This paper examines the case of the Forgotten Australians as an opportunity to examine the role of the internet in the presentation of testimony. ‘Forgotten Australians’ are a group who suffered abuse and neglect after being removed from their parents – either in Australia or in the UK - and placed in Church and State run institutions in Australia between 1930 and 1970. The campaign by this profoundly marginalised group coincided with the decade in which the opportunities of Web 2.0 were seen to be diffusing throughout different social groups, and were considered a tool for social inclusion. We outline a conceptual framework that positions the role of the internet as an environment in which the difficult relationships between painful past experiences and contemporary injunctions to remember them, are negotiated. We then apply this framework to the analysis of case examples of posts and interaction on websites with web 2.0 functionality: YouTube and the National Museum of Australia. The analysis points to commonalities and differences in the agency of the internet in these two contexts, arguing that in both cases the websites provided support for the development of a testimony-like narrative and the claiming, sharing and acknowledgement of loss.

Horizontal self-organized superlattice structures consisting of alternating In-rich and Al-rich layers formed naturally during solid-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of In0.52Al0.48As on exactly (001) InP substrates, with In and At fluxes unchanged. The growth temperatures were changed from 490 to 510 degrees C, the most commonly used growth temperature for In0.52Al0.48As alloy. No self-organized superlattices (SLs) were observed at the growth temperature 490 degrees C, and self-organized SLs were observed in InAlAs layers at growth temperatures ranging from 498 to 510 degrees C. The results show that the period of the SLs is very highly regular, with the value of similar to 6 nm, and the composition of In or Al varies approximately sinusoidally along the [001] growth direction. The theoretical simulation results confirm that the In composition modulation amplitude is less than 0.02 relative the In composition of the In0.52Al0.48As lattice matched with the InP substrate. The influence of InAs self-organized quantum wires on the spontaneously formed InxAl1-xAs/InyAl1-yAs SLs was also studied and the formation of self-organized InxAl1-xAs/InyAl1-yAs SLs was attributed to the strain-mediated surface segregation process during MBE growth of In0.52Al0.48As alloy.

In a murine model of chronic disseminated paracoccidioidomycosis (strain 18; intravenous route), Ketoconazole (200 mg/kg in 0.2% agar) was given daily by gavage in three different schedules. Continuous treatment from an early stage of infection (day 3) up to week 20 was the most effective protocol, leading to remission of histopathological lesions and of both humoral and cellular anti-P. brasiliensis immune response, and clearance of the fungus in lungs; only 1 treated animal at week 20 showed pulmonary granulomas, although less extensive than control mice. Continuous treatment from early stage up to week 8, followed by a 16 week-period of drug discontinuity, caused remission of lesions in all but 3 treated mice which showed active pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis similar to controls (14.2% of unresponsiveness to treatment). The continuous Ketoconazole protocol since a late stage of infection (week 4) up to week 20 produced a slower remission of lesions and immune response when compared with the first drug schedule. In this model of paracoccidioidomycosis, Ketoconazole showed no detectable side-effects and was a very effective drug especially in a prolonged administration protocol from an early stage of infection.
