O diagnóstico da malária é realizado rotineiramente pelo exame da gota espessa, entretanto, esta técnica requer o treinamento de microscopistas e pode consumir muito tempo. Foi realizado um estudo de concordância de dois testes rápidos (Optimal-IT® e ICT P.f./P.v.®) com a gota espessa, na atenção básica de saúde, em Manaus.

A perceção tridimensional é uma área em crescente desenvolvimento. Não existindo uma tecnologia ideal capaz de percecionar todo o tipo de cenários, têm surgido estudos sobre a aplicabilidade de diferentes tecnologias de forma a obter modelos que melhor se aproximem da realidade. Propõe-se nesta dissertação o desenvolvimento de um sistema de baixo-custo de percepção tridimensional que seja portátil e acessível na sua aplicabilidade, de forma a ter a capacidade de percecionar tridimensionalmente espaços interiores com pouca iluminação, tais como as divisões de um edifício ou os canais de uma mina subterrânea. Utilizou-se a triangulação entre uma câmara digital, os pontos de uma linha laser e um emissor laser para a obtenção dos dados tridimensionais do cenário. Para isso, recorreu-se a metodologias de processamento digital de imagens para a construção dos modelos dos cenários. Para se obter a validação desta dissertação, realizaram-se testes do protótipo de forma a determinar as suas capacidades percecionais. Em primeiro lugar realizou-se uma bateria de testes de calibração onde, repetidamente, se estudaram isoladamente pontos do cenário para verificar a precisão do sensor. Após esta calibração, estudou-se a capacidade de transformação de uma linha laser projetada num conjunto de coordenadas. Finalmente testou-se a capacidade de perceção tridimensional por rotação do sensor, de forma a realizar a transformação de múltiplas projeções de linhas laser num conjunto de coordenadas em torno do sensor. Verificou-se: no teste de calibração, a obtenção de distâncias com erro médio relativo inferior a 1%; no teste da linha laser, a capacidade de perceção de profundidade de múltiplos pontos ao longo da mesma; no teste de rotação, a aquisição de múltiplos conjuntos de linhas de profundidade no cenário, por rotação do sensor. Os resultados dos testes de validação permitiram concluir a viabilidade de utilizar a triangulação na aquisição de conjuntos de coordenadas de espaços interiores.

This thesis focus on the measurement and accounting of contributions received by nonprofit organizations, as they are a significant component of revenues nowadays. A survey was developed and forward to 38 different NPOs, with the goal of understanding their motivations and what advantages and disadvantages they believe would result if they start to measure and account for all kinds of contributions. They presented many advantages from this practice; however, some are not doing it due to the difficulties in valuing contributions with no market value which would require a higher workload, waste of resources and time to be taken from other important activities.

The Health Behavior in School-aged Children is a cross-national study collecting data on social and health indicators on adolescents in 43 countries. The study provides comparable data on health behaviors and health outcomes through the use of a common protocol, which have been a back bone of the study sine its initiation in 1983. Recent years, researchers within the study have noticed a questionable comparability on the widely used item on self-rated health. One of the four response categories to the item "Would you say your health is….?" showed particular variation, as the response category "Fair" varied from 20 % in Latvia and Moldova to 3-4 % in Bulgaria and Macedonia. A qualitative mini-survey of the back-translations showed that the response category "Fair" had a negative slant in 25 countries, a positive slant in 10 countries and was considered neutral in 9 countries. This finding indicates that there are what may be called semantic issues affecting comparability in international studies, since the same original word (in an English original) is interpreted differently across countries and cultures. The paper test and discuss a few possible explanations to this, however, only leaving to future studies to hold a cautious approach to international comparisons if working with the self-rated health item with four response categories.

INTRODUCTION: Debates about the quality of medical education have become more evident in the recent past, and as a result several different assessment methods have been refined for that purpose. The use of questionnaires filled out by medical students to assess the quality of lectures is one of the most common methods employed in our milieu. However, the reliability of this investigation method has not yet been systematically tested. The authors present the reliability of a specific form applied to the fourth grade medical students during the clinical psychiatry course. METHOD: Eighty-one fourth grade medical students were instructed to complete a form immediately after each clinical psychiatry lecture. Thirty-four students (42%) failed to turn in the forms after the final lecture. These students were given an identical form to assess the lectures in a retrospective fashion. The grades given by both groups of students for each performed lecture and the number of students who have graded an unperformed lecture were compared. Statistical significance for both groups was determined by means of the chi-square test (p< 0.05). RESULTS: Eighteen out of the 34 students who filled out the forms retrospectively (53%) rated the unperformed lecture, whereas only 5 out of the 47 students who filled out the forms during the course (11%) did so. This is statistically significant (p< 0.05). There was no statistical difference for the grades given to the lectures that were actually performed. DISCUSSION: The authors concluded the low reliability rate of the retrospective evaluation warrant a continuous assessment method during the course.

Noting that maternal depression is common during a baby's first year, this study examined the interaction of depressed and non-depressed mother-child dyads. A sample of 26 first-time mothers with postpartum depression at the third month after birth and their 3-month-old infants was compared to a sample of 25 first-time mothers with no postpartum depression at the third month after birth and their 3-month-old infants. The observations were repeated at 6 months and again at 12 months postpartum. The samples were compared for differences in mother interaction behavior, mother's infant care, mother's concern with the baby, infant behavioral difficulties, infant mental and motor development, and infant behavior with the observer. Among the findings are the following: (1) depressed mothers' interaction behavior and care of their infants are less adequate than the non-depressed mothers' interaction behavior and care of their infants at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (2) infants' interaction behaviors during feeding and face-to-face interaction with depressed mothers are less adequate than infants' interactions with non-depressed mothers at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (3) mother-infant interactions are less adequate in the depressed mother dyads than the non-depressed dyads at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (4) depressed mothers are less concerned about their infants than non-depressed mothers at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (5) infants of depressed mothers have more behavioral difficulties at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum than infants of non-depressed mothers; (6) infants of depressed mothers had lower mental and motor development rates at 6 and 12 months postpartum than infants of non-depressed mothers; and (7) infants of non-depressed mothers behaved in a more positive way with the observer than the infants of depressed mothers. OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of stress on teaching medical emergencies in an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course and to verify this influence on learning, and the efficiency of emergency care training. METHODS: Seventeen physicians signed up for an ACLS course. Their pulses were taken and blood pressure (BP) verified on the first day, before the beginning of the course, and on the second day, during the theoretical and practical test (TPT). Variations in pulse rates and BP were compared with students' test grades. Then, students answered a questionnaire of variables (QV) about the amount of sleep they had during the course, the quantity of study material and the time spent studying for the course, and a stress scale graphic. RESULTS: Seven students had a pulse variation less than 10% between the 2 periods and 10 had a 10% or more variation. Grades on TPT were, respectively, 91.4±2.4 and 87.3±5.2 (p<0.05). Six students had a BP variation less than 20 mmHg, and in 11 it varied more than 21 mmHg. Grades on the TPT were 92.3±3.3 and 86.2± 8.1, respectively (p<0.05). The QV dates did not significantly influence grades. CONCLUSION: Stress, as an isolated variable, had a negative influence on the learning process and on the efficiency of emergency training in this situation.

La percepción, consumo y manejo de recursos naturales forma parte del conocimiento tradicional de distintas poblaciones humanas e involucra diversidad de actividades (recolección de plantas, caza y pesca, etc). Entre los vegetales, el uso de plantas medicinales se destaca por su persistencia y ubicuidad. El recurso animal, a través de la caza y la pesca, es fundamental como fuente de alimento y empleo. El sistema Mar Chiquita-Bañados del Río Dulce se destaca por su biodiversidad y la existencia de prácticas tradicionales de uso. La presión por conversión de ambientes naturales a tierras dedicadas al cultivo es fuerte, afectando principalmente a los bosques autóctonos, y las especies animales que en él habitan. Además, la desaparición de ambientes naturales conlleva la pérdida de prácticas tradicionales de uso, con la consiguiente deculturación. El presente trabajo evaluará la percepción y utilización de recursos naturales por los pobladores del área de influencia de Bañados del Río Dulce y Laguna Mar Chiquita, centrándose en plantas medicinales, peces, aves y mamíferos, a la vez de indagar sobre la diversidad de percepciones y conductas de apropiación de los recursos, dado que en la región coexisten diferentes pautas socio-culturales de acuerdo al grupo de procedencia. Como metodología básica para la recolección de datos de percepción y uso se utilizarán encuestas semi-estructuradas. Sobre el origen étnico y lazos sociales se relevarán de fuentes escritas sobre procedencia, pautas de elección de pareja y formas de residencia. Los muestreos de fauna a campo se realizarán al azar estratificados en pastizal, bosque, y áreas relacionadas a humedales en busca de huellas, heces y señales de la presencia de especies animales focales, a la vez de prospección visual y auditiva. Los datos obtenidos acerca del conocimiento y uso del ambiente se presentarán y analizarán mediante técnicas específicas para análisis de datos antropológicos cualitativos y madiante ANOVA. Los datos sobre origen y lazos serán analizados según indicadores de endogamia geográfica e indicadores de endogamia reproductiva. Los datos de presencia de las especies se utilizarán para desarrollar modelos de distribución regional y de nicho ecológico. Se espera caracterizar en forma diferencial la percepción y uso del ambiente de acuerdo al origen o área de residencia, a la vez de generar mapas de distribución de especies focales. Asimismo, se propondrán acciones de conservación de la biodiversidad, tales como cartillas o talleres tendientes a reforzar y re-significar los conocimientos locales sobre el uso de flora y fauna.

The idea for this thesis arose from a chain of reactions first set in motion by a particular experience. In keeping with the contemporary need to deconstruct every phenomenon it seemed important to analyse this experience in the hope of a satisfactory explanation. The experience referred to is the aesthetic experience provoked by works of art. The plan for the thesis involved trying to establish whether the aesthetic experience is unique and individual, or whether it is one that is experienced universally. Each question that arises in the course of this exploration promotes a dialectical reaction. I rely on the history of aesthetics as a philosophical discipline to supply the answers. This study concentrates on the efforts by philosophers and critical theorists to understand the tensions between the empirical and the emotional, the individual and the universal responses to the sociological, political and material conditions that prevail and are expressed through the medium of art. What I found is that the history of aesthetics is full of contradictory evidence and cannot provide a dogmatic solution to the questions posed. In fact what is indicated is that the mystery that attaches to the aesthetic experience is one that can also apply to the spiritual or transcendent experience. The aim of this thesis is to support the contribution of visual art in the spiritual well being of human development and supports the uniqueness of the evaluation and aesthetic judgement by the individual of a work of art. I suggest that mystery will continue to be of value in the holistic development of human beings and this mystery can be expressed through visual art. Furthermore, this thesis might suggest that what could be looked at is whether a work of art may be redemptive in its affect and offset the current decline in affective religious practice.
