The development and maintenance of the sealing of the root canal system is the key to the success of root canal treatment. The resin-based adhesive material has the potential to reduce the microleakage of the root canal because of its adhesive properties and penetration into dentinal walls. Moreover, the irrigation protocols may have an influence on the adhesiveness of resin-based sealers to root dentin. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigant protocols on coronal bacterial microleakage of gutta-percha/AH Plus and Resilon/Real Seal Self-etch systems. One hundred ninety pre-molars were used. The teeth were divided into 18 experimental groups according to the irrigation protocols and filling materials used. The protocols used were: distilled water; sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)+eDTA; NaOCl+H3PO4; NaOCl+eDTA+chlorhexidine (CHX); NaOCl+H3PO4+CHX; CHX+eDTA; CHX+ H3PO4; CHX+eDTA+CHX and CHX+H3PO4+CHX. Gutta-percha/AH Plus or Resilon/Real Seal Se were used as root-filling materials. The coronal microleakage was evaluated for 90 days against Enterococcus faecalis. Data were statistically analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. No significant difference was verified in the groups using chlorhexidine or sodium hypochlorite during the chemo-mechanical preparation followed by eDTA or phosphoric acid for smear layer removal. The same results were found for filling materials. However, the statistical analyses revealed that a final flush with 2% chlorhexidine reduced significantly the coronal microleakage. A final flush with 2% chlorhexidine after smear layer removal reduces coronal microleakage of teeth filled with gutta-percha/AH Plus or Resilon/Real Seal SE.

This study evaluated comparatively the adhesion of Epiphany and AH Plus endodontic sealers to human root dentin treated with 1% NaOCl and 1% NaOCl+17% EDTA, using the push-out test. Sixty root cylinders obtained from maxillary canines had the canals prepared and were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=20), according to root dentin treatment: GI - distilled water (control), GII - 1% NaOCl and GIII - 1% NaOCl+17% EDTA. Each group was divided into 2 subgroups (n=10) filled with either Epiphany or AH Plus. Bond strength push-out test data (kN) were obtained and analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test. There was statistically significant difference between sealers (AH Plus: 0.78 ± 0.13; Epiphany: 0.61 ± 0.19; p<0.01) and among root dentin treatments (distilled water: 0.58 ± 0.19; 1% NaOCl: 0.71 ± 0.12; 1% NaOCl+17% EDTA: 0.80 ± 0.17; p<0.05). In conclusion, AH Plus sealer presented greater adhesion to dentin than Epiphany, regardless of the treatment of root canal walls.

Introduction: This study evaluated in vitro the radiopacity, setting time, flow, film thickness, solubility, and dimensional changes of AH Plus sealer pure (Dentsply De Trey Gmbh, Konstanz, Germany) and containing 5% and 10% of calcium hydroxide. Methods: The study was performed according to the requirements of the ISO 6876:2001 standard and the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA)`s Specification No. 57. The following tests were performed: setting time, flow, film thickness, dimensional stability, radiopacity, and solubility. Data were analyzed statistically by analysis of variance and the Tukey tests with a significance level of 5%. Results: The addition of 5% or 10% calcium hydroxide to AH Plus sealer did not alter significantly the radiopacity or setting time values (p > 0.05). Adding 10% calcium hydroxide reduced the flow compared with pure AH Plus and AH Plus/5% calcium hydroxide. The addition of 5% and 10% calcium hydroxide increased the solubility and expansion of AH Plus. All materials presented expansion valued above those recommended by the ADA. The addition of calcium hydroxide to the sealer resulted in greater film thickness. Conclusions: The addition of 5% calcium hydroxide did not affect most physical properties of AH Plus sealer. Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the flow rate of 3 endodontic sealers: Sealer 26, AH Plus, and MTA Obtura. Study design. According to the method proposed by the American Dental Association (ADA specification no. 57), the sealers were placed between 2 glass slabs under a weight of 120 g. The diameters of the formed discs were measured with a digital paquimeter. The test was repeated 5 times for each sealer. Results. The results were expressed as arithmetic means, and the statistical analysis was performed through Tukey test. AH Plus showed significantly superior flow rate compared with Sealer 26 and MTA Obtura. There was no statistically significant difference between flow rates presented by Sealer 26 and MTA Obtura. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it was concluded that all of the the endodontic sealers tested presented greater flow than the minimum recommended in the ADA 57 specification. P>Aim To assess the physicochemical properties and the surface morphology of AH Plus, Epiphany, and Epiphany SE root canal sealers. Methodology Five samples of each material were employed for each test according to ANSI/ADA specification 57. The samples were assigned to four groups: (i) AH Plus; (ii) Epiphany; (iii) Epiphany + Thinning Resin; (iv) Epiphany SE. The distilled water used during the solubility test was submitted to spectrometry to verify the release of calcium ions. The morphologies of the external surface and the cross-section of the samples were analysed by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Statistical analysis was performed by using One-Way anova and post hoc Tukey-Kramer tests with the null hypothesis set as 5%. Results Setting time, flow and radiopacity results were in accordance with ANSI/ADA requirements whereas the dimensional change of all sealers and solubility of Epiphany did not fulfil ANSI/ADA protocols. AH Plus and Epiphany SE were similar in terms of flow, radiopacity, solubility and dimensional change. The spectrometry test revealed significant calcium ion release from Epiphany with and without the thinning resin. SEM analysis revealed essentially a homogeneous surface with compact layer and some rough areas. Conclusions Setting time, flow, and radiopacity tests conformed to ANSI/ADA standardization. The dimensional change in all groups and the solubility of Epiphany were greater than values considered acceptable, with higher amounts of calcium ion release. Epiphany SE revealed more organized, compacted, and homogeneous polymers in a reduced resin matrix when compared with the other groups.

Aim To evaluate the bond strength of AH Plus and Epiphany sealers to human root canal dentine irradiated with a 980 nm diode laser at different power and frequency parameters, using the push-out test. Methodology Sixty canine roots were sectioned below the cementoenamel junction to provide 4-mm-thick dentine discs that had their root canals prepared with a tapered bur and irrigated with sodium hypochlorite, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and distilled water. The specimens were assigned to five groups (n = 12): one control (no laser) and four experimental groups that were submitted to 980 nm diode laser irradiation at different power (1.5 and 3.0 W) and frequency (continuous wave and 100 Hz) parameters. Half of specimens in each group had their canals filled with AH Plus sealer and half with Epiphany. The push-out test was performed and data (MPa) were analysed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey`s test (P < 0.05). The specimens were split longitudinally and examined under SEM to assess the failure modes after sealer displacement. Results The specimens irradiated with the diode laser and filled with AH Plus had significantly higher bond strength values (8.69 +/- 2.44) than those irradiated and filled with Epiphany (3.28 +/- 1.58) and the nonirradiated controls (3.86 +/- 0.60). The specimens filled with Epiphany did not differ significantly to each other or to the control (1.75 +/- 0.69). There was a predominance of adhesive failures at Epiphany-dentine interface (77%) and mixed failures at AH Plus-dentine interface (67%). Conclusions The 980 nm diode laser irradiation of root canal dentine increased the bond strength of AH Plus sealer, but did not affect the adhesion of Epiphany sealer.

We investigate the size and power properties of the AH test of evolutionary change. This involves examining whether the size results are sensitive to both the number of individual frequencies estimated and the spectral shape adopted under the null hypothesis. The power tests examine whether the test has good power to detect shifts in both spectral position (variance) and spectral shape (autocovariance structure).
