It was found that ceric oxalate is an intermediate product in the oxidation of oxalic acid by ammonium hexanitrato cerate in solvents such as acetonitrile, and a mixture of acetonitrile and glacial acetic acid. Conditions for the formation of ceric oxalate and its decomposition into carbon dioxide and cerous oxalate have been studied. An analytical method for the estimation of oxalic acid in non-aqueous media has been evolved based on this reaction.

Expression of the gene encoding ribosome modulation factor (RMF), as measured using an rmf-lacZ gene fusion, increased with decreasing pH in exponential phase cultures of Escherichia coli. Expression was inversely proportional to the growth rate and independent of the acidifying agent used and it was concluded that expression of rmf was growth rate controlled in exponential phase under acid conditions. Increased rmf expression during exponential phase was not accompanied by the formation of ribosome dimers as occurs during stationary phase. Nor did it appear to have a significant effect on cell survival under acid stress since the vulnerability of an RMF-deficient mutant strain was similar to that of the parent strain. Ribosome degradation was increased in the mutant strain compared to the parent strain at pH 3.75. Also, the peptide elongation rate was reduced in the mutant strain but not the parent during growth under acid conditions. It is speculated that the function of RMF during stress-induced reduction in growth rate is two-fold: firstly to prevent reduced elongation efficiency by inactivating surplus ribosomes and thus limiting competition for available protein synthesis factors, and secondly to protect inactivated ribosomes from degradation.

The overall goal of the joint research project is to relate the chemical reactions involved in the formation of organo-aluminium complexes under acid conditions to their toxic effects on the physiology of aquatic organisms. Finally, this research is intended to predict toxic effects arising from acidity and aluminium under varying environmental conditions. This interim report examines the chemical modelling of ion-binding by humic substances where a computer model has been developed and is being tested using field data, and conditions required for the precipitation of aluminium in surface waters.

The occurrence of the microcystins in the water bodies, especially in drinking water resources, has received considerable attentions. In situ chemical oxidation is a promising cost-effective treatment method to remove MC from water body. This research investigated the reaction kinetics of the oxidation of MCRR by permanganate. Experimental results indicate that the reaction is second order overall and first order with respect to both permanganate and MCRR, and has an activation energy of 18.9 kJ/mol. The second-order rate constant ranges from 0.154 to 0.225 l/mg/min at temperature from 15 to 30 degrees C. The MCRR degradation rates can be accelerated through increasing reaction temperature and oxidant concentration. The reaction under acid conditions was slightly faster than under alkaline conditions. The half-life of the reaction was less than 1 min, and more than 99.5% of MCRR was degraded within 10 min. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A mesostructured cellular foam (MCF) with three-dimensional (313) disordered strutlike structure is prepared by using triblock copolymer (poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene), SBS, M-W = 140K) as template under strong acid conditions. It is the first report to use triblock copolymer with both hydrophobic head and tail groups instead of hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail copolymers to synthesize siliceous mesostructured cellular foams. The resulted materials have high pore volume (0.92 cm(3)/g) and relatively narrow pore size distributions with a large pore size of 7.9 nm, which will allow for the fixation of large active complexes, reduce diffusional restriction of reactants and enable reactions involving bulky molecules to take place, especially.

该文通过大量实验,确定了制备单糖、寡糖及低聚糖的最佳生产工艺,并对几种制备方法做了比较研究.该文采用氧化降解和微波降解等不同技术对甲壳低聚糖的制备工艺进行了研究.H<,2>O<,2>作为氧化剂,在酸性条件下,采用4因素3水平进行正交实验,得到了制备分子量2000以下的寡糖的最佳条件.微波降解制备低聚糖目前尚未见报道,经过该实验证明此方法可降低能耗,减小污染,节省时间和原料,是一个具有产业化前景和市场潜力的好方法.通过以不同的壳聚糖为原料,探讨了在微波场作用下纯溶剂及盐效应对分子量变化的影响,最终产物的分子量均在1×10<'5>~10×10<'5>之间.根据IR光谱,壳聚糖降解前后主要峰的位置都无变化,只是随壳聚糖相对分子质量的降低各峰峰强有所变化,证明了壳聚糖氧化降解及微波降解制备寡糖、低聚糖是以开裂壳聚糖的β-1.4糖苷键来进行.该项研究对更好的开发利用甲壳质资源,促进中国海洋生物制品的发展具有十分重要的意义.

1,2-Cyclic sulfite xylosides offer facile access to 1,2-oxazolines upon reaction with aromatic and alkyl nitrites under Lewis or Bronsted acid conditions. Additionally, hydrophobic ionic liquids facilitate acid-catalysed formations of such oxazolines and C- and O-linked xylosides, providing means to carry out fast reactions at room temperature, and this in yields comparable to reactions conducted in xylene at high temperature for extended reaction time. One of the most important bird breeding and over wintering sites in the west of Europe, the Coto Doñana, was severely impacted by the release of 5 million cubic meters of acid waste from the processing of pyrite ore. The waste entered ecologically sensitive areas of the park (including breeding areas for internationally endangered bird species) causing sustained pH decreases from pH 8.5 to 4.5 and resulting in massive metal contamination of the impacted ecosystem. The contaminating sludge waste contained arsenic at 0.6%, lead at 1.2% and zinc at 0.8% on a dry weight basis. The acid conditions facilitated the solubilization of these metals, leading to water concentrations lethal for aquatic wildlife. The accident caused considerable fish and invertebrate kills and has severe consequences for the protected bird species dependent on the impacted habitats and adjacent areas.

Crystalline aromatic poly(ether ketone)s Such as PEEK and PEK may be cleanly and reversibly derivatized by dithioketalization of the carbonyl groups With 1,2-ethanedithiol or 1,3-propanedithiol under strong acid conditions. The resulting 1,3-dithiolane and 1,3-dithiane polymers are hydrolytically stable, amorphous, and readily soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform and THF and are thus (unlike their parent polymers) easily characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). GPC analysis of a range of derivatized PEEK samples using light-scattering detection revealed, in some instances, a bimodal molecular weight distribution with a small but potentially significant (and previously undetected) very high-molecular-weight fraction.

A mild new procedure for preparing protected peptide thioesters, based oil Ca(2+)-assisted thiolysis of peptide-Kaiser oxime resin (KOR) linkage, is described. Ac-Ile-Ser(Bzl)-Asp(OcHx)-SR (Ac: acetyl; Bzl: benzyl; cHx: cyclohexyl), model peptide, was readily released from the resin by incubating the peptide-KOR at 60 degrees C in mixtures of DMF with n-butanethiol [R = (CH(2))(3)CH(3)] or ethyl 3-mercaptopropionate [R = (CH(2))(2)COOCHCH(3)] containing Ca(CH(3)COO)(2). After serine and aspartic acid side-chain deprotection under acid conditions, Ac-Ile-Ser-Asp-S(CH(2))(2)COOCH(2)CH(3) was successfully obtained with good quality and high yield. This type of C-terminal modified peptide may act as an excellent acyl donor in peptide segment condensation by the thioester method, native chemical ligation and enzymatic methods. The acid and ultrasound catalyzed hydrolysis of solventless TEOS-water mixtures are studied, as a function of the initial additions of ethanol to the mixtures, by means of flux calorimetry measurements. A device was specially designed for this purpose. Under acid conditions, our proposed method has been able to resolve hydrolysis from other condensation reactions, by detecting the exothermal hydrolysis reaction heat. The process has been explained by a dissolution and reaction mechanism. Ultrasound forces the dissolution process to start the reaction. The alcohol produced in the reaction helps the dissolution process to further enhance the hydrolysis. Initial amounts of pure ethanol added to the mixtures shorten the start time of the reaction, due to an additional effect of dissolution, and diminish the reaction rate, as a result of the solvent dilution effect. Our dissolution and reaction mechanism modeling describes the main points arising from the experimental data and yields k(H) = 0.24 M(-1) min(-1) for the second-order hydrolysis rate constant at 39 degrees C.

The acid hydrolysis under ultrasound stimulation of solventless tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)-water mixtures was studied at 40 degrees C, by means of a heat flux calorimetric method, as a function of the initial water/TEOS molar ratio (r) ranging from 2 to 10. The method is based on the time record of the exothermic heat peak of hydrolysis, arising after an induction time under ultrasound stimulation, which is a measure of the reaction rate. The hydrolysed quantity was found to be approximately independent of the water/TEOS molar ratio, even for r < 4. Polycondensation reaction takes place mainly for low water/TEOS molar ratio in order to supply water to allow almost complete hydrolysis. The overall process of dissolution and hydrolysis has reasonably been described by a previous modelling. The dissolution process of water in TEOS, under ultrasound stimulation and acid conditions, was found to be rather dependent of the alcohol produced in the hydrolysis reaction instead of the initial water quantity present in the mixture.
