Daily pocket journal of John and Hannah Winthrop, 1766-1779

Small printed daily pocket journal repurposed by both John and Hannah between 1766 and 1779 to record household accounts including livestock pasturing, income received, and payments to servants, merchants, and tradesmen for food, livestock, clothing, linen, etc. Many of the pages are unused. The January-April pages contain account records from 1766-1779, one page in June has a few accounting notes from September 1779, the rest of June-November is empty, and three books are listed on a November page. The last three calendar pages contain lists of books in Hannah's handwriting dated 1773 and August 1768.

Handwritten order to John Sale to pay scholarship funds Joseph Belknap for use by student Samuel Sewall (Harvard AB 1776), signed by Charles Chauncey, Thomas Waite, Jonathan Williams, and Daniel Marsh.

Tutors grants for £77.8.4, 1773

Handwritten receipt signed by Joseph Willard, John Marsh, John Marsh, Andrew Eliot Jr., John Wadsworth, and S. Hall acknowledging money received between August 20th and 23rd, 1773. A handwritten transcription of the Corporation vote on September 7, 1772 that, "the Tutors be allowed in addition to their salary twenty pounds," is signed as a true copy by President Samuel Locke at the beginning of the document.

Annotated almanac, 1773

Almanac with minimal and sporadic annotations on the calendar pages by John Winthrop. The title page is inscribed "Man wants but little here below, / nor wants that little long" in Winthrop's hand. There are a few entries noting household activities and the weather including a drought.

Almanac containing two laid-in pages and calendar pages typically annotated with one or two notes at the bottom recording household activities in Hannah and John Winthrops' hands. Laid into the volume are two pieces of paper with a tabulation of butter in Hannah Winthrop's hand, and baptisms and deaths in the community, and a bill of mortality for 1773 in John Winthrop's hand, and a chart of burials and baptisms for the first parish in Cambridge for the years 1764-1771.

John Winthrop's proposal respecting electrical globes and jars, ca. 1758

In this proposal, John Winthrop explains the need to replace damaged "electric globes" used in the College's collection of scientific apparatus. He states that Benjamin Franklin, at the time residing in London, was willing to seek replacement globes for the College's collection. Winthrop then proceeds to assert that the College should acquire "square bottles, of a moderate size, fitted in a wooden box, like what they call case bottles for spirits" instead of the large jars included in the scientific apparatus, because those jars cracked frequently.

Notebook of John Allen, 1772

Paper-covered notebook containing handwritten poems and verse by Harvard graduate John Allen. Some of the poems refer to Allen’s illnesses in October 1772. The notebook also contains a short list titled “The Gentleman that I wrote diplomas for," with a list of sixteen individuals who received degrees from Harvard. The inside cover includes the inscription: “John Allen – November 4, 1772. Poetic Composition.” “Dr. T. C. Gilman” is stamped on cover.

The summary of a course of experimental lectures in natural philosophy by Dr. John Winthrop (manuscript copy), 1772-1774

Notebook with a handwritten copy of lecture summaries for a physics course given by Harvard Professor John Winthrop. The notes were made by Timothy Foster in 1772 and 1773. The volume contains twenty-five lectures with some diagrams.

Bill and receipt, 1773

Handwritten contract between John Simonds and Andrew Bordman for writing work done by Simonds' son, William Simonds, "who is under age," signed January 15, 1773, and a receipt for payment signed by William Simonds, July 28, 1773.

The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Kalianpur 1975 India Zone III projected coordinate system. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as drainage, cities and other human settlements, territorial and administrative boundaries, shoreline features, and more.
