The electrochemical properties of a series of structurally related fullerooxazoles, [6,6] cyclic phenylimidate C-60 (1), 1,2-benzal-3-N-4-O-cyclic phenylimidate C-60 (2), and 1,4-dibenzyl-2,3-cyclic phenylimidate C-60 (3), are described, and the spectroscopic characterizations of their anionic species are reported. The results show that compounds I and 2 undergo retro-cycloaddition reactions that lead to the formation of C-60 and C61HPh, respectively, upon two-electron-transfer reduction. However, compound 3 demonstrates much more electrochemical stability as no retro-cycloaddition reaction occurs under similar conditions. Natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations on charge distribution show there is no significant difference among the dianions of 1, 2, and 3, indicating that the electrochemical stability of 3 is unlikely to be caused by the charge distribution difference of the dianions of three compounds. Examination on the crystal structure of compound 3 reveals close contacts of the C-H group with the heteroatoms (N and O) of cyclic phenylimidate, suggesting the existence of C-H center dot center dot center dot X (X = N, O) intramolecular hydrogen bonding among the addends, which is further confirmed by NBO analysis.

3-[Bis(ethylthio)methylene]pentane-2,4-dione (1a) and 3-[bis(benzylthio)methylene]pentane-2,4-dione (1b) have been investigated as non-thiolic and odorless thiol equivalents in thia-Michael addition reactions. In the presence of aqueous p-dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), compound (1) was cleaved and the generated thiols underwent facile conjugate addition to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones 2 in-situ, affording the corresponding beta-keto sulfides (3) in good yields.

In this paper, the reactions of nitrone, N-methyl nitrone, N-phenyl nitrone and their hydroxylamine tautomers (vinyl-hydroxylamine, N-methyl-vinyl-hydroxylamine and N-phenyl-vinyl-hydroxylamine) on the reconstructed C(100)-2 x 1 surface have been investigated using hybrid density functional theory (B3LYP), Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation (MP2) and multi-configuration complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) methods. The calculations showed that all the nitrones can react with the surface "dimer" via facile 1.3-dipolar cycloaddition with small activation barriers (less than 12.0 kJ/mol at B3LYP/6-31g(d) level). The [2+2] cycloaddition of hydroxylamine tautomers on the C(100) surface follows a diradical mechanism. Hydroxylamine tautomers first form diradical intermediates with the reconstructed C(I 00)-2 x I surface by overcoming a large activation barrier of 50-60 kJ/mol (B3LYP), then generate [2+2] cycloaddition products via diradical transition states with negligible activation barriers. The surface reactions result in hydroxyl or amino-terminated diamond surfaces, which offers new opportunity for further modifications. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

To shed light on stepwise addition reactions in ammonia synthesis, density functional theory calculations are carried out to investigate NHx (x = 1-3) formation on Ru(0001). The reactions on a flat surface are first examined. Transition states and reaction barriers are determined. It is found that the reaction barriers for these stepwise addition reactions are rather high. For example, the barrier for NH hydrogenation is calculated to be 1.28 eV, which is comparable with that of N-2 dissociation. One of the stepwise addition reactions, NH + H --> NH2, on a stepped surface is also considered. Interestingly, the reaction barrier is found to be significantly lower than that on the flat surface, but is considerably higher than that of N-2 dissociation on the same stepped surface. In addition, the coverage effect on the reaction energetics is also addressed. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Catalytic ammonia synthesis is believed to proceed via dissociation of N-2 and H-2 with subsequent stepwise addition reactions from an adsorbed nitrogen atom to NH3. The first step, N-2 dissociation, has been thoroughly studied. However, little is known about the microscopic details of the stepwise addition reactions. To shed light on these stepwise addition reactions, density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation are employed to investigate NHx (x=1,3) formation on Ru(0001). Transition states and reaction barriers are determined in each elementary step. It is found that the reaction barriers for stepwise addition reactions are rather high, for example, the barrier for NH hydrogenation is calculated to be 1.28 eV, which is comparable with that of N-2 dissociation. In addition, one of the stepwise addition reactions on a stepped surface is also considered. The reaction barrier is found to be much higher than that of N-2 dissociation on the same stepped surface, which indicates the importance of stepwise addition reactions in ammonia synthesis. To study the phase relations in the Bi-2212 and Yb2O3 system, Bi2Sr2Ca1-xYbxCu 2Oy thick films are prepared by partial melt processing via an intermediate reaction between Bi-2212 and Yb2O3. When Bi-2212 and Yb2O3 are partially melted and then slowly cooled, solid solutions of Bi2Sr2Ca 1-xYbxCu2Oy, form by reactions between liquid and solid phases which contain Yb. Following these reactions, Ca is partially replaced in Bi-2212 matrix and participates in the formation of secondary phases, such as Bi-free, (Ca, Sr)Ox and CaO. Variation of the Bi-2212-Yb2O3 ratios and processing parameters changes the balance between the phases and leads to different Yb:Ca ratios in the Bi-2212 matrix of processed thick films. When the partial melting process is optimized for each sample to minimize the growth of secondary phases, x = 0.42-0.46 for the samples prepared at pO2 = 0.01 atm, x = 0.24-0.29 for the samples prepared at pO2 = 0.21 atm, x = 0.18-0.23 for the samples prepared at pO2 = 0.99 atm are obtained regardless to the starting compositions. It is found that superconducting properties of Bi 2Sr2Ca1-xYbxCu2O y thick films strongly depend on the processing conditions, because the conditions result in different Yb content in the Bi-2212 matrix and the volume fraction of the secondary phases. The highest Tc(0) of 77, 90 and 91 K were obtained for the samples processed at 0.01, 0.21 and 0.99 atm of O2, respectively.

The addition reactions of alcohols, ROH (R = CH3, C2H5 n-C3H7, i-C3H7 and t-C4H9), to p-bromophenylisothiocyanate show that the rates decrease in the order, CH3OH> C2H5OH> n-C3H7OH> i-C3H7OH> t-C4H9OH, although the basicities of the alcohols vary in the reverse order. The results indicate the greater importance of steric factors as compared with polar factors. Evidence is also presented for the formation of a complex between the isothiocyanate and the alcohol in the first stage of the addition reaction. In the addition of aniline to substituted phenylisothiocyanates the rate data give a satisfactory linear correlation with Hammett σ constants and the results clearly show that electron-withdrawing groups favour the addition reaction. The addition of aniline to alkyl isothiocyanates have been studied in order to find out the nature of alkyl group interaction in these derivatives. Kinetic studies on the addition of substituted anilines to phenylisothiocyanate show that the rate of reaction increases with the electron-donating ability of the substituents on the aniline as also the basicity of the aniline.

The asymmetric synthesis of quaternary stereocenters remains a challenging problem in organic synthesis. Past work from the Stoltz laboratory has resulted in methodology to install quaternary stereocenters α- or γ- to carbonyl compounds. Thus, the asymmetric synthesis of β-quaternary stereocenters was a desirable objective, and was accomplished by engineering the palladium-catalyzed addition of arylmetal organometallic reagents to α,β-unsaturated conjugate acceptors.
Herein, we described the rational design of a palladium-catalyzed conjugate addition reactions utilizing a catalyst derived from palladium(II) trifluoroacetate and pyridinooxazole ligands. This reaction is highly tolerant of protic solvents and oxygen atmosphere, making it a practical and operationally simple reaction. The mild conditions facilitate a remarkably high functional group tolerance, including carbonyls, halogens, and fluorinated functional groups. Furthermore, the reaction catalyzed conjugate additions with high enantioselectivity with conjugate acceptors of 5-, 6-, and 7-membered ring sizes. Extension of the methodology toward the asymmetric synthesis of flavanone products is presented, as well.
A computational and experimental investigation into the reaction mechanism provided a stereochemical model for enantioinduction, whereby the α-methylene protons adjacent the enone carbonyl clashes with the tert-butyl groups of the chiral ligand. Additionally, it was found that the addition of water and ammonium hexafluorophosphate significantly increases the reaction rate without sacrificing enantioselectivity. The synergistic effects of these additives allowed for the reaction to proceed at a lower temperature, and thus facilitated expansion of the substrate scope to sensitive functional groups such as protic amides and aryl bromides. Investigations into a scale-up synthesis of the chiral ligand (S)-tert-butylPyOx are also presented. This three-step synthetic route allowed for synthesis of the target compound of greater than 10 g scale.
Finally, the application of the newly developed conjugate addition reaction toward the synthesis of the taiwaniaquinoid class of terpenoid natural products is discussed. The conjugate addition reaction formed the key benzylic quaternary stereocenter in high enantioselectivity, joining together the majority of the carbons in the taiwaniaquinoid scaffold. Efforts toward the synthesis of the B-ring are presented.

3'-Nonafluorobutylmethyl-4'-methyl-spiro[cyclopentyl-9,1']fluorenes were successfully synthesized via tandem radical-addition reactions between 9,9-diallylfluorenes and perfluorobutyl iodide in the presence of a radical initiator followed by reduction under mild conditions. Single crystal analysis indicates that two substituents at 3,4-positions of cyclopentane are in a maleinoid form. Accordingly, four oligo(fluorene-co-bithiophene)s with the same molecular length of similar to 10 nm (7 fluorene units and 12 thiophene units) containing one to three novel spiro-fluorene units were synthesized.

In chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) gas phase C-60(+) or C-60 can react with fragment ions from three chloromethane and four multichloroethane molecular ions via ion-molecule reactions. A dozen of gas-phase adduct ions of C-60 are observed, and most of them contain chlorine atoms. The results of the comparison and analysis show that the relative intensities of adductions are not directly proportional to the corresponding fragment ions in the MS of reagents, which implies that some fragment ions containing radicals are more reactive with C-60(+) or C-60. This indicates that the alkene-like C-60(+) or C-60 can act as a radical sponge in addition reactions.

Metallo-azomethine ylides, generated from imines by the action of amine bases in combination with LiBr or AgOAc, undergo cycloaddition with both 1R, 2S, 5R- and 1S, 2R, 5S-menthyl acrylate at room temperature to give homochiral pyrrolidines in excellent yield. The stronger the base the faster the cycloaddition and the greater the yield with: 2-t-butyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine > DBU > NEt(3) X-Ray crystal structures of representative cycloadducts establish that the absolute configuration of the newly established pyrrolidine stereocentres is independent of the metal salt and the size of the pyrrolidineC(2)-substituent for a series of aryl and aliphatic imines.
