This paper reports on design of digital control for wind turbines and its relation to the quality of power fed into the Brazilian grid on connecting to it a 192 MW wind farm equipped with doubly fed induction generators. PWM converters are deployed as vector controlled regulated current voltage sources for their rotors, for independent control of both active and reactive power of those generators. Both speed control and active power control strategies are analyzed, in the search for maximum efficiency of conversion of wind kinetic energy into electric power and enhanced quality of delivered power. Introduction and Objectives - Paraoxonases may exert anti-atherogenic action by reducing lipid peroxidation. Previous studies examined associations between polymorphisms in the paraoxonase 1 (PON1) gene and development of coronary artery disease (CAD), with inconsistent results. Given the similarities in clinical and pathophysiological risk factors of CAD and calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS), we postulated a link between PON1 alleles and CAVS progression. Methods - We investigated the association between PON1 55 and 192 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), their enzyme activity, and CAVS progression assessed by aortic valve area and transvalvular peak velocity in 67 consecutive patients with moderate CAVS and 251 healthy controls. Results - PON1 paraoxonase activity was higher in CAVS patients (P<0.001). The PON1 genotype Q192R SNP (P=0.03) and variant allele (R192) (P=0.01) frequencies differed between CAVS patients and controls. Significant association existed between PON1 enzyme activity, phenotypic effects of PON1 192 genotype polymorphisms, and CAVS progression, but not between PON1 55 and high-density lipoprotein (P=0.44) or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.12), between 192 genotype and high-density lipoprotein (P=0.24) or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.52). Conclusion - The PON1 genotype Q192R SNP has an important effect on CAVS disease progression. This study helps outline a genotype-phenotype relationship for PON1 in this unique population.

Right from the beginning of the development of the medical specialty of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) the harmonization of the fields of competence and the specialist training across Europe was always an important issue. The initially informal European collaboration was formalized in 1963 under the umbrella of the European Federation of PRM. The European Academy of PRM and the UEMS section of PRM started to contribute in 1969 and 1974 respectively. In 1991 the European Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (EBPRM) was founded with the specific task of harmonizing education and training in PRM in Europe. The EBPRM has progressively defined curricula for the teaching of medical students and for the postgraduate education and training of PRM specialists. It also created a harmonized European certification system for medical PRM specialists, PRM trainers and PRM training sites. European teaching initiatives for PRM trainees (European PRM Schools) were promoted and learning material for PRM trainees and PRM specialists (e-learning, books and e-books, etc.) was created. For the future the Board will have to ensure that a minimal specific undergraduate curriculum on PRM based on a detailed European catalogue of learning objectives will be taught in all medical schools in Europe as a basis for the general medical practice. To stimulate the harmonization of national curricula, the existing postgraduate curriculum will be expanded by a syllabus of competencies related to PRM and a catalogue of learning objectives to be reached by all European PRM trainees. The integration of the certifying examination of the PRM Board into the national assessment procedures for PRM specialists will also have to be promoted.
