As a part of the Russian-German project "Siberian River-Runoff (SIRRO)" the major element composition of the dissolved load and the major and trace element composition of particulate load and bottom sediment of the Yenisei River and Estuary were analyzed and examined in context of the basin lithology and climate. In addition, the processes controlling the transformation of the river load in the estuarine mixing zone were investigated. The chemical composition of the dissolved and particulate load of the Yenisei fluvial endmember is generally comparable to that of other major world rivers. The dissolved load is chiefly controlled by carbonate weathering and the chemical composition of the river suspended particulate matter (SPM) is similar to that of the North American Shale Composite (NASC), which represents the weathering product of the upper continental crust. The Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) of the Yenisei SPM amounts to 71, which indicates moderate chemical weathering. With regard to the SPM geochemistry, the Yenisei occupies an intermediate position between the adjacent rivers Khatanga and the Lena. Drastic changes in the composition of the river load are seen in the mixing zone between fresh and salt water. While dissolved Na, Ca, Mg, K, CI, S04, F, Br, Sr and HC03 behave conservatively, dissolved Fe is completely removed from solution at very low salinities. Particulate Mn exhibits a pronounced mid-salinity minimum concomitant with a maximum of dissolved Mn, which is probably related to suboxic conditions in the area of the so-called "marginal filter", where highest turbidities are found. The Mn-minimum in SPM is paralleled by depletions of the elements Ba, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu and V, which can be associated with manganese particles. The estuarine bottom sediments are composed of mud and sand and the sedimentological parameters of the bottom sediments have to be considered for the interpretation of the bulk geochemical data. The chemical composition of the mud is comparable to the SPM, whereas the sand is relatively enriched in Si/Al, Ba/Al, Zr/Al and Sr/Al ratios and depleted in transition metals.

In recognition of a central role of the kidney in long-term blood pressure control, we undertook an in-depth analysis of the relationship between blood pressure and kidney damage caused by environmental exposure to the common pollutants cadmium and lead. The subjects were 200 healthy Thais, 16 and 60 years of age (100 female non-smokers, 53 male non-smokers, and 47 male smokers). None of these subjects had been exposed to Cd or Pb in the workplace and their urinary Cd concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 37 nM, whereas their urinary Pb concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 30 nM. The prevalence of high blood pressure was 2%, 8% and 19%, respectively in subjects with low, average and high Cd-burden (linear trend chi(2) = 6.4, P = 0.01). Multiple regression analysis revealed a significant positive association between Cd-burden and blood pressure in male nonsmokers (adjusted beta = 0.31, P = 0.02) and an inverse association between blood pressure and urinary Pb excretion rate in male smokers (adjusted beta = -0.38, P = 0.005). Associations between Cd-burden and nephropathies were evidenced by increases in urinary excretion of beta 2-microglobutin (P = 0.02) and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (P = 0.005) in subjects with high Cd-burden, compared with the subjects with average Cd-burden. In addition, an association between Cd-related nephropathy and high blood pressure was evidenced by a 20% increase in the prevalence of high blood pressure in people with NAG-uria (linear trend chi(2) = 4.3, P = 0.04). Our present study provides first evidence for a possible link between renal tubular damage and dysfunction caused by environmental Cd exposure and increased risk of high blood pressure. Cadmium (Cd) is a metal toxin of continuing worldwide concern. Daily intake of Cd, albeit in small quantities, is associated with a number of adverse health effects which are attributable to distinct pathological changes in a variety of tissues and organs. In the present review, we focus on its renal tubular effects in people who have been exposed environmentally to Cd at levels below the provisional tolerable intake level set for the toxin. We highlight the data linking such low-level Cd intake with tubular injury, altered abundance of cytochromes P450 (CYPs) in the kidney and an expression of a hypertensive phenotype. We provide updated knowledge on renal and vascular effects of the eicosanoids 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) and eicosatrienoic acids (EETs), which are biologically active metabolites from arachidonate metabolism mediated by certain CYPs in the kidney. We note the ability of Cd to elicit oxidative stress and to alter metal homeostasis notably of zinc which may lead to augmentation of the defense mechanisms involving induction of the antioxidant enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and the metal binding protein metallothionein (MT) in the kidney. We hypothesize that renal Cd accumulation triggers the host responses mediated by HO-I and MT in an attempt to protect the kidney against injurious oxidative stress and to resist a rise in blood pressure levels. This hypothesis predicts that individuals with less active HO-1 (caused by the HO-1 genetic polymorphisms) are more likely to have renal injury and express a hypertensive phenotype following chronic ingestion of low-level Cd, compared with those having more active HO-1. Future analytical and molecular epidemiologic research should pave the way to the utility of induction of heme oxygenases together with dietary antioxidants in reducing the risk of kidney injury and hypertension in susceptible people.

Chitosan is a natural polymer obtained by deacetylation of chitin. After cellulose chitin is the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature. It is biologically safe, non-toxic, biocompatible and biodegradable polysaccharide. Chitosan loaded with zinc oxide nanoparticles have gained more attention bio sorbent because of their better stability, low toxicity, simple and mild preparation method and high sorption capacity. Chitosan loaded with zinc oxide nanoparticles have been prepared of chitosan. The physicochemical properties of nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Analysis. Its sorption capacity for lead and cadmium ions studied. Factors such as initial concentration of lead ions, cadmium ions sorbent amount, contact time, pH and temperature were investigated. It is found that chitosan loaded with zinc oxide nanoparticles could sorb lead and cadmium ions effectively, this sorption rate was affected significantly by initial concentration of lead and cadmium ions, sorbent amount, contact time, pH of solution. The maximum of percentage of lead sorption was 98 % with initial concentration 3 mg/l and sorbent amount 0.05 g, pH 11 in 45 min and cadmiumwas90 %with initial concentration 3mg/l and sorbent amount 0.05 g, pH 11 in45 min. Consequently chitosan loaded with zinc oxide nanoparticles demonstrated greater fixation ability for lead ions than cadmium ions.

The time for conducting Preventive Maintenance (PM) on an asset is often determined using a predefined alarm limit based on trends of a hazard function. In this paper, the authors propose using both hazard and reliability functions to improve the accuracy of the prediction particularly when the failure characteristic of the asset whole life is modelled using different failure distributions for the different stages of the life of the asset. The proposed method is validated using simulations and case studies.

Lead is present everywhere in the environment and has been defined as one of the greatest threats to the human health. In this paper, attempts have been made to study a way of recycling the lead produced from waste usage and disposed of in such a way as to avoid degrading the surrounding environment. In order to contain the waste, recycled asphalt material is mixed with the lead and then heated with microwave energy. This is an attempt to solidify and reduce the lead contaminants and use the final product as sub-base material in road pavement construction. The microwave heating of the specimens is carried out with 30%, 50%, 80% and 100% of power at 800W. The optimum power mode is used to compare with the conventional heating of asphalt with sulfur additive. The results are characterized by compact density, permeability, and subjected to toxicity test with regards to lead concentration. A mechanical test to evaluate the stability is also performed on the three methods of solidification and to prove that microwave zapping method allow to convert into an environmentally stable material for recycling without having to be deposited in a landfill site.

Construction sector application of Lead Indicators generally and Positive Performance Indicators (PPIs) particularly, are largely seen by the sector as not providing generalizable indicators of safety effectiveness. Similarly, safety culture is often cited as an essential factor in improving safety performance, yet there is no known reliable way of measuring safety culture. This paper proposes that the accurate measurement of safety effectiveness and safety culture is a requirement for assessing safe behaviours, safety knowledge, effective communication and safety performance. Currently there are no standard national or international safety effectiveness indicators (SEIs) that are accepted by the construction industry. The challenge is that quantitative survey instruments developed for measuring safety culture and/ or safety climate are inherently flawed methodologically and do not produce reliable and representative data concerning attitudes to safety. Measures that combine quantitative and qualitative components are needed to provide a clear utility for safety effectiveness indicators.
