the reaction kinetics of the mineral cordierite in the contact aureole using quantitative textural analysis methods. First cordierite was formed from chlorite break¬down (zone I, ca. 480 °C, 750 bar). The second cordierite forming reaction was the muscovite break-down, which is accompanied by a modal decrease in biotite and the appearance of k- feldspar (zone II, 540-550 °C, 750 bar). Crystal sizes of the roundish, poikiloblastic cordierites were determined from microscope thin section images by manually marking each crystal. Images were then automatically processed with Matlab. The correction for the intersection probability of each crystal radius yields the crystal size distribution in the rock. Samples from zone I below the laccolith have the largest crystals (0.09 mm). Cordierites from zone II are smaller, with a maximum crystal radius of 0.057 mm. Rocks from zone II have a larger number of small cordierite crystals than rocks from zone I. A combination of these quantitative analysis with numerical modeling of nucleation and growth, is used to infer nucleation and growth parameters which are responsible for the observed mineral textures. For this, the temperature-time paths of the samples need to be known. The thermal history is complex because the main body of the intrusion was formed by several intrusive batches. The emplacement mechanism and duration of each batch can influence the thermal structure in the aureole. A possible subdivision of batches in smaller increments, so called pulses, will focus heat at the side of the intrusion. Focusing all pulses on one side increases the contact aureole size on that side, but decreases it on the other side. It forms a strongly asymmetric contact aureole. Detailed modeling shows that the relative thicknesses of the TP contact aureole above and below the intrusion (150 and 400 m) are best explained by a rapid emplacement of at least the oldest granite batch. Nevertheless, temperatures are significantly too low in all models, compared to observed mineral assemblages in the hornfelses. Hence, an other important thermal mechanisms needs to take place in the host rock. Clastic minerals in the immature sediments outside the contact aureole are hydrated due to small amounts of expelled fluids during contact metamorphism. This leads to a temperature increase of up to 50 °C. The origin of fluids can be traced by stable isotopes. Whole rock stable isotope data (6D and δ180) and chlorine concentrations in biotite document that the TP intrusion induced only very small amounts of fluid flow. Oxygen whole rock data show δ180 values between 9.0 and 10.0 %o within the first 5 m of the contact. Values increase to 13.0 - 15.0 %o further away from the intrusion. Whole rock 6D values display a more complex zoning. First, host rock values (-90 to -70 %o) smoothly decrease towards the contact by ca. 20 %o, up to a distance of ca. 150 m. This is followed by an increase of ca. 20 %o within the innermost 150 m of the aureole (-97.0 to -78 %o at the contact). The initial decrease in 6D values is interpreted to be due to Rayleigh fractionation accompanying the dehydration reactions forming cordierite, while the final increase reflects infiltration of water-rich fluids from the intrusion. An over-estimate on the quantity and the corresponding thermal effect yields a temperature increase of less than 30 °C. This suggests that fluid flow might have contributed only for a small amount to the thermal evolution of the system. A combination of the numerical growth model with the thermal model, including the hydration reaction enthalpies but neglecting fluid flow and incremental growth, can be used to numerically reproduce the observed cordierite textures in the contact aureole. This yields kinetic parameters which indicate fast cordierite crystallization before the thermal peak in the inner aureole, and continued reaction after the thermal peak in the outermost aureole. Only small temperature dependencies of the kinetic parameters seem to be needed to explain the obtained crystal size data. - Les auréoles de contact offrent un cadre géologique privilégié pour l'étude des mécanismes de réactions métamorphiques associés à la mise en place de magmas dans la croûte terrestre. Par ses conditions d'affleurements excellentes, l'intrusion de Torres del Paine représente un site exceptionnel pour améliorer nos connaissances de ces processus. La formation de cette intrusion composée de trois injections granitiques principales et de quatre injections mafiques de volume inférieur couvre une période allant de 12.50 à 12.43 Ma. Le plus vieux granite forme la partie sommitale de l'intrusion alors que l'injection la plus jeune s'observe à la base du complexe granitique; les granites recouvrent la partie mafique du laccolite. L'intrusion du Torres del Paine s'est mise en place a 2-3 km de profondeur dans un encaissant métamorphique. Cet encaissant est caractérisé par un métamorphisme régional de faciès anchizonal à schiste vert et est composé de pélites, de grès, et des conglomérats des formations du Cerro Toro et Punta Barrosa. La mise en place des différentes injections granitiques a généré une auréole de contact de 150-400 m d'épaisseur autour de l'intrusion. Cette thèse se concentre sur la cinétique de réaction associée à la formation de la cordiérite dans les auréoles de contact en utilisant des méthodes quantitatives d'analyses de texture. On observe plusieurs générations de cordiérite dans l'auréole de contact. La première cordiérite est formée par la décomposition de la chlorite (zone I, environ 480 °C, 750 bar), alors qu'une seconde génération de cordiérite est associée à la décomposition de la muscovite, laquelle est accompagnée par une diminution modale de la teneur en biotite et l'apparition de feldspath potassique (zone II, 540-550 °C, 750 bar). Les tailles des cristaux de cordiérites arrondies et blastic ont été déterminées en utilisant des images digitalisées des lames minces et en marquant individuellement chaque cristal. Les images sont ensuite traitées automatiquement à l'aide du programme Matlab. La correction de la probabilité d'intersection en fonction du rayon des cristaux permet de déterminer la distribution de la taille des cristaux dans la roche. Les échantillons de la zone I, en dessous du lacolite, sont caractérisés par de relativement grands cristaux (0.09 mm). Les cristaux de cordiérite de la zone II sont plus petits, avec un rayon maximal de 0.057 mm. Les roches de la zone II présentent un plus grand nombre de petits cristaux de cordiérite que les roches de la zone I. Une combinaison de ces analyses quantitatives avec un modèle numérique de nucléation et croissance a été utilisée pour déduire les paramètres de nucléation et croissance contrôlant les différentes textures minérales observées. Pour développer le modèle de nucléation et de croissance, il est nécessaire de connaître le chemin température - temps des échantillons. L'histoire thermique est complexe parce que l'intrusion est produite par plusieurs injections successives. En effet, le mécanisme d'emplace¬ment et la durée de chaque injection peuvent influencer la structure thermique dans l'auréole. Une subdivision des injections en plus petits incréments, appelés puises, permet de concentrer la chaleur dans les bords de l'intrusion. Une mise en place préférentielle de ces puises sur un côté de l'intrusion modifie l'apport thermique et influence la taille de l'auréole de contact produite, auréole qui devient asymétrique. Dans le cas de la première injection de granite, une modélisation détaillée montre que l'épaisseur relative de l'auréole de contact de Torres del Paine au-dessus et en dessous de l'intrusion (150 et 400 m) est mieux expliquée par un emplacement rapide du granite. Néanmoins, les températures calculées dans l'auréole de con¬tact sont trop basses pour que les modèles thermiques soient cohérants par rapport à la taille de cette auréole. Ainsi, un autre mecanisme exothermique est nécessaire pour permettre à la roche encais¬sante de produire les assemblages observés. L'observation des roches encaissantes entourant les granites montre que les minéraux clastiques dans les sédiments immatures au-dehors de l'auréole sont hydratés suite à la petite quantité de fluide expulsée durant le métamorphisme de contact et/ou la mise en place des granites. Les réactions d'hydratation peuvent permettre une augmentation de la température jusqu'à 50 °C. Afin de déterminer l'origine des fluides, une étude isotopique de roches de l'auréole de contact a été entreprise. Les isotopes stables d'oxygène et d'hydrogène sur la roche totale ainsi que la concentration en chlore dans la biotite indiquent que la mise en place des granites du Torres del Paine n'induit qu'une circulation de fluide limitée. Les données d'oxygène sur roche totale montrent des valeurs δ180 entre 9.0 et 10.0%o au sein des cinq premiers mètres du contact. Les valeurs augmentent jusqu'à 13.0 - 15.0 plus on s'éloigne de l'intrusion. Les valeurs 5D sur roche totale montrent une zonation plus complexe. Les valeurs de la roche encaissante (-90 à -70%o) diminuent progressivement d'environ 20%o depuis l'extérieur de l'auréole jusqu'à une distance d'environ 150 m du granite. Cette diminution est suivie par une augmentation d'environ 20%o au sein des 150 mètres les plus proches du contact (-97.0 à -78%o au contact). La diminution initiale des valeurs de 6D est interprétée comme la conséquence du fractionnement de Rayleigh qui accompagne les réactions de déshydratation formant la cordiérite, alors que l'augmentation finale reflète l'infiltration de fluide riche en eau venant de l'intrusion. A partir de ces résultats, le volume du fluide issu du granite ainsi que son effet thermique a pu être estimé. Ces résultats montrent que l'augmentation de température associée à ces fluides est limitée à un maximum de 30 °C. La contribution de ces fluides dans le bilan thermique est donc faible. Ces différents résultats nous ont permis de créer un modèle thermique associé à la for¬mation de l'auréole de contact qui intègre la mise en place rapide du granite et les réactions d'hydratation lors du métamorphisme. L'intégration de ce modèle thermique dans le modèle numérique de croissance minérale nous permet de calculer les textures des cordiérites. Cepen¬dant, ce modèle est dépendant de la vitesse de croissance et de nucléation de ces cordiérites. Nous avons obtenu ces paramètres en comparant les textures prédites par le modèle et les textures observées dans les roches de l'auréole de contact du Torres del Paine. Les paramètres cinétiques extraits du modèle optimisé indiquent une cristallisation rapide de la cordiérite avant le pic thermique dans la partie interne de l'auréole, et une réaction continue après le pic thermique dans la partie la plus externe de l'auréole. Seules de petites dépendances de température des paramètres de cinétique semblent être nécessaires pour expliquer les don¬nées obtenues sur la distribution des tailles de cristaux. Ces résultats apportent un éclairage nouveau sur la cinétique qui contrôle les réactions métamorphiques.

Canuto (2011) Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology37, 570-584 Contact sport-related chronic traumatic encephalopathy in the elderly: clinical expression and structural substrates Professional boxers and other contact sport athletes are exposed to repetitive brain trauma that may affect motor functions, cognitive performance, emotional regulation and social awareness. The term of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) was recently introduced to regroup a wide spectrum of symptoms such as cerebellar, pyramidal and extrapyramidal syndromes, impairments in orientation, memory, language, attention, information processing and frontal executive functions, as well as personality changes and behavioural and psychiatric symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging usually reveals hippocampal and vermis atrophy, a cavum septum pellucidum, signs of diffuse axonal injury, pituitary gland atrophy, dilated perivascular spaces and periventricular white matter disease. Given the partial overlapping of the clinical expression, epidemiology and pathogenesis of CTE and Alzheimer's disease (AD), as well as the close association between traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and neurofibrillary tangle formation, a mixed pathology promoted by pathogenetic cascades resulting in either CTE or AD has been postulated. Molecular studies suggested that TBIs increase the neurotoxicity of the TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) that is a key pathological marker of ubiquitin-positive forms of frontotemporal dementia (FTLD-TDP) associated or not with motor neurone disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Similar patterns of immunoreactivity for TDP-43 in CTE, FTLD-TDP and ALS as well as epidemiological correlations support the presence of common pathogenetic mechanisms. The present review provides a critical update of the evolution of the concept of CTE with reference to its neuropathological definition together with an in-depth discussion of the differential diagnosis between this entity, AD and frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines surrounding maternal contact with the stillborn infant have been contradictory over the past thirty years. Most studies have reported that seeing and holding the stillborn baby is associated with fewer anxiety and depressive symptoms among mothers of stillborn babies than not doing so. In contrast, others studies suggest that contact with the stillborn infant can lead to poorer maternal mental health outcomes. There is a lack of research focusing on the maternal experience of this contact. The present study aimed to investigate how mothers describe their experience of spending time with their stillborn baby and how they felt retrospectively about the decision they made to see and hold their baby or not. METHOD: In depth interviews were conducted with twenty-one mothers three months after stillbirth. All mothers had decided to see and the majority to hold their baby. Qualitative analysis of the interview data was performed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. RESULTS: Six superordinate themes were identified: Characteristics of Contact, Physicality; Emotional Experience; Surreal Experience; Finality; and Decision. Having contact with their stillborn infant provided mothers with time to process what had happened, to build memories, and to 'say goodbye', often sharing the experience with partners and other family members. The majority of mothers felt satisfied with their decision to spend time with their stillborn baby. Several mothers talked about their fear of seeing a damaged or dead body. Some mothers experienced strong disbelief and dissociation during the contact. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that preparation before contact with the baby, professional support during the contact, and professional follow-up are crucial in order to prevent the development of maternal mental health problems. Fears of seeing a damaged or dead body should be sensitively explored and ways of coping discussed. Even in cases where mothers experienced intense distress during the contact with their stillborn baby, they still described that having had this contact was important and that they had taken the right decision. This indicates a need for giving parents an informed choice by engaging in discussions about the possible benefits and risks of seeing their stillborn baby.

Research on sexuality in Ghana has been scanty due to the nature of the Ghanaian society where sensitive issues like sexuality are not openly discussed and researched. This qualitative study examined how social contact with Canadian society has impacted the views of Ghanaian students living in Canada about sexuality. The data for this research study were gathered through in-depth interviews with 15 Ghanaian students between ages18 to 30 who had been living in Canada for more than one year. This study’s findings revealed that religion plays a central role in shaping views about sexuality among young Ghanaians living in Canada. The findings also highlighted the impact of cultural contact in shaping several aspects of sexuality including contraception and same-sex relations. The theoretical implications of this study’s results are discussed in terms of how they can help to clarify culturally informed models focusing on the role played by society, religion, family and peers in the development of adolescent perspectives about sexuality. The practical and educational implications of this study’s results are also discussed.

This paper provides evidence for the claim made in Baetens Beardsmore (1971) that the grammatical collocation "chercher après" «to look for», which is very frequent in Brussels French, is the result of transfer from the contact language, Brussels Dutch. A detailed quantitative analysis of this construction in different varieties of French which have more or less contact with a Germanic language was made to investigate the likelihood of influence from the Germanic substrate. The differences between the meaning of "chercher" and "chercher après" are also analysed in some depth, to find out whether or not the particle is redundant. According to Trudgill (2004) redundant constructions are more often found in contact situations involving long-term, stable contact and child bilingualism. The particle "après" was found to add a particular shade of meaning to "chercher", and is thus not redundant. Therefore no evidence could be obtained from the current data for Trudgill’s (2004) claim.

Among the factors that contribute to the papilla formation and crestal bone preservation between contiguous implants, this animal study clinically and radiographically evaluated the interimplant distances (IDs) of 2 and 3 mm and the placement depths of Morse cone connection implants restored with platform switch. Bilateral mandibular premolars of 6 dogs were extracted, and after 12 weeks, the implants were placed. Four experimental groups were constituted: subcrestally with ID of 2 mm (2 SCL) and 3 mm (3 SCL) and crestally with ID of 2 mm (2 CL) and 3 mm (3 CL). Metallic crowns were immediately installed with a distance of 3 mm between the contact point and the bone crest. Eight weeks later, clinical measurements were performed to evaluate papilla formation, and radiographic images were taken to analyze the crestal bone remodeling. The subcrestal groups achieved better levels of papillae formation when compared with the crestal groups, with a significant difference between the 3 SCL and 3 CL groups (P = .026). Radiographically, the crestal bone preservation was also better in the subcrestal groups, with statistically significant differences between the 2SCL and 2CL groups (P = .002) and between the 3SCL and 3CL groups (P = .008). With the present conditions, it could be concluded that subcrestal implant placement had a positive impact on papilla formation and crestal bone preservation, which could favor the esthetic of anterior regions. However, the IDs of 2 and 3 mm did not show significantly different results.

In this work, we study the effect of doping depth profile on the photocatalytic and surface properties of TiO(2) films. Two thin film layers of TiO(2) (200 nm) and Co (5 nm), respectively, were deposited by physical evaporation on glass substrate. These films were annealed for 1 s at 100 and 400 A degrees C and the Co layer was removed by chemical etching. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) phase images showed changes in the surface in function of thermal treatment. The grazing-incidence X-ray fluorescence (GIXRF) measurements indicated that the thermal treatment caused migration of Co atoms to below the surface, the depths found were between 19 and 29 nm. The contact angle showed distinct values in function of the doped profile or Co surface concentration. The UV-vis spectra presented a red shift with the increasing of thermal treatment. Photocatalytical assays were performed by methylene blue discoloration and the higher activity was found for TiO(2)-Co treated at 400 A degrees C, the ESI-MS showed the fragments formed during the methylene blue decomposition.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the stress distribution on dentin/adhesive interface (d/a) through a 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) varying the number and diameter of the dentin tubules orifice according to dentin depth, keeping hybrid layer (HL) thickness and TAǴs length constant. Materials and Methods: 3 models were built through the SolidWorks software: SD - specimen simulating superficial dentin (41 x 41 x 82 μm), with a 3 μm thick HL, a 17 μm length Tag, and 8 tubules with a 0.9 μm diameter restored with composite resin. MD - similar to M1 with 12 tubules with a 1.2 μm diameter, simulating medium dentin. DD - similar to M1 with 16 tubules with a 2.5 μm diameter, simulating deep dentin. Other two models were built in order to keep the diameter constant in 2.5 μm: MS - similar to SD with 8 tubules; and MM - similar to MD with 12 tubules. The boundary condition was applied to the base surface of each specimen. Tensile load (0.03N) was performed on the composite resin top surface. Stress field (maximum principal stress in tension - σMAX) was performed using Ansys Wokbench 10.0. Results: The peak of σMAX (MPa) were similar between SD (110) and MD (106), and higher for DD (134). The stress distribution pathway was similar for all models, starting from peritubular dentin to adhesive layer, intertubular dentin and hybrid layer. The peak of σMAX (MPa) for those structures was, respectively: 134 (DD), 56.9 (SD), 45.5 (DD), and 36.7 (MD). Conclusions: The number of dentin tubules had no influence in the σMAX at the dentin/adhesive interface. Peritubular and intertubular dentin showed higher stress with the bigger dentin tubules orifice condition. The σMAX in the hybrid layer and adhesive layer were going down from superficial dentin to deeper dentin. In a failure scenario, the hybrid layer in contact with peritubular dentin and adhesive layer is the first region for breaking the adhesion. © 2011 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

In contact shots, all the materials emerging from the muzzle (combustion gases, soot, powder grains, and metals from the primer) will be driven into the depth of the entrance wound and the following sections of the bullet track. The so-called "pocket" ("powder cavity") under the skin containing soot and gunpowder particles is regarded as a significant indicator of a contact entrance wound since one would expect that the quantity of GSR deposited along the bullet's path rapidly declines towards the exit hole. Nevertheless, experience has shown that soot, powder particles, and carboxyhemoglobin may be found not only in the initial part of the wound channel, but also far away from the entrance and even at the exit. In order to investigate the propagation of GSRs under standardized conditions, contact test shots were fired against composite models of pig skin and 25-cm-long gelatin blocks using 9-mm Luger pistol cartridges with two different primers (Sinoxid® and Sintox®). Subsequently, 1-cm-thick layers of the gelatin blocks were examined as to their primer element contents (lead, barium, and antimony as discharge residues of Sinoxid® as well as zinc and titanium from Sintox®) by means of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. As expected, the highest element concentrations were found in the initial parts of the bullet tracks, but also the distal sections contained detectable amounts of the respective primer elements. The same was true for amorphous soot and unburned/partly burned powder particles, which could be demonstrated even at the exit site. With the help of a high-speed motion camera it was shown that for a short time the temporary cavitation extends from the entrance to the exit thus facilitating the unlimited spread of discharge residues along the whole bullet path.

BACKGROUND: Continual surveillance based on patch test results has proved useful for the identification of contact allergy. OBJECTIVES: To provide a current view on the spectrum of contact allergy to important sensitizers across Europe. PATIENTS/METHODS: Clinical and patch test data of 19 793 patients patch tested in 2005/2006 in the 31 participating departments from 10 European countries (the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies' (ESSCA) www.essca-dc.org) were descriptively analysed, aggregated to four European regions. RESULTS: Nickel sulfate remains the most common allergen with standardized prevalences ranging from 19.7% (central Europe) to 24.4% (southern Europe). While a number of allergens shows limited variation across the four regions, such as Myroxylon pereirae (5.3-6.8%), cobalt chloride (6.2-8.8%) or thiuram mix (1.7-2.4%), the differences observed with other allergens may hint on underlying differences in exposures, for example: dichromate 2.4% in the UK (west) versus 4.5-5.9% in the remaining EU regions, methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone 4.1% in the South versus 2.1-2.7% in the remaining regions. CONCLUSIONS: Notwithstanding residual methodological variation (affecting at least some 'difficult' allergens) tackled by ongoing efforts for standardization, a comparative analysis as presented provides (i) a broad overview on contact allergy frequencies and (ii) interesting starting points for further, in-depth investigation.

The purpose of this study is to determine the critical wear levels of the contact wire of the catenary on metropolitan lines. The study has focussed on the zones of contact wire where localised wear is produced, normally associated with the appearance of electric arcs. To this end, a finite element model has been developed to study the dynamics of pantograph-catenary interaction. The model includes a zone of localised wear and a singularity in the contact wire in order to simulate the worst case scenario from the point of view of stresses. In order to consider the different stages in the wire wear process, different depths and widths of the localised wear zone were defined. The results of the dynamic simulations performed for each stage of wear let the area of the minimum resistant section of the contact wire be determined for which stresses are greater than the allowable stress. The maximum tensile stress reached in the contact wire shows a clear sensitivity to the size of the local wear zone, defined by its width and depth. In this way, if the wear measurements taken with an overhead line recording vehicle are analysed, it will be possible to calculate the potential breakage risk of the wire. A strong dependence of the tensile forces of the contact wire has also been observed. These results will allow priorities to be set for replacing the most critical sections of wire, thereby making maintenance much more efficient. The results obtained show that the wire replacement criteria currently borne in mind have turned out to be appropriate, although in some wear scenarios these criteria could be adjusted even more, and so prolong the life cycle of the contact wire.
