In order to overcome the large lattice mismatch in the heteroepitaxy, a new patterned compliant substrate method has been introduced, which has overcome the disadvantages of previously published methods. InP film of thickness 800 nm was directly grown on this substrate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has shown that good surface morphology has been obtained. In addition, Photoluminescence (PL) and double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXRD) study have shown that the residual strain has been reduced, and that the structure quality has been improved. The hydrogen-implanted Si substrate has been used for the fabrication of the "compliant substrate", which can accommodate the mismatch strain during the heteroepitaxy. The compliance of the substrate can be modulated by the energy and dose of implanted hydrogen. In addition, the defects caused by implantation act as the gettering center for the internal gettering of the harmful metallic impurities. Compared with SiC films growth on substrate without implantation. all the measurements indicated that the mismatch strains in the SiC films grown on this substrate have been released and the crystalline qualities have been improved. It is a practical technique used for the compliant substrate fabrication and compatible with the semiconductor industry. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thin GaAs/AlAs and GaAs/GaAs buffer layer structure have been fabricated on the GaAs(001) substrate. The top GaAs buffer layer is decoupled from the host substrate by introduction of a low temperature thin interlayer (AlAs or GaAs), which was mechanically behaved like the compliant substrate. Four hundred nanometer In0.25Ga0.75As films were grown on these substrates and the traditional substrate directly. Photoluminescence (PL), double-crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were used to estimate the quality of the In0.25Ga0.75As layer and the compliant effects of the low temperature buffer layer. All the measurements shown that the qualities of epilayer have been improved and the substrate have been deteriorated severely. The growth technique of the thin GaAs/AlAs structure was found to be simple but very powerful for heteroepitaxy. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V All rights reserved.

Numerous experimental studies have established that cells can sense the stiffness of underlying substrates and have quantified the effect of substrate stiffness on stress fibre formation, focal adhesion area, cell traction, and cell shape. In order to capture such behaviour, the current study couples a mixed mode thermodynamic and mechanical framework that predicts focal adhesion formation and growth with a material model that predicts stress fibre formation, contractility, and dissociation in a fully 3D implementation. Simulations reveal that SF contractility plays a critical role in the substrate-dependent response of cells. Compliant substrates do not provide sufficient tension for stress fibre persistence, causing dissociation of stress fibres and lower focal adhesion formation. In contrast, cells on stiffer substrates are predicted to contain large amounts of dominant stress fibres. Different levels of cellular contractility representative of different cell phenotypes are found to alter the range of substrate stiffness that cause the most significant changes in stress fibre and focal adhesion formation. Furthermore, stress fibre and focal adhesion formation evolve as a cell spreads on a substrate and leading to the formation of bands of fibres leading from the cell periphery over the nucleus. Inhibiting the formation of FAs during cell spreading is found to limit stress fibre formation. The predictions of this mutually dependent material-interface framework are strongly supported by experimental observations of cells adhered to elastic substrates and offer insight into the inter-dependent biomechanical processes regulating stress fibre and focal adhesion formation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A new method is demonstrated to be effective in reducing mismatch-induced tensile stress and suppressing the formation of cracks by inserting InAlGaN interlayers during the growth of GaN upon Si (1 1 1) substrate. Compared with GaN film without quaternary interlayer, GaN layer grown on InAlGaN compliant layers shows a five times brighter integrated PL intensity and a (0 0 0 2) High-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) curve width of 18 arcmin. Its chi(min), derived from Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), is about 2.0%, which means that the crystalline quality of this layer is very good. Quaternary InAlGaN layers, which are used as buffer layers firstly, can play a compliant role to endure the large mismatch-induced stress and reduce cracks during the growth of GaN epitaxy. The mechanisms leading to crack density reduction are investigated and results show that the phase immiscibility and the weak In-N bond make interlayer to offer tenability in the lattice parameters and release the thermal stress. Various low-temperature (LT) ultra-thin buffer layers have been fabricated on the GaAs (001) substrate. The buffer layer is decoupled from the host substrate by introducing low-temperature defects. The 400 nm In0.25Ga0.75As films were grown on these substrates to test the 'compliant' effects of the buffer layers. Atomic force microscopy, photoluminescence, double crystal x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to estimate the quality of the ln(0.25)Ga(0.75)As layer. The measurements indicated that the misfit strains in the epilayer can be accommodated by the LT ultra-thin buffer layer. The strain accommodation effects of the LT defects have been discussed in detail.

Wurtzite GaN films have been grown on (001) Si substrates using gamma-Al2O3 as an intermediate layer by low pressure (similar to 76 Torr) metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Reflection high energy electron diffraction and double crystal x-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the thin gamma-Al2O3 layer of "compliant" character was an effective intermediate layer for the GaN film grown epitaxially on Si. The narrowest linewidth of the x-ray rocking curve for (0002) diffraction of the 1.3 mu m GaN sample was 54 arcmin. The orientation relationship of GaN/gamma-Al2O3/Si was (0001) GaN parallel to(001) gamma-Al2O3 parallel to(001) Si, [11-20] GaN parallel to[110] gamma-Al2O3 parallel to[110] Si. The photoluminescence measurement for GaN at room temperature exhibited a near band-edge peak of 365 nm (3.4 eV). (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.

This paper proposes a substrate integrated waveguide
(SIW) cavity-based method that is compliant with
ground-signal–ground (GSG) probing technology for dielectric
characterization of printed circuit board materials at millimeter
wavelengths. This paper presents the theory necessary to retrieve
dielectric parameters from the resonant characteristics of SIW
cavities with particular attention placed on the coupling scheme
and means for obtaining the unloaded resonant frequency. Different
sets of samples are designed and measured to address the
influence of the manufacturing process on the method. Material
parameters are extracted at - and -band from measured data
with the effect of surface roughness of the circuit metallization
taken into account.

We have fabricated a compliant neural interface to record afferent nerve activity. Stretchable gold electrodes were evaporated on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate and were encapsulated using photo-patternable PDMS. The built-in microstructure of the gold film on PDMS allows the electrodes to twist and flex repeatedly, without loss of electrical conductivity. PDMS microchannels (5mm long, 100μm wide, 100μm deep) were then plasma bonded irreversibly on top of the electrode array to define five parallel-conduit implants. The soft gold microelectrodes have a low impedance of ~200kΩ at the 1kHz frequency range. Teased nerves from the L6 dorsal root of an anaesthetized Sprague Dawley rat were threaded through the microchannels. Acute tripolar recordings of cutaneous activity are demonstrated, from multiple nerve rootlets simultaneously. Confinement of the axons within narrow microchannels allows for reliable recordings of low amplitude afferents. This electrode technology promises exciting applications in neuroprosthetic devices including bladder fullness monitors and peripheral nervous system implants.

Literally, the word compliance suggests conformity in fulfilling official requirements. The thesis presents the results of the analysis and design of a class of protocols called compliant cryptologic protocols (CCP). The thesis presents a notion for compliance in cryptosystems that is conducive as a cryptologic goal. CCP are employed in security systems used by at least two mutually mistrusting sets of entities. The individuals in the sets of entities only trust the design of the security system and any trusted third party the security system may include. Such a security system can be thought of as a broker between the mistrusting sets of entities. In order to provide confidence in operation for the mistrusting sets of entities, CCP must provide compliance verification mechanisms. These mechanisms are employed either by all the entities or a set of authorised entities in the system to verify the compliance of the behaviour of various participating entities with the rules of the system. It is often stated that confidentiality, integrity and authentication are the primary interests of cryptology. It is evident from the literature that authentication mechanisms employ confidentiality and integrity services to achieve their goal. Therefore, the fundamental services that any cryptographic algorithm may provide are confidentiality and integrity only. Since controlling the behaviour of the entities is not a feasible cryptologic goal, the verification of the confidentiality of any data is a futile cryptologic exercise. For example, there exists no cryptologic mechanism that would prevent an entity from willingly or unwillingly exposing its private key corresponding to a certified public key. The confidentiality of the data can only be assumed. Therefore, any verification in cryptologic protocols must take the form of integrity verification mechanisms. Thus, compliance verification must take the form of integrity verification in cryptologic protocols. A definition of compliance that is conducive as a cryptologic goal is presented as a guarantee on the confidentiality and integrity services. The definitions are employed to provide a classification mechanism for various message formats in a cryptologic protocol. The classification assists in the characterisation of protocols, which assists in providing a focus for the goals of the research. The resulting concrete goal of the research is the study of those protocols that employ message formats to provide restricted confidentiality and universal integrity services to selected data. The thesis proposes an informal technique to understand, analyse and synthesise the integrity goals of a protocol system. The thesis contains a study of key recovery, electronic cash, peer-review, electronic auction, and electronic voting protocols. All these protocols contain message format that provide restricted confidentiality and universal integrity services to selected data. The study of key recovery systems aims to achieve robust key recovery relying only on the certification procedure and without the need for tamper-resistant system modules. The result of this study is a new technique for the design of key recovery systems called hybrid key escrow. The thesis identifies a class of compliant cryptologic protocols called secure selection protocols (SSP). The uniqueness of this class of protocols is the similarity in the goals of the member protocols, namely peer-review, electronic auction and electronic voting. The problem statement describing the goals of these protocols contain a tuple,(I, D), where I usually refers to an identity of a participant and D usually refers to the data selected by the participant. SSP are interested in providing confidentiality service to the tuple for hiding the relationship between I and D, and integrity service to the tuple after its formation to prevent the modification of the tuple. The thesis provides a schema to solve the instances of SSP by employing the electronic cash technology. The thesis makes a distinction between electronic cash technology and electronic payment technology. It will treat electronic cash technology to be a certification mechanism that allows the participants to obtain a certificate on their public key, without revealing the certificate or the public key to the certifier. The thesis abstracts the certificate and the public key as the data structure called anonymous token. It proposes design schemes for the peer-review, e-auction and e-voting protocols by employing the schema with the anonymous token abstraction. The thesis concludes by providing a variety of problem statements for future research that would further enrich the literature.

Microorganisms play key roles in biogeochemical cycling by facilitating the release of nutrients from organic compounds. In doing so, microbial communities use different organic substrates that yield different amounts of energy for maintenance and growth of the community. Carbon utilization efficiency (CUE) is a measure of the efficiency with which substrate carbon is metabolized versus mineralized by the microbial biomass. In the face of global change, we wanted to know how temperature affected the efficiency by which the soil microbial community utilized an added labile substrate, and to determine the effect of labile soil carbon depletion (through increasing duration of incubation) on the community's ability to respond to an added substrate. Cellobiose was added to soil samples as a model compound at several times over the course of a long-term incubation experiment to measure the amount of carbon assimilated or lost as CO2 respiration. Results indicated that in all cases, the time required for the microbial community to take up the added substrate increased as incubation time prior to substrate addition increased. However, the CUE was not affected by incubation time. Increased temperature generally decreased CUE, thus the microbial community was more efficient at 15 degrees C than at 25 degrees C. These results indicate that at warmer temperatures microbial communities may release more CO2 per unit of assimilated carbon. Current climate-carbon models have a fixed CUE to predict how much CO2 will be released as soil organic matter is decomposed. Based on our findings, this assumption may be incorrect due to variation of CUE with changing temperature. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
