Moving objects database systems are the most challenging sub-category among Spatio-Temporal database systems. A database system that updates in real-time the location information of GPS-equipped moving vehicles has to meet even stricter requirements. Currently existing data storage models and indexing mechanisms work well only when the number of moving objects in the system is relatively small. This dissertation research aimed at the real-time tracking and history retrieval of massive numbers of vehicles moving on road networks. A total solution has been provided for the real-time update of the vehicles' location and motion information, range queries on current and history data, and prediction of vehicles' movement in the near future. ^ To achieve these goals, a new approach called Segmented Time Associated to Partitioned Space (STAPS) was first proposed in this dissertation for building and manipulating the indexing structures for moving objects databases. ^ Applying the STAPS approach, an indexing structure of associating a time interval tree to each road segment was developed for real-time database systems of vehicles moving on road networks. The indexing structure uses affordable storage to support real-time data updates and efficient query processing. The data update and query processing performance it provides is consistent without restrictions such as a time window or assuming linear moving trajectories. ^ An application system design based on distributed system architecture with centralized organization was developed to maximally support the proposed data and indexing structures. The suggested system architecture is highly scalable and flexible. Finally, based on a real-world application model of vehicles moving in region-wide, main issues on the implementation of such a system were addressed. ^

Citriculture normally uses high application volumes in pesticide solutions (of 2.000 to 5.000 L ha(-1)) to control pests and diseases that affect the crop, which generates an increase in operational costs. For this reason, diverse systems of application are being developed to reduce application volumes and improve the uniformity of pesticide deposition. The goal of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of two application systems of pesticides in citrus trees. One system used a prototype for terrestrial application with rotary disc atomizers that are widely used in agricultural aviation, and the other system used hollow cone tip hydraulics. For the treatment of the trees the insecticide Metidation was used at the dose of 180 gr per hectare. To study the droplet spectrum, water-sensitive papers were installed at different positions in the trees canopy, and for the study of insecticide deposition leaves of the treated plants were collected. The water-sensitive papers were collected and analyzed using a computerized image analysis system (e-Sprinkle, EMBRAPA, Sao Paulo, Brazil), and the leaves analyzed by the technique of gas chromatography. Pesticide deposition was similar in both application system, although the solution volume used by the application system equipped with rotary disc atomizers was one quarter of the volume used by the application system equipped with hydraulic tips, reducing considerably the cost of the phytosanitary treatments.

Aluminum toxicity is one of the major soil factors limiting root growth in acidic soils. Because of the increase in organic matter content in the upper few centimeters of soils under no-till systems (NTS), most Al in soil solution may be complexed to dissolved organic C (DOC), thus decreasing its bioavailability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface liming on Al speciation in soil solution in Brazilian sites under NTS. Field experiments were performed in two regions with contrasting climates and levels of soil acidity: Rondonopolis, Mato Grosso State, on a Rhodic Haplustox, and Ponta Grossa, Parana State, on a Typic Hapludox. The treatments consisted of a control and three lime rates, surface applied to raise the base saturation to 50, 70, and 90%. Soil solution was obtained at soil water equilibrium (1:1 w/w soil/water ratio). The effects of surface liming on soil chemical attributes and on the composition of the soil solution were dependent on weather conditions, time under NTS, and soil weathering. Most Al in soil solution was complexed to DOC, representing about 70 to 80% of the total Al at pH <5.0, and about 30 to 4096 at pH >5.0. Under pH 5.5, the results were closely correlated with the solubility line for amorphous Al. Organic complexes may control Al(3+) release into soil solution at pH <5.5. Results suggest that in areas under NTS for a long period of time, Al toxicity might decrease due to its complexation to high-molecular-weight organic compounds.

A constante evolução da tecnologia obriga a que o mundo empresarial tenha que alocar esforços para se manter actualizado. Os equipamentos tecnológicos que se encontram actualmente na vanguarda da tecnologia são os dispositivos móveis, que cada vez mais nos rodeiam e acompanham com o intuito de nos facilitar a execução de tarefas rotineiras. O ramo de construção e obras públicas em particular é um sector que obriga a que os seus trabalhadores estejam constantemente em movimento, e que muito têm a ganhar com a utilização de ferramentas de trabalho em equipamentos móveis. Neste projecto pretendeu-se identificar qual o sistema operativo para dispositivos móveis que melhor se enquadra com as necessidades empresariais, assim como quais os mecanismos de comunicação inter-máquinas que melhor se enquadram com o cenário em estudo. Foi então desenvolvida uma plataforma para dispositivos móveis que permite agilizar a execução de processos que normalmente são morosos ou que obrigam à utilização do computador em locais menos próprios, nomeadamente o ambiente de obra. A solução proposta e implementada envolve uma aplicação modular quer permita a fácil inserção e remoção de módulos. Foram também realizados os estudos e implementações de quatro módulos, designadamente: auto-afectação, conferência documental, fornecedores e presenças em obra. Concluído este projecto, ficam reunidas as condições para o fácil desenvolvimento de novos módulos, visando inovação e optimização dos processos de trabalho da empresa.

Pretende-se, na presente dissertação, descrever o trabalho desenvolvido e os conhecimentos adquiridos no decorrer do projeto “iCOPE”, realizado no âmbito do curso de Mestrado em Engenharia de Computação e Instrumentação Médica. O projeto consistiu no desenvolvimento de um sistema aplicacional para o auxílio à prestação de serviços e cuidados de saúde a pacientes com doenças psicóticas tanto através de ferramentas de autogestão, como por funcionalidades que permitirão a um terapeuta monitorizar as ocorrências comunicadas pelos respetivos pacientes atribuídos. As tarefas à responsabilidade do autor desta dissertação compreenderam o levantamento e especificação de requisitos funcionais, o desenvolvimento das funcionalidades e interfaces de gestão de utilizadores e administração do sistema, o desenvolvimento das funcionalidades e interfaces para utilização pelos terapeutas e a criação de ferramentas para a instalação do servidor aplicacional central, existindo ainda cooperação no desenvolvimento de funcionalidades e interfaces para utilização pelos pacientes, nomeadamente ao nível da modelização da base de dados e na realização de testes e deteção de erros. Os resultados da avaliação das interfaces desenvolvidas, obtidos por meio da análise de respostas dadas por um grupo de potenciais utilizadores a um inquérito de usabilidade anónimo, demonstraram que estes estão satisfeitos com a solução implementada, havendo, no entanto, margem para futuros melhoramentos e incremento de funcionalidades.

Invasive plant species threaten natural areas by reducing biodiversity and altering ecosystem functions. They also impact agriculture by reducing crop and livestock productivity. Millions of dollars are spent on invasive species control each year, and traditionally, herbicides are used to manage invasive species. Herbicides have human and environmental health risks associated with them; therefore, it is essential that land managers and stakeholders attempt to reduce these risks by utilizing the principles of integrated weed management. Integrated weed management is a practice that incorporates a variety of measures and focuses on the ecology of the invasive plant to manage it. Roadways are high risk areas that have high incidence of invasive species. Roadways act as conduits for invasive species spread and are ideal harborages for population growth; therefore, roadways should be a primary target for invasive species control. There are four stages in the invasion process which an invasive species must overcome: transport, establishment, spread, and impact. The aim of this dissertation was to focus on these four stages and examine the mechanisms underlying the progression from one stage to the next, while also developing integrated weed management strategies. The target species were Phragmites australis, common reed, and Cisrium arvense, Canada thistle. The transport and establishment risks of P. australis can be reduced by removing rhizome fragments from soil when roadside maintenance is performed. The establishment and spread of C. arvense can be reduced by planting particular resistant species, e.g. Heterotheca villosa, especially those that can reduce light transmittance to the soil. Finally, the spread and impact of C. arvense can be mitigated on roadsides through the use of the herbicide aminopyralid. The risks associated with herbicide drift produced by application equipment can be reduced by using the Wet-Blade herbicide application system.

This paper presents a compact embedded fuzzy system for three-phase induction-motor scalar speed control. The control strategy consists in keeping constant the voltage-frequency ratio of the induction-motor supply source. A fuzzy-control system is built on a digital signal processor, which uses speed error and speed-error variation to change both the fundamental voltage amplitude and frequency of a sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation inverter. An alternative optimized method for embedded fuzzy-system design is also proposed. The controller performance, in relation to reference and load-torque variations, is evaluated by experimental results. A comparative analysis with conventional proportional-integral controller is also achieved.

We address here aspects of the implementation of a memory evolutive system (MES), based on the model proposed by A. Ehresmann and J. Vanbremeersch (2007), by means of a simulated network of spiking neurons with time dependent plasticity. We point out the advantages and challenges of applying category theory for the representation of cognition, by using the MES architecture. Then we discuss the issues concerning the minimum requirements that an artificial neural network (ANN) should fulfill in order that it would be capable of expressing the categories and mappings between them, underlying the MES. We conclude that a pulsed ANN based on Izhikevich`s formal neuron with STDP (spike time-dependent plasticity) has sufficient dynamical properties to achieve these requirements, provided it can cope with the topological requirements. Finally, we present some perspectives of future research concerning the proposed ANN topology.

Much information on flavonoid content of Brazilian foods has already been obtained; however, this information is spread in scientific publications and non-published data. The objectives of this work were to compile and evaluate the quality of national flavonoid data according to the United States Department of Agriculture`s Data Quality Evaluation System (USDA-DQES) with few modifications, for future dissemination in the TBCA-USP (Brazilian Food Composition Database). For the compilation, the most abundant compounds in the flavonoid subclasses were considered (flavonols, flavones, isoflavones, flavanones, flavan-3-ols, and anthocyanidins) and the analysis of the compounds by HPLC was adopted as criteria for data inclusion. The evaluation system considers five categories, and the maximum score assigned to each category is 20. For each data, a confidence code (CC) was attributed (A, B, C and D), indicating the quality and reliability of the information. Flavonoid data (773) present in 197 Brazilian foods were evaluated. The CC ""C"" (as average) was attributed to 99% of the data and ""B"" (above average) to 1%. The main categories assigned low average scores were: number of samples; sampling plan and analytical quality control (average scores 2, 5 and 4, respectively). The analytical method category received an average score of 9. The category assigned the highest score was the sample handling (20 average). These results show that researchers need to be conscious about the importance of the number and plan of evaluated samples and the complete description and documentation of all the processes of methodology execution and analytical quality control.
