ResumoThe main idea of this work is based on the analysis of the electric torque through the acting of the PS in the power system, provided of a control for the compensation degree (PSC). A linear model of the single machine-infinite bus system is used with a PS installed (SMIB/PS system). The variable that represents the presence of PS in the net is associated to the phase displacement introduced in the terminal voltage of the synchronous machine by PS. For the input signals of the PSC are evaluated variations of the angular speed of the rotor, the current magnitude and the active power through the line where the PS is located. The simulations are accomplished to analyze the influence of the PS in the torque formation (synchronizing and damping), of the SMIB/PS system. The analysis are developed in the time and frequency domain.

Principal component analysis phase shifting (PCA) is a useful tool for fringe pattern demodulation in phase shifting interferometry. The PCA has no restrictions on background intensity or fringe modulation, and it is a self-calibrating phase sampling algorithm (PSA). Moreover, the technique is well suited for analyzing arbitrary sets of phase-shifted interferograms due to its low computational cost. In this work, we have adapted the standard phase shifting algorithm based on the PCA to the particular case of photoelastic fringe patterns. Compared with conventional PSAs used in photoelasticity, the PCA method does not need calibrated phase steps and, given that it can deal with an arbitrary number of images, it presents good noise rejection properties, even for complicated cases such as low order isochromatic photoelastic patterns. © 2016 Optical Society of America.

This paper describes a path-following phase unwrapping algorithm and a phase unwrapping algorithm based on discrete cosine transform (DCT) which accelerates the Computation and suppresses the propagation of noise. Through analysis of fringe pattern with serious noises simulated in mathematic model, we make a contrast between path-following algorithm and DCT algorithm. The advantages and disadvantages or analytical fringe pattern are also given through comparison of two algorithms. Three-dimensional experimental results have been given to prove the validity of these algorithms. Despite DCT phase unwrapping technique robustness and speed in some cases, it cannot be unwrapping inconsistencies phase. The path-following algorithm can be used in automation analysis of fringe patterns with little influence of noise. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

This work presents a methodology to analyze transient stability (first oscillation) of electric energy systems, using a neural network based on ART architecture (adaptive resonance theory), named fuzzy ART-ARTMAP neural network for real time applications. The security margin is used as a stability analysis criterion, considering three-phase short circuit faults with a transmission line outage. The neural network operation consists of two fundamental phases: the training and the analysis. The training phase needs a great quantity of processing for the realization, while the analysis phase is effectuated almost without computation effort. This is, therefore the principal purpose to use neural networks for solving complex problems that need fast solutions, as the applications in real time. The ART neural networks have as primordial characteristics the plasticity and the stability, which are essential qualities to the training execution and to an efficient analysis. The fuzzy ART-ARTMAP neural network is proposed seeking a superior performance, in terms of precision and speed, when compared to conventional ARTMAP, and much more when compared to the neural networks that use the training by backpropagation algorithm, which is a benchmark in neural network area. MEGAGEO - Moving megaliths in the Neolithic is a project that intends to find the provenience of lithic materials in the construction of tombs. A multidisciplinary approach is carried out, with researchers from several of the knowledge fields involved. This work presents a spatial data warehouse specially developed for this project that comprises information from national archaeological databases, geographic and geological information and new geochemical and petrographic data obtained during the project. The use of the spatial data warehouse proved to be essential in the data analysis phase of the project. The Redondo Area is presented as a case study for the application of the spatial data warehouse to analyze the relations between geochemistry, geology and the tombs in this area.

With the advent of Service Oriented Architecture, Web Services have gained tremendous popularity. Due to the availability of a large number of Web services, finding an appropriate Web service according to the requirement of the user is a challenge. This warrants the need to establish an effective and reliable process of Web service discovery. A considerable body of research has emerged to develop methods to improve the accuracy of Web service discovery to match the best service. The process of Web service discovery results in suggesting many individual services that partially fulfil the user’s interest. By considering the semantic relationships of words used in describing the services as well as the use of input and output parameters can lead to accurate Web service discovery. Appropriate linking of individual matched services should fully satisfy the requirements which the user is looking for. This research proposes to integrate a semantic model and a data mining technique to enhance the accuracy of Web service discovery. A novel three-phase Web service discovery methodology has been proposed. The first phase performs match-making to find semantically similar Web services for a user query. In order to perform semantic analysis on the content present in the Web service description language document, the support-based latent semantic kernel is constructed using an innovative concept of binning and merging on the large quantity of text documents covering diverse areas of domain of knowledge. The use of a generic latent semantic kernel constructed with a large number of terms helps to find the hidden meaning of the query terms which otherwise could not be found. Sometimes a single Web service is unable to fully satisfy the requirement of the user. In such cases, a composition of multiple inter-related Web services is presented to the user. The task of checking the possibility of linking multiple Web services is done in the second phase. Once the feasibility of linking Web services is checked, the objective is to provide the user with the best composition of Web services. In the link analysis phase, the Web services are modelled as nodes of a graph and an allpair shortest-path algorithm is applied to find the optimum path at the minimum cost for traversal. The third phase which is the system integration, integrates the results from the preceding two phases by using an original fusion algorithm in the fusion engine. Finally, the recommendation engine which is an integral part of the system integration phase makes the final recommendations including individual and composite Web services to the user. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, extensive experimentation has been performed. Results of the proposed support-based semantic kernel method of Web service discovery are compared with the results of the standard keyword-based information-retrieval method and a clustering-based machine-learning method of Web service discovery. The proposed method outperforms both information-retrieval and machine-learning based methods. Experimental results and statistical analysis also show that the best Web services compositions are obtained by considering 10 to 15 Web services that are found in phase-I for linking. Empirical results also ascertain that the fusion engine boosts the accuracy of Web service discovery by combining the inputs from both the semantic analysis (phase-I) and the link analysis (phase-II) in a systematic fashion. Overall, the accuracy of Web service discovery with the proposed method shows a significant improvement over traditional discovery methods.

Background Alcohol expectancies likely play a role in people’s perceptions of alcohol-involved sexual violence. However, no appropriate measure exists to examine this link comprehensively. Objective The aim of this research was to develop an alcohol expectancy measure which captures young adults’ beliefs about alcohol’s role in sexual aggression and victimization. Method Two cross-sectional samples of young Australian adults (18–25 years) were recruited for scale development (Phase 1) and scale validation (Phase 2). In Phase 1, participants (N = 201; 38.3% males) completed an online survey with an initial pool of alcohol expectancy items stated in terms of three targets (self, men, women) to identify the scale’s factor structure and most effective items. A revised alcohol expectancy scale was then administered online to 322 young adults (39.6% males) in Phase 2. To assess the predictive, convergent, and discriminant validity of the scale, participants also completed established measures of personality, social desirability, alcohol use, general and context-specific alcohol expectancies, and impulsiveness. Results Principal axis factoring (Phase 1) and confirmatory factor analysis (Phase 2) resulted in a target-equivalent five-factor structure for the final 66-item Drinking Expectancy Sexual Vulnerabilities Questionnaire (DESV-Q). The factors were labeled: - (1) Sexual Coercion - (2) Sexual Vulnerability - (3) Confidence - (4) Self-Centeredness - (5) Negative Cognitive and Behavioral Changes The measure demonstrated effective items, high internal consistency, and satisfactory predictive, convergent, and discriminant validity. Conclusions The DESV-Q is a purpose-specific instrument that could be used in future research to elucidate people’s attributions for alcohol-involved sexual aggression and victimization.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for measuring the coma aberrations of lithographic projection optics based on relative image displacements at multiple illumination settings. The measurement accuracy of coma can be improved because the phase-shifting gratings are more sensitive to the aberrations than the binary gratings used in the TAMIS technique, and the impact of distortion on displacements of aerial image can be eliminated when the relative image displacements are measured. The PROLITH simulation results show that, the measurement accuracy of coma increases by more than 25% under conventional illumination, and the measurement accuracy of primary coma increases by more than 20% under annular illumination, compared with the TAMIS technique. We consider the problem of variable selection in regression modeling in high-dimensional spaces where there is known structure among the covariates. This is an unconventional variable selection problem for two reasons: (1) The dimension of the covariate space is comparable, and often much larger, than the number of subjects in the study, and (2) the covariate space is highly structured, and in some cases it is desirable to incorporate this structural information in to the model building process. We approach this problem through the Bayesian variable selection framework, where we assume that the covariates lie on an undirected graph and formulate an Ising prior on the model space for incorporating structural information. Certain computational and statistical problems arise that are unique to such high-dimensional, structured settings, the most interesting being the phenomenon of phase transitions. We propose theoretical and computational schemes to mitigate these problems. We illustrate our methods on two different graph structures: the linear chain and the regular graph of degree k. Finally, we use our methods to study a specific application in genomics: the modeling of transcription factor binding sites in DNA sequences. © 2010 American Statistical Association.

Background
Despite the recognized importance of end-of-life (EOL) communication between patients and physicians, the extent and quality of such communication is lacking.

Objective
We sought to understand patient perspectives on physician behaviours during EOL communication.

Design
In this mixed methods study, we conducted quantitative and qualitative strands and then merged data sets during a mixed methods analysis phase. In the quantitative strand, we used the quality of communication tool (QOC) to measure physician behaviours that predict global rating of satisfaction in EOL communication skills, while in the qualitative strand we conducted semi-structured interviews. During the mixed methods analysis, we compared and contrasted qualitative and quantitative data.

Setting and Participants
Seriously ill inpatients at three tertiary care hospitals in Canada.

Results
We found convergence between qualitative and quantitative strands: patients desire candid information from their physician and a sense of familiarity. The quantitative results (n = 132) suggest a paucity of certain EOL communication behaviours in this seriously ill population with a limited prognosis. The qualitative findings (n = 16) suggest that at times, physicians did not engage in EOL communication despite patient readiness, while sometimes this may represent an appropriate deferral after assessment of a patient's lack of readiness.

Conclusions
Avoidance of certain EOL topics may not always be a failure if it is a result of an assessment of lack of patient readiness. This has implications for future tool development: a measure could be built in to assess whether physician behaviours align with patient readiness.

Nos últimos anos tem-se verificado a constante evolução dos mercados em plataformas na Internet como forma de melhoria não só dos serviços prestados, mas também para o aumento de vendas de produtos e respetiva internacionalização dos mesmos. Este aumento da procura por este tipo de softwares, assim como a constante evolução e atualização dos mesmos tem contribuído para que estas aplicações evoluam em termos de funcionalidades e complexidade. Isto contribui cada vez para a dificuldade de formar equipas capazes de manter e desenvolver estes sistemas sem que comprometa em grandes custos para as organizações. Neste sentido surgiram diversas ferramentas que permitem criar soluções pré desenvolvidas de aplicações na Internet denominadas de "E-commerce applications". Estas plataformas, apesar do utilizador não ter obrigatoriamente que deter conhecimentos de programação para proceder à sua instalação, são bastante restritas tanto aos serviços que podem ser usados, e na sua escalabilidade, visto que normalmente correm em servidores específicos e por vezes as configurações necessárias para instalação tornam-se bastante complexas de ser efetuadas. Pretende-se no âmbito desta dissertação de mestrado propor um modelo de uma arquitetura de um sistema baseado em mecanismos MDA para a área de retalho, particularmente em ambientes de e-commerce. Serão inicialmente sistematizados os principais tipos de ecommerce numa perspetiva de evolução histórica. Será igualmente enquadrado o MDA no desenvolvimento de um sistema de e-commerce. Neste sentido, serão equacionadas as diferenças entre o modelo típico de desenvolvimento de software e o desenvolvimento de software orientado pelas metodologias do MDA. No processo de especificação e desenvolvimento do modelo proposto será realizada uma análise de requisitos, assim como, a proposta do modelo da arquitetura de um sistema baseado em mecanismos MDA, tendo como orientação os requisitos e arquitetura definida na fase de análise. Finalmente no sentido de analisar o resultado esperado para um sistema orientado por metodologias definidas por MDA, serão realizado alguns testes no sistema desenvolvido de forma a analisar o seu desempenho e validar a sua adequabilidade no âmbito do processo de desenvolvimento de sistemas e-commerce

Environ 2-3% d’enfants avec convulsions fébriles (CF) développent une épilepsie, mais les outils cliniques existants ne permettent pas d’identifier les enfants susceptibles de développer une épilepsie post-convulsion fébrile. Des études ont mis en évidence des anomalies d’EEG quantifiée, et plus particulièrement en réponse à la stimulation lumineuse intermittente (SLI), chez des patients épileptiques. Aucune étude n’a analysé ces paramètres chez l’enfant avec CF et il importe de déterminer s’ils sont utiles pour évaluer le pronostic des CF. Les objectifs de ce programme de recherche étaient d’identifier, d’une part, des facteurs de risque cliniques qui déterminent le développement de l’épilepsie après des CF et, d’autre part, des marqueurs électrophysiologiques quantitatifs qui différencieraient les enfants avec CF des témoins et pourraient aider à évaluer leur pronostic. Afin de répondre à notre premier objectif, nous avons analysé les dossiers de 482 enfants avec CF, âgés de 3 mois à 6 ans. En utilisant des statistiques de survie, nous avons décrit les facteurs de risque pour développer une épilepsie partielle (antécédents prénataux, retard de développement, CF prolongées et focales) et généralisée (antécédents familiaux d’épilepsie, CF récurrentes et après l’âge de 4 ans). De plus, nous avons identifié trois phénotypes cliniques distincts ayant un pronostic différent : (i) CF simples avec des antécédents familiaux de CF et sans risque d’épilepsie ultérieure; (ii) CF récurrentes avec des antécédents familiaux d’épilepsie et un risque d’épilepsie généralisée; (iii) CF focales avec des antécédents familiaux d’épilepsie et un risque d’épilepsie partielle. Afin de répondre à notre deuxième objectif, nous avons d’abord analysé les potentiels visuels steady-state (PEVSS) évoqués par la SLI (5, 7,5, 10 et 12,5 Hz) en fonction de l’âge. Le tracé EEG de haute densité (128 canaux) a été enregistré chez 61 enfants âgés entre 6 mois et 16 ans et 8 adultes normaux. Nous rapportons un développement topographique différent de l’alignement de phase des composantes des PEVSS de basses (5-15 Hz) et de hautes (30-50 Hz) fréquences. Ainsi, l’alignement de phase des composantes de basses fréquences augmente en fonction de l’âge seulement au niveau des régions occipitale et frontale. Par contre, les composantes de hautes fréquences augmentent au niveau de toutes les régions cérébrales. Puis, en utilisant cette même méthodologie, nous avons investigué si les enfants avec CF présentent des anomalies des composantes gamma (50-100 Hz) des PEVSS auprès de 12 cas de CF, 5 frères et sœurs des enfants avec CF et 15 témoins entre 6 mois et 3 ans. Nous montrons une augmentation de la magnitude et de l’alignement de phase des composantes gamma des PEVSS chez les enfants avec CF comparés au groupe témoin et à la fratrie. Ces travaux ont permis d’identifier des phénotypes électro-cliniques d’intérêt qui différencient les enfants avec CF des enfants témoins et de leur fratrie. L’étape suivante sera de vérifier s’il y a une association entre les anomalies retrouvées, la présentation clinique et le pronostic des CF. Cela pourrait éventuellement aider à identifier les enfants à haut risque de développer une épilepsie et permettre l’institution d’un traitement neuroprotecteur précoce.
