[EN]Fundación Zain is developing new built heritage assessment protocols. The goal is to objectivize and standardize the analysis and decision process that leads to determining the degree of protection of built heritage in the Basque Country. The ultimate step in this objectivization and standardization effort will be the development of an information and communication technology (ICT) tool for the assessment of built heritage. This paper presents the ground work carried out to make this tool possible: the automatic, image-based delineation of stone masonry. This is a necessary first step in the development of the tool, as the built heritage that will be assessed consists of stone masonry construction, and many of the features analyzed can be characterized according to the geometry and arrangement of the stones. Much of the assessment is carried out through visual inspection. Thus, this process will be automated by applying image processing on digital images of the elements under inspection. The principal contribution of this paper is the automatic delineation the framework proposed. The other contribution is the performance evaluation of this delineation as the input to a classifier for a geometrically characterized feature of a built heritage object. The element chosen to perform this evaluation is the stone arrangement of masonry walls. The validity of the proposed framework is assessed on real images of masonry walls.

In this thesis we uncover a new relation which links thermodynamics and information theory. We consider time as a channel and the detailed state of a physical system as a message. As the system evolves with time, ever present noise insures that the "message" is corrupted. Thermodynamic free energy measures the approach of the system toward equilibrium. Information theoretical mutual information measures the loss of memory of initial state. We regard the free energy and the mutual information as operators which map probability distributions over state space to real numbers. In the limit of long times, we show how the free energy operator and the mutual information operator asymptotically attain a very simple relationship to one another. This relationship is founded on the common appearance of entropy in the two operators and on an identity between internal energy and conditional entropy. The use of conditional entropy is what distinguishes our approach from previous efforts to relate thermodynamics and information theory.

The importance of the process of Neolithization for the genetic make-up of European populations has been hotly debated, with shifting hypotheses from a demic diffusion (DD) to a cultural diffusion (CD) model. In this regard, ancient DNA data from the Balkan Peninsula, which is an important source of information to assess the process of Neolithization in Europe, is however missing. In the present study we show genetic information on ancient populations of the South-East of Europe. We assessed mtDNA from ten sites from the current territory of Romania, spanning a time-period from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age. mtDNA data from Early Neolithic farmers of the Starcevo Cris culture in Romania (Carcea, Gura Baciului and Negrilesti sites), confirm their genetic relationship with those of the LBK culture (Linienbandkeramik Kultur) in Central Europe, and they show little genetic continuity with modern European populations. On the other hand, populations of the Middle-Late Neolithic (Boian, Zau and Gumelnita cultures), supposedly a second wave of Neolithic migration from Anatolia, had a much stronger effect on the genetic heritage of the European populations. In contrast, we find a smaller contribution of Late Bronze Age migrations to the genetic composition of Europeans. Based on these findings, we propose that permeation of mtDNA lineages from a second wave of Middle-Late Neolithic migration from North-West Anatolia into the Balkan Peninsula and Central Europe represent an important contribution to the genetic shift between Early and Late Neolithic populations in Europe, and consequently to the genetic make-up of modern European populations.

The crosstalk between naive nucleus and maternal factors deposited in egg cytoplasm before zygotic genome activation is crucial for early development. In this study, we utilized two laboratory fishes, zebrafish (Danio rerio) and Chinese rare minnow and Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus), to obtain mutual crossbred embroys and examine the interaction between nucleus and egg cytoplasm from different species. Although these two types of crossbred embryos originated from common nuclei, various developmental capacities were gained due to different origins of the egg cytoplasm. Using cDNA amplified fragment length polymorphism (cDNA-AFLP), We Compared transcript profiles between the mutual crossbred embryos at two developmental stages (50%- and 90%-epiholy). Three thousand cDNA fragments were generated in four cDNA pools with 64 primer combinations. All differently displayed transcript-derived fragments (TDFs) were screened by (lot blot hybridization, and the selected sequences were further analyzed by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Compared with ZR embryos, 12 genes were up-regulated and 12 were down-regulated in RZ embryos. The gene fragments were sequenced and subjected to BLASTN analysis. The sequences encoded various proteins which functioned at various levels of proliferation, growth, and development. One gene (ZR6), dramatically down-regulated in RZ embryos, was chosen for loss-of-function study; the knockdown of ZR6 gave rise to the phenotype resembling that of RZ embryos. (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. This paper is part of a larger PhD research project examining the apparent conflict in UK planning between energy efficiency and conservation for the retrofit of the thermal envelope of the existing building stock. Review of the literature shows that the UK will not meet its 2050 emission reduction target without substantial improvement to the energy performance of the thermal envelope of the existing building stock and that significantly, 40% of the existing stock has heritage status and may be exempted from Building Regulations. A review of UK policy and legislation shows that there are clear national priorities towards reducing emissions and addressing climate change, yet also shows a movement towards local decision making and control. This paper compares the current status of thirteen London Boroughs in respect to their position on thermal envelope retrofit for heritage and traditionally constructed buildings. Data collection is through ongoing surveys and interviews that compare statistical data, planning policies, sustainability and environmental priorities, and Officer decision-making. This paper finds that there is a lack of consistency in application of planning policy across Boroughs and suggests that this is a barrier to the up-take of energy efficient retrofit. Various recommendations are suggested at both national and local level which could help UK planning and planning officers deliver more energy efficient heritage retrofits.

We study the mutual passivation of shallow donor and isovalent N in GaAs. We find that all the donor impurities, Si-Ga, Ge-Ga, S-As, and Se-As, bind to N in GaAsN, which has a large N-induced band-gap reduction relative to GaAs. For a group-IV impurity such as Si, the formation of the nearest-neighbor Si-Ga-N-As defect complex creates a deep donor level below the conduction band minimum (CBM). The coupling between this defect level with the CBM pushes the CBM upwards, thus restoring the GaAs band gap; the lowering of the defect level relative to the isolated Si-Ga shallow donor level is responsible for the increased electrical resistivity. Therefore, Si and N mutually passivate each other's electrical and optical activities in GaAs. For a group-VI shallow donor such as S, the binding between S-As and N-As does not form a direct bond; therefore, no mutual passivation exists in the GaAs(S+N) system.

We study the essential roles of self and mutual inductances in superconducting charge qubits and propose a scheme to couple charge qubits by means of mutual inductance. We also show that the Hamiltonians can be exactly formulated in compact forms in the spin-1/2 representation for both single- and double-qubit structures.
