Aurivillus intergrowth Bi4Ti3O12-5BiFeO(3) was demonstrated to be ferroelectric that evoked the possibility of achieving high temperature magnetoelectric property in this family of compounds. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed its structure to be orthorhombic [Fmm2; a=5.5061(11) A degrees, b=5.4857(7) A degrees, c=65.742(12) A degrees]. However, transmission electron microscopy established the random incidence of intergrowth at nanoscale corresponding to n=6 and n=7 members of the Aurivillius family. Diffuse ferroelectric orthorhombic to paraelectric tetragonal phase transition around 857 K was confirmed by dielectric and high temperature x-ray diffraction studies. Polarization versus electric field hysteresis loops associated with 2P(r) of 5.2 mu C/cm(2) and coercive field of 42 kV/cm were obtained at 300 K.

W/Cr codoped Bi4Ti3O12 ceramics, Bi4Ti3-xWxO12+x+0.2 wt%Cr2O3 (BITWC, x=0-0.15), were prepared using a solid-state reaction method. The crystallographic evolution and phase analysis were distinctly determined focusing on the X-ray diffraction peak changes in (020)/(200) and (220)/(1115) diffraction planes, by which the lattice parameters, a, b, and c can be refined. The thermal variations of permittivity, dielectric loss (tan delta), impedance, and electrical conductivity properties were characterized. A decrease in the values of Curie temperature from 675 degrees to 640 degrees C and an increase in the values of the dielectric constant due to an increase of W6+/Cr3+ content were observed. The highest piezoelectric constant, d(33) of 22 pC/N, was achieved with the composition of Bi4Ti2.975W0.025O12.025+0.2 wt% Cr2O3. Also, this composition had a lower electrical conductivity than the other investigated compositions.

Undoped and Al-, Ga-, and In-doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films were prepared on fused quartz substrates by chemical solution deposition. Their microstructures and optical properties were investigated by x-ray diffraction and UV-visible-NIR spectrophotometer, respectively. The optical band-gap energies, Urbach energies, and linear refractive indices of all the films are derived from the transmittance spectrum. Following the single oscillator model, the dispersion parameters such as the average oscillator energy (E-0) and dispersion energy (E-d) are achieved. The energy band gap and refractive indices are found to decrease with introducing the dopants of Al, Ga, and In, which is useful for the band-gap engineering and optical waveguide devices. The refractive index dispersion parameter (E-0/S-0) increases and the chemical bonding quantity (beta) decreases in all the films compared with those of bulk. It is supposed to be caused by the nanosize grains in films. (c) 2009 American Institute of Physics. [DOI 10.1063/1.3138813]

Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO) and Bi3.25In0.75Ti3O12 (BTO:In) thin films were prepared on fused quartz and LaNiO3/Si (LNO) substrates by chemical solution deposition (CSD). Their microstructures, ferroelectric and optical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, ferroelectric tester and UV-visible-NIR spectrophotometer, respectively. The optical band-gaps of the films were found to be 3.64 and 3.45 eV for the BTO and BTO:In films, respectively. Optical constants (refractive indexes and extinction coefficients) were determined from the optical transmittance spectra using the envelope method. Following the single electronic oscillator model, the single oscillator energy E-0, the dispersion energy E-d, the average interband oscillator wavelength lambda(0), the average oscillator strength S-0, the refractive index dispersion parameter (E-0/S-0), the chemical bonding quantity beta, and the long wavelength refractive index n(infinity) were obtained and analyzed. Both the refractive index and extinction coefficient of the BTO:In films are smaller than those of the BTO films. Furthermore, the refractive index dispersion parameter (E-0/S-0) increases and the chemical bonding quantity beta decreases in the BTO and BTO:In films compared with those of bulk. Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) thin films and powders with x ranging from 0 to 0.75 were prepared by the polymeric precursor solution. The effect of lanthanum on the structure of BIT powders was investigated by Rietveld Method. The increase of lanthanum content does not lead to any secondary phases. Orthorhombicity of the bismuth titanate (BIT) crystal lattice decreased with the increase of lanthanum content due the reduction of a/b ratio. The BLT films show piezoelectric coefficients of 45, 19, 16 and 10 pm/V for x = 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75, respectively. The piezoelectric response is strongly reduced by the amount of lanthanum added to the system. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Pure-and lanthanun doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate using a polymeric precursor solution. Annealing in static air and oxygen atmosphere was performed at 700 degrees C for 2 h. The obtained films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor were measured in the frequency region from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. Electrical characterization of the films pointed to ferroelectricity via hysteresis loop. Films annealed in static air possess a dielectric constant higher than films annealed in oxygen atmosphere due to differences in the grain size, crystallinity and structural defects. A regularly shaped hystereses loop is observed after annealing in static air. The obtained results suggest that the annealing in oxygen atmosphere can increase the trapped charge and the relaxation phenomenon. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The film thickness dependence on the ferroelectric properties of lanthanum modified bismuth titanate Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 was investigated. Films with thicknesses ranging from 230 to 404 nut were grown on platinum-coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method. The internal strain is strongly influenced by the film thickness. The morphology of the film changes as the number of layers increases indicating a thickness dependent grain size. The leakage current, remanent polarization and drive voltage were also affected by the film thickness. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanosized bismuth titanate was prepared via high-energy ball milling process through mechanically assisted synthesis directly from their oxide mixture of Bi2O3 and TiO2. Only Bi4Ti3O12 phase was formed after 3 h of milling time. The excess of 3 wt% Bi2O3 added in the initial mixture before milling does not improve significantly the formation of Bi4Ti3O12 phase comparing to stoichiometric mixture. The formed phase was amorphized independently of the milling time, The Rietveld analysis was adopted to determine the crystal structure symmetry, amount of amorphous phase, crystallite size and microstrains. With increasing the milling time from 3 to 12 h, the particle size of formed Bi4Ti3O12 did not reduced significantly. That was confirmed by SEM and TEM analysis. The particle size was less than 20 nm and show strong tendency to agglomeration. The electron diffraction pattern indicates that Bi4Ti3O12 crystalline powder is embedded in an amorphous phase of bismuth titanate. Phase composition and atom ratio in BIT ceramics were determined by X-ray diffraction and EDS analysis. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Our efforts were directed to the preparation of bismuth titanate-Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) by two procedures: mechanically assisted synthesis and polymeric precursor method to display a variety of their advantages. To follow the nucleation and phase formation of BIT, XRD and Rietveld refinement analysis were used and it was shown that Bi4Ti3O12 ceramic can been successfully prepared from nano-sized powders obtained by both methods. The ferroelectric properties were determined and the loops from BIT obtained by polymeric precursor method were not fully saturated with a remnant polarization of 20 mu C/cm(2) and coercitive field of 1500 kV/cm. BIT obtained from powders prepared by mechanically assisted synthesis shows a remnant polarization of 0.65 mu C/cm(2) and coercitive field of 1050 kV/cm. The grain morphology may be the factor causing the observed differences. (C) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Pure and niobium doped bismuth titanate ceramics (Bi4Ti3-xNbxO12 (BTN)), with x ranging from 0 to 0.4 were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction showed no secondary phases. Increasing niobium content leads to more resistive ceramics. The shape and size of the grains are strongly influenced by the niobiurn added to the system. The dielectric constant is not influenced by the niobium addition while hysteresis loops are significantly narrowed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Pure and lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate using a polymeric precursor solution. The spin-coated films were specular and crack-free and crystalline after annealing at 700 degreesC for 2 h. Crystallinity and morphological evaluation were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Multilayered films obtained using the intermediate-crystalline layer route present a dense microstructure with spherical grains. Films obtained using the intermediate-amorphous layer, present elongated grains around 250 nm in size. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 films are strongly affected by the crystallization route. The hysteresis loops are fully saturated with a remnant polarization and drive voltage of the films, heat-treated by the intermediate-crystalline (P-r = 20.2 muC/cm(2) and V = 1.35 V) and for the film heat-treated by amorphous route (P-r = 22.4 muC/cm(2) and V = 2.99 V). Bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12-BIT) films were evaluated for use as lead-free piezoelectric thin-films in micro-electromechanical systems. The films were grown by the polymeric precursor method on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (1 0 0) (Pt) bottom electrodes at 700 degrees C for 2 h in static air and oxygen atmospheres. The domain structure was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Annealing in static air leads to better ferroelectric properties, higher remanent polarization, lower drive voltages and higher piezoelectric coefficient. on the other hand, oxygen atmosphere favors the imprint phenomenon and reduces the piezoelectric coefficient dramatically. Impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show a dramatic increase in the resistivity for the films annealed in static air atmopshere. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

a-b axis-oriented, lanthanum doped Bi4Ti3O12 (BLT) thin films with a TiO2 rutile buffer layer deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were grown by the soft chemical method. Butterfly dielectric behavior has been achieved and can be ascribed to the ferroelectric domain switching. The remanent polarization and the coercive voltage for the film deposited on TiO2 buffer layer were 22.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.8 V, respectively. Random-oriented BLT films showed a reduction in switching polarization when compared to the a-b axis-oriented films. Due to the excellent physical properties, these films are a promising candidate for use in lead-free applications in ferroelectric devices. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
