The electrocatalytic oxidation of 1-propanol was investigated on platinum electrodes modified by submonolayers of Pb and Sn in acid media. An increase of oxidation rates observed for both Pb and Sn, and the influence of theta values was investigated. The values of the apparent activation energy evaluated from the Arrhenius plots concerning the electrochemical oxidation of 1-propanol on modified platinzed platinum electrodes, reveal a significant decrease in the presence of upd Sn and Ph adatoms. A decrease from 56 to 26 U mol(-1) in the presence of Sn. and from 78 to 25 U mol(-1) for Ph adatoms are some illustrative values which reflect the promoting effect of the upd adatoms.

This paper describes the preparation, characterization, and use of poly (methylene blue) (PMB)-modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) (GCE-PMB) in the detection of the thiols L-cysteine (L-CySH) and N-acetyl cysteine (Acy), and the herbicide glyphosate (GLYP) in pH 5.3 aqueous solution. The polymer film prepared by electropolymerization showed different characteristics such as robustness, stability, and redox properties satisfactorily. The surface coverage concentration (Gamma) of PMB was found to be 7.90 x 10(-9) - mol cm(-2). Moreover, we observed strong adhesion of the polymer film to the electrode surface. The results using GCE-PMB as a sensor indicated that this modified electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the detection of thiols and glyphosate in 0.1 mol L-1 KO (pH 5.3). Meanwhile, strong adsorption of the analytes on the GCE-PMB electrodes was also observed. Otherwise, using a low concentration (1 x 10(-4) mol L-1) of L-cysteine and N-acetyl cysteine and 8.9 x 10(-6) mol L-1 of glyphosate, separately, it was possible to observe a well-defined electrochemical response, thus providing an opportunity to further understand the applicability of PMB as a sensor for amino acid-based molecules. The effect of trace quantities of ammonia on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on carbon-supported platinum catalysts in perchloric acid solutions is assessed using rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) technique. The study demonstrates that ammonia has detrimental effects on ORR. The most significant effect takes place in the potential region above 0.7 V vs RHE. The effect is explained by the electrochemical oxidation of ammonia, which blocks Pt active sites and increases the formation of H2O2. This leads to losses in the disk currents and increments in the ring currents. The apparent losses in ORR currents may occur in two ways, namely, through the blocking of the active sites for ORR as well as by generating a small anodic current, which is believed to have a lower contribution. In addition, a detrimental effect of sodium cations in the potential range below 0.75 V vs RHE was demonstrated. This effect is most likely due to the co-adsorption of sodium cations and perchlorate anions on the Pt surface. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Pt extended surfaces and nanoparticle electrodes are used to understand the origin of anomalous activities for electrocatalytic reactions in alkaline electrolytes as a function of cycling/time. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of the surfaces before and after cycling in alkaline electrolytes was used to understand the morphology of the impurities and their impact on the catalytic sites. The nature of the contaminant species is identified as 3d-transition metal cations, and the formation of hydr(oxy)oxides of these elements is established as the main reason for the observed behavior. We find that, while for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) the blocking of the sites by the undesired 3d-transition metal hydr(oxy)oxide species leads to deactivation of the reaction activities, the CO oxidation reaction and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can have beneficial effects from the same impurities, the latter being dependent on the exact nature of the adsorbing species. These results show the significance of impurities present in real electrolytes and their impact on electrocatalysis.

The adsorption of NO on transition-metal (TM) surfaces has been widely studied by experimental and theoretical techniques; however, our atomistic understanding of the interaction of nitrogen monoxide (NO) with small TM clusters is far from satisfactory, which compromises a deep understanding of real catalyst devices. In this study, we report a density functional theory study of the adsorption properties of NO on the TM13 (TM = Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt) clusters employing the projected augmented wave method. We found that the interaction of NO with TM13 is much more complex than that for NO/TM(111). In particular, for low symmetry TM13 clusters, there is a strong rearrangement of the electronic charge density upon NO adsorption and, as a consequence, the adsorption energy shows a very complex dependence even for adsorption sites with the same local effective coordination. We found a strong enhancement of the binding energy of NO to the TM13 clusters compared with the TM(111) surfaces, as the antibonding NO states are not occupied for NO/TM13, and the general relationship based on the d-band model between adsorption energy and the center of gravity of the occupied d-states does not hold for the studied TM13 clusters, in particular, for clusters with low symmetry. In contrast with the adsorption energy trends, the geometric NO/TM13 parameters and the vibrational N-O frequencies for different coordination sites follow the same trend as for the respective TM(111) surfaces, while the changes in the frequencies between different surfaces and TM13 clusters reflect the strong NO-TM13 interaction.

On Au(111) electrodes, the investigation of ClO4− adsorption is hampered by a simultaneous surface reconstruction. We demonstrate that these two processes can be decoupled in cyclic voltammograms by a proper choice of the scan rate and of the initial potential. Our approach allowed the establishment of a relation between potentials of zero charge for the reconstructed and unreconstructed Au(111) surfaces.

We have investigated the influence of electrode material and crystallographic structure on electron transfer and biofilm formation of Geobacter sulfurreducens. Single-crystal gold - Au(110), Au(111), Au(210) - and platinum - Pt(100), Pt(110), Pt(111), Pt(210) - electrodes were tested and compared to graphite rods. G. sulfurreducens electrochemically interacts with all these materials with different attachment kinetics and final current production, although redox species involved in the electron transfer to the anode are virtually the same in all cases. Initial bacterial colonization was fastest on graphite up to the monolayer level, whereas gold electrodes led to higher final current densities. Crystal geometry showed to have an important influence, with Au(210) sustaining a current density of up to 1442 (± 101) μA cm- 2 at the steady state, over Au(111) with 961 (± 94) μA cm- 2 and Au(110) with 944 (± 89) μA cm- 2. On the other hand, the platinum electrodes displayed the lowest performances, including Pt(210). Our results indicate that both crystal geometry and electrode material are key parameters for the efficient interaction of bacteria with the substrate and should be considered for the design of novel materials and microbial devices to optimize energy production.

A novel approach is presented to determine mercury in urine samples, employing vortex-assisted ionic liquid dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction and microvolume back-extraction to prepare samples, and screen-printed electrodes modified with gold nanoparticles for voltammetric analysis. Mercury was extracted directly from non-digested urine samples in a water-immiscible ionic liquid, being back-extracted into an acidic aqueous solution. Subsequently, it was determined using gold nanoparticle-modified screen-printed electrodes. Under optimized microextraction conditions, standard addition calibration was applied to urine samples containing 5, 10 and 15 μg L−1 of mercury. Standard addition calibration curves using standards between 0 and 20 μg L−1 gave a high level of linearity with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.990 to 0.999 (N = 5). The limit of detection was empirical and statistically evaluated, obtaining values that ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 μg L−1, and from 1.1 to 1.3 μg L−1, respectively, which are significantly lower than the threshold level established by the World Health Organization for normal mercury content in urine (i.e., 10–20 μg L−1). A certified reference material (REC-8848/Level II) was analyzed to assess method accuracy finding 87% and 3 μg L−1 as the recovery (trueness) and standard deviation values, respectively. Finally, the method was used to analyze spiked urine samples, obtaining good agreement between spiked and found concentrations (recovery ranged from 97 to 100%).

Pt catalyst series were prepared on mesoporous SBA-15, SBA-16, KIT-6, true liquidcrystal-templated meso-macroporous SBA-15 and a commercial, low surface area silicasupport. Support structure can be easily fabricated using surfactant templating as a mode ofstringent control on porosity, surface area and internal structure. The impact of varying Pt-support physicochemical properties was systematically studied for the selective transformation of allylic substrates under chemoselective oxidation and hydrogenation regimes, a class of reactions highly applicable to industry. Pt-based heterogeneous catalysts are well-known for their utilisation in the hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, although the mode of action and lack of systematic studies in the literature fuels continuing debate into the role of Pt nanoparticles and support choice for this area. This project attempts to shed some light on several frequently asked questions in this field. Successful support synthesis and stability after Pt impregnation is confirmed through HRTEM, XRD and N2 porosimetry. Decreasing metal loading promoted dispersion values, regardless of support choice, with surface PtO2 content also showing visible enhancement.Increasing support surface area and mesoporosity exhibited the following trend on Pt dispersion augmentation; low surface area commercial silica < true liquid crystal-templated SBA-15 < SBA-15 < SBA-16 ~ KIT-6. For the selective oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol, increasing PtO2 surface population confers substantial rate enhancements, with turnover frequencies evidencing PtO2 to be the active species .In the Pt-catalysed hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, strong support insensitivity was observed towards catalytic activity; as turnover frequencies normalised to Pt metal reveal constant values. However, structure sensitivity to the desired unsaturated alcohol arose, evidencing the requirement of flat, extended Pt (111) facets for C=O hydrogenation. Pt/SBA-15 proved the most selective, reflecting suppressed cinnamyl alcohol hydrogenation, with DRIFTS and in-situ ATR-IR evidencing the key role of support polarity in re-orientation of cinnamaldehyde to favour di-σCO adsorption and C=O versus C=C hydrogenation. High pressures increased activity, whilst a dramatic shift in selectivity from dominant C=C (1 bar)to C=O hydrogenation (10 bar) was also observed, attributed to surface crowding and suppression of di-σCC and η4 di-σCO+πC=C cinnamaldehyde binding modes.

Formic acid oxidation has been widely studied at Pt as a model reaction to understand fundamental aspects of electrocatalytic reactions in fuel cells. Electrocatalytic oxidation of formic acid takes place through two parallel pathways (direct and indirect). The indirect pathway proceeds via CO as an intermediate, which is known to be responsible for the poisoning of Pt and its consequent decrease in activity. Surface modification of Pt with ad-atoms is known to hinder this poisoning and promote the direct pathway. The incorporation of polymers (polyaniline, polycarbazole, polyindole) as supports also increases activity. Irreversibly adsorbed Sb and Bi on Pt are known to show high electrocatalytic activity for formic acid oxidation. This work presents the dependence of Sb and Bi irreversible adsorption on immersion time, metal solution concentration and pH. The activity of Sb and Bi modified Pt was correlated against immersion time and percent coverage of Pt by ad-atoms. Polyaniline support effects in combination with a Bi modified Pt catalyst showed enhancement in oxidation current compared to Pt-Bi.

Carbon nanowalls (CNWs) are self-assembled, free-standing, few-layered graphenenano-structures with large surface area, and thin graphene edges. For their application to nanobiotechnology, the effects of chemisorbed species on surface wettability were investigated. The surfaces of as-grown CNWs obtained using CH4/H2 mixture were hydrophilic. After Ar atmospheric pressure plasma treatments for up to 30 s, the contact angles of water droplets on the CNWs decreased from 51° to 5°, owing to a result of oxidation only at edges and surface defects. They increased up to 147° by CF4 plasma treatment at low pressure. The wide-range control of surface wettability of CNWs was realized by post-growth plasma treatments. We also demonstrated detection of bovine serum albumin using surface-modified CNWs as electrodes.

Sol-gel derived PbZrO3 (PZ) thin films have been deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate and according to the pseudotetragonal symmetry of PZ, the relatively preferred (110)t oriented phase formation has been noticed. The room temperature P‐E hysteresis loops have been observed to be slim by nature. The slim hysteresis loops are attributed to the [110]t directional antiparallel lattice motion of Pb ions and by the directionality of the applied electric field. Pure PZ formation has been characterized by the dielectric phase transition at 235 °C and antiferroelectric P‐E hysteresis loops at room temperature. Dielectric response has been characterized within a frequency domain of 100 Hz–1 MHz at various temperatures ranging from 40 to 350 °C. Though frequency dispersion of dielectric behaves like a Maxwell–Wagner type of relaxation, ω2 dependency of ac conductivity indicates that there must be G‐C equivalent circuit dominance at high frequency. The presence of trap charges in PZ has been determined by Arrhenius plots of ac conductivity. The temperature dependent n (calculated from the universal power law of ac conductivity) values indicate an anomalous behavior of the trapped charges. This anomaly has been explained by strongly and weakly correlated potential wells of trapped charges and their behavior on thermal activation. The dominance of circuit∕circuits resembling Maxwell–Wagner type has been investigated by logarithmic Nyquist plots at various temperatures and it has been justified that the dielectric dispersion is not from the actual Maxwell–Wagner-type response.

Multilayer lithium tantalate thin films were deposited on Pt-Si Si(111)/SiO2/TiO2/Pt(111)]substrates by sol-gel process. The films were annealed at different annealing temperatures (300, 450 and 650 degrees C) for 15 min. The films are polycrystalline at 650 degrees C and at other annealing conditions below 650 degrees C the films are in amorphous state. The films were characterized using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. The AFM of images show the formation of nanograins of uniform size (50 nm) at 650 degrees C. These polycrystalline films exhibit spontaneous polarization of 1.5 mu C/cm(2) at an application of 100 kV/cm. The dielectric constant of multilayer film is very small (6.4 at 10 kHz) as compared to that of single crystal. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thin films of Sn were deposited on Pt/Si substrates by sputtering technique and subjected to electrochemical lithiation studies. Electrochemical lithiation of Sn resulted in the formation of Sn-Li alloys of different compositions. Charging of Sn-coated Pt/Si electrodes was terminated at different potentials and the electrodes were examined for physicochemical properties. The scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images suggested that the Sn films expanded on lithiation. Roughness of the film increased with an increase in the quantity of Li present in Sn-Li alloy. Electrochemical impedance data suggested that the kinetics of charging became sluggish with an increase in the quantity of Li in Sn-Li alloy.
