A copper phthalocyanine/multiwalled carbon nanotube film-modified glassy carbon electrode has been used for the determination of the herbicide glyphosate (Gly) at -50 mV vs. SCE by electrochemical oxidation using differential pulse voltamtnetry (DPV). Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that Gly is adsorbed on the metallic centre of the copper phthalocyanine molecule, with formation of Gly-copper ion complexes. An analytical method was developed using DPV in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution, without any pretreatment steps: Gly was determined in the concentration range of 0.83-9.90 mu mol L(-1), with detection limit 12.2 nmol L(-1) (2.02 mu g L(-1))

This paper presents a study of the electrocatalysis of ethanol oxidation reactions in an acidic medium on Pt-CeO(2)/C (20 wt.% of Pt-CeO(2) on carbon XC-72R), prepared in different mass ratios by the polymeric precursor method. The mass ratios between Pt and CeO(2) (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural characterization data shows that the Pt-CeO(2)/C catalysts are composed of nanosized polycrystalline non-alloyed deposits, from which reflections corresponding to the fcc (Pt) and fluorite (CeO(2)) structures were clearly observed. The mean crystallite sizes calculated from XRD data revealed that, independent of the mass ratio, a value close to 3 nm was obtained for the CeO(2) particles. For Pt, the mean crystallite sizes were dependent on the ratio of this metal in the catalysts. Low platinum ratios resulted in small crystallites. and high Pt proportions resulted in larger crystallites. The size distributions of the catalysts particles, determined by XRD, were confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) imaging. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometic experiments were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of the different materials. In all cases, except Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:1, the Pt-Ceo(2)/C catalysts exhibited improved performance when compared with Pt/C. The best result was obtained for the Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:3 catalyst, which gave better results than the Pt-Ru/C (Etek) catalyst. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Instead of a time-invariant voltammetric profile, many electrochemical systems display a cycle-dependent current-potential response. This phenomenon has been referred to as complex voltammetric response and it has been observed during the electro-oxidation of several molecules such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and hydrogen. There are currently two explanations for the surface mechanism underlying this behavior. In one scenario, the complex voltammogram would result from the specific kinetic pathway taken during the forward sweep. In the other explanation, the phenomenon is discussed in terms of the interplay among the surface roughening and subsequent relaxation, and the ohmic drop coupled to a negative differential resistance. We report in this paper a nanogravimetric investigation of the complex voltammetric response in the electro-oxidation of methanol on platinum electrode in both acidic and alkaline media. Different periodic patterns composed of intercalated small and large hysteresis cycles were observed as a function of the applied voltage and the series resistance between the working electrode and the potentiostat. Independently, nanogravimetric results indicated no detectable difference in the delta-frequency versus voltage profile between small and large hysteresis cycles. These findings were interpreted as experimental evidence of the secondary, if any, role played by the very electrochemical reaction on the emergence of complex voltammetric response. Ordered intermetallic phases of Pt with several transition metals have been prepared and their electrocatalytic properties studied. In light of these tests it is proposed that these catalysts could be used as electrodes in fuel cells, as they combine an excellent capacity to adsorb organic fuels at the Pt sites with low susceptibility to being poisoned by intermediates and reaction products at the transition-metal sites. An experimental procedure used to obtain the four intermetallic phases Pt-M (M = Mn, Pb, Sb and Sn) is described. The phases thus produced were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with surface analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The data thus obtained support the conclusion that the method described here is highly effective for the preparation of Pt-M phases featuring a range of structural and electronic modifications that will allow a useful relation to be established between their physicochemical properties and predicted electrocatalytic activity. This describes an experimental evaluation of the electrocatalytic activity of the hydrogen oxidation reaction on electrodes of platinum and the ordered intermetallic phases PtSb and PtSn, on which CO has previously been deposited. The experiments were carried out in perchloric acid solution and the analysis based on steady-state polarization curves and Tafel plots derived from chronoamperometric data. Both intermetallics, PtSb and PtSn, performed better than Pt towards the HOR, when their surface was deliberately covered with CO. It is suggested that the intermetallic surfaces have a lower affinity for CO molecules, causing a lower CO coverage on these surfaces, and/or a weaker surface-CO interaction, compared to Pt under the same conditions. The effect of film orientation on piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of bismuth layered compounds deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates was investigated. Piezo-force microscopy was used to probe the local piezoelectric properties of Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12), CaBi(4)Ti(4)O(15) and SrBi(4)Ti(4)O(15) films. Our measurements on individual grains clearly reveal that the local piezoelectric properties are determined by the polarization state of the grain. A piezoelectric coefficient of 65 pm/V was attained after poling in a grain with a polar axis very close to the normal direction. The piezoelectric coefficient and the remanent polarization were larger for a-b axes oriented than for c-axis-oriented films. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

The film thickness dependence on the ferroelectric properties of lanthanum modified bismuth titanate Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 was investigated. Films with thicknesses ranging from 230 to 404 nut were grown on platinum-coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method. The internal strain is strongly influenced by the film thickness. The morphology of the film changes as the number of layers increases indicating a thickness dependent grain size. The leakage current, remanent polarization and drive voltage were also affected by the film thickness. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mercury thin films prepared by electrochemical deposition on Pt-Ir alloy and after partial removing of mercury at different temperatures were studied by means of an interferometric surface mapping microscope and by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy. Mercury film samples having mercury partially removed by anodic stripping at a potential more positive than the corresponding peak in the voltammogram were also studied using the same techniques. For blank samples the surface topographic studies showed well defined grain boundaries. Mercury film samples when heated up to different temperatures showed as material is removed and that the surface roughness decreases as the temperature increases. For samples heated up to 800 degrees C the surface roughness is approximately the same that for the blank. A model for the interphase of volumetric mercury electrodeposited on a Pt-Ir alloy has been proposed using samples both electrochemically and thermally removed of their Hg coatings. The model includes a layered three-region structure, containing at least two Pt-Hg intermetallics: PtHg4 and PtHg2. A substrate modified region, iridium rich, has also been detected. Lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr 0.50Ti 0.50)O 3 (PZT) thin films were deposited by a polymeric chemical method on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates to understand the mechanisms of phase transformations and the effect of film thickness on the structure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties in these films. PZT films pyrolyzed at temperatures higher than 350 °C present a coexistence of pyrochlore and perovskite phases, while only perovskite phase grows in films pyrolyzed at temperatures lower than 300 °C. For pyrochlore-free PZT thin films, a small (100) orientation tendency near the film-substrate interface was observed. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of a self-polarization effect in the studied PZT thin films. Results suggest that Schottky barriers and/or mechanical coupling near the filmsubstrate interface are not primarily responsible for the observed self-polarization effect in our films. © 2012 IEEE.

The electrooxidation of hydroxylamine, NH2OH, in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (PB, pH = 7) on Pt-, and Pd-modified Au electrodes prepared by galvanic displacement of underpotential deposited Cu, was investigated by electrochemical techniques and three and in situ vibrational probes, substrate-induced surface enhanced Raman scattering, SI-SERS, surface enhanced infrared absorption, SEIRAS, and Fourier transform infrared reflection-absorption, IRAS, spectroscopies. Analyses of the results obtained made it possible to identify at low overpotentials, solution phase (sol) and adsorbed (ads) nitric oxide, NO, as well as solution phase nitrous oxide, N2O. As the potential was increased, the peak(s) ascribed to NO(ads) gained in intensity and new features associated with NO2−(ads) and NO2−(sol) were clearly discerned. Further excursion toward higher potentials yielded an additional peak assigned to NO2(ads). This behavior is analogous to that found for bare Au electrodes in a potential region in which the metal is at least partially oxidized under otherwise the same experimental conditions.

An interesting method to investigate the effect of fuel crossover in low temperature fuel cells consists of studying the open circuit interaction between the reducing fuel and an oxide-covered catalyst. Herein we report the experimental study of the open circuit interaction between borohydride and oxidized platinum surfaces in alkaline media. When compared to the case of hydrogen and other small organic molecules, two remarkable new features were observed. Firstly, the interaction with borohydride resulted in a very-fast reduction process with transient times about two to three orders of magnitude smaller. The second peculiarity was that the decrease of the open circuit potential was found to occur in two-stages and this, previously unseen, feature was correlated with the two-hump profile found in the backward sweep in the cyclic voltammogram The consequences of our findings are discussed in connection with fundamental and applied aspects.
