Psychophysical studies suggest that humans preferentially use a narrow band of low spatial frequencies for face recognition. Here we asked whether artificial face recognition systems have an improved recognition performance at the same spatial frequencies as humans. To this end, we estimated recognition performance over a large database of face images by computing three discriminability measures: Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis, Non-Parametric Discriminant Analysis, and Mutual Information. In order to address frequency dependence, discriminabilities were measured as a function of (filtered) image size. All three measures revealed a maximum at the same image sizes, where the spatial frequency content corresponds to the psychophysical found frequencies. Our results therefore support the notion that the critical band of spatial frequencies for face recognition in humans and machines follows from inherent properties of face images, and that the use of these frequencies is associated with optimal face recognition performance.

Au coeur même du premier paquet de sept accords bilatéraux conclu entre la Suisse et la Communauté européenne le 21 juin 1999, l'Accord sur la libre circulation des personnes (ALCP) vise à garantir la libre circulation et à faciliter la prestation de services sur le territoire des parties contractantes. Or la réalisation de ces objectifs dépend avant tout de la mise en oeuvre effective de l'interdiction de discrimination en raison de la nationalité consacrée par l'ALCP, véritable clé de voûte de l'Accord. Le présent ouvrage s'attache, dans un premier temps, à l'analyse du principe de libre circulation et à l'examen du fonctionnement de l'ALCP - examen portant notamment sur le rôle joué par la jurisprudence de la Cour de justice des Communautés européennes dans le cadre de l'interprétation de cet Accord (Partie I). Dans un second temps, cet ouvrage se penche sur la question centrale de l'interdiction de discrimination en raison de la nationalité (Partie II). Pour ce faire, il propose tout d'abord une définition de la notion de discrimination elle-même et détermine ensuite le champ d'application matériel et personnel des principales dispositions de l'ALCP interdisant les discriminations. Dans ce cadre, une attention toute particulière est accordée à la question de la potentielle portée horizontale de ces dispositions. Ensuite, l'ouvrage procède à une analyse complète des principes et dispositions susceptibles de limiter la portée de cette interdiction,avant de conclure par un examen détaillé des conséquences administratives et civiles induites par la présence d'un cas de discrimination effectif.

In recent years, there has been an increased attention towards the composition of feeding fats. In the aftermath of the BSE crisis all animal by-products utilised in animal nutrition have been subjected to close scrutiny. Regulation requires that the material belongs to the category of animal by-products fit for human consumption. This implies the use of reliable techniques in order to insure the safety of products. The feasibility of using rapid and non-destructive methods, to control the composition of feedstuffs on animal fats has been studied. Fourier Transform Raman spectroscopy has been chosen for its advantage to give detailed structural information. Data were treated using chemometric methods as PCA and PLS-DA which have permitted to separate well the different classes of animal fats. The same methodology was applied on fats from various types of feedstock and production technology processes. PLS-DA model for the discrimination of animal fats from the other categories presents a sensitivity and a specificity of 0.958 and 0.914, respectively. These results encourage the use of FT-Raman spectroscopy to discriminate animal fats.

Recognition of environmental sounds is believed to proceed through discrimination steps from broad to more narrow categories. Very little is known about the neural processes that underlie fine-grained discrimination within narrow categories or about their plasticity in relation to newly acquired expertise. We investigated how the cortical representation of birdsongs is modulated by brief training to recognize individual species. During a 60-minute session, participants learned to recognize a set of birdsongs; they improved significantly their performance for trained (T) but not control species (C), which were counterbalanced across participants. Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded during pre- and post-training sessions. Pre vs. post changes in AEPs were significantly different between T and C i) at 206-232ms post stimulus onset within a cluster on the anterior part of the left superior temporal gyrus; ii) at 246-291ms in the left middle frontal gyrus; and iii) 512-545ms in the left middle temporal gyrus as well as bilaterally in the cingulate cortex. All effects were driven by weaker activity for T than C species. Thus, expertise in discriminating T species modulated early stages of semantic processing, during and immediately after the time window that sustains the discrimination between human vs. animal vocalizations. Moreover, the training-induced plasticity is reflected by the sharpening of a left lateralized semantic network, including the anterior part of the temporal convexity and the frontal cortex. Training to identify birdsongs influenced, however, also the processing of C species, but at a much later stage. Correct discrimination of untrained sounds seems to require an additional step which results from lower-level features analysis such as apperception. We therefore suggest that the access to objects within an auditory semantic category is different and depends on subject's level of expertise. More specifically, correct intra-categorical auditory discrimination for untrained items follows the temporal hierarchy and transpires in a late stage of semantic processing. On the other hand, correct categorization of individually trained stimuli occurs earlier, during a period contemporaneous with human vs. animal vocalization discrimination, and involves a parallel semantic pathway requiring expertise.

Malgré une société de plus en plus tolérante, la discrimination reste un problème d'actualité. Pour expliquer la formation des comportements discriminatoires, la recherche en psychologie sociale a traditionnellement étudié la discrimination comme un phénomène intergroupe, notamment à travers la théorie de l'identité sociale (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). Toutefois, cette approche ne permet pas de comprendre comment des individus peuvent de nos jours s'engager dans des comportements discriminatoires tout en sachant que ces actes sont répréhensibles socialement et pénalement. C'est à cette problématique que nous nous sommes attelés dans la présente recherche. De nombreuses études ont mis en évidence le fait que des individus étaient prêts à commettre des actes discriminatoires pour autant qu'ils puissent les justifier (Crandall & Eshleman, 2003). Nous proposons de contribuer à la compréhension de ce phénomène grâce au concept de désengagement moral définit comme le processus par lequel des individus justifient leurs comportements immoraux pour les rendre acceptable. Ce concept a initialement été développé de manière conceptuelle par Bandura (1990) pour comprendre les processus cognitifs amenant des individus à se comporter de manière immorale. Dans le cadre de notre recherche, nous proposons de développer le concept de désengagement moral pour des actes discriminatoires (DMD) ainsi que sa mesure. Plus particulièrement, nous proposons de conceptualiser le DMD comme une différence individuelle permettant aux individus de s'engager dans des comportements discriminatoires en toute impunité à travers un processus anticipatoire de justification. Ces justifications visent à prouver le bien-fondé des actes de discrimination envisagés, ainsi perçus comme bénins, acceptables, voire désirables. Deux des trois étapes envisagées pour le développement de la mesure ont déjà été réalisées. Les résultats obtenus sont prometteurs quant à la structure et la validité de la mesure.

Gender inequalities remain an issue in our society and particularly in the workplace. Several factors can explain this gender difference in top-level managerial positions such as career ambitions but also biases against women. In our chapter, we propose a model explaining why gender inequalities and particularly discrimination against women is still present in our societies despite social norms and existing legislation on gender equality. To this purpose, we review research on discrimination through two different approaches, (a) a prejudice approach through the justification-suppression model developed by Crandall and Eshleman (2003) and (b) a power approach through the social dominance theory (Pratto, Sidanius, Stallworth, & Malle, 1994; Sidanius & Pratto, 1999). In our work, we integrate these two approaches and propose a model of gender prejudice, power and discrimination. The integration of these two approaches contributes to a better understanding of how discrimination against women is formed and maintained over time.

De nos jours, les comportements discriminatoires sont mal vus par la société. On tend à montrer du doigt les personnes s'engageant dans de tels comportements et à médiatiser les entreprises prises en flagrant délit de discrimination, tant au niveau du processus d'embauche (p. ex., rejet systématique des candidatures venant de candidats d'origine étrangère), qu'au niveau des différences de traitement au sein des entreprises (p. ex., différence de salaires entre les femmes et les hommes). Si les comportements discriminatoires sont si mal perçus, pourquoi sont-ils toujours d'actualité ? Comment est-ce que des personnes s'engageant dans de tels comportements peuvent garder à la fois une image positive d'eux-mêmes et éviter de se faire réprimander par d'autres personnes qui pourraient avoir connaissance de leurs mauvais agissements ? C'est à cette problématique que je m'atèle dans ma recherche. A travers une expérience sur le thème de la discrimination à l'embauche, je démontre que les individus ayant tendance à se désengager moralement de leur propre action sont plus à même de s'engager dans des comportements discriminatoires que les autres individus. Le désengagement moral est un processus par lequel les individus justifient leur propre comportement non-éthique afin de les rendre acceptable (Bandura, 1986). En particulier, les résultats ont révélé que cette relation entre désengagement moral et discrimination est modéré par le degré de préjugés des individus. Parmi les individus ayant des préjugés marqués envers les étrangers, plus leur tendance au désengagement moral est élevé, plus ils sont à même de s'engager dans des comportements discriminatoires.

Objective: Frequent Emergency Department (ED) users are vulnerable individuals and discrimination is usually associated with increased vulnerability. The aim of this study was to investigate frequent ED users' perceptions of discrimination and to test whether they were associated with increased vulnerability. Methods: In total, 250 adult frequent ED users were interviewed in Lausanne University Hospital. From a previously published questionnaire, we assessed 15 dichotomous sources of perceived discrimination. Vulnerability was assessed using health status: objective health status (evaluation by a healthcare practitioner including somatic, mental health, behavioral, and social issues - dichotomous variables) and subjective health status [self-evaluation including health-related quality of life (WHOQOL) and quality of life (EUROQOL) - mean-scores]. We computed the prevalence rates of perceived discrimination and tested associations between perceived discrimination and health status (Fischer's exact tests, Mann-Whitney U-tests)

Stochastic learning processes for a specific feature detector are studied. This technique is applied to nonsmooth multilayer neural networks requested to perform a discrimination task of order 3 based on the ssT-block¿ssC-block problem. Our system proves to be capable of achieving perfect generalization, after presenting finite numbers of examples, by undergoing a phase transition. The corresponding annealed theory, which involves the Ising model under external field, shows good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

Using a social identity theory approach, we theorized that recruiters might be particularly biased against skilled immigrant applicants. We refer to this phenomenon as a skill paradox, according to which immigrants are more likely to be targets of employment discrimination the more skilled they are. Furthermore, building on the common ingroup identity model, we proposed that this paradox can be resolved through human resource management (HRM) strategies that promote inclusive hiring practices (e.g., by emphasizing fit with a diverse clientele). The results from a laboratory experiment were consistent with our predictions: Local recruiters preferred skilled local applicants over skilled immigrant applicants, but only when these applicants were qualified for a specific job. This bias against qualified and skilled immigrant applicants was attenuated when fit with a diverse clientele was emphasized, but not when fit with a homogeneous clientele was emphasized or when the hiring strategy was not explained. We discuss the implications of our findings for research on employment discrimination against skilled immigrants, including the role of inclusiveness for reducing discriminatory biases.

Research on color difference evaluation has been active in recent thirty years. Several color difference formulas were developed for industrial applications. The aims of this thesis are to develop the color density which is denoted by comb g and to propose the color density based chromaticity difference formulas. Color density is derived from the discrimination ellipse parameters and color positions in the xy , xyY and CIELAB color spaces, and the color based chromaticity difference formulas are compared with the line element formulas and CIE 2000 color difference formulas. As a result of the thesis, color density represents the perceived color difference accurately, and it could be used to characterize a color by the attribute of perceived color difference from this color.

In this article we present a qualitative study conducted with six indigenous and six mestizos from Intercultural University of Chiapas. The aim of the study is to exemplify the mutual perception between different ethno-linguistic groups, as well as the possible change occurred after the admission to the University. That is, opinions about the other group after and before entering the University. We conclude that a higher education intercultural model can promote mutual understanding and relationship between indigenous and mestizos and thus combat prejudices and stereotypes

Brazil is one of the largest producers and consumers of charcoal in the world. About 50% of its charcoal comes from native forests, with a large part coming from unsustainable operations. The anatomic identification of charcoal is subjective; an instrumental technique would facilitate the monitoring of forests. This study aimed to verify the feasibility of using medium and near infrared reflectance spectroscopy to discriminate native (ipê) from plantation charcoals (eucalyptus). Principal Components Analysis, followed by Discriminant Factorial Analysis formed two different groups indicated by Mahalanobis distances of 40.6 and 80.3 for near and mid infrared, respectively. Validation of the model showed 100% efficacy.

Preattentive perception of occasional deviating stimuli in the stream of standard stimuli can be recorded with cognitive event-related potential (ERP) mismatch negativity (MMN). The earlier detection of stimuli at the auditory cortex can be examined with N1 and P2 ERPs. The MMN recording does not require co-operation, it correlates with perceptual threshold, and even complex sounds can be used as stimuli. The aim of this study was to examine different aspects that should be considered when measuring discrimination of hearing with ERPs. The MMN was found to be stimulusintensity- dependent. As the intensity of sine wave stimuli was increased from 40 to 80 dB HL, MMN mean amplitudes increased. The effect of stimulus frequency on the MMN was studied so that the pitch difference would be equal in each stimulus block according to the psychophysiological mel scale or the difference limen of frequency (DLF). However, the blocks differed from each other. The contralateral white noise masking (50 dB EML) was found to attenuate the MMN amplitude when the right ear was stimulated. The N1 amplitude was attenuated and, in contrast, P2 amplitude was not affected by contralateral white noise masking. The perception and production of vowels by four postlingually deafened patients with a cochlear implant were studied. The MMN response could be elicited in the patient with the best vowel perception abilities. The results of the studies show that concerning the MMN recordings, the stimulus parameters and recording procedure design have a great influence on the results.
