Redundant manipulators have some advantages when compared with classical arms because they allow the trajectory optimization, both on the free space and on the presence of abstacles, and the resolution of singularities. For this type of manipulators, several kinetic algorithms adopt generalized inverse matrices. In this line of thought, the generalized inverse control scheme is tested through several experiments that reveal the difficulties that often arise. Motivated by theseproblems this paper presents a new method that ptimizes the manipulability through a least squre polynomialapproximation to determine the joints positions. Moreover, the article studies influence on the dynamics, when controlling redundant and hyper-redundant manipulators. The experiment confirm the superior performance of the proposed algorithm for redundant and hyper-redundant manipulators, revealing several fundamental properties of the chaotic phenomena, and gives a deeper insight towards the future development of superior trajectory control algorithms.

Since its discovery, chaos has been a very interesting and challenging topic of research. Many great minds spent their entire lives trying to give some rules to it. Nowadays, thanks to the research of last century and the advent of computers, it is possible to predict chaotic phenomena of nature for a certain limited amount of time. The aim of this study is to present a recently discovered method for the parameter estimation of the chaotic dynamical system models via the correlation integral likelihood, and give some hints for a more optimized use of it, together with a possible application to the industry. The main part of our study concerned two chaotic attractors whose general behaviour is diff erent, in order to capture eventual di fferences in the results. In the various simulations that we performed, the initial conditions have been changed in a quite exhaustive way. The results obtained show that, under certain conditions, this method works very well in all the case. In particular, it came out that the most important aspect is to be very careful while creating the training set and the empirical likelihood, since a lack of information in this part of the procedure leads to low quality results.

Redundant manipulators allow the trajectory optimization, the obstacle avoidance, and the resolution of singularities. For this type of manipulators, the kinematic control algorithms adopt generalized inverse matrices that may lead to unpredictable responses. Motivated by these problems this paper studies the complexity revealed by the trajectory planning scheme when controlling redundant manipulators. The results reveal fundamental properties of the chaotic phenomena and give a deeper insight towards the development of superior trajectory control algorithms.

Under the pseudoinverse control, robots with kinematical redundancy exhibit an undesirable chaotic joint motion which leads to an erratic behavior. This paper studies the complexity of fractional dynamics of the chaotic response. Fourier and wavelet analysis provides a deeper insight, helpful to know better the lack of repeatability problem of redundant manipulators. This perspective for the study of the chaotic phenomena will permit the development of superior trajectory control algorithms.

This is a sequel to our earlier work on the modulated logistic map. Here, we first show that the map comes under the universality class of Feigenbaum. We then give evidence for the fact that our model can generate strange attractors in the unit square for an uncountable number of parameter values in the range μ∞<μ<1. Numerical plots of the attractor for several values of μ are given and the self-similar structure is explicity shown in one case. The fractal and information dimensions of the attractors for many values of μ are shown to be greater than one and the variation in their structure is analysed using the two Lyapunov exponents of the system. Our results suggest that the map can be considered as an analogue of the logistic map in two dimensions and may be useful in describing certain higher dimensional chaotic phenomena.

Chaotic systems, when used to drive copies of themselves (or parts of themselves) may induce interesting behaviors in the driven system. In case the later exhibits invariance under amplification or translation, they may show amplification (reduction), or displacement of the attractor. It is shown how the behavior to be obtained is implied by the symmetries involved. Two explicit examples are studied to show how these phenomena manifest themselves under perfect and imperfect coupling.

In this work, we use a nonlinear control based on Optimal Linear Control. We used as mathematical model a Duffing equation to model a supporting structure for an unbalanced rotating machine with limited power (non-ideal motor). Numerical simulations are performed for a set control parameter (depending on the voltage of the motor, that is, in the static and dynamic characteristic of the motor) The interaction of the non-ideal excitation with the structure may lead to the occurrence of interesting phenomena during the forward passage through the several resonance states of the system. Chaotic behavior is obtained for values of the parameters. Then, the proposed control strategy is applied in order to regulate the chaotic behavior, in order to obtain a periodic orbit and to decrease its amplitude. Both methodologies were used in complete agreement between them. The purpose of the paper is to give suggestions and recommendations to designers and engineers on how to drive this kind of system through resonance.

In this work we apply a nonperturbative approach to analyze soliton bifurcation ill the presence of surface tension, which is a reformulation of standard methods based on the reversibility properties of the system. The hypothesis is non-restrictive and the results can be extended to a much wider variety of systems. The usual idea of tracking intersections of unstable manifolds with some invariant set is again used, but reversibility plays an important role establishing in a geometrical point of view some kind of symmetry which, in a classical way, is unknown or nonexistent. Using a computer program we determine soliton solutions and also their bifurcations ill the space of parameters giving a picture of the chaotic structural distribution to phase and amplitude shift phenomena. Nonideal systems are those in which one takes account of the influence of the oscillatory system on the energy supply with a limited power (Kononenko, 1969). In this paper, a particular nonideal system is investigated, consisting of a pendulum whose support point is vibrated along a horizontal guide by a two bar linkage driven by a DC motor, considered to be a limited power supply. Under these conditions, the oscillations of the pendulum are analyzed through the variation of a control parameter. The voltage supply of the motor is considered to be a reliable control parameter. Each simulation starts from zero speed and reaches a steady-state condition when the motor oscillates around a medium speed. Near the fundamental resonance region, the system presents some interesting nonlinear phenomena, including multi-periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic motion. The loss of stability of the system occurs through a saddle-node bifurcation, where there is a collision of a stable orbit with an unstable one, which is approximately located close to the value of the pendulum's angular displacement given by alpha (C)= pi /2. The aims of this study are to better understand nonideal systems using numerical simulation, to identify the bifurcations that occur in the system, and to report the existence of a chaotic attractor near the fundamental resonance. The cooperative motion algorithm was applied on the molecular simulation of complex chemical reactions and macromolecular orientation phenomena in confined geometries. First, we investigated the case of equilibrium step-growth polymerization in lamellae, pores and droplets. In such systems, confinement was quantified as the area/volume ratio. Results showed that, as confinement increases, polymerization becomes slower and the average molecular weight (MW) at equilibrium decreases. This is caused by the sterical hindrance imposed by the walls since chain growth reactions in their close vicinity have less realization possibilities. For reactions inside droplets at surfaces, contact angles usually increased after polymerization to compensate conformation restrictions imposed by confinement upon growing chains. In a second investigation, we considered monodisperse and chemically inert chains and focused on the effect of confinement on chain orientation. Simulations of thin polymer films showed that chains are preferably oriented parallel to the surface. Orientation increases as MW increases or as film thickness d decreases, in qualitative agreement with experiments with low MW polystyrene. It is demonstrated that the orientation of simulated chains results from a size effect, being a function of the ratio between chain end-to-end distance and d. This study was complemented by experiments with thin films of pi-conjugated polymers like MEH-PPV. Anisotropic refractive index measurements were used to analyze chain orientation. With increasing MW, orientation is enhanced. However, for MEH-PPV, orientation does not depend on d even at thicknesses much larger than the chain contour length. This contradiction with simulations was discussed by considering additional causes for orientation, for instance the appearance of nematic-like ordering in polymer films. In another investigation, we simulated droplet evaporation at soluble surfaces and reproduced the formation of wells surrounded by ringlike deposits at the surface, as observed experimentally. In our simulations, swollen substrate particles migrate to the border of the droplet to minimize the contact between solvent and vacuum, which costs the most energy. Deposit formation in the beginning of evaporation results in pinning of the droplet. When polymer chains at the substrate surface have strong uniaxial orientation, the resulting pattern is no longer similar to a ring but to a pair of half-moons. In a final stage, as an extension for the model developed for polymerization in nanoreactors, we studied the effect of geometrical confinement on a hypothetical oscillating reaction following the mechanism of the so called periodically forced Brusselator. It was shown that a reaction which is chaotic in the bulk may be driven to periodicity by confinement and vice-versa, opening new perspectives for chaos control.

This work presents the analysis of nonlinear aeroelastic time series from wing vibrations due to airflow separation during wind tunnel experiments. Surrogate data method is used to justify the application of nonlinear time series analysis to the aeroelastic system, after rejecting the chance for nonstationarity. The singular value decomposition (SVD) approach is used to reconstruct the state space, reducing noise from the aeroelastic time series. Direct analysis of reconstructed trajectories in the state space and the determination of Poincare sections have been employed to investigate complex dynamics and chaotic patterns. With the reconstructed state spaces, qualitative analyses may be done, and the attractors evolutions with parametric variation are presented. Overall results reveal complex system dynamics associated with highly separated flow effects together with nonlinear coupling between aeroelastic modes. Bifurcations to the nonlinear aeroelastic system are observed for two investigations, that is, considering oscillations-induced aeroelastic evolutions with varying freestream speed, and aeroelastic evolutions at constant freestream speed and varying oscillations. Finally, Lyapunov exponent calculation is proceeded in order to infer on chaotic behavior. Poincare mappings also suggest bifurcations and chaos, reinforced by the attainment of maximum positive Lyapunov exponents. Copyright (C) 2009 F. D. Marques and R. M. G. Vasconcellos.
