Based on the phase-conjugate polarization interference between two two-photon processes, we obtained an analytic closed form for the second-order or fourth-order Markovian stochastic correlation of the four-level attosecond sum-frequency polarization beat (FASPB) in the extremely Doppler-broadened limit. The homodyne-detected FASPB signal is shown to be particularly sensitive to the statistical properties of the Markovian stochastic light fields with arbitrary bandwidth. The different roles of the amplitude fluctuations and the phase fluctuations can be understood physically in the time-domain picture. The field correlation has a weak influence on the FASPB signal when the laser has narrow bandwidth. In contrast, when the laser has broadband linewidth, the FASPB signal shows resonant-nonresonant cross-correlation, and drastic difference for three Markovian stochastic fields. The maxima of the two two-photon signals are shifted from zero time delay to the opposite direction, and the signal exhibits damping oscillation when the laser frequency is off-resonant from the two-photon transition. A Doppler-free precision in the measurement of the energy-level sum can be achieved with an arbitrary bandwidth. As an attosecond ultrafast modulation process, it can be extended intrinsically to any sum frequency of energy levels.

he first order perturbations of the energy levels of a stationary hydrogen atom in a static external gravitational field, with Schwarzschild metric, are investigated. The energy shifts are calculated for the relativistic 1S, 2S, 2P, 3S, 3P, 3D, 4S, 4P, 4D, and 4F levels. The results show that the energy-level shifts of the states with total angular momentum quantum number 1/2 are all zero, and the ratio of absolute energy shifts with total angular momentum quantum number 5/2 is 145. This feature can be used to help us to distinguish the gravitational effect from other effects.

数值模式是潮波研究的一种有利手段,但在研究中会面临各种具体问题,包括开边界条件的确定、底摩擦系数和耗散系数的选取等。数据同化是解决这些问题的一种途径,即利用有限数量的潮汐观测资料对潮波进行最优估计,其根本目的是迫使模型预报值逼近观测值,使模式不要偏离实际情况太远。本文采用了一种优化开边界方法,沿着数值模型的开边界优化潮汐水位信息,目的是设法使数值解在动力约束的意义下接近观测值,获得研究区域的潮汐结果。边界值由指定优化问题的解来定,以提高模拟区域的潮汐精度,最优问题的解是基于通过开边界的能量通量的变化,处理开边界处的观测值与计算值之差的最小化。这里提供了辐射型边界条件,由Reid 和Bodine(本文简称为RB)推导,我们将采用的优化后的RB方法(称为ORB)是优化开边界的特殊情况。 本文对理想矩形海域( E- E, N- N, 分辨率 )进行了潮波模拟,有东部开边界,模式采用ECOM3D模式。对数据结果的误差分析采用,振幅平均偏差,平均绝对偏差,平均相对误差和均方根偏差四个值来衡量模拟结果的好坏程度。 需要优化入开边界的解析潮汐值本文采用的解析解由方国洪《海湾的潮汐与潮流》(1966年)方法提供,为验证本文所做的解析解和方文的一致,本文做了其第一个例子的关键值a,b,z,结果与其结果吻合的相当好。但略有差别,分析的可能原因是两法在具体迭代方案和计算机保留小数上有区别造成微小误差。另外,我们取m=20,得到更精确的数值,我们发现对前十项的各项参数值,取m=10,m=20各项参数略有改进。当然我们可以获得m更大的各项参数值。 同时为了检验解析解的正确性讨论m和l变化对边界值的影响,结果指出,增大m,m=20时,u的模最大在本身u1或u2的模的6%;m=100时,u的模最大在本身u1或u2的模的4%;m再增大,m=1000时,u的模最大在本身u1或u2的模的4%,改变不大。当l<1时, =0处u的模最大为2。当l=1时, =0处u的模最大为0.1,当l>1时,l越大,u的模越小,当l=10时,u的模最大为0.001,可以认为为0。 为检验该优化方法的应用情况,我们对理想矩形区域进行模拟,首先将本文所采用的优化开边界方法应用于30m的情况,在开边界优化入开边界得出模式解,所得模拟结果与解析解吻合得相当好,该模式解和解析解在整个区域上,振幅平均绝对偏差为9.9cm,相位平均绝对偏差只有4.0 ,均方根偏差只有13.3cm,说明该优化方法在潮波模型中有效。 为验证该优化方法在各种条件下的模拟结果情况,在下面我们做了三类敏感性试验: 第一类试验:为证明在开边界上使用优化方法相比于没有采用优化方法的模拟解更接近于解析解,我们来比较ORB条件与RB条件的优劣,我们模拟用了两个不同的摩擦系数,k分别为:0,0.00006。 结果显示,针对不同摩擦系数,显示在开边界上使用ORB条件的解比使用RB条件的解无论是振幅还是相位都有显著改善,两个试验均方根偏差优化程度分别为84.3%,83.7%。说明在开边界上使用优化方法相比于没有采用优化方法的模拟解更接近于解析解,大大提高了模拟水平。上述的两个试验得出, k=0.00006优化结果比k=0的好。 第二类试验,使用ORB条件确定优化开边界情况下,在东西边界加入出入流的情况,流考虑线性和非线性情况,结果显示,加入流的情况,潮汐模拟的效果降低不少,流为1Sv的情况要比5Sv的情况均方根偏差相差20cm,而不加流的情况只有0.2cm。线性流和非线性流情况两者模式解相差不大,振幅,相位各项指数都相近, 说明流的线性与否对结果影响不大。 第三类试验,不仅在开边界使用ORB条件,在模式内部也使用ORB条件,比较了内部优化和不优化情况与解析解的偏差。结果显示,选用不同的k,振幅都能得到很好的模拟,而相位相对较差。另外,在内部优化的情况下,考虑不同的k的模式解, 我们选用了与解析解相近的6个模式解的k,结果显示,不同的k,振幅都能得到很好的模拟,而相位较差。 总之,在开边界使用ORB条件比使用RB条件好,振幅相位都有大幅度改进,在加入出入流情况下,流的大小对模拟结果有影响,但线形流和非线性流差别不大。内部优化的结果显示,模式采用不同的k都能很好模拟解析解的振幅。

We address mid-level vision for the recognition of non-rigid objects. We align model and image using frame curves - which are object or "figure/ground" skeletons. Frame curves are computed, without discontinuities, using Curved Inertia Frames, a provably global scheme implemented on the Connection Machine, based on: non-cartisean networks; a definition of curved axis of inertia; and a ridge detector. I present evidence against frame alignment in human perception. This suggests: frame curves have a role in figure/ground segregation and in fuzzy boundaries; their outside/near/top/ incoming regions are more salient; and that perception begins by setting a reference frame (prior to early vision), and proceeds by processing convex structures.

AIM: To evaluate the suitability of reference genes in gastric tissue samples and cell lines.METHODS: the suitability of genes ACTB, B2M, GAPDH, RPL29, and 18S rRNA was assessed in 21 matched pairs of neoplastic and adjacent nonneoplastic gastric tissues from patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, 27 normal gastric tissues from patients without cancer, and 4 cell lines using reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). the ranking of the best single and combination of reference genes was determined by NormFinder, geNorm (TM), BestKeeper, and DataAssist (TM). in addition, GenEx software was used to determine the optimal number of reference genes. To validate the results, the mRNA expression of a target gene, DNMT1, was quantified using the different reference gene combinations suggested by the various software packages for normalization.RESULTS: ACTB was the best reference gene for all gastric tissues, cell lines and all gastric tissues plus cell lines. GAPDH + B2M or ACTB + B2M was the best combination of reference genes for all the gastric tissues. On the other hand, ACTB + B2M was the best combination for all the cell lines tested and was also the best combination for analyses involving all the gastric tissues plus cell lines. According to the GenEx software, 2 or 3 genes were the optimal number of references genes for all the gastric tissues. the relative quantification of DNMT1 showed similar patterns when normalized by each combination of reference genes. the level of expression of DNMT1 in neoplastic, adjacent non-neoplastic and normal gastric tissues did not differ when these samples were normalized using GAPDH + B2M (P = 0.32), ACTB + B2M (P = 0.61), or GAPDH + B2M + ACTB (P = 0.44).CONCLUSION: GAPDH + B2M or ACTB + B2M is the best combination of reference gene for all the gastric tissues, and ACTB + B2M is the best combination for the cell lines tested. With the proliferation of mobile wireless communication and embedded systems, the energy efficiency becomes a major design constraint. The dissipated energy is often referred as the product of power dissipation and the input-output delay. Most of electronic design automation techniques focus on optimising only one of these parameters either power or delay. Industry standard design flows integrate systematic methods of optimising either area or timing while for power consumption optimisation one often employs heuristics which are characteristic to a specific design. In this work we answer three questions in our quest to provide a systematic approach to joint power and delay Optimisation. The first question of our research is: How to build a design flow which incorporates academic and industry standard design flows for power optimisation? To address this question, we use a reference design flow provided by Synopsys and integrate in this flow academic tools and methodologies. The proposed design flow is used as a platform for analysing some novel algorithms and methodologies for optimisation in the context of digital circuits. The second question we answer is: Is possible to apply a systematic approach for power optimisation in the context of combinational digital circuits? The starting point is a selection of a suitable data structure which can easily incorporate information about delay, power, area and which then allows optimisation algorithms to be applied. In particular we address the implications of a systematic power optimisation methodologies and the potential degradation of other (often conflicting) parameters such as area or the delay of implementation. Finally, the third question which this thesis attempts to answer is: Is there a systematic approach for multi-objective optimisation of delay and power? A delay-driven power and power-driven delay optimisation is proposed in order to have balanced delay and power values. This implies that each power optimisation step is not only constrained by the decrease in power but also the increase in delay. Similarly, each delay optimisation step is not only governed with the decrease in delay but also the increase in power. The goal is to obtain multi-objective optimisation of digital circuits where the two conflicting objectives are power and delay. The logic synthesis and optimisation methodology is based on AND-Inverter Graphs (AIGs) which represent the functionality of the circuit. The switching activities and arrival times of circuit nodes are annotated onto an AND-Inverter Graph under the zero and a non-zero-delay model. We introduce then several reordering rules which are applied on the AIG nodes to minimise switching power or longest path delay of the circuit at the pre-technology mapping level. The academic Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool ABC is used for the manipulation of AND-Inverter Graphs. We have implemented various combinatorial optimisation algorithms often used in Electronic Design Automation such as Simulated Annealing and Uniform Cost Search Algorithm. Simulated Annealing (SMA) is a probabilistic meta heuristic for the global optimization problem of locating a good approximation to the global optimum of a given function in a large search space. We used SMA to probabilistically decide between moving from one optimised solution to another such that the dynamic power is optimised under given delay constraints and the delay is optimised under given power constraints. A good approximation to the global optimum solution of energy constraint is obtained. Uniform Cost Search (UCS) is a tree search algorithm used for traversing or searching a weighted tree, tree structure, or graph. We have used Uniform Cost Search Algorithm to search within the AIG network, a specific AIG node order for the reordering rules application. After the reordering rules application, the AIG network is mapped to an AIG netlist using specific library cells. Our approach combines network re-structuring, AIG nodes reordering, dynamic power and longest path delay estimation and optimisation and finally technology mapping to an AIG netlist. A set of MCNC Benchmark circuits and large combinational circuits up to 100,000 gates have been used to validate our methodology. Comparisons for power and delay optimisation are made with the best synthesis scripts used in ABC. Reduction of 23% in power and 15% in delay with minimal overhead is achieved, compared to the best known ABC results. Also, our approach is also implemented on a number of processors with combinational and sequential components and significant savings are achieved.

In this paper, a hierarchical video structure summarization approach using Laplacian Eigenmap is proposed, where a small set of reference frames is selected from the video sequence to form a reference subspace to measure the dissimilarity between two arbitrary frames. In the proposed summarization scheme, the shot-level key frames are first detected from the continuity of inter-frame dissimilarity, and the sub-shot level and scene level representative frames are then summarized by using K-mean clustering. The experiment is carried on both test videos and movies, and the results show that in comparison with a similar approach using latent semantic analysis, the proposed approach using Laplacian Eigenmap can achieve a better recall rate in keyframe detection, and gives an efficient hierarchical summarization at sub shot, shot and scene levels subsequently.

The fabrication and performance of the first bit-level systolic correlator array is described. The application of systolic array concepts at the bit level provides a simple and extremely powerful method for implementing high-performance digital processing functions. The resulting structure is highly regular, facilitating yield enhancement through fault-tolerant redundancy techniques and therefore ideally suited to implementation as a VLSI chip. The CMOS/SOS chip operates at 35 MHz, is fully cascadable and exhibits 64-stage correlation for 1-bit reference and 4-bit data. 7 refs.

Large parts of the periodic table cannot be cooled by current laser-based methods. We investigate whether zero energy fragmentation of laser cooled fluorides is a potential source of ultracold fluorine atoms. We report new ab initio calculations on the lowest electronic states of the BeF diatomic molecule including spin-orbit coupling, the calculated minima for the valence electronic states being within 1 pm of the spectroscopic values. A four colour cooling scheme based on the A2? ? X2S+ transition is shown to be feasible for this molecule. Multi-Reference Configuration Interaction (MRCI) potentials of the lowest energy Rydberg states are reported for the first time and found to be in good agreement with experimental data. A series of multi-pulse excitation schemes from a single rovibrational level of the cooled molecule are proposed to produce cold fluorine atoms.

This paper introduces hybrid address spaces as a fundamental design methodology for implementing scalable runtime systems on many-core architectures without hardware support for cache coherence. We use hybrid address spaces for an implementation of MapReduce, a programming model for large-scale data processing, and the implementation of a remote memory access (RMA) model. Both implementations are available on the Intel SCC and are portable to similar architectures. We present the design and implementation of HyMR, a MapReduce runtime system whereby different stages and the synchronization operations between them alternate between a distributed memory address space and a shared memory address space, to improve performance and scalability. We compare HyMR to a reference implementation and we find that HyMR improves performance by a factor of 1.71× over a set of representative MapReduce benchmarks. We also compare HyMR with Phoenix++, a state-of-art implementation for systems with hardware-managed cache coherence in terms of scalability and sustained to peak data processing bandwidth, where HyMR demon- strates improvements of a factor of 3.1× and 3.2× respectively. We further evaluate our hybrid remote memory access (HyRMA) programming model and assess its performance to be superior of that of message passing.

In this paper, a multi-level wordline driver scheme is presented to improve SRAM read and write stability while lowering power consumption during hold operation. The proposed circuit applies a shaped wordline voltage pulse during read mode and a boosted wordline pulse during write mode. During read, the applied shaped pulse is tuned at nominal voltage for short period of time, whereas for the remaining access time, the wordline voltage is reduced to a lower level. This pulse results in improved read noise margin without any degradation in access time which is explained by examining the dynamic and nonlinear behavior of the SRAM cell. Furthermore, during hold mode, the wordline voltage starts from a negative value and reaches zero voltage, resulting in a lower leakage current compared to conventional SRAM. Our simulations using TSMC 65nm process show that the proposed wordline driver results in 2X improvement in static read noise margin while the write margin is improved by 3X. In addition, the total leakage of the proposed SRAM is reduced by 10% while the total power is improved by 12% in the worst case scenario of a single SRAM cell. The total area penalty is 10% for a 128Kb standard SRAM array.

In this paper, a multi-level wordline driver scheme is presented to improve 6T-SRAM read and write stability. The proposed wordline driver generates a shaped pulse during the read mode and a boosted wordline during the write mode. During read, the shaped pulse is tuned at nominal voltage for a short period of time, whereas for the remaining access time, the wordline voltage is reduced to save the power consumption of the cell. This shaped wordline pulse results in improved read noise margin without any degradation in access time for small wordline load. The improvement is explained by examining the dynamic and nonlinear behavior of the SRAM cell. Furthermore, during the hold mode, for a short time (depending on the size of boosting capacitance), wordline voltage becomes negative and charges up to zero after a specific time that results in a lower leakage current compared to conventional SRAM. The proposed technique results in at least 2× improvement in read noise margin while it improves write margin by 3× for lower supply voltages than 0.7 V. The leakage power for the proposed SRAM is reduced by 2% while the total power is improved by 3% in the worst case scenario for an SRAM array. The main advantage of the proposed wordline driver is the improvement of dynamic noise margin with less than 2.5% penalty in area. TSMC 65 nm technology models are used for simulations.

The mesoscale (100–102 m) of river habitats has been identified as the scale that simultaneously offers insights into ecological structure and falls within the practical bounds of river management. Mesoscale habitat (mesohabitat) classifications for relatively large rivers, however, are underdeveloped compared with those produced for smaller streams. Approaches to habitat modelling have traditionally focused on individual species or proceeded on a species-by-species basis. This is particularly problematic in larger rivers where the effects of biological interactions are more complex and intense. Community-level approaches can rapidly model many species simultaneously, thereby integrating the effects of biological interactions while providing information on the relative importance of environmental variables in structuring the community. One such community-level approach, multivariate regression trees, was applied in order to determine the relative influences of abiotic factors on fish assemblages within shoreline mesohabitats of San Pedro River, Chile, and to define reference communities prior to the planned construction of a hydroelectric power plant. Flow depth, bank materials and the availability of riparian and instream cover, including woody debris, were the main variables driving differences between the assemblages. Species strongly indicative of distinctive mesohabitat types included the endemic Galaxias platei. Among other outcomes, the results provide information on the impact of non-native salmonids on river-dwelling Galaxias platei, suggesting a degree of habitat segregation between these taxa based on flow depth. The results support the use of the mesohabitat concept in large, relatively pristine river systems, and they represent a basis for assessing the impact of any future hydroelectric power plant construction and operation. By combing community classifications with simple sets of environmental rules, the multivariate regression trees produced can be used to predict the community structure of any mesohabitat along the reach.

Com o aumento da população mundial registado nos últimos anos surgiu também uma maior procura energética. Esse aumento foi inicialmente colmatado recorrendo essencialmente a fontes de origem fóssil, pelo facto destas serem mais baratas. No entanto, essa tendência de preços baixos sofreu o primeiro abalo nos anos 70 do século passado, altura em que o preço do petróleo disparou, devido a questões políticas. Nessa altura ficou visível para os países ocidentais o quanto estes eram dependentes dos países produtores de petróleo que, em geral, são instáveis politicamente. Começou então a procura de fontes energéticas alternativas. Além da questão económica do aumento do preço dos combustíveis, existe também o problema ambiental. Os maiores responsáveis pela emissão de gases efeito estufa (GEE) são os combustíveis fósseis. Os GEE contribuem para o aquecimento global, o que origina fenómenos ambientais severos que poderão levar a mudanças climáticas significativas. As energias renováveis apresentam-se como a solução mais viável ao problema energético e ambiental que se verifica actualmente, porque permitem colmatar o aumento da procura energética de uma forma limpa e sustentável. Na sequência destes problemas surgiram nos últimos anos veículos que permitem reduzir ou mesmo eliminar o consumo de combustíveis fósseis, como os veículos híbridos eléctricos, eléctricos e a hidrogénio. Nesta dissertação analisa-se um sistema que foi pensado para ser implementado em áreas de serviço, que permite efectuar o carregamento de electric vehicles (EV) utilizando energia eléctrica de origem fotovoltaica e a produção de hidrogénio para os fuels cell electric vehicles (FCEV). É efectuada uma análise económica do sistema, uma análise ambiental e analisou-se também o impacto na redução da dependência do país em relação ao exterior, sendo ainda efectuada uma pequena análise ao sistema MOBIE. No caso dos veículos a hidrogénio, foi determinada qual seria a melhor opção em termos económicos, para a produção de hidrogénio considerando três regimes de produção: recorrendo apenas à energia eléctrica proveniente do sistema fotovoltaico, apenas à energia eléctrica da rede, ou uma combinação dos dois regimes. O sistema estudado nesta dissertação apresenta um enorme potencial a nível energético e ambiental, surgindo como alternativa para abastecer os veículos que irão permitir, no futuro, eliminar a dependência energética em relação às fontes fósseis e ao mesmo tempo diminuir a quantidade de gases efeito estufa emitidos para a atmosfera.
