Hybrid multiprocessor architectures which combine re-configurable computing and multiprocessors on a chip are being proposed to transcend the performance of standard multi-core parallel systems. Both fine-grained and coarse-grained parallel algorithm implementations are feasible in such hybrid frameworks. A compositional strategy for designing fine-grained multi-phase regular processor arrays to target hybrid architectures is presented in this paper. The method is based on deriving component designs using classical regular array techniques and composing the components into a unified global design. Effective designs with phase-changes and data routing at run-time are characteristics of these designs. In order to describe the data transfer between phases, the concept of communication domain is introduced so that the producer–consumer relationship arising from multi-phase computation can be treated in a unified way as a data routing phase. This technique is applied to derive new designs of multi-phase regular arrays with different dataflow between phases of computation.

The biological role of steroid 5 alpha-reductase isozymes (encoded by the SRD5A1 and SRD5A2 genes) and angiogenic factors that play important roles in the pathogenesis and vascularization of prostate cancer (PC) is poorly understood. The sub-cellular expression of these isozymes and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in PC tissue microarrays (n=62) was examined using immunohistochemistry. The effect of SRD5A inhibition on the angiogenesis pathway genes in PC was also examined in prostate cell lines, LNCaP, PC3, and RWPE-1, by treating them with the SRD5A inhibitors finasteride and dutasteride, followed by western blot, quantitative PCR, and ELISA chip array techniques. In PC tissues, nuclear SRD5A1 expression was strongly associated with higher cancer Gleason scores (P=0.02), higher cancer stage (P=0.01), and higher serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels (P=0.01), whereas nuclear SRD5A2 expression was correlated with VEGF expression (P=0.01). Prostate tumor cell viability was significantly reduced in dutasteride-treated PC3 and RWPE-1 cells compared with finasteride-treated groups. Expression of the angiogenesis pathway genes transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFB1), endothelin (EDN1), TGF alpha (TGFA), and VEGFR1 was upregulated in LNCaP cells, and at least 7 out of 21 genes were upregulated in PC3 cells treated with finasteride (25 mu M). Our findings suggest that SRD5A1 expression predominates in advanced PC, and that inhibition of SRD5A1 and SRD5A2 together was more effective in reducing cell numbers than inhibition of SRD5A2 alone. However, these inhibitors did not show any significant difference in prostate cell angiogenic response. Interestingly, some angiogenic genes remained activated after treatment, possibly due to the duration of treatment and tumor resistance to inhibitors. Endocrine-Related Cancer (2010) 17 757-770

A small supernumerary marker chromosome (sSMC) derived from chromosome 22 is a relatively common cytogenetic finding. This sSMC typically results in tetrasomy for a chromosomal region that spans the chromosome 22p arm and the proximal 2 Mb of 22q11.21. Using classical cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, and array techniques, 7 patients with sSMCs derived from chromosome 22 were studied: 4 non-related and 3 from the same family (mother, daughter, and son). The sSMCs in all patients were dicentric and bisatellited chromosomes with breakpoints in the chromosome 22 low-copy repeat A region, resulting in cat eye syndrome (CES) due to chromosome 22 partial tetrasomy 22pter -> q11.2 including the cat eye chromosome region. Although all subjects presented the same chromosomal abnormality, they showed a wide range of phenotypic differences, even in the 3 patients from the same family. There are no previous reports of CES occurring within 3 patients in the same family. Thus, the clinical and follow-up data presented here contribute to a better delineation of the phenotypes and outcomes of CES patients and will be useful for genetic counseling. Copyright (C) 2012 S. We have developed a method for locating sources of volcanic tremor and applied it to a dataset recorded on Stromboli volcano before and after the onset of the February 27th 2007 effusive eruption. Volcanic tremor has attracted considerable attention by seismologists because of its potential value as a tool for forecasting eruptions and for better understanding the physical processes that occur inside active volcanoes. Commonly used methods to locate volcanic tremor sources are: 1) array techniques, 2) semblance based methods, 3) calculation of wave field amplitude. We have choosen the third approach, using a quantitative modeling of the seismic wavefield. For this purpose, we have calculated the Green Functions (GF) in the frequency domain with the Finite Element Method (FEM). We have used this method because it is well suited to solve elliptic problems, as the elastodynamics in the Fourier domain. The volcanic tremor source is located by determining the source function over a regular grid of points. The best fit point is choosen as the tremor source location. The source inversion is performed in the frequency domain, using only the wavefield amplitudes. We illustrate the method and its validation over a synthetic dataset. We show some preliminary results on the Stromboli dataset, evidencing temporal variations of the volcanic tremor sources.

We carry out a seismic noise study based on array measurements at three sites in the Málaga basin, South Spain, for the further estimation of shear wave velocity profiles. For this purpose, we use both the H/V method and the f–k technique in order to characterize the different materials present in the zone, i.e., Quaternary sediments and Pliocene sedimentary rocks above the bedrock. The H/V analysis shows frequency peaks going from 1 Hz, in areas close to the border of the basin, to 0.3 Hz in places located toward the center of the formation. The f–k analysis allows obtaining the dispersion curves associated with each site and subsequently, estimating the Vs profiles by inversion of the respective group velocities. In this way, the basin basement can be characterized by S-wave velocities greater than 2000 m/s. Regarding the basin fill, it is divided into three layers defined by different wave velocity intervals. The shallowest one is featured by velocities ranging from 150 to 400 m/s and comprises the Quaternary sediments, while velocities going from 550–700 to1200–1600 m/s characterize the two underlying layers composed by Pliocene sediments. Finally, the information provided by the three Vs profiles is integrated in a 2D cross-section of the basin to have a spatial view of its sedimentary structure. The results obtained here, in addition to providing useful information about the infill of the basin near the metropolitan area of Málaga, will be very helpful for future seismic zonation studies in the region.

Background: Changes in brain gene expression are thought to be responsible for the tolerance, dependence, and neurotoxicity produced by chronic alcohol abuse, but there has been no large scale study of gene expression in human alcoholism. Methods: RNA was extracted from postmortem samples of superior frontal cortex of alcoholics and nonalcoholics. Relative levels of RNA were determined by array techniques. We used both cDNA and oligonucleotide microarrays to provide coverage of a large number of genes and to allow cross-validation for those genes represented on both types of arrays. Results: Expression levels were determined for over 4000 genes and 163 of these were found to differ by 40% or more between alcoholics and nonalcoholics. Analysis of these changes revealed a selective reprogramming of gene expression in this brain region, particularly for myelin-related genes which were downregulated in the alcoholic samples. In addition, cell cycle genes and several neuronal genes were changed in expression. Conclusions: These gene expression changes suggest a mechanism for the loss of cerebral white matter in alcoholics as well as alterations that may lead to the neurotoxic actions of ethanol.

This paper presents the formulation and performance analysis of four techniques for detection of a narrowband acoustic source in a shallow range-independent ocean using an acoustic vector sensor (AVS) array. The array signal vector is not known due to the unknown location of the source. Hence all detectors are based on a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) which involves estimation of the array signal vector. One non-parametric and three parametric (model-based) signal estimators are presented. It is shown that there is a strong correlation between the detector performance and the mean-square signal estimation error. Theoretical expressions for probability of false alarm and probability of detection are derived for all the detectors, and the theoretical predictions are compared with simulation results. It is shown that the detection performance of an AVS array with a certain number of sensors is equal to or slightly better than that of a conventional acoustic pressure sensor array with thrice as many sensors.

Methods by which bit level systolic array chips can be made fault tolerant are discussed briefly. Using a simple analysis based on both Poisson and Bose-Einstein statistics authors demonstrate that such techniques can be used to obtain significant yield enhancement. Alternatively, the dimensions of an array can be increased considerably for the same initial (nonfault tolerant) chip yield.

ABSTRACT One of the most important noise causes in our cities is the traffic. The noise generated by the vehicles is not only due to the engine, but there are some other noise sources. Among them the tyre/road noise can be highlighted. Coherence and array based techniques have been used in some research to locate the noise causes and identify the main noise sources. Nevertheless, it is not usual in the literature to find the application of this kind of techniques in the car sector. This Thesis starts taking into account the possibility of using this kind of measurement techniques in cars, to demonstrate their feasability and their quality to evaluate the noise sources under two different conditions: when the car is stopped and when it is in movement. Selective Intensity was chosen as coherence technique, evaluating the coherence between the noise in the driver’s ears and the intensity radiated in different points of the engine. Array based techniques carry out the best results to noise source location. Statistically Optimized Near-field Acoustical Holography (SONAH) is the measurement technique chosen for noise source location and characterization in the engine at low frequency. On the other hand, Beamforming is the technique chosen in the case of medium-high frequency and to characterize the noise sources when the car is in movement. The proposed techniques not only can be used in actual measurements, but also provide a lot of information and are very versatile to noise source characterization.

An optical system which performs the multiplication of binary numbers is described and proof-of-principle experiments are performed. The simultaneous generation of all partial products, optical regrouping of bit products, and optical carry look-ahead addition are novel features of the proposed scheme which takes advantage of the parallel operations capability of optical computers. The proposed processor uses liquid crystal light valves (LCLVs). By space-sharing the LCLVs one such system could function as an array of multipliers. Together with the optical carry look-ahead adders described, this would constitute an optical matrix-vector multiplier.

A commercial non-specific gas sensor array system was evaluated in terms of its capability to monitor the odour abatement performance of a biofiltration system developed for treating emissions from a commercial piggery building. The biofiltration system was a modular system comprising an inlet ducting system, humidifier and closed-bed biofilter. It also included a gravimetric moisture monitoring and water application system for precise control of moisture content of an organic woodchip medium. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the sensor array measurements indicated that the biofilter outlet air was significantly different to both inlet air of the system and post-humidifier air. Data pre-processing techniques including normalising and outlier handling were applied to improve the odour discrimination performance of the non-specific gas sensor array. To develop an odour quantification model using the sensor array responses of the non-specific sensor array, PCA regression, artificial neural network (ANN) and partial least squares (PLS) modelling techniques were applied. The correlation coefficient (r(2)) values of the PCA, ANN, and PLS models were 0.44, 0.62 and 0.79, respectively.

Over the past years, much research on sarcomas based on low-resolution cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic methods has been published, leading to the identification of genetic abnormalities partially underlying the tumourigenesis. Continued progress in the identification of genetic events such as copy number aberrations relies upon adapting the rapidly evolving high-resolution microarray technology, which will eventually provide novel insights into sarcoma biology, and targets for both diagnostics and drug development. The aim of this Thesis was to characterize DNA copy number changes that are involved in the pathogenesis of soft tissue leiomyosarcoma (LMS), dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), osteosarcoma (OS), malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), and uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS) by applying fine resolution array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) technology. Both low- and high-grade LMS tumours showed distinct copy number patterns, in addition to sharing two minimal common regions of gains and losses. Small aberrations were detected by aCGH, which were beyond the resolution of chromosomal comparative genomic hybridization (cCGH). DFSP tumours analysed by aCGH showed gains in 17q, 22q, and 21 additional gained regions, but only one region (22q) with copy number loss. Recurrent amplicons identified in OS by aCGH were 12q11-q15, 8q, 6p12-p21, and 17p. Amplicons 12q and 17p were further characterized in detail. The amplicon at 17p was characterized by aCGH in low- and high-grade LMS, OS, and MFH. In all but one case this amplicon, with minimal common regions of gains at 17p11-p12, started with the distal loss of 17p13-pter. OS and high-grade LMS were grouped together as they showed a complex pattern of copy number gains and amplifications at 17p, whereas MFH and low-grade LMS showed a continuous pattern of copy number gains and amplification at 17p. In addition to the commonly gained and lost regions identified in ULMS by aCGH, various biological processes affected by these copy number changes were also indicated by pathway analysis. The three novel findings obtained in this work were: characterization of amplicon 17p in low- and high-grade LMS and MFH, profiles of DNA copy number changes in LMS, and detection of various pathways affected by copy number changes in ULMS. These studies have not been undertaken previously by aCGH technology, thus this Thesis adds new information regarding DNA copy number changes in sarcomas. In conclusion, the aCGH technique used in this Thesis has provided new insights into the genetics of sarcomas by detecting the precise regions affected by copy number changes and some potential candidate target genes within those regions, which had not been uncovered by previously applied low resolution techniques.

Interrogation techniques for fiber Bragg grating sensor arrays need particular attention in the case of structural health monitoring applications involving dynamic strain measurement. Typically the performance of the sensing system is dependent on both the sensor type and the interrogation method employed. A novel interrogation system is proposed here that consists of different interrogation units for each sensor in the array, each unit comprising of a circulator, chirped grating and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We present an analysis that consists of tracking the spectral changes as the light passes through various elements in the interrogation system. This is expected to help in the optimization of sensor and interrogation elements leading to improved performance of the health monitoring system.

Single crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod array has been used for the fabrication of CdSe/CdS/PbS/ZnO quantum dot sensitized solar cell (QDSSC). The ZnO nanorod array photoanodes are sensitized with consecutive layer of PbS, CdS and CdSe quantum dots by employing simple successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and chemical bath deposition (CBD) techniques. The performances of the QDSSCs are examined in detail using polysulfide electrolyte with copper sulfide (CuS) counter electrode. The combination of two successive layers of PbS with CdSe/CdS/ZnO shows an improved short circuit current density (12.223 mA cm(-2)) with a maximum power to conversion efficiency of 2.352% under 1 sun illumination. This enhancement is mainly attributed due to the better light harvesting ability of the PbS quantum dots and make large accumulation of photo-injected electrons in the conduction band of ZnO, and CdSe/CdS layers lower the recombination of photo-injected electrons with the electrolyte, these are well evidenced with the photovoltaic studies and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Over the past five years, the cost of solar panels has dropped drastically and, in concert, the number of installed modules has risen exponentially. However, solar electricity is still more than twice as expensive as electricity from a natural gas plant. Fortunately, wire array solar cells have emerged as a promising technology for further lowering the cost of solar.
Si wire array solar cells are formed with a unique, low cost growth method and use 100 times less material than conventional Si cells. The wires can be embedded in a transparent, flexible polymer to create a free-standing array that can be rolled up for easy installation in a variety of form factors. Furthermore, by incorporating multijunctions into the wire morphology, higher efficiencies can be achieved while taking advantage of the unique defect relaxation pathways afforded by the 3D wire geometry.
The work in this thesis shepherded Si wires from undoped arrays to flexible, functional large area devices and laid the groundwork for multijunction wire array cells. Fabrication techniques were developed to turn intrinsic Si wires into full p-n junctions and the wires were passivated with a-Si:H and a-SiNx:H. Single wire devices yielded open circuit voltages of 600 mV and efficiencies of 9%. The arrays were then embedded in a polymer and contacted with a transparent, flexible, Ni nanoparticle and Ag nanowire top contact. The contact connected >99% of the wires in parallel and yielded flexible, substrate free solar cells featuring hundreds of thousands of wires.
Building on the success of the Si wire arrays, GaP was epitaxially grown on the material to create heterostructures for photoelectrochemistry. These cells were limited by low absorption in the GaP due to its indirect bandgap, and poor current collection due to a diffusion length of only 80 nm. However, GaAsP on SiGe offers a superior combination of materials, and wire architectures based on these semiconductors were investigated for multijunction arrays. These devices offer potential efficiencies of 34%, as demonstrated through an analytical model and optoelectronic simulations. SiGe and Ge wires were fabricated via chemical-vapor deposition and reactive ion etching. GaAs was then grown on these substrates at the National Renewable Energy Lab and yielded ns lifetime components, as required for achieving high efficiency devices.
