The electrochemical behavior of SnO2-SbOx, based electrodes, with and without the addition of RuO2, was studied by cyclic voltammetry, service life measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M H2SO4 the physical characteristics of these materials were investigated using SEM, EDX and XRD. The resulting cyclic voltammograms obtained using SnO2-SbOx, and SnO2-SbOx-RuO2(x), x = 30, 5, 1 and 0.4 % showed that the OER overpotential decreased with the addition of RuO2. In the repetitive triangular potential voltammetry applied to the SnO2 electrode without and with RuO2 (1%), a higher anodic current is observed during the first potential scan; it is explained in terms of the oxidation of the Ti substrate. The addition of 1% RuO2 increased the service life from 8 to 20 hours at 10 mAcm(-2), while at 50 mAcm(-2) this increase was from 1 to 8 hours. AC Impedance diagrams obtained for the Ti/SnO2-SbOx and Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 electrodes at the rest potential and at a potential in the OER region can be explained by a single equivalent circuit containing two elements in series. The results showed that the charge transfer resistance and the resistance of the oxide film are lower in the oxide film containing RuO2. Surface analysis of Ti/SnO2-SbOx, revealed that it is relatively porous and formed by clusters of small particles. The Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 (1%) film is more compact, though. XRD analysis showed that a Sn1-xTixO2 oxide is formed on the Ti/SnO2-SbOx with 1% and without RuO2 electrodes.

This work presents the synthesis of the complex [Fe(L)(2)](PF6)(2) (.) H2O (L = 2,6-bis[1-(3-pyrrol-1-yl-propylimino)ethyl]pyridine (Fig. 1) and its characterization through elemental and thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and UV-Vis, IR and H-1 NMR spectra. The use of this compound in the preparation of modified electrodes is also described. The best electrochemical parameters to achieve optimum film formation have been established and the effects of both the upper-limit of the applied scanning potential (E-aul) and the number of scans on the efficiency of film formation have been investigated. Film surface morphology has been characterized by atomic force microscopy. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hydrogen interaction with oxide films grown on iron electrodes at open circuit potential (E-oc) and in the passive region (+0.30 V-ECS) was studied by chronopotentiometry, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. The results were obtained in deaerated 0.3 mol L-1 H3BO3 + 0.075 mol L-1 Na2B4O7 (BB, pH 8.4) solution before, during and after hydrogen permeation. The iron oxide film modification was also investigated by means of in situ X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) before and during hydrogen permeation. The main conclusion was that the passive film is reduced during the hydrogen diffusion. The hydrogen permeation stabilizes the iron surface at a potential close to the thermodynamic water stability line where hydrogen evolution can occur. The stationary condition required for the determination of the permeation parameters cannot be easily attained on iron surface during hydrogen permeation. Moreover, additional attention must be paid when obtaining the transport parameters using the classical permeation cell. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The formation of sulfated zirconia films from a sol-gel derived aqueous suspension is subjected to double-optical monitoring during batch dip coating. Interpretation of interferometric patterns, previously obscured by a variable refractive index, is now made possible by addition of its direct measurement by a polarimetric technique in real time. Significant sensitivity of the resulting physical thickness and refractive index curves (uncertainties of ±7 nm and ±0.005, respectively) to temporal film evolution is shown under different withdrawal speeds. As a first contribution to quantitative understanding of temporal film formation with varying nanostructure during dip coating, detailed analysis is directed to the stage of the process dominated by mass drainage, whose simple modeling with temporal t-1/2 dependence is verified experimentally. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The electrochemical behaviour of copper in 6.0 mol 1-1 sulfuric acid at 30°C, was studied by means of the potentiodynamic method. At low potential sweep rates, v < 200 m V s-1, the data reveal that the anodic process is basically constituted of copper dissolution and a film formation which inhibits further metal oxidation and which may undergo further dissolution. For higher potential sweep rates, a modification in the passivation region of the voltammogram is observed. It can be ascribed to a change in the passivation mechanism which possibly involves different surface species. The kineticrelationships derived from the potentiodynamic I/E curves obtained at low v suggest a film formation via a dissolution/precipitation mechanism. © 1993.

The main aim of this work was to study the simultaneous wear-corrosion of titanium (Ti) in the presence of biofilms composed of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. Both organisms were separately grown in specific growth media, and then mixed in a medium supplemented with a high sucrose concentration. Corrosion and tribocorrosion tests were performed after 48 h and 216 h of biofilm growth. Electrochemical corrosion tests indicated a decrease in the corrosion resistance of Ti in the presence of the biofilms although the TiO2 film presented the characteristics of a compact oxide film. While the open circuit potential of Ti indicated a tendency to corrosion in the presence of the biofilms, tribocorrosion tests revealed a low friction on biofilm covered Ti. The properties of the biofilms were similar to those of the lubricant agents used to decrease the wear rate of materials. However, the pH-lowering promoted by microbial species, can lead to corrosion of Ti-based oral rehabilitation systems.
