Introduction As students become more connected with the internet and other current technologies, the school of nursing has continued to investigate more innovative, meaningful, and effective uses of technology. One particular technology whose use has increased is the portable music/video player. Like the cell phone, mp3 players and iPods have become a standard accessory for students. To capitalize on this popular technology the School has started several pilot projects involving podcasting under graduate and graduate nursing classes and has also been involved in one research project using video iPods. Introduction: Clinical medical education is increasingly utilizing novel technological approaches in order to supplement traditional lecture-based didactics. The Neurology Core Clerkship at Baylor College of Medicine is a four week required course taken by clinical medical students. Given the large amount of information to be disseminated in a short period of time, part of the didactic material has been provided online in the form of narrated PowerPoint files or lecture audio tracks along with stand-alone PowerPoint files. The narrated files are generated using the native PowerPoint narration function while the stand-alone audio files are created as MP3 format files using an inexpensive digital recording device.

Introduction: Video‐Supported Learning is particularly effective when it comes to skills and behaviors. Video registration of patient‐physician interviews, class room instruction or practical skills allow it to learners themselves, their peers, and their tutors to assess the quality of the learner's performance, to give specific feedback, and to make suggestions for improvement. Methods: In Switzerland, four pedagogical universities and two medical faculties joined to initiate the development of a national infrastructure for Video Supported Learning. The goal was to have a system that is simple to use, has most steps automated, provides the videos over the Internet, and has a sophisticated access control. Together with SWITCH, the national IT‐Support‐Organisation for Swiss Universities, the program iVT (Individual Video Training) was developed by integrating two preexisting technologies. The first technology is SWITCHcast, a podcast system. With SWITCHcast, videos are automatically uploaded to a server as soon as the registration is over. There the videos are processed and converted to different formats. The second technology is the national Single Logon System AAI (Authentification and Authorization Infrastructure) that enables iVT to link each video with the corresponding learner. The learner starts the registration with his Single Logon. Thus, the video can unambiguously be assigned. Via his institution's Learning Management System (LMS), the learner can access his video and give access to his video to peers and tutors. Results: iVT is now used at all involved institutions. The system works flawlessly. In Bern, we use iVT for the communications skills training in the forth and sixth year. Since students meet with patient actors alone, iVT is also used to certify attendance. Students are encouraged to watch the videos of the interview and the feedback of the patient actor. The offer to discuss a video with a tutor was not used by the students. Discussion: We plan to expand the use of iVT by making peer assessment compulsory. To support this, annotation capabilities are currently added to iVT. We also want to use iVT in training of practical skills, again for self as well as for peer assessment.  At present, we use iVT for quality control of patient actor's performance.

Perhaps it was foreshadowing the influence emerging technologies would have on health when the term "podcast" beat out "bird flu" for the 2005 word of the year, an honor given by The New Oxford American Dictionary. From medical school courses to medical journal summaries, podcasting has found a niche in the health field and with studies showing a high proportion of people using the Internet to seek health information, it is imperative that the online information be accurate and easily accessible. With the responsibility of health departments to reach out to their respective communities with effective health communication strategies, this study assessed the proportion of 50 states' and the District of Columbia's health departments utilizing podcasting as a tool for health communication. Additionally, to assess any trends, the prevalence of podcasting was compared to select state demographic characteristics (age, sex, and median income), the organization of the health department (freestanding or super-agency), and the respective United Health Foundation 2007 health ranking. ^ Prevalence data were collected from each state health department's website to find evidence of podcasting to any extent. If a podcast was present, characteristics including creator, release frequency, and transcript were further assessed. The study found that 51% (26/51) of all health departments were utilizing podcasts in some capacity and almost 20% (5/26) of these had created their own podcasts. The most common use of podcasting was to link to outside podcast resources, most notably, the Centers for Disease Control's podcast series. No significant associations were found between the state-specific variables and the podcasting outcomes; however, higher percentages of young adults in some states suggest potential podcasting opportunities for targeting these known podcast users with age-specific health messages. Another recommendation is a future assessment of local health departments' use of podcasting as their smaller, more defined target audiences may be a more efficient use of podcasting as a health communication tool. Additionally, there is a need for evaluations of podcasts' overall effectiveness as a health communication tool to (1) reach a target audience; and (2) convey a specific health message. In conclusion, the findings from this project illuminate the extent of podcast influence in states' and the District of Columbia's health departments as a health communication tool; however evaluations of effectiveness are imperative for future studies.^
