A new circuit topology is proposed to replace the actual pulse transformer and thyratron based resonant modulator that supplies the 60 kV target potential for the ion acceleration of the On-Line Isotope Mass Separator accelerator, the stability of which is critical for the mass resolution downstream separator, at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The improved modulator uses two solid-state switches working together, each one based on the Marx generator concept, operating as series and parallel switches, reducing the stress on the series stacked semiconductors, and also as auxiliary pulse generator in order to fulfill the target requirements. Preliminary results of a 10 kV prototype, using 1200 V insulated gate bipolar transistors and capacitors in the solid-state Marx circuits, ten stages each, with an electrical equivalent circuit of the target, are presented, demonstrating both the improved voltage stability and pulse flexibility potential wanted for this new modulator.

We start by studying the existence of positive solutions for the differential equation u '' = a(x)u - g(u), with u ''(0) = u(+infinity) = 0, where a is a positive function, and g is a power or a bounded function. In other words, we are concerned with even positive homoclinics of the differential equation. The main motivation is to check that some well-known results concerning the existence of homoclinics for the autonomous case (where a is constant) are also true for the non-autonomous equation. This also motivates us to study the analogous fourth-order boundary value problem {u((4)) - cu '' + a(x)u = vertical bar u vertical bar(p-1)u u'(0) = u'''(0) = 0, u(+infinity) = u'(+infinity) = 0 for which we also find nontrivial (and, in some instances, positive) solutions.

OBJECTIVE: The rapid growth of the rubella virus in RC-IAL² with development of cytopathic effect, in response to rubella virus infection, is described. For purposes of comparison, the rubella virus RA-27/3 strain was titered simultaneously in the RC-IAL, Vero, SIRC and RK13 cell lines. METHODS: Rubella virus RA-27/3 strain are inoculated in the RC-IAL cell line (rabbit Kidney, Institute Adolfo Lutz). Plates containing 1.5x10(5) cells/ml of RC-IAL line were inoculated with 0.1ml s RA-27/3 strain virus containing 1x 10(4)TCID50/0.1ml. A 25% cytopathic effect was observed after 48 hours and 100% after 96 hours. The results obtained were compared to those observed with the SIRC, Vero and RK13 cell lines. Rubella virus was detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: With the results, it was possible to conclude that the RC-IAL cell line is a very good substrate for culturing rubella virus. The cells inoculated with rubella virus were examined by phase contrast microscopy and showed the characteristic rounded, bipolar and multipolar cells. The CPE in RC-IAL was observed in the first 48 hours and the curve of the increased infectivity was practically the same as observed in other cell lines. CONCLUSIONS: These findings are important since this is one the few cell lines described in the literature with a cytopathic effect. So it can be used for antigen preparation and serological testing for the diagnosis of specific rubella antibodies.

Multilevel power converters have been introduced as the solution for high-power high-voltage switching applications where they have well-known advantages. Recently, full back-to-back connected multilevel neutral point diode clamped converters (NPC converter) have been used inhigh-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Bipolar-connected back-to-back NPC converters have advantages in long-distance HVDCtransmission systems over the full back-to-back connection, but greater difficulty to balance the dc capacitor voltage divider on both sending and receiving end NPC converters. This study shows that power flow control and dc capacitor voltage balancing are feasible using fast optimum-predictive-based controllers in HVDC systems using bipolar back-to-back-connected five-level NPC multilevel converters. For both converter sides, the control strategytakes in account active and reactive power, which establishes ac grid currents in both ends, and guarantees the balancing of dc bus capacitor voltages inboth NPC converters. Additionally, the semiconductor switching frequency is minimised to reduce switching losses. The performance and robustness of the new fast predictive control strategy, and its capability to solve the DC capacitor voltage balancing problem of bipolar-connected back-to-back NPCconverters are evaluated.

Voltage source multilevel power converter structures are being considered for high power high voltage applications where they have well known advantages. Recently, full back-to-back connected multilevel neutral diode clamped converters (NPC) have been used in high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Bipolar back-to-back connection of NPCs have advantages in long distance HVDC transmission systems, but highly increased difficulties to balance the dc capacitor voltage dividers on both sending and receiving end NPCs. This paper proposes a fast optimum-predictive controller to balance the dc capacitor voltages and to control the power flow in a long distance HVDCsystem using bipolar back-to-back connected NPCs. For both converter sides, the control strategy considers active and reactive power to establish ac grid currents on sending and receiving ends, while guaranteeing the balancing of both NPC dc bus capacitor voltages. Furthermore, the fast predictivecontroller minimizes the semiconductor switching frequency to reduce global switching losses. With the restructuring of the energy sector in industrialized countries there is an increased complexity in market players’ interactions along with emerging problems and new issues to be addressed. Decision support tools that facilitate the study and understanding of these markets are extremely useful to provide players with competitive advantage. In this context arises MASCEM, a multi-agent simulator for competitive electricity markets. It is essential to reinforce MASCEM with the ability to recreate electricity markets reality in the fullest possible extent, making it able to simulate as many types of markets models and players as possible. This paper presents the development of the Balancing Market in MASCEM. A key module to the study of competitive electricity markets, as it has well defined and distinct characteristics previously implemented.

In this paper we present a new methodology, based in game theory, to obtain the market balancing between Distribution Generation Companies (DGENCO), in liberalized electricity markets. The new contribution of this methodology is the verification of the participation rate of each agent based in Nucléolo Balancing and in Shapley Value. To validate the results we use the Zaragoza Distribution Network with 42 Bus and 5 DGENCO.

Nos últimos anos o ISCAP, à semelhança de outras escolas do Ensino Superior, teve um aumento de população na ordem dos 100%. As suas estruturas administrativas, apesar de terem sido reforçadas, não tiveram um aumento na mesma proporção. Perante a incapacidade de resolução do problema a instituição adoptou a solução de informatizar os processos. Numa primeira fase, em 1997, foi implementado um sistema informático para apoio aos serviços administrativos. Apesar deste avanço havia ainda um outro passo a dar: o de melhorar a qualidade do serviço prestado aos estudantes. Em épocas de inscrição em exame ou de renovação de matrícula era necessário esperar horas numa fila para se ser atendido. Por isso, era urgente encontrar soluções que, pelo menos, reduzissem os tempos de espera. Em 1999 deu-se início ao desenvolvimento de um ambicioso projecto que pretendia “levar” a secretaria até aos estudantes e docentes através da Internet. Em Fevereiro de 2000 o serviço arranca com a denominação de “Secretaria On-Line”. Este serviço, no final da sua terceira fase, atingiu todos os objectivos delineados em 1999. A ligação do sistema com a rede de Multibanco, para pagamentos, permitiu eliminar as últimas arestas. Com o objectivo de facilitar o acesso à informação, parte deste serviço (informação de notas e propinas) também passou a estar também disponível através do canal telefone suportado por uma plataforma de atendimento automático. O serviço de mensagens SMS é outro canal de comunicação da escola com a sua comunidade. Posteriormente, a plataforma foi adoptada por outras escolas do IPP estando actualmente a dar suporte à generalidade dos processos académicos e lectivos. No caso da componente financeira da gestão de propinas, é utilizada por todas as escolas do IPP. O presente trabalho foca-se no projecto Secretaria On-Line fazendo uma descrição ao nível funcional, arquitectónico e tecnológico.

O intuito principal desta Tese é criar um interface de Dados entre uma fonte de informação e fornecimento de Rotas para turistas e disponibilizar essa informação através de um sistema móvel interactivo de navegação e visualização desses mesmos dados. O formato tecnológico será portátil e orientado à mobilidade (PDA) e deverá ser prático, intuitivo e multi-facetado, permitindo boa usabilidade a públicos de várias faixas etárias. Haverá uma componente de IA (Inteligência Artificial), que irá usar a informação fornecida para tomar decisões ponderadas tendo em conta uma diversidade de aspectos. O Sistema a desenvolver deverá ser, assim, capaz de lidar com imponderáveis (alterações de rota, gestão de horários, cancelamento de pontos de visita, novos pontos de visita) e, finalmente, deverá ajudar o turista a gerir o seu tempo entre Pontos de Interesse (POI – Points os Interest). Deverá também permitir seguir ou não um dado percurso pré-definido, havendo possibilidade de cenários de exploração de POIs, sugeridos a partir de sugestões in loco, similares a Locais incluídos no trajecto, que se enquadravam no perfil dos Utilizadores. O âmbito geográfico de teste deste projecto será a zona ribeirinha do porto, por ser um ex-líbris da cidade e, simultaneamente, uma zona com muitos desafios ao nível geográfico (com a inclinação) e ao nível do grande número de Eventos e Locais a visitar.

Este trabalho teve o intuito de criar uma linha de montagem universal através da qual será dada formação aos atuais operadores e a novos que possam vir a pertencer ao departamento de montagem na empresa Grohe Portugal. Para tal era necessário saber realizar um estudo de métodos e um estudo de tempos sobre os vários processos existentes no departamento de montagem. Com esse intuito foi elaborada uma pesquisa sobre as referidas temáticas, onde ficou evidente a sua importância e a sua imprescindibilidade. Inicialmente houve também um acompanhamento das montagens dos produtos nas várias linhas, de forma a adquirir conhecimento sobre as características dos processos de montagem existentes no departamento. Os pontos mais importantes durante o estudo de métodos e tempos realizado foram a definição de toda a estrutura do processo, das ferramentas e materiais a utilizar, não esquecendo a relação entre o operador e as suas ferramentas e a medição de tempos de todas as tarefas necessárias para cada processo de montagem. A linha de montagem, cujo projeto se desenvolveu, é composta por três bancadas e consiste num conjunto de postos de trabalho onde são executadas as operações através de máquinas, do trabalho humano, ou da sua conjugação, dispostos numa determinada sequência, sendo alguns deles amovíveis. Para a realização e conclusão deste projeto foram superadas diversas etapas, sendo que as mais relevantes foram:  a análise dos processos de montagem;  estudo de tempos de todas as famílias de produtos a serem implementados na linha de formação; - Definição da estrutura da linha de montagem; - Definição das rampas e dos tubos de abastecimento da linha; - Desenho da linha de montagem em 3D no software SolidWorks. Paralelamente foram também desenvolvidos estudos de tempos sobre alguns produtos com o intuito de serem implementadas melhorias, ou apenas para o controlo de tempos necessários para a realização das operações Por último, foi também elaborada uma recolha de ferramentas existentes no departamento de montagem para serem elaborados manuais de instruções das ferramentas fabricadas internamente, com o objetivo de obter a certificação OSHAS 180001 e de criar documentos com a listagem de materiais necessários para cada produto.

Several Web-based on-line judges or on-line programming trainers have been developed in order to allow students to train their programming skills. However, their pedagogical functionalities in the learning of programming have not been clearly defined. EduJudge is a project which aims to integrate the “UVA On-line Judge”, an existing on-line programming trainer with an important number of problems and users, into an effective educational environment consisting of the e-learning platform Moodle and the competitive learning tool QUESTOURnament. The result is the EduJudge system which allows teachers to apply different pedagogical approaches using a proven e-learning platform, makes problems easy to search through an effective search engine, and provides an automated evaluation of the solutions submitted to these problems. The final objective is to provide new learning strategies to motivate students and present programming as an easy and attractive challenge. EduJudge has been tried and tested in three algorithms and programming courses in three different Engineering degrees. The students’ motivation and satisfaction levels were analysed alongside the effects of the EduJudge system on students’ academic outcomes. Results indicate that both students and teachers found that among other multiple benefits the EduJudge system facilitates the learning process. Furthermore, the experi- ment also showed an improvement in students’ academic outcomes. It must be noted that the students’ level of satisfaction did not depend on their computer skills or their gender.

Although power-line communication (PLC) is not a new technology, its use to support communication with timing requirements is still the focus of ongoing research. Recently, a new infrastructure was presented, intended for communication using power lines from a central location to geographically dispersed nodes using inexpensive devices. This new infrastructure uses a two-level hierarchical power-line system, together with an IP-based network. Within this infrastructure, in order to provide end-toend communication through the two levels of the powerline system, it is necessary to fully understand the behaviour of the underlying network layers. The masterslave behaviour of the PLC MAC, together with the inherent dynamic topology of power-line networks are important issues that must be fully characterised. Therefore, in this paper we present a simulation model which is being used to study and characterise the behaviour of power-line communication.

Virtual Reality (VR) has grown to become state-of-theart technology in many business- and consumer oriented E-Commerce applications. One of the major design challenges of VR environments is the placement of the rendering process. The rendering process converts the abstract description of a scene as contained in an object database to an image. This process is usually done at the client side like in VRML [1] a technology that requires the client’s computational power for smooth rendering. The vision of VR is also strongly connected to the issue of Quality of Service (QoS) as the perceived realism is subject to an interactive frame rate ranging from 10 to 30 frames-per-second (fps), real-time feedback mechanisms and realistic image quality. These requirements overwhelm traditional home computers or even high sophisticated graphical workstations over their limits. Our work therefore introduces an approach for a distributed rendering architecture that gracefully balances the workload between the client and a clusterbased server. We believe that a distributed rendering approach as described in this paper has three major benefits: It reduces the clients workload, it decreases the network traffic and it allows to re-use already rendered scenes.

This paper describes the communication stack of the REMPLI system: a structure using power-lines and IPbased networks for communication, for data acquisition and control of energy distribution and consumption. It is furthermore prepared to use alternative communication media like GSM or analog modem connections. The REMPLI system provides communication service for existing applications, namely automated meter reading, energy billing and domotic applications. The communication stack, consisting of physical, network, transport, and application layer is described as well as the communication services provided by the system. We show how the peculiarities of the power-line communication influence the design of the communication stack, by introducing requirements to efficiently use the limited bandwidth, optimize traffic and implement fair use of the communication medium for the extensive communication partners.

TOD (Transit Oriented Development) is typically defined as a high density mixed area (residential and commercial) within easy walking distance of a high capacity public transport station (typically within an 800m buffer area). TOO is viewed as a set of strategies to increase the use of public transport, increasing walking activity, containing urban sprawl, and creating more liveable places. It is believed that this type of combined strategies will improve sustainable growth. This work is an exploratory work for evidence of TOD characteristics in train station areas in Azambuja train line, setting further methodologies to evaluate the success of TOD areas.
