Methyl- and phenylmercury(II) derivatives of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. Crystal structure of (2-mercaptobenzothiazolato)methylmercury(II)

The complexes MeHgL and PhHgL (HL = 2-mercaptobenzothiazole) have been obtained from the reaction of the ligand with methylmercury hydroxide and phenylmercury acetate, respectively, in methanol. MeHgL, which has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (crystal data: triclinic, space group P1, with a = 8.009 (4) Å, b = 10.042 (4) Å, c = 13.074 (3) Å, α = 101.25 (2)°, β = 102.61(3)°, γ = 101.42 (3)°, R = 0.067), crystallizes with two independent molecules, I and I′, contained in each asymmetric unit with a coordination geometry based on the almost linear C-Hg-S group (Hg-S = 2.369 (6) Å, Hg-C = 2.06 (2) Å, and C-Hg-S = 177.7 (7)° for I; Hg-S = 2.375 (6) Å, Hg-C = 2.10 (3) Å, and C-Hg-S = 178.8 (6)° for I′). A secondary intramolecular interaction between the mercury atom and the C=N group of the ring and some weak intermolecular interactions between the metal and sulfur atoms were also found. The vibrational spectra of this compound and the phenylmercury(II) compound are discussed in light of the crystal structure. Diagnostic criteria of the bonding modes for the ligand are assessed. © 1985 American Chemical Society.

One loop conformal invariance of the superstring in an AdS5 × S5 background

Electrocatalytic and voltammetric determination of sulfhydryl compounds through iron nitroprusside modified graphite paste electrode

Iron nitroprusside Fe(II)NP was incorporated into a carbon paste electrode and the electrochemical studies were performed with cyclic voltammetry. The cyclic voltammogram of Fe(II)NP exhibits two redox couple with formal potential (E0')1 = 0.24 e (E0')2 = 0.85 V vs SCE attributed to Fe(II)/Fe(II) and Fe (II)(CN)5NO/Fe(III)(CN)5NO, respectively. The redox couple with (E0')2 = 0.85 V presents an electrocatalytic response for sulfhydryl compounds. The electrocatalytic oxidation of sulfhydryl compounds by the mediator has been used for the determination of L-cysteine and N-acetylcysteine. The modified graphite paste electrode gives a linear range from 9.2 x 10-4-2.0 x 10-2;; 9.6 x 10-4-1.4 x 10-2mol L-1 for the determination of L-cysteine and N-acetylcysteine, respectively, with detection limit of 1.9 x 10-4 mol L-1;; 1.5 x 10 -4 mol L-1 and relative standard desviations ± 5% and 1.5 x 10-3 mol L-1 ± 4% (n=3). The amperometric sensitivities are 0.024 and 0.027 μA/μmol L-1 for L-cysteine and N-acetylcysteine, respectively. The application of this electrode was tested and a commercial pharmaceutical product (Fluimucil) has been determined.

Effectiveness of Microwave Sterilization on Three Hard Chairside Reline Resins

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of microwave irradiation sterilization on hard chairside reline resins. Materials and Methods: Specimens of three reline resins (Kooliner, Tokuso Rebase, and Ufi Gel Hard) were fabricated and subjected to ethylene oxide sterilization. The specimens were then individually inoculated (107 cfu/mL) with Tryptic Soy Broth media containing one of the tested microorganisms (C albicans, S aureus, B subtilis, and P aeruginosa). After 48 hours at 37°C, the samples were vortexed for 1 minute and allowed to stand for 9 minutes, followed by a short vortex to resuspend any organisms present. After inoculation, 40 specimens of each material were immersed in 200 mL of water and subjected to microwave irradiation at 650 W for 6 minutes. Forty non-irradiated specimens were used as positive controls. Replicate specimens (25 μL) of suspension were plated at dilutions of 10-3 to 10-6 on plates of selective media appropriate for each organism. All plates were incubated at 37°C for 48 hours. After incubation, colonies were counted, and the data were statistically analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Twelve specimens of each material were prepared for SEM. Results: All immersed specimens showed consistent sterilization of all the individual organisms after microwave irradiation. SEM examination indicated an alteration in cell morphology after microwave irradiation. Conclusion: Microwave sterilization for 6 minutes at 650 W proved to be effective for the sterilization of hard chairside reline resins.

O limiar de esforço percebido (LEP) corresponde à potência crítica e a um indicador de máximo estado estável de consumo de oxigěnio

The perceived exertion has been a target of several investigations, many times with association with objective physiological indicators in exercise. Recently, the identification of the perceived exertion threshold (PET) was proposed in the water running, which presented no difference in relation to the critical velocity. Theoretically, both parameters would be indicators of the maximum steady state of variables such as V̇O2 and blood lactate. The objective of this work was to verify the coincidence between PET, critical power (PCrit) and an indicator of maximum V̇O2 steady state (PCrit') in cycle ergometer. Eight male participants were submitted to progressive effort test in order to determine V̇O2peak (46.7 ± 8.5 ml/kg/min) and to four rectangular tests until exhaustion for the estimation of the critical power model parameters, PET and PCrit'. The hyperbolic relation between mechanical power and time spent for the V̇O2peak to be reached in each test was used for the PCrit' estimation, considered as the asymptote in the power axis, and the portion of the anaerobic work capacity (CTAnaer) depleted up to the establishment of the V̇O2peak (CTAnaer'). In order to identify PET, the straight lines angular coefficients of the perceived exertion in time (ordinate) and the powers used (abscissa) were adjusted to a linear function that provided a point in the power axis in which the perceived exertion would be kept indefinitely stable. The parameters PCrit and CTAnaer were estimated by means of the power-time non-linear equation. In order to compare the estimations of PET, PCrit and PCrit', the analysis of variance ANOVA for repeated measurements was employed, and the associations were established through the Pearson correlation. CTAnaer and CTAnaer' were compared through the t test. PET (180 W ± 61 W), PCrit (174 W ± 43 W) and PCrit' (176 W ± 48 W) were not significantly different and the correlations were of 0.92-0.98. CTAnaer' (14,080 ± 5,219 J) was lower than CTAnaer (22,093 ± 9,042 J). One concludes that the PET predicts the intensity of PCrit and PCrit' with accuracy.

Hydrolases in the hypopharyngeal glands of workers of Scaptotrigona postica and Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera, Apinae)

Hydrolytic enzymes from hypopharyngeal gland extracts of newly emerged, nurse and foraging workers of two eusocial bees, Scaptotrigona postica, a native Brazilian stingless bee, and the Africanized honey bee (Apis mellifera) in Brazil, were compared. The hypopharyngeal gland is rich in enzymes in both species. Fifteen different enzymes were found in the extracts, with only a few quantitative differences between the species. Some of the enzymes present in the extracts may have intracellular functions, while others seem to be digestive enzymes. Scaptotrigona postica, had lower β-glucosidase and higher lipase esterase activities than A. mellifera. The differences may be due to different feeding habits and behavioral peculiarities of the two species. ©FUNPEC-RP.

Genetic population data from Araraquara region (SP State, Brazil) using PowerPlex® 16 Systems

In the present study, allele frequency distributions for the 15 STR loci included in the PowerPlex® 16 Systems (Promega) were obtained from a sample of 55 unrelated individuals living in Araraquara region (SP, Brazil). The frequency of each allele for each locus tested, the exact test and the forensic and paternity parameters were calculated using POWERSTATS ver. 1.2 (Promega) and GENEPOP ver. 3.2 software. All loci are in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and they reached a combined power discrimination of 0.999999999999999973 and combined power exclusion of 0.99999987, showing to be a powerful tool for paternity testing and individual identification in the population analyzed. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. One-loop conformal invariance of the type II pure spinor superstring in a curved background

We compute the one-loop beta functions for the Type II superstring using the pure spinor formalism in a generic supergravity background. It is known that the classical pure spinor BRST symmetry puts the background fields on-shell. In this paper we show that the one-loop beta functions vanish as a consequence of the classical BRST symmetry of the action. © SISSA 2007.

Effects of atrazine on female Wistar rats: Morphological alterations in ovarian follicles and immunocytochemical labeling of 90 kDa heat shock protein

Fertility in female mammals may be affected by a variety of endocrine disrupters present in the environment. Herbicide atrazine is an example of endocrine disrupter employed in agriculture, which disrupts estrous cyclicity in rats. Aiming to characterize morphologically the effect of low and sublethal doses of atrazine on the ovaries of Wistar rats, in an effort to determine the possible intrafollicular target site through which this herbicide acts adult females were submitted to both subacute and subchronic treatments. Additionally, immunocytochemical labeling of 90 kDa heat shock protein (HSP90) was performed in order to evaluate the role played by this protein in the ovary, under stressed conditions induced by herbicide exposure. The results indicated that atrazine induced impaired folliculogenesis, increased follicular atresia and HSP90 depletion in female rats submitted to subacute treatment, while the subchronic treatment with low dose of atrazine could compromise the reproductive capacity reflected by the presence of multioocytic follicle and stress-inducible HSP90. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Study of biosorption of rare earth metals (La, Nd, Eu, Gd) by Sargassum sp. biomass in batch systems: Physicochemical evaluation of kinetics and adsorption models

This work evaluated kinetic and adsorption physicochemical models for the biosorption process of lanthanum, neodymium, europium, and gadolinium by Sargassum sp. in batch systems. The results showed: (a) the pseudo-second order kinetic model was the best approximation for the experimental data with the metal adsorption initial velocity parameter in 0.042-0.055 mmol.g -1.min-1 (La < Nd < Gd < Eu); (b) the Langmuir adsorption model presented adequate correlation with maximum metal uptake at 0.60-0.70 mmol g-1 (Eu < La < Gd < Nd) and the metal-biomass affinity parameter showed distinct values (Gd < Nd < Eu < La: 183.1, 192.5, 678.3, and 837.3 L g-1, respectively); and (c) preliminarily, the kinetics and adsorption evaluation did not reveal a well-defined metal selectivity behavior for the RE biosorption in Sargassum sp., but they indicate a possible partition among RE studied. © (2009) Trans Tech Publications.
