The renormalization properties of gauge-invariant composite operators that vanish when the classical equations of motion are used (class II^a operators) and which lead to diagrams where the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly occurs are discussed. It is shown that gauge-invariant operators of this kind do need, in general, nonvanishing gauge-invariant (class I) counterterms.

In this work we consider the two-point Green's functions in (1 + 1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics and show that the correct implementation of analytic regularization gives a gauge invariant result for the vacuum polarization amplitude and the correct coefficient for the axial anomaly.

We compute the Dirac indexes for. the two spin structures kappa(0) and kappa(1) for Eguchi-Hanson metrics with nonzero total mass. It shows that the Dirac indexes do not vanish in general, and axial anomaly exists. When the metric has zero total mass, the Dirac index vanishes for the spin structure no, and no axial anomaly exists in this case.

Scale-invariant running couplings are constructed for several quarks being decoupled together, without reference to intermediate thresholds. Large-momentum scales can also be included. The result is a multi-scale generalization of the renormalization group applicable to any order. Inconsistencies in the usual decoupling procedure with a single running coupling can then be avoided, e.g., when cancelling anomalous corrections from t, b quarks to the axial charge of the proton. Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt den anomalen Sektor bzw. den Sektor ungerader innerer Parität in mesonischer chiraler Störungsrechnung (mesonische ChPT) bis zur chiralen Ordnung O(q^6). Auf eine Einführung in die Quantenchromodynamik (QCD) und ihrer Verknüpfung mit der chiralen Symmetrie folgt die Betrachtung der mesonischen ChPT im Sektor gerader sowie ungerader innerer Parität bis zur Ordnung O(q^4). Der sogenannte Wess-Zumino-Witten Term, welcher den Einfluss der axialen Anomalie bezogen auf die ChPT widerspiegelt, wird studiert. Anschließend wird die allgemeinste Lagrangedichte der Ordnung O(q^6) im Sektor ungerader innerer Parität detailiert analysiert. Sie enthält in ihrer SU(3)-Formulierung 23 Niederenergiekonstanten(low-energy constant=LEC). Aus Sicht der ChPT sind diese LECs freie Parameter, die auf irgendeine Art und Weise fixiert werden müssen. Es wird herausgearbeitet, bei welchen Prozessen und in welchen Kombinationen die jeweiligen LECs auftreten. Daraufhin wird versucht so viele dieser LECs wie möglich mittels Vektormesondominanz (VMD) sowie experimenteller Daten abzuschätzen und anzupassen. Hierfür wird zuerst die Vorgehensweise einer konsistenten Rechnung im Sektor ungerader innerer Parität bis zur Ordnung O(q^6) studiert, gefolgt von der Berechnung von insgesamt vierzehn geeigneten Prozessen im Rahmen der ChPT bis zur Ordnung O(q^6). Unter Verwendung experimenteller Daten werden dreizehn der LECs angepasst, wobei gegenwärtig nicht bei allen betrachteten Prozessen experimentelle Daten zur Verfügung stehen. Die Ergebnisse werden diskutiert und Unterschiede bzw. Übereinstimmungen mit anderen Rechnungen herausgearbeitet. Zusammenfassend erhält man einen umfassenden Einblick in den Sektor ungerader innerer Parität in mesonischer ChPT bis zur Ordnung O(q^6).

There are several classes of homogeneous Fermi systems that are characterized by the topology of the energy spectrum of fermionic quasiparticles: (i) gapless systems with a Fermi surface, (ii) systems with a gap in their spectrum, (iii) gapless systems with topologically stable point nodes (Fermi points), and (iv) gapless systems with topologically unstable lines of nodes (Fermi lines). Superfluid 3He-A and electroweak vacuum belong to the universality class 3. The fermionic quasiparticles (particles) in this class are chiral: they are left-handed or right-handed. The collective bosonic modes of systems of class 3 are the effective gauge and gravitational fields. The great advantage of superfluid 3He-A is that we can perform experiments by using this condensed matter and thereby simulate many phenomena in high energy physics, including axial anomaly, baryoproduction, and magnetogenesis. 3He-A textures induce a nontrivial effective metrics of the space, where the free quasiparticles move along geodesics. With 3He-A one can simulate event horizons, Hawking radiation, rotating vacuum, etc. High-temperature superconductors are believed to belong to class 4. They have gapless fermionic quasiparticles with a “relativistic” spectrum close to gap nodes, which allows application of ideas developed for superfluid 3He-A.

We show that all Green's functions of the Schwinger and axial models can be obtained one from the other. In particular, we show that the two models have the same chiral anomaly. Finally it is demonstrated that the Schwinger model can keep gauge invariance for an arbitrary mass, dispensing with an additional gauge group integration.

We consider an extension of the axial model where local gauge symmetries are taken into account. The result is a mixing of the axial and Schwinger models. The anomaly of the axial current is calculated by means of the Fujikawa path integral technique and the model is also solved. Besides the well-known features of the particular models (axial and Schwinger) an effective interaction of scalar and gauge fields via a topological current is obtained. This term is responsible for the appearance of massive poles in the propagators that are different from those of both models.

In the monograph metalliferous sediments of the East Pacific Rise near 21°S are under consideration. Distribution trends of chemical, mineral and grain size compositions of metalliferous sediments accumulated near the axis of this ultrafast spreading segment of the EPR are shown. On the basis of lithological and geochemical investigations spatial and temporal variations of hydrothermal activity are estimated. Migration rates of hydrothermal fields along the spreading axis are calculated. The model of cyclic hydrothermal process is suggested as a result of tectono-magmatic development of the spreding centre.

A quantitative model of development of magmatic and ore-magmatic systems under crests of mid-ocean ridges is constructed. Correct physical models of melting zone formation in approximation to active spreading, non-stationary dynamics of magma intrusion from a center of generation, filling of magma chambers of various shapes, feeding of fissure-type volcanoes, and retrograde boiling of melts during solidification of intrusive bodies beneath axial zones of spreading in crests of ridges are proposed. Physicochemical and mathematical theories of disintegration of multi-component solutions, growth of liquational drops of ore melts, and sublimation of components from magmatic gases are elaborated. Methods for constructing physically correct models of heat and mass transfer in heterophase media are devised. Modeling of development of magmatic and ore-magmatic systems on the basis of the Usov-Kuznetsov facies method and the Pospelov system approach are advanced. For quantitative models numerical circuits are developed and numerical experiments are carried out.

The South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA) is one of the most outstanding anomalies of the geomagnetic field. The SAMA secular variation was obtained and compared to the evolution of other anomalies using spherical harmonic field models for the 1590-2005 period. An analysis of data from four South American observatories shows how this large scale anomaly affected their measurements. Since SAMA is a low total field anomaly, the field was separated into its nondipolar, quadrupolar and octupolar parts. The time evolution of the non-dipole/total, quadrupolar/total and octupolar/total field ratios yielded increasingly high values for the South Atlantic since 1750. The SAMA evolution is compared to the evolution of other large scale surface geomagnetic features like the North and the South Pole and the Siberia High, and this comparison shows the intensity equilibrium between these anomalies in both hemispheres. The analysis of non-dipole fields in historical period suggests that SAMA is governed by (i) quadrupolar field for drift, and (ii) quadrupolar and octupolar fields for intensity and area of influence. Furthermore, our study reinforces the possibility that SAMA may be related to reverse fluxes in the outer core under the South Atlantic region.

Background: Identifying clusters of acute paracoccidioidomycosis cases could potentially help in identifying the environmental factors that influence the incidence of this mycosis. However, unlike other endemic mycoses, there are no published reports of clusters of paracoccidioidomycosis. Methodology/Principal Findings: A retrospective cluster detection test was applied to verify if an excess of acute form (AF) paracoccidioidomycosis cases in time and/or space occurred in Botucatu, an endemic area in Sao Paulo State. The scan-test SaTScan v7.0.3 was set to find clusters for the maximum temporal period of 1 year. The temporal test indicated a significant cluster in 1985 (P<0.005). This cluster comprised 10 cases, although 2.19 were expected for this year in this area. Age and clinical presentation of these cases were typical of AF paracccidioidomycosis. The space-time test confirmed the temporal cluster in 1985 and showed the localities where the risk was higher in that year. The cluster suggests that some particularities took place in the antecedent years in those localities. Analysis of climate variables showed that soil water storage was atypically high in 1982/83 (similar to 2.11/2.5 SD above mean), and the absolute air humidity in 1984, the year preceding the cluster, was much higher than normal (similar to 1.6 SD above mean), conditions that may have favored, respectively, antecedent fungal growth in the soil and conidia liberation in 1984, the probable year of exposure. These climatic anomalies in this area was due to the 1982/83 El Nino event, the strongest in the last 50 years. Conclusions/Significance: We describe the first cluster of AF paracoccidioidomycosis, which was potentially linked to a climatic anomaly caused by the 1982/83 El Nino Southern Oscillation. This finding is important because it may help to clarify the conditions that favor Paracoccidioides brasiliensis survival and growth in the environment and that enhance human exposure, thus allowing the development of preventive measures.

The p53 tumor suppressor gene is the most frequently mutated gene in human cancer; this gene is mutated in up to 50% of human tumors. It has a critical role in the cell cycle, apoptosis and cell senescence, and it participates in many crucial physiological and pathological processes. Polymorphisms of p53 have been suggested to be associated with genetically determined susceptibility in various types of cancer. Another process involved with the development and progression of tumors is DNA hypermethylation. Aberrant methylation of the promoter is an alternative epigenetic change in genetic mechanisms, leading to tumor suppressor gene inactivation. In the present study, we examined the TP53 Arg72Pro and Pro47Ser polymorphisms using PCR-RFLP and the pattern of methylation of the p53 gene by methylation-specific PCR in 90 extra-axial brain tumor samples. Patients who had the allele Pro of the TP53 Arg72Pro polymorphism had an increased risk of tumor development ( odds ratio, OR = 3.23; confidence interval at 95%, 95% CI = 1.71-6.08; P = 0.003), as did the allele Ser of TP53 Pro47Ser polymorphism (OR = 1.28; 95% CI = 0.03-2.10; P = 0.01). Comparison of overall survival of patients did not show significant differences. In the analysis of DNA methylation, we observed that 37.5% of meningiomas, 30% of schwannomas and 52.6% of metastases were hypermethylated, suggesting that methylation is important for tumor progression. We suggest that TP53 Pro47Ser and Arg72Pro polymorphisms and DNA hypermethylation are involved in susceptibility for developing extra-axial brain tumors.
