Carbon, boron and oxygen isotope ratios of sediments from the Moresby Seamount

We report results from boron, carbon and oxygen stable isotope analyses of faulted and veined rocks recovered by scientific ocean drilling during ODP Leg 180 in the western Woodlark Basin, off Papua New Guinea. In this area of active continental extension, crustal break-up and incipient seafloor spreading, a shallow-dipping, seismically active detachment fault accommodates strain, defining a zone of mylonites and cataclasites, vein formation and fluid infiltration. Syntectonic microstructures and vein-fill mineralogy suggest frictional heating during slip during extension and exhumation of Moresby Seamount. Low carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of calcite veins indicate precipitation from hydrothermal fluids (delta13C PDB down to -17?; delta18O PDB down to -22?) formed by both dehydration and decarbonation. Boron contents are low (<7 ppm), indicating high-grade metamorphic source rock for the fluids. Some of the delta11B signatures (17-35?; parent solutions to calcite vein fills) are low when compared to deep-seated waters in other tectonic environments, likely reflecting preferential loss of 11B during low-grade metamorphism at depth. Pervasive devolatilization and flux of CO2-rich fluids are evident from similar vein cement geochemistry in the detachment fault zone and splays further updip. Multiple rupture-and-healing history of the veins suggests that precipitation may be an important player in fluid pressure evolution and, hence, seismogenic fault movement.

(Table T2) Rock magnetic parameters of ODP Leg 180 sites

Rock magnetic measurements were performed on sediments above 20 meters below seafloor (mbsf) (general) and above 2.5 mbsf (detailed) at Sites 1109, 1110, and 1115 (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 180) in the western Woodlark Basin. Rock magnetic parameters imply the presence of magnetite as a principal magnetic mineral in the sediments. The hysteresis ratios lay in the pseudo-single domain field and generally showed the trend close to that for the mixture of single domain and multidomain magnetite The sediments in the oxidized zones at the top at Sites 1109 and 1115 provided a different trend in the logarithmic plot of the hysteresis ratios, and the oxidized samples were characterized by higher coercivity.

Argon, uranium, thorium and lead composition and ages of ODP Leg 180 sites

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 180, 11 sites were drilled in the vicinity of the Moresby Seamount to study processes associated with the transition from continental rifting to seafloor spreading in the Woodlark Basin. This paper presents thermochronologic (40Ar/39Ar, 238U/206Pb, and fission track) results from igneous rocks recovered during ODP Leg 180 that help constrain the latest Cretaceous to present-day tectonic development of the Woodlark Basin. Igneous rocks recovered (primarily from Sites 1109, 1114, 1117, and 1118) consist of predominantly diabase and metadiabase, with minor basalt and gabbro. Zircon ion microprobe analyses gave a 238U/206Pb age of 66.4 ± 1.5 Ma, interpreted to date crystallization of the diabase. 40Ar/39Ar plagioclase apparent ages vary considerably according to the degree to which the diabase was altered subsequent to crystallization. The least altered sample (from Site 1109) yielded a plagioclase isochron age of 58.9 ± 5.8 Ma, interpreted to represent cooling following intrusion. The most altered sample (from Site 1117) yielded an isochron age of 31.0 ± 0.9 Ma, interpreted to represent a maximum age for the timing of subsequent hydrothermal alteration. The diabase has not been thermally affected by Miocene-Pliocene rift-related events, supporting our inference that these rocks have remained at shallow and cool levels in the crust (i.e., upper plate) since they were partially reset as a result of middle Oligocene hydrothermal alteration. These results suggest that crustal extension in the vicinity of the Moresby Seamount, immediately west of the active seafloor spreading tip, is being accommodated by normal faulting within latest Cretaceous to early Paleocene oceanic crust. Felsic clasts provide additional evidence for middle Miocene and Pliocene magmatic events in the region. Two rhyolitic clasts (from Sites 1110 and 1111) gave zircon 238U/206Pb ages of 15.7 ± 0.4 Ma and provide evidence for Miocene volcanism in the region. 40Ar/39Ar total fusion ages on single grains of K-feldspar from these clasts yielded younger apparent ages of 12.5 ± 0.2 and 14.4 ± 0.6 Ma due to variable sericitization of K-feldspar phenocrysts. 238U/206Pb zircon, 40Ar/39Ar K-feldspar and biotite total fusion, and apatite fission track analysis of a microgranite clast (from Site 1108) provide evidence for the existence of a rapidly cooled 3.0 to 1.8 Ma granitic protolith. The clast may have been transported longitudinally from the west (e.g., from the D'Entrecasteaux Islands). Alternatively, it may have been derived from a more proximal, but presently unknown, source in the vicinity of the Moresby Seamount.

Analysing the Prospects of a Successful Application Under s 180 of the Property Law Act 1974 (Qld)

Section 180 of the Property Law Act 1974 (Qld) makes provision for an applicant to seek a statutory right of user over a neighbour’s property where such right of use is reasonably necessary in the interests of effective use in any reasonable manner of the dominant land. In recent years, the Queensland courts have been confronted with a number of such applications. Litigation has also been common in New South Wales which has a statutory provision in largely similar terms. This article seeks to identify those factors that have underpinned successful applications, the obstacles that an applicant may encounter and the considerations that have guided the courts when considering the associated issues of compensation and costs.

VFT performance of a 180/110 mm co-axial gap in SF6 up to 4 bar absolute

Disconnector switch operation in GIS generates VFT voltages in the system. It is important, for insulation co-ordination purposes, to obtain accurate VFT V-t data for typical gap geometries found in GIS. This paper presents experimentally obtained VFT V-t data for a 180/1 lOmm co-axial gap. The VFT has a time to first peak of 35 ns and a oscillation frequency of 13,6 MHz. Due to the location of the voltage divider in a compartment adjacent to the gap, a correction factor of 1.1 is used to relate the measured breakdown voltage to that in the gap. Positive polarity VFT V-t data is presented for 1, 2, 3 and 4 bar absolute and negative polarity VFT data for 3 and 4 bar absolute. Two methods of generating the VFT's are used. The first is to power up the test transformer at power frequency. The second is to generate a switching impulse by discharging a capacitor into the primary of the test transformer.

Geometries of the antiproton-nucleus optical potentials at 180 MeV

The moments of the real and the absorptive parts of the antiproton optical potentials are evaluated for the first time to study the geometries of the potentials at 180 MeV. Interesting features are revealed which are found to be comparable to the proton case in general despite the presence of strong annihilation. A few interesting deviations, however, are also found compared to the proton case.

A taxonomic mystery for more than 180 years: the identity and systematic position of Brachysaura minor (HARDWICKE & GRAY, 1827)

Brachysaura is a monotypic genus of agamid lizard found in the Indian subcontinent; the identity and systematic position of B. minor has been long debated, and it has at times been subsumed into Agama, Charasia and Laudakia, with some authors suggesting affinities to Calotes. We constructed nuclear and mitochondrial phylogenetic trees including Brachysaura and allied agamid genera to resolve its phylogenetic position. We also compared osteology and external morphology with the genera Agama, Calotes and Laudakia. Hemipenial morphology was compared with Calotes and some other agamids from South Asia. Both nuclear and mitochondrial phylogenies demonstrate that Brachysaura is nested within the widespread South and Southeast Asian genus Calotes, with which it also shares certain external morphological, osteological and hemipenial characters. Adaptations to ground dwelling in Brachysaura minor has resulted in unique modifications to its body plan, which is likely why generic allocation has been long confused. This study also highlights the need for an integrated systematic approach to resolve taxonomic ambiguity in Asian agamids.

O Deputado Francisco Kuster (PMDB-SC) declara que a pressão popular força a Constituinte a produzir um texto avançado e progressista. Aposentados entregam emenda pedindo uma remuneração mais justa. O Deputado Farabulini Junior (PTB-SP) informa que a emenda é para garantir a paridade, isto é, que os aposentados tenham um benefício igual ao salário que recebiam na ativa. Na Sessão Extraordinária, o Deputado Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT-SP) defende total liberdade sindical e irrestrita ao direito de greve. O Deputado Afif Domingos (PFL- SP) combate a estabilidade no emprego, defendendo a livre negociação entre patrão e empregado e a criação de um dispositivo que impeça a demissão imotivada. O Deputado Augusto Carvalho (PCB-DF) defende as propostas do Partido Comunista Brasileiro para garantir os direitos do trabalhador: estabilidade no emprego, férias com salário em dobro e estabilidade para gestantes antes e após o parto.
