In 22 samples, 6 from Josephine Bank and 16 from the Great Meteor Bank, 14 halacarid species were found and described. Halacarus spiniger n. sp., Copidognathus magniporus n. sp., Arhodeoporus lineatus n. sp., A. brevocularis n. sp., Coloboceras karamani n. sp., Scaptognathus minutus n. sp., and Atelopsalis newelli were hithero unknown. Acaromantis squilla Trouessart & Neumann and Atelopsalis tricuspis Trouessart were redescribed. Four larvae, probably belonging to Copidognathus longips Bartsch, C. tricorneata (Lohmann), Lohmannella falcata (Hodge), and Atelopsalis newelli n. sp. were described, two Scaptognathus larvae could not be identifird. To date only three species, Copidognathus tricorneata, Lohmannella falcata, and Scaptognathus minutus, have been found on both seamounts.

Squilla (Oratosquilla nepa) is abundant along the west coast of India, inhabiting burrows in sand and mud. The species is little used as it possesses little meat. There is great similarity between chemical composition of Squilla and prawn waste, and it is suggested that Squilla could therefore be used for making chitosan, a potential industrial chemical with various uses. Preparation of chitosan, and the general nature of the prepared product, is described.

A simple method of isolation of protein from jawla prawn and squilla, which does not involve any chemical treatment, is reported. The method consists in blending the jawla prawn/squilla with equal quantity of water, removal of chitinous matter, heating the pulp at 112°C for 15-20 minutes and drying the precipitated protein after filtration.

A water soluble hygroscopic powder has been isolated from squilla in good yield, ranging from 3.5 to 5.0% of the fresh raw material, by a simple direct method. The process consists of homogenising squilla with an equal quantity of water, removal of chitinous matter from the slurry by filtration, heating the filtrate at 0.7 kg/sq.cm steam pressure for 15-20 minutes, removal of the precipitated protein by filtration and concentration and final drying in vacuum of the filtered cooled liquor. The pale brown powder so obtained consists mainly of peptones and proteoses and has been found to be comparable to BDH peptone for growth of bacteria, ability to serve as source for tryptophan for indole production and to provide substrate for the production of hydrogen sulphide. Comparative studies have been made on similar water soluble fractions from two species of prawns, namely, Metapenaeus affinis and Parapenaeopsis stylifera.

Protein extract prepared from squilla (Grato squilla nepa), a commercially unexploited crustacean, was analysed for crude protein and essential amino acids. All the essential amino acids except tryptophan and threonine were present in nutritionally adequate amounts. The protein was evaluated for its nutritional quality in respect of growth rate, protein efficiency ratio (PER) and liver nitrogen content by feeding on rats. Growth rates and protein efficiency ratios were similar in rats fed on casein, squilla protein and a combination of squilla protein and casein (1:1) diet. The weight of liver and kidneys were normal.

I. The report describes the main monthly changes in the distribution and abundance of the zooplankton, other than Copepoda and young fish (dealt with in separate reports), over the southern part of the North Sea from 1932 to 1937. The work is part of the survey carried out by Continuous Plankton Recorders towed at a depth of 10 metres on regular steamship lines between England and the Continent. 2. The limitations to the sampling method are discussed, and it is shown to be unsuitable for recording Mysidacea and Euphausiacea on account of their marked diurnal variation due presumably to vertical migration; they are omitted from the report. 3. The changing distribution of Sagitta, Limacina, Clione, Lamellibranch larvae, Cladocera, Caprellid Amphipoda, Decapod larvae, Echinoderm larvae and Oikopleura are shown in a series of monthly charts while their seasonal fluctuations are compared in time-chart histograms. 4. The Alima larvae of Squilla are recorded on a few occasions in the regions where the Channel opens into the North Sea. 5. The distributional characteristics of the different forms, i.e. their tendencies to even or " patchy " production, are compared.

The thesis is a study undertaken to understand the distribution pattern of Q nega in Cochin waters for better exploitation of the resource and to learn the biological aspects of the animal which has a direct bearing on its utilization for producing different products .The study also presents a thorough knowledge on the size groups available during different seasons for judicious exploitation and utilization of the resource and the changes in the biochemical composition of Q nega during different seasons so as to utilize it properly for producing suitable products throughout the year. The thesis also tests the suitability of the material for producing different products and to test the acceptability of the same for human consumption. The study also aims to show that Squilla can be utilized for the production of industrial products like chitin and chitosan.
