The aqueous phase reforming (APR) of xylitol was studied in a continuous fixed bed reactor over three catalysts: Pt/Al2O3, Pt/TiO2 and Pt-Re/TiO2. The data obtained in the case of the monometallic Pt catalysts was compared to the bimetallic Pt-Re sample. The effect of Re addition on the catalyst stability, activity, product formation and selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was studied. The bimetallic catalyst demonstrated a higher selectivity to alkanes compared to the monometallic samples. The monometallic catalyst was more selective toward hydrogen formation. A plausible reaction scheme explaining differences in selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was proposed and discussed.

A family of tungstated zirconia solid acid catalysts were synthesised via wet impregnation and subsequent thermochemical processing for the transformation of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Acid strength increased with tungsten loading and calcination temperature, associated with stabilisation of tetragonal zirconia. High tungsten dispersions of between 2 and 7 W atoms·nm−2 were obtained in all cases, equating to sub-monolayer coverages. Glucose isomerisation and subsequent dehydration via fructose to HMF increased with W loading and calcination temperature up to 600 °C, indicating that glucose conversion to fructose was favoured over weak Lewis acid and/or base sites associated with the zirconia support, while fructose dehydration and HMF formation was favoured over Brönsted acidic WOx clusters. Aqueous phase reforming of steam exploded rice straw hydrolysate and condensate was explored heterogeneously for the first time over a 10 wt% WZ catalyst, resulting in excellent HMF yields as high as 15% under mild reaction conditions.

We demonstrate aqueous phase biosynthesis of phase-pure metallic copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) using a silver resistant bacterium Morganella morganii. This is particularly important considering that there has been no report that demonstrates biosynthesis and stabilization of pure copper nanoparticles in the aqueous phase. Electrochemical analysis of bacterial cells exposed to Cu2+ ions provides new insights into the mechanistic aspect of Cu2+ ion reduction within the bacterial cell and indicates a strong link between the silver and copper resistance machinery of bacteria in the context of metal ion reduction. The outcomes of this study take us a step closer towards designing rational strategies for biosynthesis of different metal nanoparticles using microorganisms.

ZSM-5 zeolite in H+ form with an average pore size of 1.2 nm was used for aqueous phase dehydration of xylose to furfural at low temperatures;, that is, from 413 to 493 K. The selectivity in furfural increased with the temperature to a value of 473 K. Beyond this temperature, condensation reactions were significant and facilitated by the intrinsic structure of ZSM-5. A reaction mechanism that included isomerization of xylose to lyxose, dehydration of lyxose and xylose to furfural, fragmentation of furfural to organic acids, oligomerization of furfural to bi- and tridimensional furilic species, and complete dehydration of organic acids to carbonaceous deposits was developed, and the associated kinetic parameters were estimated. The rate of furfural production was found to be more sensitive to temperature than the rates of side reactions, with an estimated activation energy of 32.1 kcal/mol. This value correlated well with data in the literature obtained by homogeneous catalytic dehydration.

A family of bulk and SBA-15 supported peroxo niobic acid sols were prepared by peptisation of niobic acid precipitates with H2O2 as heterogeneous catalysts for aqueous phase glucose and fructose conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). Niobic acid nanoparticles possess a high density of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, conferring good activity towards glucose and fructose conversion, albeit with modest 5-HMF yields under mild reaction conditions (100 °C). Thermally-induced niobia crystallisation suppresses solid acidity and activity. Nanoparticulate niobic acid dispersed over SBA-15 exhibits pure Brønsted acidity and an enhanced Turnover Frequency for fructose dehydration.

Most of the hydrogen production processes are designed for large-scale industrial uses and are not suitable for a compact hydrogen device to be used in systems like solid polymer fuel cells. Integrating the reaction step, the gas purification and the heat supply can lead to small-scale hydrogen production systems. The aim of this research is to study the influence of several reaction parameters on hydrogen production using liquid phase reforming of sugar solution over Pt, Pd, and Ni supported on nanostructured supports. It was found that the desired catalytic pathway for H-2 production involves cleavage of C-C, C-H and O-H bonds that adsorb on the catalyst surface. Thus a good catalyst for production of H2 by liquid-phase reforming must facilitate C-C bond cleavage and promote removal of adsorbed CO species by the water-gas shift reaction, but the catalyst must not facilitate C-O bond cleavage and hydrogenation of CO or CO2. Apart from studying various catalysts, a commercial Pt/gamma-alumina catalyst was used to study the effect of temperature at three different temperatures of 458, 473 and 493 K. Some of the spent catalysts were characterised using TGA, SEM and XRD to study coke deposition. The amorphous and organised form of coke was found on the surface of the catalyst. The oxidation of aqueous sulfur dioxide in the presence of polymer-supported copper(II) catalyst is also accompanied by homogeneous oxidation of aqueous sulfur dioxide catalyzed by leached copper(II) ions. Aqueous phase oxidation of sulfur dioxide of low concentrations by oxygen in the presence of dissolved copper(II) has therefore been studied. The solubility of SO2 in aqueous solutions is not affected by the concentration of copper(II) in the solution. In the oxidation reaction, only HSO3- is the reactive S(IV) species. Based on this observation a rate model which also incorporates the effect of sulfuric acid on the solubility of SO2 is developed. The rate model includes a power-law type term for the rate of homogeneous phase reaction obtained from a proposed free-radical chain mechanism for the oxidation. Experiments are conducted at various levels of concentrations of SO2 and O-2 in the gas phase and Cu(II) in the liquid phase. The observed orders are one in each of O-2, Cu(II) and HSO3-. This suggests a first-order termination of the free radicals of bisulfite ions.
