La història de la traducció al català en el segle XIX no presenta la figura del traductor professional, sinó només la de l’escriptor doblat de traductor. Però d’escriptores vuitcentistes que escrivissin en català, n’hi va haver poques i, de fet, no en tenim encara una nòmina completa ni podem valorar, amb unes escasses excepcions, les seves aportacions literàries ni quantitativament ni qualitativament. La poca o nul·la recerca realitzada en aquest àmbit fa que tampoc no tinguem prou informació per precisar quina fou la contribució traductogràfica real de les literates catalanes en aquella centúria. El treball intenta ser una aproximació al tema, alhora que un estat de la qüestió.

Objectives: The objectives of this study is to review the set of criteria of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) for priority-setting in research with addition of new criteria if necessary, and to develop and evaluate the reliability and validity of the final priority score. Methods: Based on the evaluation of 199 research topics, forty-five experts identified additional criteria for priority-setting, rated their relevance, and ranked and weighted them in a three-round modified Delphi technique. A final priority score was developed and evaluated. Internal consistency, test–retest and inter-rater reliability were assessed. Correlation with experts’ overall qualitative topic ratings were assessed as an approximation to validity. Results: All seven original IOM criteria were considered relevant and two new criteria were added (“potential for translation into practice”, and “need for knowledge”). Final ranks and relative weights differed from those of the original IOM criteria: “research impact on health outcomes” was considered the most important criterion (4.23), as opposed to “burden of disease” (3.92). Cronbach’s alpha (0.75) and test–retest stability (interclass correlation coefficient = 0.66) for the final set of criteria were acceptable. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for overall assessment of priority was 0.66. Conclusions: A reliable instrument for prioritizing topics in clinical and health services research has been developed. Further evaluation of its validity and impact on selecting research topics is required

The present study builds on a previous proposal for assigning probabilities to the outcomes computed using different primary indicators in single-case studies. These probabilities are obtained comparing the outcome to previously tabulated reference values and reflect the likelihood of the results in case there was no intervention effect. The current study explores how well different metrics are translated into p values in the context of simulation data. Furthermore, two published multiple baseline data sets are used to illustrate how well the probabilities could reflect the intervention effectiveness as assessed by the original authors. Finally, the importance of which primary indicator is used in each data set to be integrated is explored; two ways of combining probabilities are used: a weighted average and a binomial test. The results indicate that the translation into p values works well for the two nonoverlap procedures, with the results for the regression-based procedure diverging due to some undesirable features of its performance. These p values, both when taken individually and when combined, were well-aligned with the effectiveness for the real-life data. The results suggest that assigning probabilities can be useful for translating the primary measure into the same metric, using these probabilities as additional evidence on the importance of behavioral change, complementing visual analysis and professional's judgments.

Background: The relevance of persistent cognitive deficits to the pathogenesis and prognosis of bipolar disorders (BD) is understudied, and its translation into clinical practice has been limited by the absence of brief methods assessing cognitive status in Psychiatry. This investigation assessed the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP-S) for the detection of cognitive impairment in BD. Methods: After short training, psychiatrists at 40 outpatient clinics administered the SCIP three times over two weeks to a total of 76 consecutive type I BD admissions. Experienced psychologists also administered a comprehensive battery of standard neuropsychological instruments to clinical sample and 45 healthy control subjects. Results: Feasibility was supported by a brief administration time (approximately 15 minutes) and minimal scoring errors. The reliability of the SCIP was confirmed by good equivalence of forms, acceptable stability (ICC range 0.59 to 0.87) and adequate internal consistency (Chronbach's alpha of 0.74). Construct validity was granted by extraction of a single factor (accounting 52% of the variance), acceptable correlations with conventional neuropsychological instruments, and a clear differentiation between bipolar I and normal samples. Efficiency was also provided by the adequate sensitivity and specificity. Limitations: The sample size is not very large. The SCIP and the neurocognitive battery do not cover all potentially relevant cognitive domains. Also, sensitivity to change remains unexplored. Conclusion: With minimal training, physicians obtained a reliable and valid estimate of cognitive impairment in approximately 15 minutes from an application of the SCIP to type I BD patients.

ABSTRACT Microsprinkler non-pressure compensating nozzles usually show water flow variation along the lateral line. This study aimed at adapting microtubes into non-compensating system of microsprinklers previous installed in the field, as a self-compensated nozzle, to improve the flow uniformity along the lateral line. Microtubes were adapted to three types of commercial microsprinklers. Tests were conducted, both in the laboratory and in field, to evaluate the microsprinkler performance at four different flows (40, 50, 60 and 70 L h-1) under pressure head range from 75 to 245 kPa. Nozzles presented coefficient of flow-rate variation (CVq) lower than 5.5% and distribution uniformity (DU) greater than 95%, which are classified as excellent. The original spatial water distribution of the microsprinkler did not change by using microtube as a nozzle. This device adapted to non-pressure compensating microsprinklers are functional and operate effectively with flows ranging up to 70 L h-1. Small variations at microsprinkler flows along the lateral line can occur, however, at random manner, which is common for pressure-compensating nozzles. Therefore, the microtube technique is able to control pressure variation in microsprinklers.

CHARGE syndrome, Sotos syndrome and 3p deletion syndrome are examples of rare inherited syndromes that have been recognized for decades but for which the molecular diagnostics only have been made possible by recent advances in genomic research. Despite these advances, development of diagnostic tests for rare syndromes has been hindered by diagnostic laboratories having limited funds for test development, and their prioritization of tests for which a (relatively) high demand can be expected. In this study, the molecular diagnostic tests for CHARGE syndrome and Sotos syndrome were developed, resulting in their successful translation into routine diagnostic testing in the laboratory of Medical Genetics (UTUlab). In the CHARGE syndrome group, mutation was identified in 40.5% of the patients and in the Sotos syndrome group, in 34%, reflecting the use of the tests in routine diagnostics in differential diagnostics. In CHARGE syndrome, the low prevalence of structural aberrations was also confirmed. In 3p deletion syndrome, it was shown that small terminal deletions are not causative for the syndrome, and that testing with arraybased analysis provides a reliable estimate of the deletion size but benign copy number variants complicate result interpretation. During the development of the tests, it was discovered that finding an optimal molecular diagnostic strategy for a given syndrome is always a compromise between the sensitivity, specificity and feasibility of applying a new method. In addition, the clinical utility of the test should be considered prior to test development: sometimes a test performing well in a laboratory has limited utility for the patient, whereas a test performing poorly in the laboratory may have a great impact on the patient and their family. At present, the development of next generation sequencing methods is changing the concept of molecular diagnostics of rare diseases from single tests towards whole-genome analysis.

Schwann cell disturbance followed by segmental demyelination in the peripheral nervous system occurs in diabetic patients. Since Schwann cell and oligodendrocyte remyelination in the central nervous system is a well-known event in the ethidium bromide (EB) demyelinating model, the aim of this investigation was to determine the behavior of both cell types after local EB injection into the brainstem of streptozotocin diabetic rats. Adult male Wistar rats received a single intravenous injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) and were submitted 10 days later to a single injection of 10 µL 0.1% (w/v) EB or 0.9% saline solution into the cisterna pontis. Ten microliters of 0.1% EB was also injected into non-diabetic rats. The animals were anesthetized and perfused through the heart 7 to 31 days after EB or saline injection and brainstem sections were collected and processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. The final balance of myelin repair in diabetic and non-diabetic rats at 31 days was compared using a semi-quantitative method. Diabetic rats presented delayed macrophage activity and lesser remyelination compared to non-diabetic rats. Although oligodendrocytes were the major remyelinating cells in the brainstem, Schwann cells invaded EB-induced lesions, first appearing at 11 days in non-diabetic rats and by 15 days in diabetic rats. Results indicate that short-term streptozotocin-induced diabetes hindered both oligodendrocyte and Schwann cell remyelination (mean remyelination scores of 2.57 ± 0.77 for oligodendrocytes and 0.67 ± 0.5 for Schwann cells) compared to non-diabetic rats (3.27 ± 0.85 and 1.38 ± 0.81, respectively).

Renewable energy investments play a key role in energy transition. While studies have suggested that social acceptance may form a barrier for renewable energy investments, the ways in which companies perceive and attempt to gain the acceptance have received little attention. This study aims to fill the gap by exploring how large electric utilities justify their strategic investments in their press releases and how do the justifications differ between renewable and non-renewable energy investments. The study bases on legitimacy theory and aims at contributing to the research on legitimation in institutional change. As its research method, the study employs an inductive mixed method content analysis. The study has two parts: a qualitative content analysis that explores and identifies the themes and legitimation strategies of the press releases and a quantitative computer-aided analysis that compares renewable and non-renewable energy investments. The sample of the study consists of 396 press releases representing the strategic energy investments of 34 electric utilities from the list of the world’s 250 largest and financially most successful energy companies. The data is collected from the period of 2010–2014. The study reveals that most important justifications for strategic energy investments are fit with the strategy and environmental and social benefits. Justifications address especially the expectations of market. Investments into non-renewable energy are justified more and they use more arguments addressing the proprieties and performance of power plants whereas renewable energy investments are legitimized by references to past actions and commonly accepted morals and norms. The findings support the notion that validity-addressing and propriety-addressing legitimation strategies are used differently in stable and unstable institutional settings.

Dopaminergic neurotransmission is involved in the regulation of sleep. In particular, the nigrostriatal pathway is an important center of sleep regulation. We hypothesized that dopaminergic neurons located in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) could be activated by gentle handling, a method to obtain sleep deprivation (SD). Adult male C57/BL6J mice (N = 5/group) were distributed into non-SD (NSD) or SD groups. SD animals were subjected to SD once for 1 or 3 h by gentle handling. Two experiments were performed. The first determined the activation of SNpc neurons after SD, and the second examined the same parameters after pharmacologically induced dopaminergic depletion using intraperitoneal reserpine (2 mg/kg). After 1 or 3 h, SD and NSD mice were subjected to motor evaluation using the open field test. Immediately after the behavioral test, the mice were perfused intracardially to fix the brain and for immunohistochemical analysis of c-Fos protein expression within the SNpc. The open field test indicated that SD for 1 or 3 h did not modify motor behavior. However, c-Fos protein expression was increased after 1 h of SD compared with the NSD and 3-h SD groups. These immunohistochemistry data indicate that these periods of SD are not able to produce dopaminergic supersensitivity. Nevertheless, the increased expression of c-Fos within the SNpc suggests that dopaminergic nigral activation was triggered by SD earlier than motor responsiveness. Dopamine-depleted mice (experiment 2) exhibited a similar increase of c-Fos expression compared to control animals indicating that dopamine neurons are still activated in the 1-h SD group despite the exhaustion of dopamine. This finding suggests that this range (2-5-fold) of neuronal activation may serve as a marker of SD.

This study explores the perceptions and experiences of middle-class women, mostly mothers, regarding the elementary school education of their children of mixed heritage. Because it endeavours to provide a forum in which the voices of women are considered a source of valuable information for educators, this study contributes to the fields of feminist and mothering research. Participants assign meanings to their lived experiences (Schon, 1983; van Manen 1997) and contemplate the various ways in which a mixed heritage mayor may not affect a child's schooling. Four main participants were interviewed who are mothers whose children of mixed heritage presently attend public elementary schools in Ontario, Canada. The study had an emergent design, thus allowing the researcher to make decisions as the study progressed. Three additional participants were included in the study to provide a wider perspective on the topic. These 3 additional women were the researcher herself as she explored her self-conceptual baggage (Kirby & McKenna. 1989); the researcher's mother in an attempt to consider the motherline (Lowinsky, 1992); and a volunteer non-mother of mixed ethnicity. The study involved a total of 12 individual interviews of approximately 2 hours in length. The 4 main participants and the researcher were each interviewed twice; the researcher's mother and the volunteer non-mother were each interviewed once. The researcher also attempted a focus group and kept a journal throughout the research process. Much of the analysis centers on women's interpretations of the mixed heritage experience and on their suggestions for elementary school educators. It concludes pondering on the invisibility (Chiong, 1998) of such children within the school system and calling for increased teacher education as a way to bring the mixed heritage experience out of the shadows.

Les trichothécènes de Fusarium appartiennent au groupe des sesquiterpènes qui sont des inhibiteurs la synthèse des protéines des eucaryotes. Les trichothécènes causent d’une part de sérieux problèmes de santé aux humains et aux animaux qui ont consommé des aliments infectés par le champignon et de l’autre part, elles sont des facteurs importants de la virulence chez plantes. Dans cette étude, nous avons isolé et caractérisé seize isolats de Fusarium de la pomme de terre infectée naturellement dans un champs. Les tests de pathogénicité ont été réalisés pour évaluer la virulence des isolats sur la pomme de terre ainsi que leur capacité à produire des trichothécènes. Nous avons choisi F. sambucinum souche T5 comme un modèle pour cette étude parce qu’il était le plus agressif sur la pomme de terre en serre en induisant un flétrissement rapide, un jaunissement suivi de la mort des plantes. Cette souche produit le 4,15-diacétoxyscirpénol (4,15-DAS) lorsqu’elle est cultivée en milieu liquide. Nous avons amplifié et caractérisé cinq gènes de biosynthèse trichothécènes (TRI5, TRI4, TRI3, TRI11, et TRI101) impliqués dans la production du 4,15-DAS. La comparaison des séquences avec les bases de données a montré 98% et 97% d'identité de séquence avec les gènes de la biosynthèse des trichothécènes chez F. sporotrichioides et Gibberella zeae, respectivement. Nous avons confrenté F. sambucinum avec le champignon mycorhizien à arbuscule Glomus irregulare en culture in vitro. Les racines de carotte et F. sambucinum seul, ont été utilisés comme témoins. Nous avons observé que la croissance de F. sambucinum a été significativement réduite avec la présence de G. irregulare par rapport aux témoins. Nous avons remarqué que l'inhibition de la croissance F. sambucinum a été associée avec des changements morphologiques, qui ont été observés lorsque les hyphes de G. irregulare ont atteint le mycélium de F. sambucinum. Ceci suggère que G. irregulare pourrait produire des composés qui inhibent la croissance de F. sambucinum. Nous avons étudié les patrons d’expression des gènes de biosynthèse de trichothécènes de F. sambucinum en présence ou non de G. irregulare, en utilisant le PCR en temps-réel. Nous avons observé que TRI5 et TRI6 étaient sur-exprimés, tandis que TRI4, TRI13 et TRI101 étaient en sous-exprimés en présence de G. irregulare. Des analyses par chromatographie en phase-gazeuse (GC-MS) montrent clairement que la présence de G. irregulare réduit significativement la production des trichothécènes par F. sambucinum. Le dosage du 4,15-DAS a été réduit à 39 μg/ml milieu GYEP par G. irregulare, comparativement à 144 μg/ml milieu GYEP quand F. sambucinum est cultivé sans G. irregulare. Nous avons testé la capacité de G. irregulare à induire la défense des plants de pomme de terre contre l'infection de F. sambucinum. Des essais en chambre de croissance montrent que G. irregulare réduit significativement l’incidence de la maladie causée par F. sambucinum. Nous avons aussi observé que G. irregulare augmente la biomasse des racines, des feuilles et des tubercules. En utilisant le PCR en temps-réel, nous avons étudié les niveaux d’expression des gènes impliqué dans la défense des plants de pommes de terre tels que : chitinase class II (ChtA3), 1,3-β-glucanase (Glub), peroxidase (CEVI16), osmotin-like protéin (OSM-8e) et pathogenèses-related protein (PR-1). Nous avons observé que G. irregulare a induit une sur-expression de tous ces gènes dans les racines après 72 heures de l'infection avec F. sambucinum. Nous avons également trové que la baisse provoquée par F. sambucinum des gènes Glub et CEVI16 dans les feuilles pourrait etre bloquée par le traitement AMF. Ceci montre que l’inoculation avec G. irregulare constitut un bio-inducteur systémique même dans les parties non infectées par F. sambucinum. En conclusion, cette étude apporte de nouvelles connaissances importantes sur les interactions entre les plants et les microbes, d’une part sur les effets directs des champignons mycorhiziens sur l’inhibition de la croissance et la diminution de la production des mycotoxines chez Fusarium et d’autre part, l’atténuation de la sévérité de la maladie dans des plantes par stimulation leur défense. Les données présentées ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives de bio-contrôle contre les pathogènes mycotoxinogènes des plantes.

L’angiogenèse, caractérisée par la formation de nouveaux vaisseaux sanguins à partir de vaisseaux préexistants, est un processus accompagné par l’inflammation, impliquant la synthèse et la relâche de différents facteurs de croissance par les cellules inflammatoires. Parmi ces facteurs, seuls le vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) et les angiopoïétines (Ang1 et Ang2) peuvent participer à la régulation de l’inflammation et de l’angiogenèse. La famille des angiopoïétines comporte quatre membres, desquels l’Ang1 et l’Ang2 ont été les plus étudiés. Ces deux médiateurs inflammatoires sont capables d’activer le récepteur Tie2, dont l’expression a initialement été rapportée sur les cellules endothéliales (CE). Notre laboratoire a été le premier à démontrer l’expression de Tie2 à la surface des neutrophiles, ainsi que sa capacité, suite à son activation par l’Ang1 ou l’Ang2, à induire la synthèse du facteur d’activation plaquettaire (PAF), l’activation de la β2-intégrine, la migration des neutrophiles ainsi que leur adhésion aux CE. D’autres études ont montré que les CE emmagasinent et relâchent le VEGF et l’Ang2, tandis que les péricytes et les cellules musculaires lisses contiennent l’Ang1. Puisque les neutrophiles relâchent le VEGF et que les deux angiopoïétines ont la capacité d’activer Tie2 sur ces derniers, nous avons voulu déterminer si les neutrophiles contiennent l’Ang1 et/ou l’Ang2 et si elles peuvent être relâchées suite à une stimulation avec des agonistes proinflammatoires. Nous avons découvert que l’Ang1, mais pas l’Ang2 est présente dans les neutrophiles, et qu’elle est relâchée suite à une stimulation au phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). De plus, nous avons démontré que l’Ang1 est localisée au niveau du cytosol et que sa relâche est calcium-indépendante, contrairement au VEGF, qui est localisé dans les granules β et sa relâche est calcium-dépendante. Cette étude démontre pour la première fois l’expression et la localisation de l’Ang1 dans les neutrophiles. Une récente étude effectuée dans notre laboratoire a démontré que les angiopoïétines induisent la migration des neutrophiles en activant le récepteur Tie2 et la voie de la PI3K. De plus, les angiopoïétines ont potentialisé la migration induite par l’IL-8. Ainsi, nous avons émis l’hypothèse que l’Ang1 et/ou l’Ang2 seraient capables d’induire la relâche et/ou la synthèse de l’IL-8 par les neutrophiles. Nous avons démontré pour la première fois, la capacité de l’Ang1 à induire l’expression de l’ARNm, ainsi que la synthèse et la relâche d’IL-8 par les neutrophiles. Cependant, un traitement avec l’Ang2 seule ou en combinaison avec l’Ang1 n’a eu aucun effet sur les activités mentionnées ci-dessus. Nous avons aussi observé que la synthèse et la relâche d’IL-8 induite par l’Ang1 requièrent la transcription de l’ADN en ARNm, suivie par la stabilisation de ce dernier, qui ultimement induit la traduction de l’ARNm de l’IL-8 en sa protéine. Finalement, nous avons démontré que la stimulation des neutrophiles avec l’Ang1 induit ces activités en activant la voie de la p42/44 MAPK, tout en étant indépendantes de la p38 MAPK et la PI3K/Akt. Ces résultats sont en lien direct avec une récente étude dans laquelle nous avons observé que l’Ang1, mais pas l’Ang2 est capable d’augmenter la survie des neutrophiles via la relâche d’IL-8.

La protection des renseignements personnels est au cœur des préoccupations de tous les acteurs du Web, commerçants ou internautes. Si pour les uns trop de règles en la matière pourraient freiner le développement du commerce électronique, pour les autres un encadrement des pratiques est essentiel à la protection de leur vie privée. Même si les motivations de chacun sont divergentes, le règlement de cette question apparaît comme une étape essentielle dans le développement du réseau. Le Platform for Privacy Preference (P3P) propose de contribuer à ce règlement par un protocole technique permettant la négociation automatique, entre l’ordinateur de l’internaute et celui du site qu’il visite, d’une entente qui encadrera les échanges de renseignements. Son application pose de nombreuses questions, dont celle de sa capacité à apporter une solution acceptable à tous et surtout, celle du respect des lois existantes. La longue et difficile élaboration du protocole, ses dilutions successives et sa mise en vigueur partielle témoignent de la difficulté de la tâche à accomplir et des résistances qu’il rencontre. La première phase du projet se limite ainsi à l’encodage des politiques de vie privée des sites et à leur traduction en termes accessibles par les systèmes des usagers. Dans une deuxième phase, P3P devrait prendre en charge la négociation et la conclusion d’ententes devant lier juridiquement les parties. Cette tâche s’avère plus ardue, tant sous l’angle juridique que sous celui de son adaptation aux us et coutumes du Web. La consolidation des fonctions mises en place dans la première version apparaît fournir une solution moins risquée et plus profitable en écartant la possible conclusion d’ententes incertaines fondées sur une technique encore imparfaite. Mieux éclairer le consentement des internautes à la transmission de leurs données personnelles par la normalisation des politiques de vie privée pourrait être en effet une solution plus simple et efficace à court terme.
