A novel europium(III) coordination polymer with a new double betaine derivative, {[Eu(L')(NO3)(H2O)(3)](NO3)(2). 3.5H(2)O}(n) (L-1 = 1,3-bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) has been synthesized and its structure determined. Its luminescence properties have also been studied. The title metal carboxylate coordination polymer contains centrosymmetric dimeric units in which each pair of metal ions is linked by a pair of syn-anti carboxylato-O,O' groups, and each pair of such dimeric units is bridged by the backbones of L-1 ligands to form infinite double chains in the b direction. These metal carboxylate chains are further cross-linked by hydrogen bonds among both coordinated and discrete nitrate anions, aqua ligands and lattice water molecules to form a three-dimensional network. Luminescent data show that the L-1 ligand is a good energy donor and the complex has a relatively long luminescent lifetime.

The reaction of lanthanoid chlorides or nitrates with sodium 3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)propionate (Na4hpp) in methanol or water has yielded complexes [La4(4hpp)12(H2O)6]·4H2O·MeOH (1), [Ce2(4hpp)6(H2O)3]·(H2O)·2.5(EtOH) (2a) (after crystallization from ethanol), [Ho(4hpp)3(H2O)2] (5), [Er(4hpp)3(H2O)2]·1.5(H2O) (6), and [Lu(4hpp)3]·H2O crystal composition (7), as well as heterobimetallics [NaCe2(4hpp)7(H2O)2]·3(H2O) (2b), [NaPr2(4hpp)7(H2O)2]·3(H2O) (3), and [NaNd2(4hpp)7(H2O)(MeOH)]·(H2O)·3(MeOH) (4). The structures of homometallic complexes 1, 2a, 6, and 7 reveal one-dimensional coordination polymers and vividly illustrate the effect of lanthanoid contraction with a decline in coordination numbers in the series from 9-11 (1), 9,10 (2a), 8 (6) to 7 (7) through variations in carboxylate coordination and ligation of water. Bimetallic complexes 2a and 4 each exhibit five different carboxylate binding modes as well as coordination of the 4-OH substituent of 4hpp to sodium thereby linking 1D polymer chains into a 2D network with both 9 and 10 coordinate Ln atoms and 6 coordinate sodium. Bulk products after drying lose solvent of crystallization in some cases (2a, 6), or exchange MeOH for water (4). X-ray powder diffraction indicates that bulk 2b and 3 are isotypic, as are bulk 5 and 6. In contrast to the excellent corrosion protection of lanthanum 4-hydroxycinnamate, compound 1 is ineffective in preventing the corrosion of mild steel, thereby establishing the importance of the -CHCH- structural unit of the former in its anti-corrosion properties. However the flexible -CH2-CH2- chain of the 4hpp ligand enables the crystal engineering of its lanthanoid complexes in a wide variety of structures as well as effective crystallization for structure determination, whereas the analogous 4-hydroxycinnamates have so far evaded structural characterization except for Ln = La, Ce owing to crystallization problems.

Three new linear trinuclear nickel(II) complexes, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (1) (OAc = acetate, CH3COO-), [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OBz)(2)] (2) (OBz=benzoate, PhCOO-) and [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OCn)(2)(CH3CN)(2)] (4) (OCn = cinnamate, PhCH=CHCOO-), H(2)salpen = tetradentate ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The choice of solvent for growing single crystal was made by inspecting the morphology of the initially obtained solids with the help of SEM study. The magnetic properties of a closely related complex, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OPh)(2)(EtOH)] (3) (OPh = phenyl acetate, PhCH2COO-) whose structure and solution properties have been reported recently, has also been studied here. The structural analyses reveal that both phenoxo and carboxylate bridging are present in all the complexes and the three Ni(II) atoms remain in linear disposition. Although the Schiff base ligand and the syn-syn bridging bidentate mode of the carboxylate group remain the same in complexes 1-4, the change of alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylates brings about systematic variations between six- and five-coordination in the geometry of the terminal Ni(II) centres of the trinuclear units. The steric demand as well as hydrophobic nature of the alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylate is found to play a crucial role in the tuning of the geometry. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complexes 1-4 are antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.2(1), -4.6(1). -3.2(1) and -2.8(1) cm(-1) in 1-4, respectively). Calculations of the zero-field splitting parameter indicate that the values of D for complexes 1-4 are in the high range (D = +9.1(2), +14.2(2), +9.8(2) and +8.6(1) cm(-1) for 1-4, respectively). The highest D value of +14.2(2) and +9.8(2) cm(-1) for complexes 2 and 3, respectively, are consistent with the pentacoordinated geometry of the two terminal nickel(II) ions in 2 and one terminal nickel(II) ion in 3. The structures of the hydrated sodium salts of 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid {poly[aqua(μ4-4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoato)sodium(I)], [Na(C7H3ClNO4)(H2O)]n, (I)} and 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid {poly[μ-aqua-aqua(μ3-2-amino-4-nitrobenzoato)sodium(I)], [Na(C7H5N2O4)(H2O)2]n, (II)}, and the hydrated potassium salt of 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid {poly[μ-aqua-aqua(μ5-2-amino-4-nitrobenzoato)potassium(I)], [K(C7H5N2O4)(H2O)]n, (III)} have been determined and their complex polymeric structures described. All three structures are stabilized by intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding and strong π–π ring interactions. In the structure of (I), the distorted trigonal bipyrimidal NaO5 coordination polyhedron comprises a monodentate water molecule and four bridging carboxylate O-atom donors, generating a two-dimensional polymeric structure lying parallel to (001). Intra-layer hydrogen-bonding associations and strong inter-ring π–π interactions are present. Structure (II) has a distorted octahedral NaO6 stereochemistry, with four bridging O-atom donors, two from a single carboxylate group and two from a single nitro group and three from the two water molecules, one of which is bridging. Na centres are linked through centrosymmetric four-membered duplex water bridges and through 18-membered duplex head-to-tail ligand bridges. Similar centrosymmetric bridges are found in the structure of (III), and in both (II) and (III) strong inter-ring π–π interactions are found. A two-dimensional layered structure lying parallel to (010) is generated in (II), whereas in (III) the structure is three-dimensional. With (III), the irregular KO7 coordination polyhedron comprises a doubly bridging water molecule, a single bidentate bridging carboxylate O-atom donor and three bridging O-atom donors from the two nitro groups. A three-dimensional structure is generated. These coordination polymer structures are among the few examples of metal complexes of any type with either 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid or 4-nitroanthranilic acid.

The two-dimensional coordination polymeric structures of the hydrated potassium and rubidium salts of (3,5-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid, (3,5-D) namely, poly[mu-aqua-bis[mu3-2-(3,5-dichlorophenoxy)acetato]potassium, [K2(C8H5Cl2O3)2 (H2O)]n (I) and poly[mu-aqua-bis[mu3-2-(3,5-dichlorophenoxy)acetato]dirubidium] [Rb2(C8H5Cl2O3)2 (H2O)]n (II), respectively have been determined and are described. The two compounds are isotypic and the polymer is based on centrosymmetric dinuclear bridged complex units. The irregular six-coordination about the metal centres comprises a bridging water molecule lying on a twofold rotation axis, the phenoxy O-atom donor and and a triple bridging carboxylate O-atom of the oxoacetate side chain of the 3,5-D ligand in a bidentate chelate mode, the second carboxy O-donor, also bridging. The K-O and Rb-O bond-length ranges are 2.7238(15)--2.9459(14) and 2.832(2)--3.050(2) \%A respectively and the K...K and Rb...Rb separations in the dinuclear unit are 4.0214(7) and 4.1289(6) \%A, respectively. Within the two-dimensional layers which lie parallel to (100), the coordinated water molecule forms an O---H...O hydrogen bond to the single bridging carboxylate O atom.

The two-dimensional polymeric structures of the caesium complexes with the phenoxyacetic acid analogues (4-fluorophenoxy)acetic acid, (3-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid and the herbicidally active (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D), namely poly[[5-(4-fluorophenoxy)acetato][4-(4-fluorophenoxy)acetato]dicaesium], [Cs2(C8H6FO3)2]n, (I), poly[aqua[5-(3-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetato]caesium], [Cs(C9H8ClO3)(H2O)]n, (II), and poly[[7-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetato][(2,4-dichlorphenoxy)acetic acid]caesium], [Cs(C8H5Cl2O3)(C8H6Cl2O3)]n, (III), are described. In (I), the Cs+ cations of the two individual irregular coordination polyhedra in the asymmetric unit (one CsO7 and the other CsO8) are linked by bridging carboxylate O-atom donors from the two ligand molecules, both of which are involved in bidentate chelate Ocarboxy,Ophenoxy interactions, while only one has a bidentate carboxylate O,O'-chelate interaction. Polymeric extension is achieved through a number of carboxylate O-atom bridges, with a minimum CsCs separation of 4.3231 (9) Å, giving layers which lie parallel to (001). In hydrated complex (II), the irregular nine-coordination about the Cs+ cation comprises a single monodentate water molecule, a bidentate Ocarboxy,Ophenoxy chelate interaction and six bridging carboxylate O-atom bonding interactions, giving a CsCs separation of 4.2473 (3) Å. The water molecule forms intralayer hydrogen bonds within the two-dimensional layers, which lie parallel to (100). In complex (III), the irregular centrosymmetric CsO6Cl2 coordination environment comprises two O-atom donors and two ring-substituted Cl-atom donors from two hydrogen bis[(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetate] ligand species in a bidentate chelate mode, and four O-atom donors from bridging carboxyl groups. The duplex ligand species lie across crystallographic inversion centres, linked through a short O-HO hydrogen bond involving the single acid H atom. Structure extension gives layers which lie parallel to (001). The present set of structures of Cs salts of phenoxyacetic acids show previously demonstrated trends among the alkali metal salts of simple benzoic acids with no stereochemically favourable interactive substituent groups for formation of two-dimensional coordination polymers.

The hydrothermal reaction of Ln(NO3)(3), Ni(NO3)(2), NaN3, and isonicotinic acid (L) yielded two novel 3-D coordination frameworks (1 and 2) of general formula [Ni(2)Ln(L)(5)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(3)] center dot 2H(2)O (Ln = Pr(III) for 1 and Nd(III) for 2), containing Ni-Pr or Ni-Nd hybrid extended three-dimensional networks containing both azido and carboxylate as co-ligands. Both the compounds are found to be isostructural and crystallize in monoclinic system having P2(1)/n space group. Here the lanthanide ions are found to be nonacoordinated. Both bidentate and monodentate modes of binding of the carboxylate with the lanthanides have been observed in the above complexes. Variable temperature magnetic studies of the above two complexes have been investigated in the temperature range 2-300 K which showed dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in both the cases and these experimental results are analyzed with the theoretical models. A new two-dimensional 3d-4f mixed-metal mixed dicarboxylate (homocyclic and heterocyclic) of the formula [Gd2(H2O)2Ni(H2O)2(1,2-bdc)2(2,5-pydc)2] 3 8H2O (1; 1,2-H2bdc = 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid and 2,5-H2pydc = 2,5- pyridinedicarboxylic acid) has been prepared by employing the hydrothermal method. The structure has infinite onedimensional-Gd-O-Gd- chains formed by the edge-shared GdO9 polyhedral units, resulting exclusively from the connectivity between the Gd3+ ions and the 1,2-bdc units. The chains are connected by the [Ni(H2O)2(2,5-pydc)2]2- metalloligand, forming the two-dimensional layer arrangements. The stacking of the layers creates hydrophilic and hydrophobic spaces in the interlamellar region. A one-dimensional water ladder structure, formed by the extraframework water molecules, occupies the hydrophilic region while the benzene ring of 1,2-bdc occupies the hydrophobic region. To the best of our knowledge, the present compound represents the first example of a 3d-4f mixed-metal carboxylate in which two different aromatic dicarboxylate anions act as the linkers. The stabilization energies of the water clusters have been evaluated using density functional theory calculations. The water molecules in 1 are fully reversible accompanied by a change in color (greenish blue to brown) and coordination around Ni2+ ions (octahedral to distorted tetrahedral).

Three distinct coordination complexes, viz., [Co(imi)(2)(tmb)(2)] (1) [where imi = imidazole], {[Ni(tmb)(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (2) and [Cu-2(mu-tmb)(4)(CH3OH)(2)] (3), have been synthesized hydrothermally by the reactions of metal acetates,2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic acid (Htmb) and with or without appropriate amine. The Ni analogue of 1 and the Co analogue of 2 have also been synthesized. X-ray single-crystal diffraction suggests that complex 1 represents discrete mononuclear species and complex 2 represents a 1D chain coordination polymer in which the Ni(H) ions are connected by the bridging water molecules. Complex 3 represents a neutral dinuclear complex. In 1, the central metal ions are associated by the carboxylate moiety and imidazole ligands, whereas the central metal atom is coordinated to the carboxylate moiety and the respective solvent molecules in 2 and 3. In 3, the four 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoate moieties act as a bridge connecting two copper (11) ions and the 0 atoms of methanol coord geometry, with the methanol molecule at the apical position. In all the three structures the central metal atom sits on a crystallographic inversion centre. In all the cases, the coordination entities are further organized via hydrogen bonding interactions to generate multifarious supramolecular networks. Complexes 1, 2 and 3 have also been characterized by spectroscopic (UV/Vis and IR) and thermal analysis (TGA). In addition, the complexes were found to exhibit antimicrobial activity. The magnetic susceptibility measurements, measured from 8 to 300 K, revealed antiferromagnetic interactions between the Co(II) ions in compound 1 and the Ni(II) ions in la, respectively.

Two coordination polymers [Ni(ipt)(dap)(2)](n) (1) and [Cu(ipt)(dap)H2O](n) center dot nH(2)O (2) with an overall one-dimensional arrangement and having isophthalate (ipt) as bridging moieties and chelating 1,3-diaminopropane (dap) as structure modulating units have been prepared and characterized by crystallographic, spectroscopic and thermo-analytical studies. Both have an overall one-dimensional zig-zag nature but with a distorted octahedral NiN4O2 chromophore for 1 and a distorted square pyramidal CuN2O3 chromophore for 2. Even though the ipt units are acting as bridging units through mono-dentatively coordinating carboxylate functions in both polymers, compound 1 has the carboxylate oxygen linkages at the trans positions, while in 2 the oxygen linkages occur at the cis positions leading to a different type of zig-zag arrangement. Relevant spectral and bonding parameters also could be evaluated for the compounds using UV-Vis and EPR spectra. Thermal stability and possible structural modifications on thermal treatment of the compounds were also investigated and the relevant thermodynamic and kinetic parameters evaluated from the thermal data. Lanthanide coordination polymers of the general formula Ln(2)(L)(5)(NO3)(H2O)(4)](n) (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3)) supported by a novel aromatic carboxylate ligand 4-((1H-benzod]imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzoic acid (HL) have been synthesized, characterized, and their photoluminescence behavior is examined. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns of complexes 1-3 showed that 1-3 are isostructural; thus, 1 has been chosen as an example to discuss in detail about the molecular structure by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 is a one-dimensional (1D) helical chain-like coordination polymer consisting of unique unsymmetrical dinuclear lanthanide building blocks. The 1D chains are further linked by the significant intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions to form a two-dimensional supramolecular network. The Tb3+ complex exhibits bright green luminescence efficiency in the solid state with a quantum yield of 15%. On the other hand, poor luminescence efficiency has been noted for Eu3+-benzoate complex.
