Seven hundred and nineteen samples from throughout the Cainozoic section in CRP-3 were analysed by a Malvern Mastersizes laser particle analyser, in order to derive a stratigraphic distribution of grain-size parameters downhole. Entropy analysis of these data (using the method of Woolfe & Michibayashi, 1995) allowed recognition of four groups of samples, each group characterised by a distinctive grain-size distribution. Group 1, which shows a multi-modal distribution, corresponds to mudrocks, interbedded mudrock/sandstone facies, muddy sandstones and diamictites. Group 2, with a sand-grade mode but showing wide dispersion of particle size, corresponds to muddy sandstones, a few cleaner sandstones and some conglomerates. Group 3 and Group 4 are also sand-dominated, with better grain-size sorting, and correspond to clean, well-washed sandstones of varying mean grain-size (medium and fine modes, respectively). The downhole disappearance of Group 1, and dominance of Groups 3 and 4 reflect a concomitant change from mudrock- and diamictite-rich lithology to a section dominated by clean, well-washed sandstones with minor conglomerates. Progressive downhole increases in percentage sand and principal mode also reflect these changes. Significant shifts in grain-size parameters and entropy group membership were noted across sequence boundaries and seismic reflectors, as recognised in other studies.

It is a well-known and well-studied fact that after the 1979 revolution, Iran's economy went through a process of fundamental change and as a result a totally different economic system was established. Among the most remarkable changes was the emergence of so-called para-statal organizations, which were supervised by some institution within the state, while not being controlled by the government. Because of their politically strong position, they enjoy many privileges such as tax exemption or easy access to credit. Although deeply regarded as one of the most striking features of the postrevolution economic system, published studies about para-statal entities have been very limited so far. In this paper, I will focus on one of the biggest para-statal organizations, Mostaz`afan (Oppressed) Foundation. I will attempt to examine the historical and political background behind the formation and transformation of this conglomerate, its system of corporate governance, and its economic scale and scope over the past 35 years. Para-statal conglomerates together with state owned companies are going to be the two most important pillars of Iran's economy in the foreseeable future. Understanding their history will not only help us learn about the current economic system of Iran, but also give us some insight into the future of the economy, too.

The tsunami deposits of the valley of Agaete (Pérez-Torrado et al., 2006), north-western Gran Canaria, attributed to the Guimar flank collapse in Tenerife, have been revisited and new data are presented here. Besides the occurrences reported by Pérez-Torrado et al. (2006) a new outcrop was found and named “La Ruina” (at 28º 05’ 47,41” N; 15º 41’ 52,04” W; 71 m asl). The above-mentioned authors suggested the possibility that more than one marine conglomerate deposit could be present in the outcrops of “Llanos de Turmán” and “Berrazales”. At “La Gasolinera” and “La Aldea 1” the conglomerates are formed by a single layer representing one depositional event; at “La Aldea 2”, the conglomerates are composed of two layers directly contacting with each other, but evidence of a time hiatus between them was not found. Although the hypothesis of stacking of two depositional units within the same episode versus deposition of two distinct layers in different time-moments is debatable at the present state of knowledge, the first possibility is favoured. The field evidence at “Llanos de Turman” and “Berrazales” unquestionably shows that terrestrial sediments (colluvia; paleosols) are present and separate two marine conglomerate deposits, indicating that at least two distinct tsunami inundations are needed to explain the stratigraphy. However, at the new “La Ruina” outcrop, besides the two deposits mentioned above, a third and older marine conglomerate was found, clearly separated in time from the ones cited above. The existence of marine conglomerates emplaced in different moments is evidenced by the occurrence of intercalated paleosols, colluvia and other subaerial materials, implying significant time intervals between the emplacement of marine conglomeratic layers. A number of gastropod operculae from the tsunamiites were sent for U-Th dating to try to further constrain the age span of these deposits. The field evidence presented above shows that the emplacement of the deposits is related to, at least, three tsunami events. The lateral correlation between different outcrops is difficult due to variable number of deposits in each outcrop, lateral discontinuity and variability, and to compositional and textural similarity between distinct tsunami sediments. The occurrence of three Pleistocene tsunami deposits in the same area points to a relatively high frequency of tsunamis (generated by landslides, surface rupturing earthquakes, fast entry of voluminous volcanic deposits into the sea or large submarine eruptions). It is possible that this recurrence of tsunami inundations may reflect multiple-phased landslides responsible for the mega-landslide scars prominent in the geomorphology of the neighbouring island of Tenerife.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake, occurred on January 12th at 16:53:09 local time (21:53:09 UTC) with epicentral distance of 15 km from the capital Port au Prince, MW 7.0 and 13 km hypocenter deep, was the strongest event in the area since happened in 1770. The maximum macroseismic intensity was estimated as X (MMI scale). The aim of this research is to obtain a preliminary zonation of Port-au-Prince in terms of predominant resonance periods of ground. A total of 36 short-period ambient noise records have been carried out on a grid of about 500x500m. H/V spectral ratio method (HVSR) has been applied to determine the predominant period at each point. The lowest values (<0.2s) predominate in the southern part of the city, composed by Miocene conglomerates, while highest values (> 0.45s) correspond to the center and western parts, composed of Pleistocene-Holocene alluvial deposits and anthropogenic land reclaimed from the sea. We have determined the ground VS30 structure inside National Palace garden, using simultaneous ambient noise measurements. An array made up of 6 sensors were used, with 5 of them uniformly distributed along a circumference and a sixth one placed in its centre. The records were analyzed by using the spatial autocorrelation method (SPAC). The VS 30 value obtained was 331m/sec, in good agreement with the average values obtained for this area by other authors, using prospecting techniques.

In order to evaluate ground shaking characteristics due to surface soil layers in the urban area of Port-au-Prince, short-period ambient noise observation has been performed approximately in a 500x500m grid. The HVSR method was applied to this set of 36 ambient noise measurement points to determine a distribution map of soil predominant periods. This map reveals a general increasing trend in the period values, from the Miocene conglomerates in the northern and southern parts of the town to the central and western zones formed of Pleistocene and Holocene alluvial deposits respectively, where the shallow geological materials that cover the basement increase in thickness. Shorter predominant periods (less than 0.3 s) were found in mountainous and neighbouring zones, where the thickness of sediments is smaller whereas longer periods (greater than 0.5 s) appear in Holocene alluvial fans, where the thickness of sediments is larger. The shallow shear-wave velocity structure have been estimated by means of inversion of Rayleigh wave dispersion data obtained from vertical-component array records of ambient noise. The measurements were carried out at one open space located in Holocene alluvial deposits, using 3 regular pentagonal arrays with 5, 10 and 20m respectively. Reliable dispersion curves were retrieved for frequencies between 4.0 and 14 Hz, with phase velocity values ranging from 420m/s down to 270 m/s. Finally, the average shear-wave velocity of the upper 30 m (VS30) was inverted for characterization of this geological unit.

In a region as large as Spain, annual mean recharge is shown to be a fixed proportion of the mean rainfall for each lithology. This determination is based on statistical inferences from a complete sample of 875 springs for which mean flow and catchment areas are known and which have been grouped into distinct rainfall regions. Recharge rates have thus been established with respect to rainfall for six lithological groups with different permeability: sands, gravels and generally alluvial formations, 8.3%; conglomerates, 5.6%; sandstones, 7.3%; limestone and dolomite 34.3%; marls, marly limestones, silts and clays, 3.3%; and hard rocks, 1.3%. Considering the representativeness of Spain, which is large in size and has a highly varied lithology, topography and rainfall, these recharge rates for rainfall are probably quasi-universal values that can be used to estimate average recharge or average groundwater resources of large regions in any part of the world (except in special cases such as areas with permafrost, for example). For any case, these recharge rates can be adapted to each region according to its particular characteristics. Rainfall and lithology data are very common, and so the method can be widely used to calculate hydraulic balances.

ABSTRACT The accumulation of the anthropogenic greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is the main responsible for: i) the increase in the average temperature of the Earth over the past century by almost 1 °C; ii) the rise in the mean sea level; iii) the drop of the ice volume and terrestrial snow; iv) the strong climate variability and extreme weather events that have been happening over the last decades; and v) the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases. All of these events are just some of the evidence of current climate change. The problems and growing concern related to these phenomena, prompted the adoption of the so-called "Kyoto Protocol" (Japan) in 1997, in which the signatory countries established different measurements to control and reduce the emissions of the greenhouse gases. These measurements include the CCS technologies, focused on the capture, transport and storage of CO2. Within this context, it was approved, in October 2008, the Strategic Singular Project "Tecnologías avanzadas de generación, captura y almacenamiento de CO2" (PSE-120000-2008-6), supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the FEDER funds. This Project, by means of the Subproject "Geological Storage of CO2" (PSS- 120000-2008-31), was focused on the detailed study of the Natural Analogue of CO2 Storage and Leakage located in the Ganuelas-Mazarron Tertiary basin (Murcia), among other Spanish Natural Analogues. This research work has been performed in the framework of this Subproject, being its final objective to predict the behaviour and evaluate the safety, at short, medium and long-term, of a CO2 Deep Geological Storage (CO2-DGS) by means of a comprehensive study of the abovementioned Natural Analogue. This study comprises: i) the geological and hydrogeological context of the basin and its geophysical research; ii) the water sampling of the selected aquifers to establish their hydrogeochemical and isotopic features; iii) the mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical and isotopic characterisation of the travertines formed from upwelling groundwater of several hydrogeological and geothermal wells; and iv) the measurement of the free and dissolved gases detected in the basin, as well as their chemical and isotopic characterisation, mainly regarding CO2 and 222Rn. This information, summarised in separate chapters in the text, has enabled to build a conceptual model of the studied natural system and to establish the analogies between both the studied natural system and a CO2-DGS, with possible natural and/or anthropogenic escapes. All this information has served, firstly, to predict the behaviour and to evaluate the safety, at short, medium and long-term, of a CO2-DGS and, secondly, to propose a general methodology to study suitable sites for a CO2-DGS, taking into account the lessons learned from this CO2 natural reservoir. The main results indicate that the Ganuelas-Mazarron basin is a graben bounded by normal faults with significant vertical movements, which move down the metamorphic substrate (Nevado-Filabride Complex), and filled with acid volcanic-subvolcanic rocks. Furthermore, this basin is filled with two sedimentary formations: i) the Miocene marls, which are predominant and almost exclusive in the basin; xxiv and ii) the Plio-Quaternary conglomerates and gravels. A deep saline CO2-rich aquifer was evidenced in this basin as a result of the geothermal exploration wells performed during the 80s, located just at the top of the Nevado-Filabride Complex and at a depth that could exceed 800 m, according to the geophysical exploration performed. This saline CO2-rich aquifer is precisely the main object of this study. Therefore, it is not discarded the possibility that the CO2 in this aquifer be in supercritical state. Consequently, the aforementioned basin gathers the main characteristics of a natural and deep CO2 geological storage, or natural analogue of a CO2-DGS in a deep saline aquifer. The overexploitation of the shallow aquifers in this basin for agriculture purposes caused the drop of the groundwater levels and hydrostatic pressures, and, as a result, the ascent of the deep saline and CO2-rich groundwater, which is the responsible for the contamination of the shallow and fresh aquifers. The hydrogeochemical features of groundwater from the investigated aquifers show the presence of very different hydrofacies, even in those with similar lithology. The high salinity of this groundwater prevents the human and agricultural uses. In addition, the slightly acidic character of most of these waters determines their capacity to dissolve and transport towards the surface heavy and/or toxic elements, among which U is highlighted. This element is abundant in the acidic volcanic rocks of the basin, with concentrations up to 14 ppm, mainly as sub-microscopic uraninite crystals. The isotopic study of this groundwater, particularly the isotopic signature of C from DIC (δ13C-DIC), suggests that dissolved C can be explained considering a mixture of C from two main different sources: i) from the thermal decomposition of limestones and marbles forming the substrate; and ii) from edaphic origin. However, a minor contribution of C from mantle degassing cannot be discarded. The study of travertines being formed from upwelling groundwater of several hydrogeological and geothermal wells, as a result of the fast CO2 degassing and the pH increase, has allowed highlighting this phenomenon, by analogy, as an alert for the CO2 leakages from a CO2-DGS. The analysis of the dissolved and free gases, with special attention to CO2 and 222Rn, indicates that the C from the dissolved and free CO2 has a similar origin to that of the DIC. The R/Ra ratio of He corroborates the minor contribution of CO2 from the mantle degassing. Furthermore, 222Rn is generated by the radioactive decay of U, particularly abundant in the volcanic rocks of the basin, and/or by 226Ra from the U or from the Messinian gypsum in the basin. Moreover, CO2 acts as a carrier of the 222Rn, a fact evidenced by the positive anomalies of both gases at ~ 1 m depth and mainly related to natural (faults and contacts) and anthropogenic (wells) perturbations. The isotopic signature of C from DIC, carbonates (travertines), and dissolved and free CO2, suggests that this parameter can be used as an excellent tracer of CO2 escapes from a CO2-DGS, in which CO2 usually from the combustion of fossil fuels, with δ13C(V-PDB) of ~ -30 ‰, will be injected. All of these results have allowed to build a conceptual model of the behaviour of the natural system studied as a natural analogue of a CO2-DGS, as well as to establish the relationships between both natural xxv and artificial systems. Thus, the most important analogies, regarding the elements of the system, would be the presence of: i) a deep saline CO2-rich aquifer, which would be analogous to the storage formation of a CO2-DGS; ii) a marly sedimentary formation with a thickness greater than 500 m, which would correspond to the sealing formation of a CO2-DGS; and iii) shallow aquifers with fresh waters suitable for human consumption, U-rich volcanic rocks, and faults that are sealed by gypsums and/or marls; geological elements that could also be present in a CO2-DGS. On the other hand, the most important analogous processes identified are: i) the upward injection of CO2, which would be analogous to the downward injection of the anthropogenic CO2, this last with a δ13C(V-PDB) of ~ -30 ‰; ii) the dissolution of CO2 and 222Rn in groundwater of the deep aquifer, which would be analogous to the dissolution of these gases in the storage formation of a CO2-DGS; iii) the contamination of the shallow aquifers by the uprising of CO2-oversaturated groundwater, an analogous process to the contamination that would occur in shallow aquifers located above a CO2-DGS, whenever it was naturally (reactivation of faults) or artificially (wells) perturbed; iv) the degassing (CO2 and associated gases, among which 222Rn is remarkable) of the deep saline aquifer through wells, process which could be similar in a perturbed CO2- DGS; v) the rapid formation of travertines, indicating that the CO2-DGS has lost its seal capacity. The identification of the most important analogies has also allowed analysing and evaluating, approximately, the behaviour and safety in the short, medium and long term, of a CO2-DGS hosted in a similar geological context of the natural system studied. For that, it has been followed the methodology based on the analysis and identification of FEPs (Features, Events and Processes) that have been combined together in order to generate and analyse different scenarios of the system evolution (scenario analysis). These identified scenarios in the perturbed natural system, related to boreholes, overexploitation of aquifers, rapid precipitation of travertines, etc., would be similar to those that might occur in a CO2-DGS anthropogenically perturbed, so that it is absolutely necessary to avoid the artificial perturbation of the seal formation of a CO2-DGS. Finally, a useful methodology for the study of possible sites for a CO2-DGS is suggested based on the information obtained from this investigation, taking into account the lessons learned from this CO2 natural reservoir. This methodology comprises several phases of study, including the geological and structural characterisation of the site and its components (water, rock and gases), the identification of the analogies between a CO2 storage natural system and a conceptual model of a CO2-DGS, and the implications regarding the behaviour and safety of a CO2-DGS.

The well-known eponym El Sidrón has a very special history. It started with the development of a karstic system between two types of rock (sandstone and Neogene conglomerates) as a result of the flow of a small stream. It continued with the use of the cave as a refuge and a hiding place during the Spanish Civil War and the aftermath and with the presence of some endemic species of bats and cave insects

ABSTRACT - During the last 30 years, many institutions have been evaluating and endless range of variables in practically all of the world´s economies. This Thesis is the product of a detail analysis of more than one hundred indicators / index, which we have divided into two parts: those focused on development and those focused on economic competitiveness (see module I annex). Secondly, in our theoretical research we have concentrated on those indicators, which are related to technology (chapters 3, section 3.3). The selection criteria of the six economic groups to be evaluated are included in our methodology, as mentioned in the hypothesis (see section 2.2.). Subsequently the calculation procedure is also presented for all of the groups selected between the periods 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. Next, we perform a statistical study, which is presented accordingly in the segment dealing with statistics, section 3.4.4.5. The calculations are provided in modules I, II, III, IV and V annex. After the methods segment of the Thesis, we develop our argument, in which we presented the explanation of the relations as well as the interpretation of the results. Also at the chapter 4 you can find the result validation from 2007 till 2015. Finally in chapters 6, we evaluate the conclusions for the six economic groups (see section 6.2.). The Thesis scientifically explains the way in which we evaluate economic competitiveness in 135 countries from a standpoint of strictly technological variables. Six groups of countries are evaluated, being divided by criteria, which homogenize the economies under review. We recognize that the variables of each economic group should be prioritized in order to better their competitiveness. Initially the group consisted of 68 variables, a number which was considerably reduced after the implementation of our methodology. Likewise, these final variables, dubbed “key performance indicators”, were grouped into factors (key performance factors), which greatly simplify the prioritization process. At the same time, conglomerates have been created for each economic group according to their value concerning the selected variables. A detailed country – by – country analysis of their positioning in each of the six groups was conducted for each of the mathematically selected key performance indicators. Finally, at the Conclusion we introduce new research lines and between them we focus on two research lines in which ones we are working with (see chapter 6). We basically try to apply the multivariable analysis method, the factorial analysis and the conglomerates to designed and implemented our method first in a geographically group of countries (Africa) and secondly to evaluate and develop the public policies for Spain for the development of its competitively, comparing Spain to his coetaneous countries in Europe (see Module VIII). The main objective of this Doctoral Thesis is to noticeably simplify the comparison of the Network Readiness Index and its relation with the economic competitiveness of the countries using a new synthetic index design by us.

ABSTRACT Historically the location strategies of the catholic religious infrastructure in Chile has been conditioned by intentions aimed at attracting and guardianship of parishioners, process developed through interventions that have generated externalities difficult to anticipate and possible to visualize in a in a major temporary frame. In this context, the production and installation of the catholic churches in different places in the city determined the territories and marked presence in their quest to colonize and maintain domain, mechanism of the religious institution that was adapted to the environment and in the political and social circumstances to fulfill its mission and maintain power. This research sought to identify from the buildings intended for worship in a multi-scale relationship between location, the placement mode, morphology and shape and construction technique and the effect caused by them, the way how they alter the environments and the expectations that are open to new interventions. The chosen scenario for the study corresponded to a not documented period in the history of the city of Santiago de Chile in which political, economic, social and cultural circumstances contributed to the form of disposition of the buildings of worship that determined the urban development and guided the growth of the city. The study period was the epoch of largest material and cultural wealth of Chile history and it was modeled by the intentions and development plans tending to consolidate what has been named the Republican ideal. Scenario in which public space gained interest and became the engine of change and indicator of the scale of the city, establishing the conditions for the various European trends manifested themselves in transforming the original image of the colonial city. This process that took place on the existing structure, produced a higher density of the original blocks through the predial compartimentation, which supplemented with technological advances enabled greater building heights, a situation that gave rise to new spatial conceptions, possible of developing with the material resources, intellectuals and technicians available at the moment. The study focused on the century 1850-1950 by analyzing how the Catholic religious infrastructure was located in the urban fabric by adopting different typologies locality, in an epoch characterised by architectural eclecticism. Specifica lly, it is studied the buildings that used gothic reminiscences, identifying the most significant cases, establishing the context in which they originated and inquiring about the significance that they had for the role it played, considering location and connection to the built environment, shaping, dimensions, destination, and sponsorships. The study area was established by the concentration of buildings with this historicist trend, productions that in the short and medium term guided the transformation of the city and the presence that keeps up to these days. It was noted the incidence of the of the Catholic Church actions in guiding State policies, planning decisions and occupation of the territory, as well as conditioning the location of the temples in order to achieve greater coverage of the population and the greatest return on investment. In the context of Latin America the construction of churches, temples and cathedrals with reminiscences gothic was a constant that characterized the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the first three decades of the twentieth century. The study allowed to know in quantitative and qualitative terms the production of the period, highlighting the morphology and materiality characterized by contemporary and structurally challenging strategies. It was noted the use of architecture as a means of approaching to the population, able to transform buildings into neighborhood symbols, which facilitated the production of identity, to become the reference materials that stand out, that will be remembered and that assume the representativeness of neighborhoods, remaining in the time and becoming icons associated with the local culture. In synthesis, the installation of religious infrastructure in the city of Santiago was result of a mode of production, that provided meeting places and symbols for the city, through the location of buildings that sought to occupy visible, relevant and summoning areas, what they obtained by means of the geographical, central and equidistant installation of consolidated residential conglomerates cluster or about to development, as also through always outstanding and monumental buildings with respect to its surroundings, which marked uniqueness and domain. The choice of architectural types was related to the time and inspired by intellectuals and professionals mostly outsiders who contributed with expertise and experience to sponsor buildings were recognized as outstanding and precursor of the time. The intensity of use of the resources that requested the demanding structures forced to the Catholic church to establish funding strategies designed to compensate for the lack of funds from the State. For which convened to different actors who participated from their borders and depending on their interests covering from the altruism up to the rentabilización of its patrimony. The Catholic Church organization behaves the same way as any other organization: seeks to expand, focus, control and manage. Looking for coding the entire environment (Raffestin, 2011), seeks to transcend and succeeds materially from its building.

Newly synthesized membrane proteins travel from the Golgi complex to the cell surface in transport vesicles. We have exploited the ion channel properties of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) to observe in real time the constitutive delivery of newly synthesized AChR proteins to the plasma membrane in cultured muscle cells. Whole-cell voltage clamp was employed to monitor the current fluctuations induced by carbamylcholine upon the insertion into the plasma membrane of newly synthesized AChRs, following release from a 20 degrees C temperature block. We find that the transit of vesicles to the cell surface occurs within a few minutes after release of the block. The time course of electrical signals is consistent with many of the fusion events being instantaneous, although some appear to reveal the flickering of a fusion pore. AChR-containing vesicles can fuse individually or as conglomerates. Intracellular application of guanosine 5'-[gamma-thio]triphosphate inhibits the constitutive traffic of AChRs in most cells. Individual exocytotic vesicles carry between 10 and 300 AChR molecules, suggesting that AChRs may be packed extremely densely.

A study has been performed on the Cretaceous to Early Miocene succession of the Vrancea Nappe (Outer Carpathians, Romania), based on field reconstruction of the stratigraphic record, mineralogical-petrographic and geochemical analyses. Extra-basinal clastic supply and intra-basinal autochthonous deposits have been differentiated, appearing laterally inter-fingered and/or interbedded. The main clastic petrofacies consist of calcarenites, sub-litharenites, quartzarenites, sub-arkoses, and polygenic conglomerates derived from extra-basinal margins. An alternate internal and external provenance of the different supplies is the result of the paleogeographic re-organization of the basin/margins system due to tectonic activation and exhumation of rising areas. The intra-basinal deposits consist of black shales and siliceous sediments (silexites and cherty beds), evidencing major environmental changes in the Moldavidian Basin. Organic-matter-rich black shales were deposited during anoxic episodes related to sediment starvation and high nutrient influx due to paleogeographic isolation of the basin caused by plate drifting. The black shales display relatively high contents in sub-mature to mature, Type II lipidic organic matter (good oil and gas-prone source rocks) constituting a potentially active petroleum system. The intra-basinal siliceous sediments are related to oxic pelagic or hemipelagic environments under tectonic quiescence conditions although its increase in the Oligocene part of the succession can be correlated with volcanic supplies. The integration of all the data in the “progressive reorientation of convergence direction” Carpathian model, and their consideration in the framework of a foreland basin, led to propose some constrains on the paleogeographic-geodynamic evolutionary model of the Moldavidian Basin from the Late Cretaceous to the Burdigalian.
