The Neogene biostratigraphy presented here is based on the study of 230 samples through 737 m of pelagic sediment in Hole 806B. Sediment accumulation is interrupted only once in the uppermost lower Miocene (Zone N6), apparently coincident with a widespread deep-sea hiatus. Preservation of planktonic foraminifers through the section ranges from good to moderately poor. One hundred and ten species of planktonic foraminifers were identified; taxonomic notes on most species are included. All of the standard low-latitude Neogene foraminiferal zones are delineated, with the exceptions of Zones N8 and N9 because of a high first occurrence of Orbulina, and Zones N18 and N19 because of a high first occurrence of Sphaeroidinella dehiscens. Good agreement exists between the published account of the variation in planktonic foraminiferal species richness and the rates of diversification and turnover, and measurements of these evolutionary indexes in the record of Hole 806B. The global pattern of change in tropical/transitional species richness is paralleled in Hole 806B, with departures caused by either ecological conditions peculiar to the western equatorial Pacific or by inexactness in the estimation of million-year intervals in Hole 806B. Temporal changes in the relative abundance of taxa in the sediment assemblages, considered in light of their depth habitats, reveal a detailed picture of historical change in the structure of the upper water column over the Ontong Java Plateau. The dominance of surface dwellers (Paragloborotalia kugleri, P. mayeri, Dentoglobigerina altispira, Globigerinita glutinata, and Globigerinoides spp.) throughout the lower and middle Miocene is replaced by a more equitable distribution of surface (D. altispira and Globigerinoides spp.), intermediate (Globorotalia menardii plexus), and deep (Streptochilus spp.) dwellers in the late Miocene, following the closing of the Indo-Pacific Seaway and the initiation of large-scale glaciation in the Antarctic. The shoaling of the thermocline along the equator engendered by these climatic and tectonic events persisted through the Pliocene, when initial increases in the abundance of a new set of shallow, intermediate, and deep dwelling species of planktonic foraminifers coincide with the closing of the Panamanian Seaway.

The 136 m of calcareous oozes recovered in Hole 810C span the interval from upper Maastrichtian to middle Pleistocene. Three major hiatuses interrupt the sequence, with the topmost part of the Maastrichtian through the entire lower Paleocene, most of the lower Eocene, and the entire middle Eocene through most of the middle Miocene missing. Severe reworking and displacement affected the lower part of the succession from the Maastrichtian through the middle Miocene. Reworking and displacement gradually decreased in the upper portion. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy enabled us to calibrate precisely the nearly complete magnetic reversal sequence of the Pliocene to the late Pleistocene. Two minor hiatuses detected by calcareous nannofossils across the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary and in the upper lower Pleistocene, respectively, resulted in shortening of the Olduvai and Jaramillo Events within the Matuyama Chron of the magnetic reversal sequence.

Cores from four Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites were examined for planktonic foraminifers. One sample per core (from core-catchers in Holes 806B and 807B and from Section 4 in Holes 847B and 852B) was examined through the interval representing the last 5.8 m.y. Sites 806 (0°19.1'N; 159°21.7'E) and 847 (0o12.1'N; 95°19.2'W) are beneath the equatorial divergence zone. Sites 807 (3°36.4'N; 156°37.5'E) and 852 (5°19.6'N; 110°4.6'W) are located north of the equator in the convergence zone created by the interaction of the westward-flowing South Equatorial Current (SEC) and the eastward-flowing North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC). Specimens were identified to species and then grouped according to depth habitat and trophic level. Species richness and diversity were also calculated. Tropical neogloboquadrinids have been more abundant in the eastern than in the western equatorial Pacific Ocean throughout the last 5.8 m.y. During the mid-Pliocene (3.8-3.2 Ma), their abundance increased at all sites, while during the Pleistocene (after ~ 1.6 Ma), they expanded in the east and declined in the west. This suggests an increase in surface-water productivity across the Pacific Ocean during the closing of the Central American seaway and an exacerbation of the productivity asymmetry between the eastern and western equatorial regions during the Pleistocene. This faunal evidence agrees with eolian grain-size data (Hovan, 1995) and diatom flux data (Iwai, this volume), which suggest increases in tradewind strength in the eastern equatorial Pacific that centered around 3.5 and 0.5 Ma. The present longitudinal zonation of thermocline dwelling species, a response to the piling of warm surface water in the western equatorial region of the Pacific, seems to have developed after 2.4 Ma, not directly after the closing of the Panama seaway (3.2 Ma). Apparently, after 2.4 Ma, the piling warm water in the west overwhelmed the upwelling of nutrients into the photic zone in that region, creating the Oceanographic asymmetry that exists in the modern tropical Pacific and is reflected in the microfossil record. In the upper Miocene and lower Pliocene sediments, the ratio of thermocline-dwelling species to mixed-layer dwellers is 60%:40%. During the mid-Pliocene, the western sites became 40% thermocline and 60% mixed-layer dwellers. Subsequent to -2.4 Ma, the asymmetry increased to 20%: 80% in the west and the reverse in the east. This documents the gradual thickening of the warm-water layer piled up in the western tropical Pacific over the last 5.8 m.y. and reveals two "steps" in the biotic trend that can be associated with specific events in the physical environment.

Planktonic foraminifers were studied from 213 samples collected during Leg 112 at 10 sites located on the continental shelf and slope off Peru. Because planktonic foraminifers occur discontinuously downcore, detailed biostratigraphic zonation was not defined. However, it was possible to distinguish early and middle Eocene, early and late Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene sediments on the basis of the planktonic foraminifers. The oldest sediments of Zone P6 of early Eocene age were obtained from the basal part of Hole 688E, which was penetrated to 779.0 m below seafloor (bsf). A biosiliceous facies of the area predominates above the N6-N7 zonal interval of early Miocene age. All sites are within the present coastal upwelling area off Peru, and many of the late Pliocene and Pleistocene assemblages are similar to those that are characteristic of modern upwelling areas. The core samples differ, however, by having a predominance of cold-water elements, such as Neogloboquadrina incompta and N. pachyderma. Warm-water species are prevalent at some horizons in the cores, suggesting shifts of the coastal upwelling centers or warmer climatic events.

The biostratigraphy of Miocene-age sediment samples recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1143 and 1146, South China Sea, is presented. The preservation of the planktonic foraminifers recovered from both sites varies widely, from poor to very good. The volume of biogenic sediment in the >63-µm size fraction also varies considerably, with many samples being dominated by mud. In comparison to shipboard biostratigraphy, based on core catcher analyses with a depth resolution of ~10 m, we analyzed samples from the two stratigraphic columns every 2-3 m (~45- to 93-k.y. resolution). The placement of planktonic foraminifer zonal boundaries was made at a resolution of ~1.5 m at Site 1146 and ~3.0 m at Site 1143. The higher resolution has resulted in significant changes in biostratigraphic zonal boundary locations compared to shipboard results. For the time interval of 5.54-10.49 Ma, the changes in zonation reveal similar age-depth models at both sites, with three segments of changing sedimentation rate through the upper Miocene, though the differences in sedimentation rates at Site 1146 are subtler than those at Site 1143. The boundary between lithologic Units II and III at Site 1146 corresponds to a sharp change in sedimentation rate (58 to 21 m/m.y.) at 15.1 Ma (the first occurrence of Orbulina suturalis). At this site, the interval from 16.4 to 15.1 Ma is characterized by very high mass accumulation rates in the noncarbonate fraction. Above this interval the carbonate fraction becomes increasingly important in the sediment flux to the South China Sea. At Site 1143, sedimentation rates increase from 8 to 99 m/m.y. at 8.6 Ma. This corresponds to a dramatic increase in both carbonate and noncarbonate mass accumulation rates at the site, but no change in lithology.

This study presents a new Miocene biostratigraphic synthesis for the high-latitude northeastern North Atlantic region. Via correlations to the bio-magnetostratigraphy and oxygen isotope records of Ocean Drilling Program and Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites, the ages of shallower North Sea deposits have been better constrained. The result has been an improved precision and documentation of the age designations of the existing North Sea foraminiferal zonal boundaries of King (1989) and Gradstein and ¤ckström (1996). All calibrations have been updated to the Astronomically Tuned Neogene Time Scale (ATNTS) of Lourens et al. (2004). This improved Miocene biozonation has been achieved through: the updating of age calibrations for key microfossil bioevents, identification of new events, and integration of new biostratigraphic data from a foraminiferal analysis of commercial wells in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea. The new zonation has been successfully applied to two commercial wells and an onshore research borehole. At these high latitudes, where standard zonal markers are often absent, integration of microfossil groups significantly improves temporal resolution. The new zonation comprises 11 Nordic Miocene (NM) Zones with an average duration of 1 to 2 million years. This multi-group combination of a total of 92 bioevents (70 foraminifers and bolboformids; 16 dinoflagellate cysts and acritarchs; 6 marine diatoms) facilitates zonal identification throughout the Nordic Atlantic region. With the highest proportion of events being of calcareous walled microfossils, this zonation is primarily suited to micropaleontologists. A correlation of this Miocene biostratigraphy with a re-calibrated oxygen isotope record for DSDP Site 608 suggests a strong correlation between Miocene planktonic microfossil turnover rates and the inferred paleoclimatic trends. Benthic foraminifera zonal boundaries appear to often coincide with Miocene global sequence boundaries. The biostratigraphic record is punctuated by four main stratigraphic hiati which show variation in their geographic and temporal extent. These are related to the following regional unconformities: basal Neogene, Lower/Middle Miocene ("mid-Miocene unconformity"), basal Upper Miocene and basal Messinian unconformities. Further coring of Neogene sections in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea may better constrain their extent and their effect on the biostratigraphic record.

Tropical planktonic foraminifers occur throughout the sequences at all sites of Leg 85, and the standard planktonic foraminiferal zonation of Blow (1969) is applicable to most of the recovered sequences. However, the abundance and state of preservation of foraminifers decline markedly in certain intervals because of the effects of dissolution. Although siliceous microfossils studied on this leg indicate recovery of nearly complete records for the Pleistocene to Oligocene interval, the planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy is interrupted by strongly dissolved sections at all sites. Particularly, faunas assignable to Zone N7 (early Miocene) and Zone N15-16 (early late Miocene) are almost totally unrecognizable throughout the eastern equatorial Pacific. Well-preserved and diverse planktonic foraminifers occur in the lower middle Miocene, where the evolutionary developments of Orbulina universa d'Orbigny and Globorotalia fohsi Cushman and Ellisor are well represented. The Orbulina first appearance datum is observed to be nearly coincident with the last occurrence level of the diatom Annellus californicus Tempère, thus .establishing an age of 15 Ma for this datum by using the paleomagnetic calibration of the diatom datum. Moderately well-preserved late Eocene planktonic foraminifers occur in the carbonate sediments immediately overlying the basalt basement at Sites 573 and 574. The Eocene-Oligocene faunal transition, however, is masked at both sites by an intercalation of metalliferous layers containing no planktonic foraminifers.

Leg 92 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project cored sediments containing calcareous microfossils at six sites along 19°S latitude in the South Pacific Ocean. Shipboard examination of these sediments revealed planktonic foraminifers of uppermost Oligocene through Pleistocene age that were identified and assigned to biostratigraphic zones according to the tropical zonation scheme of Blow (1969). Preservation of planktonic foraminifers in the sites from Leg 92 has been affected by the position of each site with respect to the lysocline and calcium carbonate compensation depth (CCD) at the time of deposition, depth of burial, and sediment accumulation rate (rate of burial). An additional factor may also be important, especially in the sediments deposited immediately above basement. Evidence of poor preservation in basal sediments of Holes 600C and 601, which have always been shallower than both the lysocline and the CCD, suggests that hydrothermal solutions circulating within young oceanic crust may penetrate the overlying sediments and affect the preservation of calcareous microfossils deposited there.

The planktonic foraminiferal zonation of Jenkins and Srinivasan (1986), which was defined for the southwestern sector of the temperate South Pacific Ocean, was successfully extended to the temperate sequences at Site 704. The zonation is based on first and last appearances of globorotalids, principally Globoconella species, which are indigenous to temperate surface-water masses. Most of the first and last appearances at ODP Site 704 are diachronous with those in the warmer temperate to subtropical South Atlantic, North Atlantic, and South Pacific oceans. The upper Miocene, upper Pliocene, and Quaternary sequences are punctuated by frequent incursions of subantarctic and polar assemblages of planktonic foraminifers. I assume that the appearance of an assemblage dominated by sinistral Neogloboquadrina pachyderma means that the Polar Front has migrated northward, but I do not know its position north or south of the site based on this preliminary work. The upper Miocene sequence contains five incursions between 6.5 and 5 Ma and the upper Pliocene and Quaternary sequence contains 16 events since 2.47 Ma. These are minimum estimates because the number of observed events will probably increase with higher sample density and use of quantitative methods to reveal more subtle events.

High biogenic sedimentation rates in the late Neogene at DSDP Site 590 (1293 m) provide an exceptional opportunity to evaluate late Neogene (late Miocene to latest Pliocene) paleoceanography in waters transitional between temperate and warm-subtropical water masses. Oxygen and carbon isotope analyses and quantitative planktonic foraminiferal data have been used to interpret the late Neogene paleoceanographic evolution of this site. Faunal and isotopic data from Site 590 show a progression of paleoceanographic events between 6.7 and 4.3 Ma, during the latest Miocene and early Pliocene. First, a permanent depletion in both planktonic and benthic foraminiferal d13C, between 6.7 and 6.2 Ma, can be correlated to the globally recognized late Miocene carbon isotope shift. Second, a 0.5 per mil enrichment in benthic foraminiferal d18O between 5.6 and 4.7 Ma in the latest Miocene to early Pliocene corresponds to the latest Miocene oxygen isotopic enrichment at Site 284, located in temperate waters south of Site 590. This enrichment in d18O coincides with a time of cool surface waters, as is suggested by high frequencies of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and low frequencies of the warmer-water planktonic foraminifers, as well as by an enrichment in planktonic foraminiferal d18O relative to the earlier Miocene. By 4.6 Ma, benthic foraminiferal d18O values become depleted and remain fairly stable until about 3.8 Ma. The early Pliocene (~4.3 to 3.2 Ma) is marked by a significant increase in biogenic sedimentation rates (37.7 to 83.3 m/m.y.). During this time, heaviest values in planktonic foraminiferal d18O are associated with a decrease in the gradient between surface and intermediate-water d13C and d18O, a 1.0 per mil depletion in the d13C of two species of planktonic foraminifers, and a mixture of warm and cool planktonic foraminiferal elements. These data suggest that localized upwelling at the Subtropical Divergence produced an increase in surface-water productivity during the early Pliocene. A two-step enrichment in benthic foraminiferal d18O occurs in the late Pliocene sequence at Site 590. A 0.3 per mil average enrichment at about 3.6 Ma is followed by a 0.5 per mil enrichment at 2.7 Ma. These two events can be correlated with the two-step isotopic enrichment associated with late Pliocene climatic instability and the initiation of Northern Hemisphere glaciation.

The late Neogene was a time of cryosphere development in the northern hemisphere. The present study was carried out to estimate the sea surface temperature (SST) change during this period based on the quantitative planktonic foraminiferal data of 8 DSDP sites in the western Pacific. Target factor analysis has been applied to the conventional transfer function approach to overcome the no-analog conditions caused by evolutionary faunal changes. By applying this technique through a combination of time-slice and time-series studies, the SST history of the last 5.3 Ma has been reconstructed for the low latitude western Pacific. Although the present data set is close to the statistical limits of factor analysis, the clear presence of sensible variations in individual SST time-series suggests the feasibility and reliability of this method in paleoceanographic studies. The estimated SST curves display the general trend of the temperature fluctuations and reveal three major cool periods in the late Neogene, i.e. the early Pliocene (4.7 3.5 Ma), the late Pliocene (3.1-2.7 Ma), and the latest Pliocene to early Pleistocene (2.2-1.0 Ma). Cool events are reflected in the increase of seasonality and meridional SST gradient in the subtropical area. The latest Pliocene to early Pleistocene cooling is most important in the late Neogene climatic evolution. It differs from the previous cool events in its irreversible, steplike change in SST, which established the glacial climate characteristic of the late Pleistocene. The winter and summer SST decreased by 3.3-5.4°C and 1.0 2.1C in the subtropics, by 0.9°C and 0.6C in the equatorial region, and showed little or no cooling in the tropics. Moreover, this cooling event occurred as a gradual SST decrease during 2.2 1.0 Ma at the warmer subtropical sites, while that at cooler subtropical site was an abrupt SST drop at 2.2 Ma. In contrast, equatorial and tropical western Pacific experienced only minor SST change in the entire late Neogene. In general, subtropics was much more sensitive to climatic forcing than tropics and the cooling events were most extensive in the cooler subtropics. The early Pliocene cool periods can be correlated to the Antarctic ice volume fluctuation, and the latest Pliocene early Pleistocene cooling reflects the climatic evolution during the cryosphere development of the northern hemisphere.

Aim: In the current climate of medical education, there is an ever-increasing demand for and emphasis on simulation as both a teaching and training tool. The objective of our study was to compare the realism and practicality of a number of artificial blood products that could be used for high-fidelity simulation. Method: A literature and internet search was performed and 15 artificial blood products were identified from a variety of sources. One product was excluded due to its potential toxicity risks. Five observers, blinded to the products, performed two assessments on each product using an evaluation tool with 14 predefined criteria including color, consistency, clotting, and staining potential to manikin skin and clothing. Each criterion was rated using a five-point Likert scale. The products were left for 24 hours, both refrigerated and at room temperature, and then reassessed. Statistical analysis was performed to identify the most suitable products, and both inter- and intra-rater variability were examined. Results: Three products scored consistently well with all five assessors, with one product in particular scoring well in almost every criterion. This highest-rated product had a mean rating of 3.6 of 5.0 (95% posterior Interval 3.4-3.7). Inter-rater variability was minor with average ratings varying from 3.0 to 3.4 between the highest and lowest scorer. Intrarater variability was negligible with good agreement between first and second rating as per weighted kappa scores (K = 0.67). Conclusion: The most realistic and practical form of artificial blood identified was a commercial product called KD151 Flowing Blood Syrup. It was found to be not only realistic in appearance but practical in terms of storage and stain removal.
