Study of Salmonella typhimurium mutagenicity assay of (E)-piplartine by the Ames test

Phytochemical studies carried out with Piperaceae species have shown great diversity of secondary metabolites among which are several displayed considerable biological activities. The species Piper tuberculatum has been intensively investigated and a series of amides have been described. For instance, (E)-piplartine showed significant cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines, especially human leukemia cell lines; antifungal activity against Cladosporium species; trypanocidal activity and others. Considering the popular use of P. tuberculatum and the lack of pharmacological studies regarding this plant species, the mutagenic and antimutagenic effect of (E)-piplartine was evaluated by the Ames test, using the strains TA97a, TA98, TA100 and TA102 of Salmonella typhimurium. No mutagenic activity was observed for this compound.

Sequence variation of the alpha-lactalbumin gene in Holstein and Nellore cows

The alpha-lactalbumin is a subunit of lactose-synthase, an enzyme responsible for lactose production, a disaccharide that influences milk production. Sequence variations of bovine alpha-lactalbumin have been associated with differences in milk yield. This study aimed to analyze allelic frequency differences at position-1689 (g. AG) and+15 (g. AG) of the alpha-lactalbumin gene in Holstein (Bos taurus) and Nellore (Bos indicus) cows. Blood samples were analyzed from 34 Holstein, 104 Nellore, and 99 Dairy Nellore cows using PCR-RFLP. The different RFLP patterns were sequenced and a novel sequence variation on nucleotide-46 was identified. An adenine at this position was designated as the A allele and a guanine was designated B allele. The frequencies of alleles A-1689, A-46, and A+15 differed between Holstein and both Nellore breeds. The results show that differences in alpha-lactalbumin allelic variants in the 5`-flanking and the 5`-UTR region might be associated with differences in milk production between Holstein cows and cows from Nellore breeds. However, the lack of difference between Nellore and Dairy Nellore suggests that other sequence variantions that regulate milk production might be responsible for the selection of Dairy Nellore cows with superior milk production.

Major depressive disorder is a moderately heritable disorder characterized by one or more major depressive episodes. Laboratory tests to suport MDD diagnosis are not available. Diagnosis and treatment are based on various signs and symptoms not always fitting into strict diagnostic categories. Research for biological markers of neuropsychiatric disorders has been a challenge.

ESEIG Mobile: an m-learning approach in a superior school

In recent years, mobile learning has emerged as an educational approach to decrease the limitation of learning location and adapt the teaching-learning process to all type of students. However, the large number and variety of Web-enabled devices poses challenges for Web content creators who want to automatic get the delivery context and adapt the content to mobile devices. This paper studies several approaches to adapt the learning content to mobile phones. It presents an architecture for deliver uniform m-Learning content to students in a higher School. The system development is organized in two phases: firstly enabling the educational content to mobile devices and then adapting it to all the heterogeneous mobile platforms. With this approach, Web authors will not need to create specialized pages for each kind of device, since the content is automatically transformed to adapt to any mobile device capabilities from WAP to XHTML MP-compliant devices.

Notas para una comparación de la teoría del imperialismo con la teoría del comercio internacional

La lectura de una serie de textos relativamente mal conocidos, tanto en la tradición neoclásica como en la teoria del imperialismo permite reconstruir la trayectoria seguida por esos autores para explicar la situación europea de 1840 en adelante. Un eslabón fundamental en la cadena de razonamientos resulta ser en último término el papel de la agricultura (y después de la mineria) y los limites que su lento desarrollo impone a la expansión del sistema en conjunto. En el esquema ricardiano, que es el punto de partida común de las dos teorias consideradas, la escasez de tierras de calidad es el parárnetro más relevante. En la versión neoclásica posterior, influida por la dotación de factores que se da en los paises colonizados por Inglaterra, la renta de escasez se generaliza potencialmente a todos los factores, privando de base a la teoría objetiva del valor-trabajo. En el desarrollo marxista de la teoria juegan un rol más importante los vestigios feudales que siguen presentes en la agricultura capitalista europea y la incapacidad de ésta para alimentar a costes bajos a una poblaci6n creciente.
