In this paper, we prove that infinite-dimensional vector spaces of α-dense curves are generated by means of the functional equations f(x)+f(2x)+⋯+f(nx)=0, with n≥2, which are related to the partial sums of the Riemann zeta function. These curves α-densify a large class of compact sets of the plane for arbitrary small α, extending the known result that this holds for the cases n=2,3. Finally, we prove the existence of a family of solutions of such functional equation which has the property of quadrature in the compact that densifies, that is, the product of the length of the curve by the nth power of the density approaches the Jordan content of the compact set which the curve densifies.

We obtained new Fabry-Perot data cubes and derived velocity fields, monochromatic, and velocity dispersion maps for 28 galaxies in the Hickson compact groups 37, 40, 47, 49, 54, 56, 68, 79, and 93. We also derived rotation curves for 9 of the studied galaxies, 6 of which are strongly asymmetric. Combining these new data with previously published 2D kinematic maps of compact group galaxies, we investigated the differences between the kinematic and morphological position angles for a sample of 46 galaxies. We find that one third of the unbarred compact group galaxies have position angle misalignments between the stellar and gaseous components. This and the asymmetric rotation curves are clear signatures of kinematic perturbations, probably because of interactions among compact group galaxies. A comparison between the B-band Tully-Fisher relation for compact group galaxies and for the GHASP field-galaxy sample shows that, despite the high fraction of compact group galaxies with asymmetric rotation curves, these lay on the TF relation defined by galaxies in less dense environments, although with more scatter. This agrees with previous results, but now confirmed for a larger sample of 41 galaxies. We confirm the tendency for compact group galaxies at the low-mass end of the Tully-Fisher relation (HCG 49b, 89d, 96c, 96d, and 100c) to have either a magnitude that is too bright for its mass (suggesting brightening by star formation) and/or a low maximum rotational velocity for its luminosity (suggesting tidal stripping). These galaxies are outside the Tully Fisher relation at the 1 sigma level, even when the minimum acceptable values of inclinations are used to compute their maximum velocities. Including such galaxies with nu < 100 km s(-1) in the determination of the zero point and slope of the compact group B-band Tully-Fisher relation would strongly change the fit, making it different from the relation for field galaxies, which has to be kept in mind when studying scaling relations of interacting galaxies, especially at high redshifts.

Aims. We report the discovery of CoRoT-8b, a dense small Saturn-class exoplanet that orbits a K1 dwarf in 6.2 days, and we derive its orbital parameters, mass, and radius. Methods. We analyzed two complementary data sets: the photometric transit curve of CoRoT-8b as measured by CoRoT and the radial velocity curve of CoRoT-8 as measured by the HARPS spectrometer**. Results. We find that CoRoT-8b is on a circular orbit with a semi-major axis of 0.063 +/- 0.001 AU. It has a radius of 0.57 +/- 0.02 R(J), a mass of 0.22 +/- 0.03 M(J), and therefore a mean density of 1.6 +/- 0.1 g cm(-3). Conclusions. With 67% of the size of Saturn and 72% of its mass, CoRoT-8b has a density comparable to that of Neptune (1.76 g cm(-3)). We estimate its content in heavy elements to be 47-63 M(circle plus), and the mass of its hydrogen-helium envelope to be 7-23 M(circle plus). At 0.063 AU, the thermal loss of hydrogen of CoRoT-8b should be no more than similar to 0.1% over an assumed integrated lifetime of 3 Ga.

Context. Emission lines formed in decretion disks of Be stars often undergo long-term cyclic variations, especially in the violet-to-red (V/R) ratio of their primary components. The underlying structural and dynamical variations of the disks are only partly understood. From observations of the bright Be-shell star. Tau, the possibly broadest and longest data set illustrating the prototype of this behaviour was compiled from our own and archival observations. It comprises optical and infrared spectra, broad-band polarimetry, and interferometric observations. Aims. The dense, long-time monitoring permits a better separation of repetitive and ephemeral variations. The broad wavelength coverage includes lines formed under different physical conditions, i.e. different locations in the disk, so that the dynamics can be probed throughout much of the disk. Polarimetry and interferometry constrain the spatial structure. All together, the objective is a better understand the dynamics and life cycle of decretion disks. Methods. Standard methods of data acquisition, reduction, and analysis were applied. Results. From 3 V/R cycles between 1997 and 2008, a mean cycle length in Ha of 1400-1430 days was derived. After each minimum in V/R, the shell absorption weakens and splits into two components, leading to 3 emission peaks. This phase may make the strongest contribution to the variability in cycle length. There is no obvious connection between the V/R cycle and the 133-day orbital period of the not otherwise detected companion. V/R curves of different lines are shifted in phase. Lines formed on average closer to the central star are ahead of the others. The shell absorption lines fall into 2 categories differing in line width, ionization/excitation potential, and variability of the equivalent width. They seem to form in separate regions of the disk, probably crossing the line of sight at different times. The interferometry has resolved the continuum and the line emission in Br gamma and HeI 2.06. The phasing of the Br gamma emission shows that the photocenter of the line-emitting region lies within the plane of the disk but is offset from the continuum source. The plane of the disk is constant throughout the observed V/R cycles. The observations lay the foundation for the fully self-consistent, one-armed, disk-oscillation model developed in Paper II.

Alpha prime formation leads to material embrittlement and deterioration of corrosion resistance. In the present study, the mechanical and corrosion behavior of super duplex stainless steel UNS S32520 aged at 475 degrees C from 0.5 h to 1,032 h was evaluated using microhardness measurements, Charpy impact tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic polarization curves. The sensibility of these tests to the effects of alpha prime phase was investigated. The microhardness test showed a gradual increase in hardness with aging time, whereas the impact tests revealed losses of about 80% in the energy absorption capacity for the material aged for 12 h in comparison with the solution-annealed samples. The most responsive analysis was the impact test, which indirectly revealed the presence of this deleterious phase in samples aged for 0.5 h. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization tests were not highly sensitive to the alpha prime phase unless these are present in large amounts in the stainless steel.

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method is presented which allows the simultaneous determination of the plasma concentrations of the levo-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM) and of its active metabolites (NorLAAM and DiNorLAAM), after derivatization with the reagent trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA). No interferences from endogenous compounds were observed following the extraction of plasma samples from 11 different human subjects. The standard curves were linear over a working range of 5-200ng/ml for the three compounds. Recoveries measured at three concentrations ranged from 47 to 67% for LAAM, from 50 to 69% for NorLAAM and from 28 to 50% for DiNorLAAM. Intra- and interday coefficients of variation determined at three concentrations ranged from 5 to 13% for LAAM, from 3 to 9% for NorLAAM and from 5 to 13% for DiNorLAAM. The limits of quantitation of the method were found to be 4ng/ml for the three compounds. No interference was noted from methadone. This sensitive and specific analytical method could be useful for assessing the in vivo relationship between LAAM's blood levels, clinical efficacy and/or cardiotoxicity

Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) has been implicated in the regulation of a range of fundamental biological processes such as cell survival, growth, differentiation, and adhesion. In platelets ILK associates with beta 1- and beta 3-containing integrins, which are of paramount importance for the function of platelets. Upon stimulation of platelets this association with the integrins is increased and ILK kinase activity is up-regulated, suggesting that ILK may be important for the coordination of platelet responses. In this study a conditional knockout mouse model was developed to examine the role of ILK in platelets. The ILK-deficient mice showed an increased bleeding time and volume, and despite normal ultrastructure the function of ILK-deficient platelets was decreased significantly. This included reduced aggregation, fibrinogen binding, and thrombus formation under arterial flow conditions. Furthermore, although early collagen stimulated signaling such as PLC gamma 2 phosphorylation and calcium mobilization were unaffected in ILK-deficient platelets, a selective defect in alpha-granule, but not dense-granule, secretion was observed. These results indicate that as well as involvement in the control of integrin affinity, ILK is required for alpha-granule secretion and therefore may play a central role in the regulation of platelet function. Previous studies comparing the biokinetics of deuterated natural (RRR) and synthetic (all-rac) α-tocopherol (vitamin E) used a simultaneous ingestion or competitive uptake approach and reported relative bioavailability ratios close to 2:1, higher than the accepted biopotency ratio of 1.36:1. The aim of the current study was to compare the biokinetics of deuterated natural and synthetic vitamin E using a noncompetitive uptake model both before and after vitamin E supplementation in a distinct population. Healthy men (n = 10) carrying the apolipoprotein (apo)E4 genotype completed a randomized crossover study, comprised of two 4-wk treatments with 400 mg/d (RRR-α-tocopheryl and all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate) with a 12-wk washout period between treatments. Before and after each treatment period, the subjects consumed a capsule containing 150 mg deuterated α-tocopheryl acetate in either the PRR or all-rac form depending on their treatment regimen. Blood was obtained up to 48 h after ingestion, and tocopherols analyzed by LC/MS. After deuterated all-rac administration, plasma deuterated tocopherol maximum concentrations and area under the concentration vs. time curves (AUC) were lower than those following RRR administration. The RRR:all-rac ratios determined from the deuterated biokinetic profiles (maximum concentration; C-max) and AUCs were 1.35:1 &PLUSMN; 0.17 and 1.33:1 &PLUSMN; 0.18, respectively. The 4-wk supplementation with either PRR or all-rac significantly increased plasma a-tocopherol concentrations (P < 0.001), but decreased the plasma response to newly absorbed deuterated RRR or all-rac α-tocopherol. Using a noncompetitive uptake approach, the relative bioavailability of natural to synthetic vitamin E in apoE4 males was close to the currently accepted biopotency ratio of 1.36:1.

A method is described for the analysis of deuterated and undeuterated alpha-tocopherol in blood components using liquid chromatography coupled to an orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer. Optimal ionisation conditions for undeuterated (d0) and tri- and hexadeuterated (d3 or d6) alpha-tocopherol standards were found with negative ion mode electrospray ionisation. Each species produced an isotopically resolved single ion of exact mass. Calibration curves of pure standards were linear in the range tested (0-1.5 muM, 0-15 pmol injected). For quantification of d0 and d6 in blood components following a standard solvent extraction, a stable-isotope-labelled internal standard (d3-alpha-tocopherol) was employed. To counter matrix ion suppression effects, standard response curves were generated following identical solvent extraction procedures to those of the samples. Within-day and between-day precision were determined for quantification of d0- and d6-labelled alpha-tocopherol in each blood component and both averaged 3-10%. Accuracy was assessed by comparison with a standard high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, achieving good correlation (r(2) = 0.94), and by spiking with known concentrations of alpha-tocopherol (98% accuracy). Limits of detection and quantification were determined to be 5 and 50 fmol injected, respectively. The assay was used to measure the appearance and disappearance of deuterium-labelled alpha-tocopherol in human blood components following deuterium-labelled (d6) RRR-alpha-tocopheryl acetate ingestion. The new LC/TOFMS method was found to be sensitive, required small sample volumes, was reproducible and robust, and was capable of high throughput when large numbers of samples were generated. We studied, for the first time, the near-infrared, stellar and baryonic Tully-Fisher relations for a sample of field galaxies taken from a homogeneous Fabry-Perot sample of galaxies [the Gassendi HAlpha survey of SPirals (GHASP) survey]. The main advantage of GHASP over other samples is that the maximum rotational velocities were estimated from 2D velocity fields, avoiding assumptions about the inclination and position angle of the galaxies. By combining these data with 2MASS photometry, optical colours, HI masses and different mass-to-light ratio estimators, we found a slope of 4.48 +/- 0.38 and 3.64 +/- 0.28 for the stellar and baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, respectively. We found that these values do not change significantly when different mass-to-light ratio recipes were used. We also point out, for the first time, that the rising rotation curves as well as asymmetric rotation curves show a larger dispersion in the Tully-Fisher relation than the flat ones or the symmetric ones. Using the baryonic mass and the optical radius of galaxies, we found that the surface baryonic mass density is almost constant for all the galaxies of this sample. In this study we also emphasize the presence of a break in the NIR Tully-Fisher relation at M(H,K) similar to -20 and we confirm that late-type galaxies present higher total-to-baryonic mass ratios than early-type spirals, suggesting that supernova feedback is actually an important issue in late-type spirals. Due to the well-defined sample selection criteria and the homogeneity of the data analysis, the Tully-Fisher relation for GHASP galaxies can be used as a reference for the study of this relation in other environments and at higher redshifts.

Lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) were thus named because they facilitate the transfer of lipids between membranes in vitro. This study was triggered by the characterization of a 9-kDa LTP from Capsicum annuum seeds that we call Ca-LTP(1). Ca-LTP(1) was repurified, and in the last chromatographic purification step, propanol was used as the solvent in place of acetonitrile to maintain the protein`s biological activity. Bidimensional electrophoresis of the 9-kDa band, which corresponds to the purified Ca-LTP(1), showed the presence of three isoforms with isoelectric points (pIs) of 6.0, 8.5 and 9.5. Circular dichroism (CD) analysis suggested a predominance of alpha-helices, as expected for the structure of an LTP family member. LTPs immunorelated to Ca-LTP(1) from C. annuum were also detected by western blotting in exudates released from C. annuum seeds and also in other Capsicum species. The tissue and subcellular localization of Ca-LTP(1) indicated that it was mainly localized within dense vesicles. In addition, isolated Ca-LTP(1) exhibited antifungal activity against Colletotrichum lindemunthianum, and especially against Candida tropicalis, causing several morphological changes to the cells including the formation of pseudohyphae. Ca-LTP(1) also caused the yeast plasma membrane to be permeable to the dye SYTOX green, as verified by fluorescence microscopy. We also found that Ca-LTP(1) is able to inhibit mammalian alpha-amylase activity in vitro.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) were studied in detail in the past regarding their interaction with therapeutic and drug addiction related compounds. Using fast kinetic whole-cell recording, we have now studied effects of tacrine, an agent used clinically to treat Alzheimer`s disease, on currents elicited by activation of rat alpha(3)beta(4) nAChR heterologously expressed in KX alpha(3)beta(4)R2 cells. Characterization of receptor activation by nicotine used as agonist revealed a K(d) of 23 +/- 0.2 mu M and 4.3 +/- 1.3 for the channel opening equilibrium constant, Phi(-1). Experiments were performed to investigate whether tacrine is able to activate the alpha(3)beta(4) nAChR. Tacrine did not activate whole-cell currents in KX alpha(3)beta(4)R2 cells but inhibited receptor activity at submicromolar concentration. Dose response curves obtained with increasing agonist or inhibitor concentration revealed competitive inhibition of nAChRs by tacrine, with an apparent inhibition constant, K(I), of 0.8 mu M. The increase of Phi(-1) in the presence of tacrine suggests that the drug stabilizes a nonconducting open channel form of the receptor. Binding studies with TCP and MK-801 ruled out tacrine binding to common allosteric sites of the receptor. Our study suggests a novel mechanism for action of tacrine on nAChRs besides inhibition of acetylcholine esterase.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the storage time on the thermal properties of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate/2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxy-prop-1-oxy)-phenyl]propane bisphenyl-alpha-glycidyl ether dimethacrylate (TB) copolymers used in formulations of dental resins after photopolymerization. The TB copolymers were prepared by photopolymerization with an Ultrablue IS light-emitting diode, stored in the dark for 160 days at 37 degrees C, and characterized with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection. DSC curves indicated the presence of an exothermic peak, confirming that the reaction was not completed during the photopolymerization process. This exothermic peak became smaller as a function of the storage time and was shifted at higher temperatures. In DMA studies, a plot of the loss tangent versus the temperature initially showed the presence of two well-defined peaks. The presence of both peaks confirmed the presence of residual monomers that were not converted during the photopolymerization process. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The expression of alpha(1)-adrenoceptor subtypes in several tissues is regulated by gonadal hormones. In this study, we investigated whether castration regulates the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor subtypes mediating the contractions of the aorta from male rats to noradrenaline. Noradrenaline induced similar concentration-dependent contractions in the aorta from control and castrated rats. Treatment of the aorta from both control and castrated rats with the alpha(1B)/alpha(1D)-adrenoceptor alkylating agent chloroethylclonidine resulted in approximate to1600-fold rightward shift in the concentration-response curves to noradrenaline. The pA(2) values found for WB 4101, benoxathian (alpha(1A)-selective) and BMY 7378 (alpha(1D)-selective) indicate that alpha(1D)-adrenoceptors are involved in the contractions of the aorta from control and castrated rats to noradrenaline. However, there was a 15-fold difference between the pK(B) estimated through the lowest effective concentrations of the alpha(1A)-adrenoceptor selective antagonist 5-methyl-urapidil in the aorta from control and castrated rats. The pK(B) estimated in aorta from control rats is consistent with the interaction with alpha(1D)-adrenoceptors (7.58 +/- 0.06), while that calculated in organs from control rats is consistent with alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors (8.76 +/- 0.09). These results suggest that castration induces plasticity in the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor subtypes involved in the contractions of the aorta to noradrenaline. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigated whether or not surgical denervation of the rat vas deferens changes the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor subtypes involved in the contractions to noradrenaline. Denervated vas deferens was approximate to22 times more sensitive to noradrenaline (pD(2)=7.35 +/- 0.04) than control vas (pD(2)= 6.01 +/- 0.03). This difference in noradrenaline potency was eliminated when cocaine (6 muM) was added to control vas (pD(2)=7.22 +/- 0.04). The noradrenaline-induced contractions of control and denervated vas deferens were insensitive to the alpha(1B)/alpha(1D)-adrenoceptor alkylating agent chloroethylclonidine (100 muM, 45 min). The concentration-response curves to noradrenaline in control and denervated vas deferens were competitively antagonised by prazosin (pA(2)approximate to9.6), WB-4101 (pA(2)approximate to9.5), 5-methyl urapidil (pA(2)approximate to8.4), phentolamine (pA(2)approximate to8.7), yohimbine (pA(2)approximate to6.9), BMY 7378 (pA(2)approximate to6.9) and indoramin (pA(2)approximate to8.7). After the treatment of control and denervated vas deferens with phenoxybenzamine, the partial agonist oxymetazoline antagonised competitively the concentration-response curves to noradrenaline showing pA(2) values approximate to7.4 in both groups. We conclude that noradrenaline-induced contractions in control and denervated rat vas deferens are mediated by alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors and that surgical denervation of the rat vas deferens is not able to change the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor subtypes involved in the contractions to noradrenaline.
