Electrical resistivity, transverse magnetoresistance and thermoelectric power measurements were performed on CuS high quality single crystals in the range 1.2-300 K and under fields of up to 16 T. The zero field resistivity data are well described below 55 K by a quasi-2D model, consistent with a carrier confinement at lower temperatures, before the transition to the superconducting state. The transverse magnetoresistance develops mainly below 30 K and attains values as large as 470% for a 16 T field at 5 K, this behaviour being ascribed to a band effect mechanism, with a possible magnetic field induced DOS change at the Fermi level. The transverse magnetoresistance shows no signs of saturation, following a power law with field Delta rho/rho(0) proportional to H(1.4), suggesting the existence of open orbits for carriers at the Fermi surface. The thermoelectric power shows an unusual temperature dependence, probably as a result of the complex band structure of CuS.

Nos relatos de naufrágios, o Mar e a Terra, com a respectiva fauna e flora, são espaços privilegiados da aventura exótica, proporcionando a abertura de novos horizontes geo-culturais que exigem uma reflexão sobre o essencial da condição humana, no binômio polarizador da imanência e da transcendência, do profano e do sagrado, do tempo e da eternidade. De 1552 a 1602, os doze relatos que constituem o corpus textual da História Trágico-Marítitna desenham, no período cronológico de meio século, o espaço planetário de meio mundo, da Europa à Ásia, passando por África, América e Oceania, num percurso incessante, rico de informações e vivências. Integrando-se na tradição portuguesa da pesquisa oceânica e continental que entronca na iniciativa expansionista do primeiro monarca da Dinastia de Avis, a tomada de Ceuta, em 1415, as Relações de viagens continuam, em pleno quinhentismo, a sulcar mares incógnitos e a desvendar novos mundos ao Mundo.

Among the copper sulphides, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S) are the most important source of minerals for copper mining industry. The acknowledge of behaviour of these sulphides related with bacterial leaching process are essential for optimization procedures. Despite of its importance, covellite has not deserved much interest of researchers regarding this matter. In this work it was studied the oxidation of covellite by the chemolithotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans by using electrochemical techniques, such as open circuit potentials with the time and cyclic voltammetry. The experiments were carried out in acid medium (pH 1.8), containing or not Fe2+ as additional energy source, and in different periods of incubation; chemical controls were run in parallel. The results showed that a sulphur layer is formed spontaneously due the acid attack, covering the sulphide in the initial phase of incubation, blocking the sulphide oxidation. However, the bacterium was capable to oxidize this sulphur layer. In the presence of Fe2+ as supplemental energy source, the corrosion process was facilitated, because ocurred an indirect oxidation of covellite by Fe3+, which was produced by T. ferrooxidans oxidation of the Fe2+ added in the medium.

This paper analyses the oxidation of covellite and molybdenite by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strain LR using respirometric experiments. The results showed that both sulfides were oxidized by A. ferrooxidans, however, the covellite oxidation was much higher than molybdenite. Regarding the kinetic oxidation, the findings revealed that just molybdenite oxidation followed the classical Michaelis-Menten kinetic. It is probably associated with the pathway which these sulfides react to chemistry-bacterial attack, what is influenced by its electronic structures. Besides, experiments conducted in the presence of Fe3+ did not indicate alterations in molybdenite oxidation. Thus, ferric ions seem not to be essential to the sulfide oxidations.

Poner en conocimiento de todos la experiencia de descubrir a D. Mariano Cusí y Soler, pedagogo y frenólogo que apoya todos sus principios educativos en una escuela psico-fisiológica que tuvo una gran importancia en el mundo intelectual del siglo XIX. Descubrir que dentro de este hombre se encuentra una vocación pedagógica de gran altura, aunque sus principios son pueriles, su espíritu de maestro y su prestación alcanzan dimensiones gigantescas. Exponer la personalidad de D. Mariano Cusí y Soler, pues, si dentro del campo de las grandes ideologías pedagógicas no tiene lugar su prestación y dedicación a la enseñanza le hacen merecedor de un gran respeto y una gran admiración. Así mismo, también, se pretende hacer una exposición muy elemental de lo que es la frenología para que pueda ser seguida de una manera más cómoda la línea que persigue este pensador. Mariano Cusí y Soler es un incansable educador, pues toda su vida estuvo dedicado en cuerpo y alma a la difusión de la frenología, asi como, a la enseñanza en general. La educación será para él la llave de la felicidad y la salvación del mundo, pues, sacará a los hombres de la ignorancia y les hará poseedores de la ciencia. Es un gran defensor de la higiene escolar y pide que la escuela tenga condiciones de salubridad. Defiende el método experimental pues nada queda mejor aprendido que aquello que se ha repetido varias veces. Es precursor de la orientación profesional, pues considera que es tarea del educador el descubrir las cualidades específicas de cada individuo y encuadrarlo dentro de la profesión que más beneficios pueda reportarle a él y a la sociedad. Entusiasta de la educación femenina, pues, ésta cuanta mayor educación adecuada reciba mejor se desenvuelve en la vida y mejor contribuirá a la educación de sus hijos y a la felicidad de su esposo.
