The Tiebout Hypothesis asserts that, when it is efficient to have multiple jurisdictions providing local public goods, then competition between jurisdictions for residents will lead to a near-optimal outcome. Research from cooperative game theory both provides a foundation for the hypothesis and extends the hypothesis to diverse situations where small groups of participants are effective.

Myxococcus xanthus is a Gram-negative bacterium that aggregates to form fruiting bodies when nutrients are limiting. Previous studies showed that the frz mutants that are defective in chemotaxis exhibited irregular and infrequent patterns of cellular reversal. In contrast, wild-type cells, when examined individually, reverse relatively frequently, about once every 6 min. It is not known how the change of reversal frequency effects cellular aggregation during fruiting body formation in M. xanthus. In this study, we stained cells with a tetrazolium dye so that we could track the reversal frequencies of single cells and cells in groups. We found that developmental cells in large groups reverse much less than cells in small groups or as single cells. This reduced cellular reversal frequency is related to the frz signal transduction system and correlated with the methylation of FrzCD (a methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein). Cells containing a mutation in the frz genes or in the genes required for social motility do not respond in this way. The reduction in cellular reversals as developmental cells accumulate in groups suggests a simple hypothesis for the aggregation of cells into discrete mounds during fruiting body formation. We also found that M. xanthus cells glide with equal frequency in the forward or reverse directions, indicating that cells do not contain a "head" or "tail."

The visual world is presented to the brain through patterns of action potentials in the population of optic nerve fibers. Single-neuron recordings show that each retinal ganglion cell has a spatially restricted receptive field, a limited integration time, and a characteristic spectral sensitivity. Collectively, these response properties define the visual message conveyed by that neuron's action potentials. Since the size of the optic nerve is strictly constrained, one expects the retina to generate a highly efficient representation of the visual scene. By contrast, the receptive fields of nearby ganglion cells often overlap, suggesting great redundancy among the retinal output signals. Recent multineuron recordings may help resolve this paradox. They reveal concerted firing patterns among ganglion cells, in which small groups of nearby neurons fire synchronously with delays of only a few milliseconds. As there are many more such firing patterns than ganglion cells, such a distributed code might allow the retina to compress a large number of distinct visual messages into a small number of optic nerve fibers. This paper will review the evidence for a distributed coding scheme in the retinal output. The performance limits of such codes are analyzed with simple examples, illustrating that they allow a powerful trade-off between spatial and temporal resolution.

INTRODUÇÃO: o câncer é a doença que mais mata pessoas com idade abaixo de 85 anos e é um problema de saúde pública. Os tumores podem expressar em determinada fase de seu desenvolvimento proteínas anômalas que podem ser alvo de métodos diagnósticos e de intervenções terapêuticas. A expressão de NY-ESO-1 é detectada em 20 a 40% dos melanomas. Há evidências que esta expressão é mais freqüente em tumores de estágios mais avançados e está associada a um pior prognóstico. OBJETIVOS: determinar a frequência de expressão da proteína NY-ESO-1 no melanoma cutâneo e tentar correlacioná-la com o índice de Breslow, aspectos histopatológicos do melanoma, incluindo o infiltrado linfocítico tumoral, e a morbi-mortalidade dos pacientes. MÉTODOS: o presente estudo é longitudinal de coorte retrospectiva e foi realizado de agosto de 2009 a outubro de 2015. Foram selecionados 89 melanomas de 87 pacientes do Ambulatório de Tumores do Departamento de Dermatologia da FMUSP, divididos em 3 grupos, sendo: grupo 1: 34 melanomas com índice de Breslow <= 1,0 mm; grupo 2: 29 melanomas com índice de Breslow entre 1,1 - 4,0 mm e grupo 3: 26 melanomas com índice de Breslow >= 4,0 mm. As lâminas dos exames anátomo-patológicos destes pacientes foram revisadas quanto ao diagnóstico de melanoma, seu índice de Breslow e a presença de infiltrado linfocítico tumoral. A seguir, realizou-se exame de imunohistoquímica para a determinação da presença do antígeno NY-ESO-1 em todos os 89 tumores coletados e em mais 20 nevos (11 displásicos e 9 intradérmicos) escolhidos ao acaso. Através da revisão dos dados do prontuário, foram obtidos os dados clínicos de: idade, sexo, raça, fototipo da pele, local de aparecimento do melanoma, status do linfonodo sentinela quando realizado, desenvolvimento de metástases e sobrevida dos pacientes. Os dados anátomo-patológicos do tumor analisados foram: tipo histológico, presença de ulceração, e tipo de infiltrado linfocítico tumoral. Nos melanomas que apresentavam infiltrado linfocítico tumoral, foram realizados testes imunohistoquímicos para pesquisa de células CD3+, CD8+, FoxP3+ e CD8+FoxP3+ (duplamente positivas). RESULTADOS: O antígeno NY-ESO-1 esteve presente em 19% dos melanomas cutâneos primários e não foi detectado em nenhum dos 20 nevos pesquisados. A expressão do antígeno NY-ESO-1 esteve estatisticamente relacionada a tumores com espessuras maiores. Apresentou também uma associação inversa com o tipo extensivo superficial em relação aos outros tipos histológicos. O infiltrado linfocítico tumoral dos melanomas NY-ESO-1 positivos continha menor número de células CD3+, que se encontravam isoladas ou arranjadas em pequenos grupos de até 5 células, o que contrastava significantemente com os tumores NY-ESO-1 negativos, com maior densidade de células CD3+, dispostas em grandes grupos, com 6 ou mais células. A expressão da proteína NY-ESO-1 não esteve associada à idade, ao sexo, ao fototipo, ao sítio primário do tumor, à presença de ulceração, ao status do linfonodo sentinela, ao desenvolvimento de metástases ou à sobrevida. CONCLUSÕES: Há expressão de NY-ESO-1 em uma porcentagem considerável dos melanomas, principalmente nos mais espessos. O menor número de células CD3+ no infiltrado linfocítico tumoral, acrescido ao fato destas células estarem isoladas ou em pequenos grupos, sugere que embora imunogênico, a expressão do antígeno NY-ESO-1 não resulta num estímulo eficaz do sistema imune no combate ao tumor. O desenvolvimento de uma vacina para estes pacientes poderá, no futuro, aumentar as possibilidades terapêuticas do melanoma

The adaptation of the Spanish University to the European Higher Education Area (EEES in Spanish) demands the integration of new tools and skills that would make the teaching- learning process easier. This adaptation involves a change in the evaluation methods, which goes from a system where the student was evaluated with a final exam, to a new system where we include a continuous evaluation in which the final exam may represent at most 50% in the vast majority of the Universities. Devising a new and fair continuous evaluation system is not an easy task to do. That would mean a student’s’ learning process follow-up by the teachers, and as a consequence an additional workload on existing staff resources. Traditionally, the continuous evaluation is associated with the daily work of the student and a collection of the different marks partly or entirely based on the work they do during the academic year. Now, small groups of students and an attendance control are important aspects to take into account in order to get an adequate assessment of the students. However, most of the university degrees have groups with more than 70 students, and the attendance control is a complicated task to perform, mostly because it consumes significant amounts of staff time. Another problem found is that the attendance control would encourage not-interested students to be present at class, which might cause some troubles to their classmates. After a two year experience in the development of a continuous assessment in Statistics subjects in Social Science degrees, we think that individual and periodical tasks are the best way to assess results. These tasks or examinations must be done in classroom during regular lessons, so we need an efficient system to put together different and personal questions in order to prevent students from cheating. In this paper we provide an efficient and effective way to elaborate random examination papers by using Sweave, a tool that generates data, graphics and statistical calculus from the software R and shows results in PDF documents created by Latex. In this way, we will be able to design an exam template which could be compiled in order to generate as many PDF documents as it is required, and at the same time, solutions are provided to easily correct them.

Cooperative learning has been successfully implemented in the last 60 years for teaching at different educational levels including the Higher Studies due to its solid theoretical foundation, the principles it proposes and its practical applications. The purpose of this article is to offer a proposal for some cooperative activities that allow students to work in small groups in a language subject in order to learn not only contents but also putting into practice what they learn, i.e., they learn by being active. This article discusses how the said activities make it possible for students to work with the main principles of cooperative learning, i.e.: positive interdependence, face-to-face interaction, individual and group accountability, interpersonal and small-group skills and group processing. Moreover, this research will also point out that the proposed activities allow students to acquire some of the social competences required in the labour market such as leadership, conflict solving and cooperation.

Adopting a social identity perspective, the research was designed to examine the interplay between premerger group status and integration pattern in the prediction of responses to a merger. The research employed a 2 (status: high versus low) x 3 (integration pattern: assimilation versus integrational equality versus transformation) between-participants factorial design. We predicted that integration pattern and group status would interact such that the responses of the members of high status group would be most positive under conditions of an assimilation pattern, whereas members of low status groups were expected to favour an integration-equality pattern. After working on a task in small groups, group status was manipulated and the groups worked on a second task. The merger was then announced and the integration pattern was manipulated (e.g., in terms of the logo, location, and decision rules). The main dependent variables were assessed after the merged groups had worked together on a third task. As expected, there was evidence that the effects of group status on responses to the merger were moderated by integration pattern. Field data also indicated that both premerger status and perceived integration pattern influenced employee responses to an organisational merger.

The way in which the huge Australian parasite fauna is described (discovery and naming) is the subject of this address. The approach to the task has never been well-organised so that a few groups of parasites are now relatively well-known because of the efforts of small groups of workers who have made sustained efforts in these groups, but equally some host-parasite systems have been almost completely ignored in that no worker has ever given them sustained attention. A high proportion of Australian parasites have been described by international workers; The sustaining of interest in a group of parasites over a long period is the key to real progress being made. The nature of the organisation of Australian science presently means that few positions are available for parasite taxonomists and funding for taxonomic research is scarce. Thus, parasite taxonomy (like the taxonomy of many groups of Australian plants and animals) can only be considered to be in crisis. (C) 2003 Australian Society for Parasitology Inc. This study investigated the influences of various natural and anthropogenic factors on the vigilance and flight behaviour of impalas in the Save Valley Conservancy, Zimbabwe, using multivariate statistical techniques. The factor that most significantly affected the proportions of time that individuals spent being vigilant and their rates of vigilance was the position of a focal animal in the group; impalas on the periphery of a group were more vigilant than central impalas. Both measures of vigilance were also negatively related to group size. Males spent more total time being vigilant but females raised their heads more often. Impalas spent more time being vigilant in the late afternoon than in the early morning, when greater than ten metres from cover, and when predators had been nearby within the previous six hours. Impalas spent more time vigilant at the property where more impalas were hunted, possibly reflecting the differences in the intensity of hunting by humans on the two properties. Flight distances at the approach of humans were significantly greater at one property than the other, and were also greater for small groups. Further research into the effects of hunting by humans on animals' antipredator behaviours would provide valuable insights for wildlife managers.

Small groups of athletes (maximum size 8) were taught to voluntarily control their finger temperature, in a test of the feasibility of thermal biofeedback as a tool for coaches. The objective was to decrease precompetitive anxiety among the 140 young, competitive athletes (track and field, N=61; swimming, N=79), 66 females and 74 males, mean age 14.8 years, age range 8.9-20.5 years, from local high schools and swimming clubs. The biofeedback (visual and auditory) was provided by small, battery-powered devices that were connected to thermistors attached to the middle finger of the dominant hand. An easily readable digital LCD display, in 0.01 degrees C increments, provided visual feedback, while a musical tone, which descended in pitch with increased finger temperature, provided the audio component via small headphones. Eight twenty minute sessions were scheduled, with 48 hours between sessions. The measures employed in this prestest-posttest study were Levenson's locus of control scale (IPC), and the Competitive Sport Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2). Traditional measures of termite food preference assess consequences of foraging behavior such as wood consumption, aggregation and/or termite survivorship. Although studies have been done to investigate the specifics of foraging behavior this is not generally integrated into choice assay experiments. Here choice assays were conducted with small isolated (orphaned) groups of workers and compared with choice assays involving foragers from whole nests (non-orphaned) in the laboratory. Aggregation to two different wood types was used as a measure of preference. Specific worker caste and instars participating in initial exploration were compared between assay methods, with samples of termites taken from nest carton material and sites where termites were feeding. Aggregation results differ between choice assay techniques. Castes and instars responsible for initial exploration, as determined in whole nest trials, were not commonly found exploring in isolated group trials, nor were they numerous in termites taken from active feeding sites. Consequently the use of small groups of M. turneri worker termites extracted from active feeding sites may not be appropriate for use in choice assays.

The consequences of demographic dissimilarity for group trust in work teams was examined in a virtual (computer-mediated) and a face-to-face (FTF) environment. Demographic dissimilarity (based on age, gender, country of birth, enrolled degree) was predicted to be negatively associated with group trust in the FTF environment but not in the computer-mediated environment. Participants worked in small groups on a creative task for 3 consecutive days. In the computer-mediated environment, participants worked on the task for an hour per day. In the FTF environment, participants worked on the task for 20 minutes per day. Partial support was found for the effectiveness of computer-mediated groups in reducing the negative consequences of dissimilarity. Age dissimilarity was negatively related to trust in FTF groups but not in computer-mediated groups. Birthplace dissimilarity was positively related to trust in computer-mediated groups. Implications for the successful management of virtual teams are discussed.

Problem structuring methods (PSMs) aim to build shared understanding in a group of decision makers. This shared understanding is used as a basis for them to negotiate an agreed action plan that they are prepared to help implement. Engaging in a social process of negotiation with a large number of people is difficult, and so PSMs have typically focused on small groups of less than 20. This paper explores the legitimacy of deploying PSMs in large groups of people (50–1000), where the aim is to negotiate action and build commitment to its implementation. We review the difficulties of facilitating large groups with PSMs, drawing heavily on our experience of working with over 25 large groups. We offer a range of lessons learned and suggest concrete approaches to facilitating large groups to achieve the objectives of PSMs. This paper contributes to the evaluation and development of PSMs.

The social processes involved in engaging small groups of 3-15 managers in their sharing, organising, acquiring, creating and using knowledge can be supported with software and facilitator assistance. This paper introduces three such systems that we have used as facilitators to support groups of managers in their social process of decision-making by managing knowledge during face-to-face meetings. The systems include Compendium, Group Explorer (with Decision Explorer) and V*I*S*A. We review these systems for group knowledge management where the aim is for better decision-making, and discuss the principles of deploying each in a group meeting. © 2006 Operational Research Society Ltd. Facilitated by an Engineer and a Social Scientist, both of whom have expertise in Engineering Education Research and Evaluation (EERE), this interactive workshop is divided into three main sections, each one focusing on a different area of evaluation. It will build on research conducted at Aston University School of Engineering and Applied Science to explore and critique the value of introducing CDIO across the first year undergraduate curriculum. Participants will be invited to consider the pedagogical and engineering related challenges of evaluating the academic and practical value of CDIO as a strategy for learning and teaching in the discipline. An empirical approach to evaluation developed by the researchers to provide empirically grounded evidence of the pedagogical and vocational value of CDIO will form the theoretical and conceptual basis of the workshop. This approach is distinctive in that it encapsulates both engineering and social science methods of evaluation. It is also contemporaneous in nature, with the researchers acting as a ‘fly on the wall’ capturing data as the programme unfolds. Through facilitated discussion and participation, the workshop will provide colleagues with the opportunity to develop a cross-disciplinary, empirically grounded research proposal specifically for the purposes of critically evaluating CDIO. It is anticipated that during the workshop, colleagues will work together in small groups. Suitable pedagogical approaches and tools will be suggested and a purposefully developed Engineering Education Research Guide, written by the workshop facilitators, will be given to all participants to inform and support the Workshop approach.
