Young novice drivers are at considerable risk of injury on the road. Their behaviour appears vulnerable to the social influence of their parents and friends. The nature and mechanisms of parent and peer influence on young novice driver (16–25 years) behaviour was explored via small group interviews (n = 21) and two surveys (n1 = 1170, n2 = 390) to inform more effective young driver countermeasures. Parental and peer influence occurred in preLicence, Learner, and Provisional (intermediate) periods. Pre-Licence and unsupervised Learner drivers reported their parents were less likely to punish risky driving (e.g., speeding). These drivers were more likely to imitate their parents and reported their parents were also risky drivers. Young novice drivers who experienced or expected social punishments from peers, including ‘being told off’ for risky driving, reported less riskiness. Conversely drivers who experienced or expected social rewards such as being ‘cheered on’ by friends – who were also more risky drivers – reported more risky driving including crashes and offences. Interventions enhancing positive influence and curtailing negative influence may improve road safety outcomes not only for young novice drivers, but for all persons who share the road with them. Parent-specific interventions warrant further development and evaluation including: modelling safe driving behaviour by parents; active monitoring of driving during novice licensure; and sharing the family vehicle during the intermediate phase. Peer-targeted interventions including modelling of safe driving behaviour and attitudes; minimisation of social reinforcement and promotion of social sanctions for risky driving also need further development and evaluation.

Objective: This study assessed 12-month service use patterns among people with psychotic disorders and sought to identify determinants of service use. Methods: As part of a large two-phase Australian study of psychotic disorders, structured interviews were conducted with a stratified random sample of adults who screened positive for psychosis. Demographic characteristics, social functioning, symptoms, mental health diagnoses, and use of psychiatric and nonpsychiatric services were assessed. Data were analyzed for 858 persons who had an ICD-10 diagnosis of a psychotic disorder and who had been hospitalized for less than six months during the previous year. Results: People with psychotic disorders had high levels of use of health services, both in absolute terms and relative to people with nonpsychotic disorders. Those with psychotic disorders were estimated to have an average of one contact with health services per week. Use of psychiatric inpatient services was associated with parenthood, higher symptom levels, recent attempts at suicide or self-harm, personal disability, medication status, and frequency of alcohol consumption. Services provided by general practitioners (family physicians) were more likely to be obtained by older people, women, people with greater availability of friends, those with fewer negative symptoms, and those whose service needs were unmet by other sources. People who were high users of health services also reported having more contact with a range of non-health agencies. Conclusions: The predictors of service use accounted for small proportions of the variance in overall use of health services. The role of general practitioners in providing and monitoring treatment programs and other psychosocial interventions needs to be acknowledged and enhanced.

This chapter is concerned with the complexity and difficulty of truth telling as it is played out in two graphic novels: Stitches: A Memoir (Small 2009) and Why We Broke Up (Handler & Kalman, 2011). These texts establish a link between creative imagination and pain as the central protagonists come to see the therapeutic value of literature and film in helping them understand the complex emotional worlds they inhabit and the bitter truths about love and relationships. The discussion examines how these texts privilege a particular kind of independent subjectivity through aesthetic creation and appropriation. It also considers how speaking and silence are co-present elements in gender relations and each has its part to play in the double process of suffering and healing.

Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on edistää ja kehittää saksalaisen liedmusiikin suomennosten tutkimusta. Tutkimusaineistona on käytetty kymmentä laulua Franz Schubertin säveltämästä laulusarjasta Winterreise (1827), joka pohjautuu Wilhelm Müllerin runoihin, ja Kyllikki Solanterän suomennoksia (1960) kyseisistä lauluista. Lähtökohtana oli lähtökielinen teksti, johon suomennosta verrattiin. Hypoteesina oli, että tavulukujen merkitys liedmusiikin kääntämisessä on suurempi kuin muiden lingvististen tai semanttisten ominaisuuksien, koska musiikki ja nuotit asettavat tiukat rajat käännökselle, eikä kääntäjä voi muuttaa kappaleen musiikillista rakennetta. Sanatarkan käännöksen sijaan kääntäjän tulee pyrkiä säilyttämään kappaleen semanttinen sisältö ja tunnelma riimejä unohtamatta. Aluksi kerrotaan taustatietoja säveltäjästä, sanoittajasta, teoksesta, liedmusiikista ja kääntäjästä. Teoriaosiossa kartoitetaan, mihin kategorioihin liedtekstien kääntäminen voidaan luokitella kuuluvaksi. Analyysi pohjautuu Wittbrodtin luokitteluun (1995). Teoriaosiossa käsitellään myös ekvivalenssia, adekvaattisuutta, näennäiskäännöksiä, tyyliä, uskollisuutta alkuperäisteokselle, vapaan kääntämisen rajoja ja käännösvirheitä tutkittavasta materiaalista valikoitujen esimerkkien pohjalta. Esimerkkejä edeltää aina teoriaosuus. Varsinainen vertailuosio, jossa vertaillaan lähtö- ja kohdetekstejä, on jaettu kuuteen osioon: säe- ja säkeistöluvut, sanaluvut, tavuluvut, kirjaimien poisjättö, suorat ja epäsuorat kysymykset sekä kappaleiden nimet. Sana- ja tavulukujen eroavaisuuksista esitetään myös taulukot. Sana- ja tavulukujen kohdalla pohditaan, mistä erot johtuvat. Kaiken kaikkiaan pohditaan myös, ovatko käännösratkaisut onnistuneita, ja miten kääntäjä on niihin päätynyt. Laulettavuutta käsittelevässä osiossa esitetään ensin aikaisempia pohdintoja ja tutkimustuloksia kyseisestä aiheesta. Lopuksi teen Mannilan Blueprint-metodin (2005) mukaiset testit. Metriikkatestin teen esimerkinomaisesti yhdelle säkeistölle ja musikaalisen testin teen kaikille kymmenelle laululle. Musikaalisessa testissä analysoidaan tarkemmin lähtökielisiä säkeitä ja niiden suomenkielisiä vastineita, joiden tavuluvut eroavat toisistaan. Loppupäätelmiä edeltävässä luvussa esitetään vielä suomalaisen lauluntekijän ajatuksia sanoittamisesta. Hypoteesi tavuluvuista osoittautui oikeaksi. 146 säkeestä vain viidessä eivät lähtö- ja kohdetekstin tavuluvut olleet identtiset, mikä todistaa sen, että kääntäjä pyrkii säilyttämään kappaleen rytmin. Kääntäjä on myös säilyttänyt kappaleiden riimit, mikä vaikuttaa osaltaan rytmin säilymiseen. Sanalukujen kohdalla taas vain 16 säkeellä oli identtiset sanaluvut, mikä kertoo siitä, että niitä tärkeämpää on säilyttää kappaleen semanttinen sisältö ja tunnelma. Käännösten voidaan katsoa kuuluvan useaan kategoriaan. Kappaleiden käännökset ovat suurimmalta osin ekvivalentteja, mutta osittain ne voidaan luokitella näennäiskäännöksiksi. Tyyli ei ole säilynyt virheettömänä aivan jokaisessa käännöksessä, mutta yhtään kääntäjän puutteellisesta kieli- tai kääntämistaidosta johtuvaa käännösvirhettä kappaleissa ei ole. Suomentaja ei ole tuottanut yhtään täydellisen sanatarkkaa käännöstä, vaikka leksikaalinen ero on osittain vain hiuksenhieno. Tämä osoittaa sen, että vapaan kääntämisen aste on liedmusiikin suomennoksissa suhteellisen korkea. Kaiken kaikkiaan Solanterän käännöksiä voi pitää suhteellisen onnistuneina.

A prospective study was conducted of fathers' transition to parenthood from mid-pregnancy to 6 weeks postpartum. The subjects were 198 fathers from Greece (Athens) and 142 from Britain (Bristol). Social class, age and parity distributions were similar between the two populations. The culture and social structure experienced by each varied widely, however, and was a focus of interest. Two major themes in fatherhood across the two populations were explored: first, the father's instrumental role in provision of emotional and practical support to his partner and care for his child; and second the father's emotional reaction to his partner's pregnancy, the birth of his child and early parenthood. In both cultures fathers reported that they took an active instrumental role in supporting their partner and in participating in childcare. Markedly more British fathers attended the delivery. There were no overall differences in the degree to which fathers participated in childcare though the nature of this participation varied. British fathers more commonly took on housework duties. During their partner's pregnancy Greek fathers experienced significantly higher malaise than their British counterparts and also reported feeling that they had less social support. Common to many fathers in both cultures during this time were fears that their partner might change or be damaged by the pregnancy. After the birth, there was no difference in emotional well-being between the Greek and British fathers. Reactions to fatherhood and enjoyment of the child were similar for the two cultures also. Patterns of correlation between variables both within and across the antenatal and postnatal time periods were, for the most part, similar for the two cultures. Social support, however, was found to relate to father's emotional and instrumental reaction to parenthood only in the case of the British sample. Findings are discussed in terms of each culture's point on the continuum of social change.

The Struggle for Eros: On Love and Gender in the Pahlen Series The present dissertation examines how gender, sexuality and motherhood are constructed in the novel series Fröknarna von Pahlen (The Misses von Pahlen, I VII, 1930 1935) by the Swedish author Agnes von Krusenstjerna. The aim of the study is to analyze how the Pahlen series relates to the discourses on gender and sexuality circulating in the 1930s, and how the series opens a dialogue with the feminist thinking of the time especially with the book Lifslinjer I (Love and Marriage, 1903) by the Swedish author Ellen Key. Fröknarna von Pahlen holds a central position in the research on Agnes von Krusenstjerna partly due to the literary debate that the novel series triggered. The debate was connected to the development taking place in the Swedish society in the beginning of the 1930s, in the so-called second phase of the Modern Breakthrough. Sweden was at that time characterized by struggle over the definitions of gender, sexuality and parenthood, and this struggle is also visible in the Pahlen series. The literary debate took place in 1934 1935 and it began after an article by the modernist writer Karin Boye was published in Social-Demokraten on 28 January 1934. In her polemic article, Boye saw the Pahlen series as a sign that the family institution is on the verge of a breakdown and with it the whole moral system that has come to existence through it . Boye went on to state that Krusenstjerna only sees and describes and that she explores neither new literary forms nor new values. Boye wrote the article before the last two parts of the novel series were published, so obviously she could not discuss the utopian vision characterizing those parts. This study, however, strives to demonstrate that Krusenstjerna not only sees and describes, but that she like many of her contemporary female colleagues appears to take the request of Friedrich Nietzsche to revaluate all values seriously. Like the works of her contemporaries, Krusenstjerna s Pahlen series is marked by a double vision on the one hand a critique of the prevailing social order, and on the other hand a dream of a new world and a new human being. In this research the vision of the Pahlen series is characterized as queer in order to emphasize that the series not only criticizes the prevailing gender order and its morals, but is also open for new ways of doing gender, parenthood, and family.

The parenthood experience of a mother with a disabled child and the meaning of the social environment and parent-professional partnerships The importance of parental guidance when a family has a child with a disability or autism has been pointed out by several studies. The present research was based on the premise that by supporting the mother we can help the whole family to cope better and the professionals in day care or at school are able to support parents. The starting point was the subjective experience, which is also the central focus of the phenomenological method. The purpose of this study was firstly to describe the experience of the mother and the dialogue between mother and educational professionals. Secondly it was the task of this research to discover what kind of support and information the mother obtains from her social environment. At the background of this study there was the ecological theory of Bronfenbrenner, the ecocultural approach by Gallimore and the interactive examination of family that take into consideration the whole environment and personal situation. The research data was collected by interviewing the mothers, the day care personnel and the teachers at school. In this research there were a total of 32 interviews and 24 informants: 10 mothers who have a child with a disability and/or autism, 8 professionals in day care and 6 teachers at school. This study was longitudinal because the same mothers were interviewed twice, first in 1998 and then after five years in 2003. It was thus possible to get information on whether their life situation had changed and the nature of those changes. The data of this study was analysed by the method of phenomenological psychology that was applied for this study. The findings indicated that all mothers had experienced many complicated emotional feelings such as: anger, mourning, fear and sadness as well as love and bonding. It can be said that several human feelings existed at the same time. Mothers experienced that the support of the social environment, for example, relatives, families in the same situation and persons taking care of the child had significant meaning for their coping. However the life situation among the mothers varied. Mostly mothers received valuable support for their parenthood and they have adopted a strong emotion for manage ring. Mothers with an autistic child were more stressed than mothers with a mentally retarded child. A few mothers had numerous problems with taking care of their child and they did not get enough help. Same mothers were very exhausted too and the situation was quite the same after five years, when their child was teenager. All mothers said that after starting school the support for the family had significally diminished. Mothers said that dialogue with teacher got on without problems, but there were meetings seldom, so it wasn´t possible to get enough support for their parenthood. The aim of this study is to describe and interpret discourses in Finnish national early childhood education and care (ECEC) documents concerning the child, childhood and family, including preschool education of six-year-old children. The study begins with preparation phase of the Act on Children s Day Care (1967) and concludes with the definition of ECEC policy (1999). The research data consists of committee memoranda and national ECEC curriculum guidelines. The total number of documents studied was 20, comprising some 1700 pages. The research data was examined with qualitative text analysis and employed a discursive approach. A semiotic square (Greimas rectangle) served as a tool for clarifying the discourses and constructions reflected in the research data. The theoretical framework of the study consists of the theories of childhood and family studies. The main concepts from childhood studies used in this study were childhood as a cultural construct and child-centred pedagogy in ECEC. The theoretical approaches from family studies used were the formation of modern and late-modern parenthood and family, as well as the concept of familism. Two main discursive lines were constructed from the ECEC documents. The notion of universalistic childhood suggests that early education and care aim to create the same good childhood for all children, regardless of their family background or living area. The second discursive line followed in the documents is the familistic discourse. This discourse contains emphasis on the priority of parental care. The construct of the competent child was found in the research data as early as in the mid-1970s. On the other hand, the construct of the weak family is distinguishable throughout almost the entire research period. This raises the question of whether Finnish ECEC system has been developed for the competent and self-sufficient child of a weak family which needs constant support and guidance of welfare experts. According to the study, it appears that within the Finnish ECEC system the relatively heavy emphasis on social work rather than on early education has been legitimised by the construct of the weak family. This study also shows that a more thorough analysis should be given to what we mean when we say that the main task of ECEC system is to support families in the upbringing of their children. The study was completed during the period when historical decisions concerning the administration in Finland were in the making (i.e. the potential transfer of ECEC services from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health to the Ministry of Education). Also, over the past decade, a major reformation of the Act on Children s Daycare has been on the agenda, but no concrete measures have been implemented. Based on the findings of this study, we can ask for what kind of child and family we are preparing the ECEc reforms of the new millennium. The purpose of this study was to examine the conceptions adoptive parents and kindergarten teachers have of adopted children in day care. Earlier Finnish research concerning international adoption has discussed adoption, adopted children and adoptive parents from the point of view of identity, racism and school. There has hardly been any research in Finland concerning adoption from the point of view of day care. The study focuses on how the special characteristics of adopted children are taken into consideration in day care. The ecological theory, in which a child's growth and learning environments are studied as part of the broader environment, provided the theoretical framework for the study. The study was based also on a second theory: intercultural competence or the capacity to interact with different people taking into consideration their individual characteristics and situations so that one understands and is understood. The first research problem consisted of describing the conceptions adoptive parents and day care teachers have of the special characteristics of adopted children. The second research problem was to examine adopted parents' expectations of kindergarten and of kindergarten teachers. The third research problem was to find out what kind of support day care teachers think they need when working with adopted children. The study focused on 20 adoptive parents and 15 kindergarten teachers. Research material was collected in the form of essay writings amounting to a total of 73 pages. The respondents wrote about their experiences with the help of a supporting questionnaire. The research method was qualitative and narrative. The results of the study show that adoptive parents have similar conceptions of adopted children's special characteristics concerning their character, social competence, adaptation and appearance. Adoptive parents had a better understanding of the dynamics of attachment than kindergarten teachers, in this study. When describing the special characters of adopted children, the teachers regarded adopted children in particular as needing special support. According to the results of the study, adoptive parents feel adoption matters and adoptive parenthood are something quite new and bewildering to day care teachers. Adoptive parents did not feel they got any support from the kindergarten in their parenthood. Adoptive parents regarded as particularly important the start of day care and the familiarisation process during which adopted children need time and special support due to earlier experiences of separation and abandonment. The findings of the study show that kindergarten teachers have little knowledge of adoption and the significance of adoption for a child's growth and development. Kindergarten teachers felt at a loss in dealing with adoption issues and clearly need additional support in the matter.

The repair of corneal wounds requires both epithelial cell adhesion and migration. Basement membrane (BM) and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins function in these processes via integrin and non-integrin receptors. We have studied the adhesion, spreading and migration of immortalized human corneal epithelial (HCE) cells and their interactions with the laminins (Lms), fibronectins and tenascins produced. Human corneal BM expresses Lms-332 and -511, while Lm-111 was not found in these experiments. HCE cells produced both processed and unprocessed Lm-332, whereas neither Lm-111 nor Lm-511 was produced. Because HCE cells did not produce Lm-511, although it was present in corneal BM, we suggest that Lm-511 is produced by stromal keratocytes. The adhesion of HCE cells to Lms-111, -332 and -511 was studied first by determining the receptor composition of HCE cells and then by using quantitative cell adhesion assays. Immunofluorescence studies revealed the presence of integrin α2, α3, α6, β1 and β4 subunits. Among the non-integrin receptors, Lutheran (Lu) was found on adhering HCE cells. The cells adhered via integrin α3β1 to both purified human Lms-332 and -511 as well as to endogenous Lm-332. However, only integrin β1 subunit functioned in HCE cell adhesion to mouse Lm-111. The adhesion of HCE cells to Lm-511 was also mediated by Lu. Since Lm-511 did not induce Lu into focal adhesions in HCE cells, we suggest that Lm-511 serves as an ECM ligand enabling cell motility. HCE cells produced extradomain-A fibronectin, oncofetal fibronectin and tenascin-C (Tn-C), which are also found during corneal wound healing. Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against integrins α5β1 and αvβ6 as well as the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptide inhibited the adhesion of HCE cells to fibronectin. Although the cells did not adhere to Tn-C, they adhered to the fibronectin/Tn-C coat and were then more efficiently inhibited by the function-blocking MAbs and RGD peptide. During the early adhesion, HCE cells codeposited Lm-332 and the large subunit of tenascin-C (Tn-CL) beneath the cells via the Golgi apparatus and microtubules. Integrin β4 subunit, which is a hemidesmosomal component, did not mediate the early adhesion of HCE cells to Lm-332 or Lm-332/Tn-C. Based on these results, we suggest that the adhesion of HCE cells is initiated by Lm-332 and modulated by Tn-CL, as it has been reported to prevent the assembly of hemidesmosomes. Thereby, Tn-CL functions in the motility of HCE cells during wound healing. The different distribution of processed and unprocessed Lm-332 in adhering, spreading and migrating HCE cells suggests a distinct role for these isoforms. We conclude that the processed Lm-332 functions in cell adhesion, whereas the unprocessed Lm-332 participates in cell spreading and migration.

The present cross-sectional study aimed to assess oral health behaviour, dental and periodontal conditions, dental care, and their relationships among elderly dentate patients in Lithuania. The target population in the study were dentate patients aged 60 and older attending public dental services in Kedainiai, Lithuania. The data collection took place between the autumn of 1999 and the winter of 2001. Data were collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire for all (n=174) and a clinical examination targeting about half of the subjects (n=100). The questionnaire inquired about oral health behaviour, the life-first and also the most recent dental treatments, sources on and self-assessed knowledge of oral self-care, a self-reported number of teeth, and socio-demographic information. The clinical examination included basic dental and periodontal conditions. A total of 82 women and 92 men completed the questionnaire; their mean age was 69.2 and their average number of teeth was 16.2 (CI 95% 15.4-17.1). In all, 25% had 21 or more teeth and 32% indicated wearing removable dentures. The oral health behaviour, the participants reported, was poor: 30% reported twice daily toothbrushing, 57% responded that they always use fluoride toothpaste, 19% indicated daily interdental cleaning, nearly all said they take sugar in their coffee and tea, and 30% indicated going for check-ups. As the main source of information on oral self-care, the subjects indicated health professionals (82%), followed by social contacts (72%), broadcasted media (58%), and printed media (42%). A total of 34% assessed their knowledge of oral self-care as good, and their self-assessed knowledge correlated (r=0.52) with professional guidance they had received about oral self-care. In their most recent treatment, conservative (39%) and non-conservative (34%) treatments dominated, and preventive ones were the least reported (7%). Regarding guidance in oral self-care, 54% reported having received such about toothbrushing, 32% about interdental cleaning, and 33% had been given visual information. Clinical examinations revealed the presence of plaque, calculus, bleeding on probing and deepened pockets in all of the subjects; 70% of the subjects were diagnosed with pockets of 6mm and deeper, 94% with caries, and 73% with overhangs of restorations. Those subjects assessing their knowledge of oral self-care as good and reporting a higher intensity of guidance in oral self-care as received, indicated practicing the recommended oral self-care more frequently. Twice daily toothbrushing was associated with good self-assessed knowledge of oral self-care (OR 4.1, p<0.001) and a university education (OR 5.6, p<0.001). Those subjects with better oral health behaviour had a greater number of teeth. Having 21 or more teeth was associated with good self-assessed knowledge of oral self-care (OR 4.1, p=0.03). Better periodontal conditions were associated with a higher frequency of toothbrushing. The presence of periodontal pockets of 6mm and deeper was associated with the level of self-assessed knowledge of oral self-care being below good (OR=3.0, p=0.04) and the level of dental cleanliness being poor (OR=2.7, p=0.02). To conclude, oral health behaviour and conditions call for improvement in elderly subjects in Lithuania. To improve the oral health of their elderly dentate patients, dentists should apply all the available tools of chair-side prevention and active guidance. The latter would be an effective means of updating the knowledge of oral self-care and supporting recommended oral health behaviour. A preventive approach should be strongly emphasized in countries with limited resources for oral health care, such as Lithuania. Dimeric phenolic compounds lignans and dilignols form in the so-called oxidative coupling reaction of phenols. Enzymes such as peroxidases and lac-cases catalyze the reaction using hydrogen peroxide or oxygen respectively as oxidant generating phenoxy radicals which couple together according to certain rules. In this thesis, the effects of the structures of starting materials mono-lignols and the effects of reaction conditions such as pH and solvent system on this coupling mechanism and on its regio- and stereoselectivity have been studied. After the primary coupling of two phenoxy radicals a very reactive quinone me-thide intermediate is formed. This intermediate reacts quickly with a suitable nucleophile which can be, for example, an intramolecular hydroxyl group or another nucleophile such as water, methanol, or a phenolic compound in the reaction system. This reaction is catalyzed by acids. After the nucleophilic addi-tion to the quinone methide, other hydrolytic reactions, rearrangements, and elimination reactions occur leading finally to stable dimeric structures called lignans or dilignols. Similar reactions occur also in the so-called lignification process when monolignol (or dilignol) reacts with the growing lignin polymer. New kinds of structures have been observed in this thesis. The dimeric com-pounds with so-called spirodienone structure have been observed to form both in the dehydrodimerization of methyl sinapate and in the beta-1-type cross-coupling reaction of two different monolignols. This beta-1-type dilignol with a spirodienone structure was the first synthetized and published dilignol model compound, and at present, it has been observed to exist as a fundamental construction unit in lignins. The enantioselectivity of the oxidative coupling reaction was also studied for obtaining enantiopure lignans and dilignols. A rather good enantioselectivity was obtained in the oxidative coupling reaction of two monolignols with chiral auxiliary substituents using peroxidase/H2O2 as an oxidation system. This observation was published as one of the first enantioselective oxidative coupling reaction of phenols. Pure enantiomers of lignans were also obtained by using chiral cryogenic chromatography as a chiral resolution technique. This technique was shown to be an alternative route to prepare enantiopure lignans or lignin model compounds in a preparative scale.

Yhdysvallat on ottanut johtavan roolin terrorisminvastaisessa sodassa ja julkaissut terrorisminvastaisen sodan asiakirjoja, joista kansallinen turvallisuusstrategia vuosilta 2002 ja 2006 sekä kansallinen terrorisminvastainen asiakirja vuodelta 2006 ovat tämän tutkimuksen lähdeaineisto. Tutkielmassa analysoin, miten Yhdysvallat perustelee ja pyrkii oikeuttamaan terrorisminvastaisen sotansa. Tarkastelun teen vertaamalla terrorisminvastaisen sodan asiakirjoja perinteiseen länsimaiseen oikeudenmukaisen sodan teoriaan. Tutkimuksessani vastaan myös siihen, täyttääkö terrorisminvastainen sota oikeudenmukaisen sodan ehdot. Tarkastelussa käytän metodina systemaattista käsiteanalyysiä. Terrorisminvastaisen sodan tärkein väline on demokratia, johon Yhdysvallat sisällyttää ihmisoikeuksia ja yksilönvapauksia. Terrorisminvastaisen sodan tavoitteena on luoda sellaiset maailmanlaajuiset ja rauhalliset olosuhteet, että ihmiset pääsisivät nauttimaan jokaiselle luonnostaan kuuluvista yksilönvapauksista ja ihmisoikeuksista. Jotta sota olisi oikeudenmukainen, on tiettyjen ehtojen täytyttävä. Ennen sotaa on pyrittävä ratkaisemaan rauhanomaisesti sotaan johtava syy. Sodassa tulee olla oikeutettu peruste ja realistiset tavoitteet, jotka on esitettävä ennen sotaa. Vain itsepuolustuksellinen sota on oikeutettua. Sotaan voi ryhtyä vain laillinen auktoriteetti. Sodankäynnissä tulee käyttää vain kansainvälisesti hyväksyttyjen sodan sääntöjen sallimia menetelmiä. Tärkeintä sodankäynnissä on ihmisoikeuksien mahdollisimman pitkälle menevä kunnioitus. Sodan tavoitteena on tuottaa enemmän hyvää kuin pahaa. Sodalla saavutetun tilanteen tulee olla parempi kuin sotaa edeltävä tilanne. Sodan tavoitteena on oltava rauha, jonka ehtojen on oltava ennakoitavissa jo sotaa edeltävissä ja sodan aikaisissa toimissa ja sopimuksissa. Terrorisminvastaisten asiakirjojen perusteella Yhdysvallat täyttää terrorisminvastaisessa sodassa oikeudenmukaisen sodan ehdot, lukuunottamatta kaikkien rauhanomaisten keinojen koettelua ja ihmisoikeuksien kunnioitusta. Yhdysvallat vetoaa terrorismin poikkeavaan luonteeseen ja siihen, että terrorismi muodostaa äärimmäisen hätätilanteen. Äärimmäisessä hätätilanteessa on mahdollista toimia niin, että jos toimimalla vastoin oikeudenmukaisen sodan teorian ehtoja saavutetaan parempi lopputulos kuin ehtojen noudattamisella saavutettava lopputulos, on tietyin ehdoin mahdollista jättää osa oikeudenmukaisen sodan ehdoista täyttämättä. Yhdysvaltain mukaan terrorisminvastaisen sodan ihmisuhrit ovat välttämättömiä, jotta saavutetaan enemmän ihmishenkiä säästävä maailmanlaajuinen rauha. Terrorisminvastaisen sodan vankien ihmisoikeusloukkausten taustalla on pyrkimys yleisen turvallisuuden lisäämiseen. Lisäksi Yhdysvallat on vedonnut siihen, että rauhanomaisten neuvottelujen aikana terroristit ehtivät valmistautua tuleviin iskuihin. Yhdysvallat suosii nopeaa ja yllättävää toimintaa, vaikka se pyrkiikiin mahdollisuuksien mukaan rauhanomaisiin ratkaisuihin.

This thesis is grounded on four articles. Article I generally examines the factors affecting dental service utilization. Article II studies the factors associated with sector-specific utilization among young adults entitled to age-based subsidized dental care. Article III explores the determinants of dental ill-health as measured by the occurrence of caries and the relationship between dental ill-health and dental care use. Article IV measures and explains income-related inequality in utilization. Data employed were from the 1996 Finnish Health Care Survey (I, II, IV) and the 1997 follow-up study included in the longitudinal study of the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort (III). Utilization is considered as a multi-stage decision-making process and measured as the number of visits to the dentist. Modified count data models and concentration and horizontal equity indices were applied. Dentist s recall appeared very efficient at stimulating individuals to seek care. Dental pain, recall, and the low number of missing teeth positively affected utilization. Public subvention for dental care did not seem to statistically increase utilization. Among young adults, a perception of insufficient public service availability and recall were positively associated with the choice of a private dentist, whereas income and dentist density were positively associated with the number of visits to private dentists. Among cohort females, factors increasing caries were body mass index and intake of alcohol, sugar, and soft drinks and those reducing caries were birth weight and adolescent school achievement. Among cohort males, caries was positively related to the metropolitan residence and negatively related to healthy diet and education. Smoking increased caries, whereas regular teeth brushing, regular dental attendance and dental care use decreased caries. We found equity in young adults utilization but pro-rich inequity in the total number of visits to all dentists and in the probability of visiting a dentist for the whole sample. We observed inequity in the total number of visits to the dentist and in the probability of visiting a dentist, being pro-poor for public care but pro-rich for private care. The findings suggest that to enhance equal access to and use of dental care across population and income groups, attention should focus on supply factors and incentives to encourage people to contact dentists more often. Lowering co-payments and service fees and improving public availability would likely increase service use in both sectors. To attain favorable oral health, appropriate policies aimed at improving dental health education and reducing the detrimental effects of common risk factors on dental health should be strengthened. Providing equal access with respect to need for all people ought to take account of the segmentation of the service system, with its two parallel delivery systems and different supplier incentives to patients and dentists.

Purpose Road policing is a key method used to improve driver compliance with road laws. However, we have a very limited understanding of the perceptions of young drivers regarding police enforcement of road laws. This paper addresses this gap. Design/Methodology/Approach Within this study 238 young drivers from Queensland, Australia, aged 17-24 years (M = 18, SD = 1.54), with a provisional (intermediate) driver’s licence completed an online survey regarding their perceptions of police enforcement and their driver thrill seeking tendencies. This study considered whether these factors influenced self-reported transient (e.g., travelling speed) and fixed (e.g., blood alcohol concentration) road violations by the young drivers. Findings The results indicate that being detected by police for a traffic offence, and the frequency with which they display P-plates on their vehicle to indicate their licence status, are associated with both self-reported transient and fixed rule violations. Licence type, police avoidance behaviours and driver thrill seeking affected transient rule violations only, while perceptions of police enforcement affected fixed rule violations only. Practical implications This study suggests that police enforcement of young driver violations of traffic laws may not be as effective as expected and that we need to improve the way in which police enforce road laws for young novice drivers. Originality/value: This paper identifies that perceptions of police enforcement by young drivers does not influence all types of road offences.
