Procyclical Productivity and Returns-to-Scale in Philippine Manufacturing

The Philippines is regarded as a highly oligopolistic economy, and it is argued that this is a cause of the relative stagnation of the economy to neighbouring East Asian economies. This presumption might be associated with increasing returns to scale and market power, which are consistent with the procyclical total factor productivity that is observed in the Philippines and the United States. However, this study found no strong evidence supporting increasing returns for aggregate manufacturing and three-digit manufacturing industries during 1956-1980 in the Philippines, based on data constructed by Hooley (1985). Further, this study does not support external effect discussed in Caballero and Lyons (1992).

Has Low Productivity Constrained Competitiveness of African Firms? : Comparison of the Firm Performances with Asian Firms

It has been argued that poor productive performance is one of critical sources of stagnation of the African manufacturing sector, but firm-level empirical supports are limited. Using the inter-regional firm data of the garment industry, technical efficiency and its contribution to competitiveness measured as unit costs were compared between Kenyan and Bangladeshi firms. Our estimates indicated that there is no significant gap in the average technical efficiency of the two industries despite conservative estimation, although unit costs greatly differ between the two industries. Higher unit cost in Kenyan firms mainly stems from high labour cost, while impact of inefficiency is quite small. Productivity accounts little for the stagnation of garment industry in several African countries.

C 15H 1602 (a synthetic precursor to dodecahedrane), monoclinic, P21/n, a = 12.171 (5), b = 6.976(5), c = 13.868 (3) A, B = 102.56 (3) ° , Z = 4, D m = 1.30, D c = 1.318 g cm -3, F(000) = 488, g(Mo K¢t) = 0.92 cm- 1. Intensity data were collected on a Nonius CAD-4 diffractometer and the structure was solved by direct methods. Full-matrix least-squares refinement gave R = 0.077 (R w = 0.076) for 1337 observed reflections. All the five-membered rings are cis fused and have envelope (C s symmetry) conformations.

O Centrão assegura que tem maioria para aprovar suas propostas e mudar o sistema de votação no Plenário do Projeto de Constituição. São citadas as principais propostas do Centrão. O Deputado Carlos Sant¿anna (PMDB-BA) comenta a questão. O Deputado Jorge Leite (PMDB-RJ) afirma que o desejo dos Constituintes é colocar as coisas em ordem, e fazer uma Constituição progressista, moderna voltada para os interesses do povo brasileiro e depressa. O Deputado Sarney Filho (PFL- MA) acredita que quem deve produzir a Constituição é a maioria dos Constituintes eleitos legitimamente para elaborá-la. O Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) havia mantido as vantagens salarias dos marajás de Alagoas. Mas o Governador Fernando Collor de Melo decidiu que não vai cumprir a sentença do Supremo e não vai pagar os marajás. A maioria da Constituinte apoia decisão do Governador de Alagoas e, dentre eles, estão os Deputados Eduardo Bomfim (PMDB-AL) e Amaury Muller (PDT-RS). O Senador Ronan Tito (PMDB-MG) deseja suprimir o artigo da Constituição que trata do direito adquirido, pois defende que o tema deve ser consagrado no Código Civil. O Deputado Francisco Kuster (PMDB-SC) afirma que se o partido não der apoio, os Constituintes irão buscar apoio suprapartidário para encaminhar um projeto de decisão na Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC) para impedir que o governador de Alagoas venha a pagar os salários dos marajás.

ShCal04 Southern Hemisphere Calibration, 0–11.0 Cal Kyr BP

Recent measurements on dendrochronologically-dated wood from the Southern Hemisphere have shown that there are differences between the structural form of the radiocarbon calibration curves from each hemisphere. Thus, it is desirable, when possible, to use calibration data obtained from secure dendrochronologically-dated wood from the corresponding hemisphere. In this paper, we outline the recent work and point the reader to the internationally recommended data set that should be used for future calibration of Southern Hemisphere 14C dates.

Note on the single-shock solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation

The well-known shock solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation are revisited, together with their limitations in the context of plasma (astro)physical applications. Although available in the literature for a long time, it seems to have been forgotten in recent papers that such shocks are monotonic and unique, for a given plasma configuration, and cannot show oscillatory or bell-shaped features. This uniqueness is contrasted to solitary wave solutions of the two parent equations (Korteweg-de Vries and Burgers), which form a family of curves parameterized by the excess velocity over the linear phase speed.
