This research presents a study of roof thermal efficiency in individual housing for calves exposed to sun and shade through infrared thermography, internal temperature and thermal comfort indexes. Four different individual housing for calves covered with asbestos-free fiber-cement corrugated sheets were evaluated. Three of them were directly exposed to the sun: (i) corrugated sheets painted white in the external surface, (ii) corrugated sheets without painting and (iii) with screen shade fabric installed 0.10m under de internal surface of the corrugated sheet. The fourth individual housing was installed in the shade area and covered with unpainted corrugated fiber-cement sheets. The analysis was taken for 21 days at 11h00min, 14h00min and 17h00min. The results indicate significant variations in the roofing surface temperature and thermal comfort indexes among the treatments exposed to the sun and shade, for all the evaluations during the day. The infrared thermography images were effective for better understanding the heat transfer processes from the roof to the internal environment of the housing.

Nowadays the environmental issues and the climatic change play fundamental roles in the design of urban spaces. Our cities are growing in size, many times only following immediate needs without a long-term vision. Consequently, the sustainable development has become not only an ethical but also a strategic need: we can no longer afford an uncontrolled urban expansion. One serious effect of the territory industrialisation process is the increase of urban air and surfaces temperatures compared to the outlying rural surroundings. This difference in temperature is what constitutes an urban heat island (UHI). The purpose of this study is to provide a clarification on the role of urban surfacing materials in the thermal dynamics of an urban space, resulting in useful indications and advices in mitigating UHI. With this aim, 4 coloured concrete bricks were tested, measuring their emissivity and building up their heat release curves using infrared thermography. Two emissivity evaluation procedures were carried out and subsequently put in comparison. Samples performances were assessed, and the influence of the colour on the thermal behaviour was investigated. In addition, some external pavements were analysed. Albedo and emissivity parameters were evaluated in order to understand their thermal behaviour in different conditions. Surfaces temperatures were recorded in a one-day measurements campaign. ENVI-met software was used to simulate how the tested materials would behave in two typical urban scenarios: a urban canyon and a urban heat basin. Improvements they can carry to the urban microclimate were investigated. Emissivities obtained for the bricks ranged between 0.92 and 0.97, suggesting a limited influence of the colour on this parameter. Nonetheless, white concrete brick showed the best thermal performance, whilst the black one the worst; red and yellow ones performed pretty identical intermediate trends. De facto, colours affected the overall thermal behaviour. Emissivity parameter was measured in the outdoor work, getting (as expected) high values for the asphalts. Albedo measurements, conducted with a sunshine pyranometer, proved the improving effect given by the yellow paint in terms of solar reflection, and the bad influence of haze on the measurement accuracy. ENVI-met simulations gave a demonstration on the effectiveness in thermal improving of some tested materials. In particular, results showed good performances for white bricks and granite in the heat basin scenario, and painted concrete and macadam in the urban canyon scenario. These materials can be considered valuable solutions in UHI mitigation.

Thermography is a method of testing and diagnosis based on the infrared radiation emitted by bodies. It allows to measure this radiation from a distance and with no contact, getting a thermogram or thermal image, object of study of this project. All bodies that are at a certain temperature emit infrared radiation. However, making a thermographic inspection must take into account the emissivity of the body, capability of emitting radiation. This not only depends on the temperature of the body, but also on its surface characteristics. The tools needed to get a thermogram are mainly a thermal imaging camera and software that allows analysis. The camera sees the infrared emission of an object and converts it into a visible image, originally monochrome. However, after it is colored by the camera or software for easier interpretation of thermogram. To obtain these thermal images it exists various techniques, which differ in how heat energy is transferred to the body. These techniques are classified into passive thermography, active and vibrotermografy. The method used in each case depends on the thermal characteristics of the body, the type of defect to locate or spatial resolution of images, among other factors. To analyze the images and obtain diagnoses and defects, accuracy is important. Thus there is a image processing to minimize the effects caused by external causes, improving image quality and extract information from inspections. Thermography is a non-‐destructive test method very flexible and offers many advantages. So the scope is very wide, ranging from industrial applications to research and development.Surveillance and security, energy saving, environmental or medicine are some of the areas where thermography provides significant benefits. This project is a theoretical study of thermography, which describes in detail each of these aspects. It concludes with a practical application, creating an infrared camera from a webcam, and making an analysis of the images obtained with it. This will demonstrate some of the theories explained as well as the ability to recognize objects by thermography.

ABSTRACT Soccer is a sport with a high incidence of injury. Moreover, in professional soccer injuries lead to a tough recovery process for the players, a reduction athletic performance for them and for their teams, and large economic costs for the club. In this issue, the literature concludes that in the preseason a greater incidence of overuse injury occurs (ie, without contact), and this is a type of injury that we can prevent. Therefore, we consider that it is important to know and develop methods, tools and principles to obtain effective preventive programs that reduce the high injury incidence figures shown in the literature. This study observed and recorded injuries, through the questionnaire F-MARC, from a professional soccer team in the Spanish league during the preseason 2008 (n = 24) and 2009 (n = 24). Moreover, during the 2009 preseason infrared thermography was applied to acquire information about the assimilation of the training load by the players, and this information was used to improve the decision making in the specific post-exercise injury prevention protocols, which were the same used in the previous season 2008. The study had a pre-post design without control group. Is a longitudinal study where, after an initial registration of injuries in the 2008 preseason, subjects were exposed to the independent variable, using infrared thermography, included in the protocol for injury prevention during the 2009 preseason. The results of this study show a significant reduction of up to 60% in the frequency of injury during the 2009 preseason, and a decrease in total injury incidence passing from 8.3 injuries per 1000 hours of exposure in 2008 to 3.4 in 2008. With this, the likelihood of injury decreased significantly from 85% of the players injuried in 2008 to 26% in 2009, also muscle injuries in 2009 fell 70% compared to 2008, and sick leave days that caused by all the injuries happened were reduced a 91.8% in the 2009 preseason. On the other hand, the thermal profile of the players according to their laterality and dominance, is quiet similar in their temperatures, both average and maximum values, with an estimated average of the highest temperatures in the lower back and popliteal areas in the back areas, and lower temperatures in the ankles and knees. All body areas studied, except for the ankle (p <0.05), had no significant differences between both sides of the body, establishing an average difference between both sides of 0.06 ± 0.16 °C. Given these results, we consider the upper limit of normal bilateral thermal asymmetry 0.3 °C for all body areas studied in the lower limb except for ankles. The environmental parameter higher related with temperature recorded by the camera is the temperature of the room with a correlation coefficient close to r = 1.00, followed by atmospheric pressure with a correlation coefficient near r = 0.50, and finally, the humidity that, in the range of values considered in the study, it is not related with temperature in each body area. On the other hand, the results of one-way ANOVA indicate that there are differences between the three temperature of the room groups (1 ° = 18-21 °C, 2 º = 22-24 ºC and 3 º = 25-31 ºC). Moreover, the results of the Tukey HSD test indicate that there are differences between each of the groups for all body areas studied except the ankles. Finally, we propose the equation TC-standard = TC-real – [0,184 * (TS – 21ºC)] to predict the influence of temperature on the temperature recorded by the thermographic camera. In conclusion, we can say from our results that the implementation of a post-exercise injury prevention protocol based on information from assessments with infrared thermography reduces the incidence of injury in professional soccer players. We must be aware that we are facing a field study, where there are many factors that could influence the results and they are difficult to control. Therefore, we must be cautious and conclude that the information acquired from the thermographic evaluation has been one of the aspects that helped to significantly reduce the incidence of injury in the preseason 2009 in the Spanish professional football team, but probably they could exist other factors with a positive effect on the reduction of the injury rates.

Thermography for scientific research and practical purposes requires a series of procedures to obtain images that should be standardized; one of the most important is the time required for acclimatization in the controlled environment. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the appropriate acclimatization time in rest to reach a thermal balance on young people skin. Forty-four subjects participated in the study, 18 men (22.3 ± 3.1 years) and 26 women (21.7 ± 2.5 years). Thermographic images were collected using a thermal imager (Fluke ®), totaling 44 images over a period of 20 minutes. The skin temperature (TSK) was measured at the point of examination which included the 0 minute, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20. The body regions of interest (ROI) analyzed included the hands, forearms, arms, thighs, legs, chest and abdomen. We used the Friedman test with post hoc Dunn?s in order to establish the time at rest required to obtain a TSK balance and the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare age, BMI, body fat percentage and temperature variations between men and women, considering always a significance level of pmenor que0.05. Results showed that women had significantly higher temperature variations than men (pmenor que0.01) along the time. In men, only the body region of the abdomen obtained a significant variance (pmenor que0.05) on the analyzed period, both in the anterior and posterior part. In women, the anterior abdomen and thighs, and the posterior part of the hands, forearms and abdomen showed significant differences (pmenor que0.05). Based on our results, it can be concluded that the time in rest condition required reaching a TSK balance in young men and women is variable, but for whole body analysis it is recommended at least 10 minutes for both sexes.

The technical improvement and new applications of Infrared Thermography (IRT) with healthy subjects should be accompanied by results about the reproducibility of IRT measurements in different popula-tion groups. In addition, there is a remarkable necessity of a larger supply on software to analyze IRT images of human beings. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: firstly, to investigate the reproducibility of skin temperature (Tsk) on overweight and obese subjects using IRT in different Regions of Interest (ROI), moments and side-to-side differences (?T); and secondly, to check the reliability of a new software called Termotracker®, specialized on the analysis of IRT images of human beings. Methods: 22 overweight and obese males (11) and females (11) (age: 41,51±7,76 years; height: 1,65±0,09 m; weight: 82,41±11,81 Kg; BMI: 30,17±2,58 kg/m²) were assessed in two consecutive thermograms (5 seconds in-between) by the same observer, using an infrared camera (FLIR T335, Sweden) to get 4 IRT images from the whole body. 11 ROI were selected using Termotracker® to analyze its reproducibility and reliability through Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Coefficient of Variation (CV) values. Results: The reproducibility of the side-to-side differences (?T) between two consecutive thermograms was very high in all ROIs (Mean ICC = 0,989), and excellent between two computers (Mean ICC = 0,998). The re-liability of the software was very high in all the ROIs (Mean ICC = 0,999). Intraexaminer reliability analysing the same subjects in two consecutive thermograms was also very high (Mean ICC = 0,997). CV values of the different ROIs were around 2%. Conclusions: Skin temperature on overweight subjects had an excellent reproducibility for consecutive ther-mograms. The reproducibility of thermal asymmetries (?T) was also good but it had the influence of several factors that should be further investigated. Termotracker® reached excellent reliability results and it is a relia-ble and objective software to analyse IRT images of humans beings.

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a safe and non-invasive tool used for examining physiological functions based on skin temperature (Tsk) control. The aim of this paper was to establish the probable thermal difference between the beginning and the end of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rehabilitation process after surgery. For this purpose thermograms from 25 ACL surgically operated patients (2 women, 23 men) were taken on the first and last day of a six-week rehabilitation program. A FLIR infrared camera according to the protocol established by the International Academy of Clinical Thermology (IACT). The results showed significant temperature increases in the posterior thigh area between the first and the last week of the rehabilitation process probably due to a compensatory mechanism. According to this, we can conclude that temperature of the posterior area of the injured and non-injured leg has increased from the first to the last day of the rehabilitation process.

ABSTRACT This thesis is part of the research started in 2004 and focusing on the study of the energy efficiency in wine aging constructive solutions. The main objective is to promote energy conservation and sustainability in the design of wine aging rooms. To do so, this study focuses on the analysis of the underground cellars, example of eco-construction, since they usually provide adequate conditions for wine aging without using air-conditioning systems. In particular, key aspects for characterizing and understanding these constructions, which often determine the success or failure of them. Thus, the complex behavior of natural ventilation throughout the year is discussed, determining the influencing factors and revealing the role of both the access tunnel and the ventilation chimney. In addition, numerical models are developed and validated using CFD simulation, allowing an in-depth assessment and prediction of the thermofluidynamic behavior in underground constructions. Moreover, uniformity and stability of the aging room throughout the year is quantified, allowing for precise information useful to set recommendations and design guidelines for defining monitoring plans. Finally, hygrothermal behavior differences between a wide range of underground cellars for red wine, red wine wineries with alternative construction solutions and wineries for generous wines and cava wines, In addition, new methodologies adapted towards the particular characteristics of these constructions, a monitoring system based on infrared thermography to perform periodic inspections for environmental controls of the aging rooms, are developed. It is expected that the technical studies and tools developed here will help to improve the design of new wineries, and also the hygrothermal conditions of the existing ones, headed for keeping Spain in the forefront of the countries producing high quality wine.

ABSTRACT This doctoral dissertation discusses field research conducted to monitor heritage assets with sensor networks and other non-invasive techniques. The aim pursued was to contribute to conservation by tracking or preventing decay-induced damage. Monitoring methodologies based on three-dimensional data logger networks were used in short-term micro-climatic, comfort and energy studies to draw conclusions about the energy efficiency of three heating systems widely used in central Iberian churches. The impact of these systems on occupant comfort and decay of heritage or built elements was also explored. Different wireless sensor platforms were deployed and analysed to determine which delivered the best results in the context of long-term heritage monitoring from the standpoints of communications, energy demand and network architecture. A methodology was subsequently designed to study communication quality in a number of cultural and natural heritage scenarios and help establish the considerations to be borne in mind when deploying wireless sensor networks for heritage monitoring in future. As in data logger-based sensor networks, the monitoring conducted in this research with wireless platforms identified many instances of decay, described hereunder. Tracking those situations will help prevent damage in the respective scenarios. The research also contributes to preventive conservation based on non-invasive monitoring using techniques such as infrared thermography, protimeter-based surface damp measurements, high resolution electrical resistivity surveys and georadar analysis. The conclusions drawn address the advantages and drawbacks of each technique and its suitability for the various phases of analysis and capacity to detect or characterise damage. This dissertation also describes the intermeshed usage of these techniques that led to the identification of the origin of severe damp-induced damage in a real scenario.

The hot-spot phenomenon is a relatively frequent problem occurring in current photovoltaic generators. It entails both a risk for the photovoltaic module’s lifetime and a decrease in its operational efficiency. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of widely accepted procedures for dealing with them in practice. This paper presents the IES–UPM observations on 200 affected photovoltaic modules. Visual and infrared inspection, as well as electroluminescence, peak power rating and operating voltage tests have been carried out. Thermography under steady state conditions and photovoltaic module operating voltage, both at normal photovoltaic system operating conditions, are the selected methods to deal in practice with hot-spots. The temperature difference between the hot-spot and its surroundings, and the operating voltage differences between affected and non-affected photovoltaic modules are the base for establishing defective criteria, at the lights of both lifetime and operating efficiency considerations. Hot-spots temperature gradients larger than 20 °C, in any case, and larger than 10 °C when, at the same time, voltage operating losses are larger than the allowable power losses fixed at the photovoltaic module warranties, are proposed as rejecting conditions for routine inspections under contractual frameworks. The upper threshold of 20 °C is deduced for temperate climates from the basic criterion of keeping absolute hot-spot temperatures below 20 °C.
